Another year ending means another Wrap Up episode where we go over our top picks for the year, as well as discussing some other titles we've seen in 2023. While most of the films we do cover here as our favorite viewings for this year are from the last few years, they are not all from 2023. But as we've pointed out many times before, if you're watching it for the first time, no matter when it was released, as far as we're concerned, it still counts as a new movie to you! 2023 has been a great year for the horror genre, especially when you look outside the U.S., which we all hope everyone out there does, because there are some incredible titles coming from Spain, Malaysia, Argentina, Japan, and more. So hopefully our listeners are not restrainted by films that are "only in English", because those folks are sadly missing out on some incredible cinema.  For this episode, we strongly suggest you have a notepad and pen close by to jot down some titles because we think we're going to give you more than a few that we feel you should be checking out. And a special HUGE thanks to those that continue to tune in and listen to us ramble on about the genre we love. With this being our 60th episode, it seems our following is growing day by day, so thank you for your continued support and in 2024, we'll continue to help you Discover the Horror! Films mentioned in this episode: Accion Mutante (1993), The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster (2023), Anthropophagus (1981), Bewitched (1981), Birth/Rebirth (2023), The Black Demon (2023), The Blackening (2023), Blair Witch Project (1999), Blood Flower (2022), The Boogeyman: The Origin of the Myth aka El hombre del saco (2023), The Boys from County Hell (2020), Cobweb (2023), Cocaine Bear (2023), The Conference (2023), The Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954), The Curse of the Crying Woman (1963), The Dark and the Wicked (2020), Don't Listen (2020), Dracula (1931), Exists (2014), The Exorcist (1973), The Exorcist: Believer (2023), Evil Dead Rise (2023), Fragile (2005), Frankenstein (1931), Godzilla Minus One (2023), Grabbers (2012), The Grandmother (2021), Halloween (1978), Hallucinations (1986), Harpoon (2019), The Haunted Palace (1963), Hellhole (2022), Huesera: The Bone Woman (2022), The Innocents (2021), Infinity Pool (2023), The Invisible Man (1933), I See You (2019), Juan of the Dead (2011), Knock at the Cabin (2023), The Lake (2023), The Last Horror Film (1982), The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023), Lifeboat (1944), Mad Heidi (2022), Meg 2 (2023), Megan (2023), Mr. Frost (1990), The Mummy (1932), The Nameless (1999), The Offering (2023), One Cut of the Dead (2017), The Outwaters (2022), The Rape of the Vampire (1968), Red Spirit Lake (1993), Renfield (2023), The Sadness (2021), Satanic Hispanics (2022), Satan's Slave (2022), Scream VI (2023), Severance (2006), Sister Death (2023), Shaky Shivers (2022), Shaun of the Dead (2004), Skinamarink (2022), Sleep Tight (2011), Talk to Me (2023), Terrified (2017), Thanksgiving (2023), They Look Like People (2015), Troll Hunter (2010), El Vampiro (1957), Venus (2022), The Vigil (2019), The Village (2004), When Evil Lurks (2023), Witching and Bitching (2013), The Wolf Man (1941), Willow Creek (2013), The Witch's Mirror (1962)

When I Consume You marks the third feature for New York-based filmmaker Perry Blackshear following his award-winning psychological horror feature debut They Look Like People and celebrated sophomore effort, the aquatic supernatural horror romance The Siren. All three of his films have been widely embraced and praised both on the festival circuit and upon release, with They Look Like People winning a Jury Honorable Mention at the 2015 Slamdance Film Festival upon its premiere. Blackshear again teams up with creative collaborators MacLeod Andrews, Evan Dumouchel, and Margaret Ying Drake for When I Consume You, who, alongside Libby Ewing, deliver a heartfelt family drama about grief and redemption. Ewing and Dumouchel play brother-sister duo Daphne and Wilson Shaw. Troubled since childhood, the two have struggled to find stability as they've grown older, and while Daphne seems to have finally gotten her life together, the darkness that's followed their family all along begins to close in more aggressively than ever before. A unique urban folktale set and filmed in Brooklyn, When I Consume You confronts the vulnerabilities that people struggle with every day through a genre lens to create a chillingly intimate indie horror nightmare. The film is written, directed, and lensed by Blackshear, who also produced alongside Andrews, Dumouchel, and Ewing. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/followingfilms/support

