When I Consume You marks the third feature for New York-based filmmaker Perry Blackshear following his award-winning psychological horror feature debut They Look Like People and celebrated sophomore effort, the aquatic supernatural horror romance The Siren. All three of his films have been widely embraced and praised both on the festival circuit and upon release, with They Look Like People winning a Jury Honorable Mention at the 2015 Slamdance Film Festival upon its premiere. Blackshear again teams up with creative collaborators MacLeod Andrews, Evan Dumouchel, and Margaret Ying Drake for When I Consume You, who, alongside Libby Ewing, deliver a heartfelt family drama about grief and redemption. Ewing and Dumouchel play brother-sister duo Daphne and Wilson Shaw. Troubled since childhood, the two have struggled to find stability as they've grown older, and while Daphne seems to have finally gotten her life together, the darkness that's followed their family all along begins to close in more aggressively than ever before. A unique urban folktale set and filmed in Brooklyn, When I Consume You confronts the vulnerabilities that people struggle with every day through a genre lens to create a chillingly intimate indie horror nightmare. The film is written, directed, and lensed by Blackshear, who also produced alongside Andrews, Dumouchel, and Ewing. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/followingfilms/support

This week we sit down with filmmaker Perry Blackshear, the writer/director behind They Look Like People and The Siren. His latest film When I Consume You is currently out on VOD and continues his trend of making intimate horror movies about internal struggle. We discuss how he came to horror later in life, some of his favorites and films that pulled him into the genre as well as what he enjoys about the genre now that he watches it. Then we dig into When I Consume You, which is an emotionally devastating movie that blends supernatural horror with the story of a brother and sister trying to make it in a cruel world. Finally, we turn to Pinocchio, a film that is actually quite terrifying with its depictions of child trafficking and body horror. We dig into the almost propaganda-like nature of the story, the historical context of the film, the xenophobia and racist depictions as well as some of the incredibly haunting visuals and the absolutely *stunning* animation. Ariel and Candance from Not Your Final Girl are back to talk two movies that had us feeling all sorts of emotions. From a grounded film about two siblings dealing with a demon from their past to an infamous Category III Hong Kong movie that was equal parts disgusting and silly, we were all over the place. But did we like what we saw?Ariel and Candance from Not Your Final Girl are back to discuss the strangest genre films we could find. This week we have a pair of interesting movies. Our first review takes us to the streets of New York City where we talk about down to earth horror story with otherworldly elements. We then travel across the globe to Hong Kong to talk about exploitation flick that wants to push your buttons. When I Consume You is the third feature film from Perry Blackshear. We start with a discussion of how much he has improved since he debuted with They Look Like People. The movie is about a sister and brother who lean on each other for support. Just when it looks like Daphne Shaw is getting her life together, a demon from her past comes back to her haunt her.The story is about the bonds between a brother and sister and has some redemptive qualities, but is it too on the nose? Is Blackshear trying so hard to get his message across that he ruins a good story. We also discuss the performances of the two leads and talk about the recent trend of wild tonal shifts in movies.Dr. Lamb is notorious even as Category III movies. (We briefly discuss what a Category III movie is and compare them  to similar films in other parts of the world.) It is about a serial killer and what the police discovered after he was caught. It sounds simple enough, but the acts he committed are unbelievably awful. Even worse, Dr. Lamb is based on a true story. The film is a straight up exploitation film that seems to take joy in disgusting its audiences. Torture, necrophilia, and assault all manage to find their way into the movie. We wonder how the story can get so downright nasty while the production looked beautiful at times. We also question how well Dr. Lamb would do in today's world and if there was an attempt at a deeper story.Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Netflix has joined the fray. Already, they are producing and buying quality television series. Now the company is picking up films as exclusives from the festival circuit to show on their channel. One of those is the recently released psychological horror film, They Look Like People. Written and directed by newcomer Perry Blackshear, the film stars mainly a three person cast of MacLeod Andrews, Evan Dumouchel, and Margaret Ying Drake. Wyatt (played by Andrews) drifts into the big city meeting up with his childhood and longtime friend, Christian (played by Dumouchel). Christian immediately invites Wyatt to stay with him as long as possible, essentially becoming roommates. Unknown to Christian, Wyatt has been contacted by some alien or spiritual force warning him of an upcoming apocalypse. He's told something may be bodysnatching people where these imposters are may just be the first step to the ultimate invasion. In many respects They Look Like People has various traits to such "buddy" horror films as Resolution with a taste of more recent movies like 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Witch, where the audience is always on their toes wondering if Wyatt may be nothing more than an "unreliable narrator". Dark Discussions, informed by listener Chris Genro of the wonderful buzz around the film, decide to review and critique this independently released feature.