This week we sit down with filmmaker Perry Blackshear, the writer/director behind They Look Like People and The Siren. His latest film When I Consume You is currently out on VOD and continues his trend of making intimate horror movies about internal struggle. We discuss how he came to horror later in life, some of his favorites and films that pulled him into the genre as well as what he enjoys about the genre now that he watches it. Then we dig into When I Consume You, which is an emotionally devastating movie that blends supernatural horror with the story of a brother and sister trying to make it in a cruel world. Finally, we turn to Pinocchio, a film that is actually quite terrifying with its depictions of child trafficking and body horror. We dig into the almost propaganda-like nature of the story, the historical context of the film, the xenophobia and racist depictions as well as some of the incredibly haunting visuals and the absolutely *stunning* animation. You can follow Perry's new film When I Consume You on Twitter. You can also learn more about the film from its website. Ariel and Candance from Not Your Final Girl are back to talk two movies that had us feeling all sorts of emotions. From a grounded film about two siblings dealing with a demon from their past to an infamous Category III Hong Kong movie that was equal parts disgusting and silly, we were all over the place. But did we like what we saw?Ariel and Candance from Not Your Final Girl are back to discuss the strangest genre films we could find. This week we have a pair of interesting movies. Our first review takes us to the streets of New York City where we talk about down to earth horror story with otherworldly elements. We then travel across the globe to Hong Kong to talk about exploitation flick that wants to push your buttons. When I Consume You is the third feature film from Perry Blackshear. We start with a discussion of how much he has improved since he debuted with They Look Like People. The movie is about a sister and brother who lean on each other for support. Just when it looks like Daphne Shaw is getting her life together, a demon from her past comes back to her haunt her.The story is about the bonds between a brother and sister and has some redemptive qualities, but is it too on the nose? Is Blackshear trying so hard to get his message across that he ruins a good story. We also discuss the performances of the two leads and talk about the recent trend of wild tonal shifts in movies.Dr. Lamb is notorious even as Category III movies. (We briefly discuss what a Category III movie is and compare them  to similar films in other parts of the world.) It is about a serial killer and what the police discovered after he was caught. It sounds simple enough, but the acts he committed are unbelievably awful. Even worse, Dr. Lamb is based on a true story. The film is a straight up exploitation film that seems to take joy in disgusting its audiences. Torture, necrophilia, and assault all manage to find their way into the movie. We wonder how the story can get so downright nasty while the production looked beautiful at times. We also question how well Dr. Lamb would do in today's world and if there was an attempt at a deeper story.Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. We have talked about Mike Flanagan’s films (Haunting of Hill House, Doctor Sleep, Gerald's Game, Oculus) a lot over the years, so when he puts out a list of movies he’s been watching during the lockdown, we take notice.. and we totally steal it and do a whole episode about it. We go down the list and discuss our own opinions about these films, and guess what? Flanagan is right, these are some seriously good movies. Not all of them are mainstream or well-known and in fact many of them are low-budget, under-the-radar independent movies - the kind you should be spending your money on. Right? Mark has a conversation with Kerrie Flanagan and Chuck Harrelson who are collaborating yet again under the author name C.G. Harris, and their mutual collaboration with audiobook narrator MacLeod Andrews. They discuss the book The Nine, which is the first book in The Judas Files series, which is narrated by MacLeod, a multi-award-winning narrator. Prior to the conversation, Mark shares a few personal updates, which include: Heading to Colorado to attend Superstars Writing Seminars as a guest instructor the first week of February A forthcoming two hour keynote he has been booked into for the spring A virtual talk he'll be doing at one conference in Alberta while he is attending another conference in Colorado Mark then shares a word from this episode's sponsor, Findaway Voices... You can learn more about how you can get your work distributed to retailers and library systems around the world at starkreflections.ca/Findaway. In the interview, Mark, Kerrie, Chuck and MacLeod talk about: The origin of Kerrie and Chuck starting to write together, originally for a romantic comedy series of three books under the name C.K. Wiles Where the name C.G. Harris came from (as well as Mark's continued mispronunciation of C.G. Harris as "C.J. Harris" and his feeble excuse that that's the way Canadians pronounce it) MacLeod's background as an actor and how he got involved in recording audiobooks, which he had never thought of as a possible career path The 12 books that MacLeod had done with Brilliance audio and how that turned into a full time profession, allowing him to leave cater waitering The decision to do this collaboration with Findaway Voices, and how this project was the first one MacLeod had done in a more independent fashion The full service studio in Los Angeles that MacLeod used to record THE NINE How this series was something that Kerrie and Chuck wanted to be similar to or appeal to fans of Jim Butcher's "The Dresden Files" The decision to reach out to MacLeod to see if he would be interested in narrating THE NINE How the collaboration between writers and narrator began and progressed, and the way that Kerrie and Chuck enjoyed the playful experimentation that MacLeod did on this project and also fully trusted him How the Voices Share royalty splitting option worked for them via Findaway Voices What THE NINE is all about and the plans for the 12 books in The Judas Files series The way that comedy plays a role in a dark novel such as this one The desire to do a simultaneous release of the print, eBook and audiobook for Book 2 in the series in August 2020 The plans for the next two books in the series coming relatively quickly after that (November and December) After the conversation, Mark talks about how Chuck was a fan of MacLeod's previous audiobooks and had the idea to ask if he would be interested in working with them. He reflects on the importance of asking. Links of Interest: C.G. For nearly a decade, Harris has escaped the humdrum of the real world by creating fictional characters and made-up realities. When not writing, Harris enjoys sipping scotch while watching the twisted humor of Drunk History. Seeing our past through the bottom of a whisky glass is more entertaining than reading a dusty textbook. C.G. MacLeod Andrews is a multiple Audie, Earphone, and SOVAS award winning audiobook narrator, as well as an award winning film actor and producer. Greetings, and welcome back to Horror Business. We have one awesome episode in store for you guys. On this episode we’re discussing Jacob’s Ladder and They Look Like People, and we were lucky enough to be joined by Jon The LitCritGuy! First and foremost we want to give a shoutout to our sponsors over at Lehigh Valley Apparel Creations, the premiere screen-printing company of the Lehigh Valley. Chris Reject and his merry band of miscreants are ready to work with you to bring to life your vision of a t-shirt for your business, band, project, or whatever else it is you need represented by a shirt, sweater, pin, or coozy. Head on over to www.xlvacx.com to check them out. Thanks! We begin by talking about what horror related things we had done lately. Jon opens the conversation by talking about recently teaching Alien and Ex Machina to his classes and hosting screenings of those films. We briefly discuss the intellectualization of the horror genre and the nature of horror fandom in America. Liam talks about seeing Brawl On Cellblock 99, and Justin talks about seeing Phoenix Forgotten, The Open House and Before I Wake. There is a brief discussion on the Truth Or Dare trailer and Godzilla: Planet Of Monsters, and Liam mentions the trailer for the upcoming ‘Bigfoot behaving badly’ movie Primal Rage. Up first we talk about 1990’s Jacob’s Ladder. We begin by talking about our initial exposure to this film. Jon talks about specific scenes in the film that had an effect on him, especially the ‘gurney’ scene in the hospital. Justin talks about the impact it had on the aesthetics of horror films in the 1990s, especially the ‘headshake’ effect the film pioneered and that many films and music videos went on to use. Liam talks about seeing the film on late night basic cable as a kid. Jon talks about the impact the film had on the video game franchise Silent Hill, as well as the overall bleakness of the film. Tim Robbins’ performance is discussed, as are the numerous twists and turns the film takes. Some of the deleted scenes and the strength of having them removed are discussed, and the nature of the cinematography (quick flashes of something horrific as opposed to long looks at something horrific) is discussed. The existential nature of the film, in that it examines the horror and anxiety of every day life, is examined. Liam briefly talks about the weirdly optimistic ending. Jon compares the gurney scene in which Danny Aiello’s character rages against the hospital staff as another example of we, in every day life, cling to our every day life despite it being horrific. Some of the theological aspects of the film are examined, including those of Meister Eckhart who is quoted in the film. There is a discussion on whether or not Louie and Jezzie are separate entities from Jacob Singer i.e. the film is entirely psychological and NOT mystical in nature, with Justin arguing the former and Liam arguing the latter. The plotline of drugs being used on unknowing soldiers in Vietnam being somewhat unnecessary and weird is discussed. We talk about the legacy this movie has, in that it had a tremendous impact on a certain age group while remaining somewhat obscure to the younger generation.   A comparison to Wes Craven’s The Serpent And The Rainbow is made, in that both films are non-traditional and non-linear approaches to the genre. Jon talks about the nature of horror film ascribed to each decade and how this film kind of bucks that trend. We discuss the possibility of the finished product being somewhat different from the screenplay and that it was a result of “director vs. screenwriter”. Up next we talk about 2015’s They Look Like People. Jon opens up the discussion by approaching the film’s take on alienation from a Marxist perspective, as well as commenting on the intimate look of the film in that it is a very tightly shot film. Liam talks about the “smallness” of the film, in that it has a small budget and a small cast and turns that “smallne...

Then it's on to the main event, where Kris tells of his recent Netflix adventures with BIG MOUTH (5:45), the new animated show featuring Nick Kroll, John Mulaney, Jessi Klein, and a host of guest stars. It cuts deep with the preadolescent awkwardness, but it's worth your time. Next up is THEY LOOK LIKE PEOPLE (11:35), an atmospheric, psychological horror film about two friends: one who is having a slow psychotic break where he can't trust anything he sees or hears, and the other whose entire existence is a facade erected to protect his insecurity. It's great, and Kris convinces Dave and Evan to see it right away. Last up is ONLY THE BRAVE (32:37) a true-ish story about the Granite Mountain Hotshots, whose heroism deserves a much more thoughtful, intelligent, and coherent movie than the one they got.

Tracy muses about why she became a horror fan after her first movie experience with Invasion of the Body Snatchers (‘78) as a young kid in the 80’s and then reminds Minki of all the scenes he forgot about from this week’s movie — a psychological thriller/buddy film about one guy’s journey through paranoia over an impending demonic invasion and his best friend’s quest for happiness. Loyalty and reality is questioned in the movie and whether this is a good movie or not is questioned in this episode. Special intro VO by Jeff Mathews.

Hey guys, Dennis Rooney here. Thank you for checking out Netflix Book Club, where every once in a red mariner's moon I get to watch a movie OF MY OWN CHOOSING. AND IT'S THIS WEEK BABY. EPISODE 67 AS CHOSEN BY ME IS they look like people (They Look Like People). Stand up comics and good friends Dan Barry and John Ziegler weigh in on this strange first effort from writer/director Perry Blackshear. How to describe this film? "The Thriller bordering on Horror equivalent to Primer" is a thought I just had that I feel is very accurate towards describing this film. It's low budget, you've never seen any of these actors in anything else. And it's good (OK that's up for discussion, listen to the podcast). It's the cool little movie you've never heard of and never would have seen if not for this service/app that you pay, what, nine bucks a month for? Give this film a shot at least. They don't make a lot of movies like this. And please support this podcast! Share, like the Facebook page, subscribe on the ol' iTunes.

Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Netflix has joined the fray. Already, they are producing and buying quality television series. Now the company is picking up films as exclusives from the festival circuit to show on their channel. One of those is the recently released psychological horror film, They Look Like People. Written and directed by newcomer Perry Blackshear, the film stars mainly a three person cast of MacLeod Andrews, Evan Dumouchel, and Margaret Ying Drake. Wyatt (played by Andrews) drifts into the big city meeting up with his childhood and longtime friend, Christian (played by Dumouchel). Christian immediately invites Wyatt to stay with him as long as possible, essentially becoming roommates. Unknown to Christian, Wyatt has been contacted by some alien or spiritual force warning him of an upcoming apocalypse. He's told something may be bodysnatching people where these imposters are may just be the first step to the ultimate invasion. In many respects They Look Like People has various traits to such "buddy" horror films as Resolution with a taste of more recent movies like 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Witch, where the audience is always on their toes wondering if Wyatt may be nothing more than an "unreliable narrator". Dark Discussions, informed by listener Chris Genro of the wonderful buzz around the film, decide to review and critique this independently released feature. And as we cautiously anthropomorphize some inanimate objects, we also discuss... John Carpenter, Perry Blackshear, like an Ikea catalog times a thousand, peculiar melancholy, cannibal movies, we've gotta have a script at that point, The Serpent and the Rainbow, can we just look at those chairs a little while longer, Danny Trejo, Hollows Grove, mom's story checked out, Alex Karpovsky, how can I make this scene better... how can I make this movie better, subjective reality, Kathryn Bigelow, sleazy ghost hunters, rocks with little bits of personality, by accident it became one of the most personal films he's made to date, random teeth that had been on the ground for like six hundred years, Bill and Ted's Terrible Adventure, Halloween, there's never a bad place for throwing knives, playing cool sax, Goodnight Mommy, Margaret Ying, what if demons are real?, I missed that beat, Doug Henning, Tim Cappello, vegan Peeps, The Exorcist, the genius DNA is passed through the babysitter, you're not fully appreciating your t-shirt, The Hole Story, oops, I accidentally came upon... a gigantic mass grave, auteur vision, creepy magicians, those old carbon copy machines, Evan Dumouchel, you are seven jobs, gore porn, Rubberneck, for years I would just sit in my bed being like... what if something takes over my body, held together by surface tension, hey it's The Fonz, Red Flag, psycho bromance, Near Dark, going over the microfiche, little candy families and I think it'll just turn into a gourd. "A heart-felt indie drama wrapped in a psychological thriller shell... with horrific elements."
