This month, we're joined by Joseph Hernandez, actor and festival programmer at Brooklyn Horror Film Festival and South By Southwest, to discuss the blurry lines between familial obligation and unhealthy codependent relationships. Do you like vampires? We do. But this isn't your old school Hollywood Dracula, as Thomas' nosferatitus is treated as a serious illness and strain on his siblings who now must murder on his behalf, in Jonathan Cuartas' MY HEART CAN'T BEAT UNLESS YOU TELL IT TO (2020). Meanwhile, some hundred years prior and in the middle of the Spanish flu epidemic of World War I, Pearl finds herself trapped on her family farm and longing to be a star. But it's not about what she wants: it's about making the best of what she has. Mia Goth leads the Ti West-directed PEARL (2022). Are these relationships abuse? Is there hope for our protagonists to break free? When is it okay to let a family member go? What's with Joe's Jigsaw impression? We meet Lucie on Halloween morning, at a bus stop by a pier that is festooned with flyers with the names and faces of missing children. She's soon picked us by Catherine Wilson, a wisecracking nurse who makes house calls to elderly residents. Lucie, who is interning for Ms. Wilson, is none too happy about the work, and at the end of her first day, relates her experiences to her friends Will and Ben over beers at the local pub. Will is a fisherman who works for his father, and Ben works for his mother at the pub. Like Lucie, the boys aren't thrilled with the quality of their lives – and so they hatch a plan to break into the home of one of Ms Wilson's patients, the comatose Ms. Jessel, whose house allegedly contains treasure which will, the kids hope, set them on the paths to prosperity. There's just one catch: Ms. Jessel's home is not what it seems. Nor is Ms. Wilson. And when the residents of the home extend a hearty welcome to the thieving trio, the result is a Halloween night of chaos and spiritual mayhem that changes their lives forever. Justin timms @justin_timms is the Creative Director of Brooklyn Horror Film Festival and Co-Founder of Yellow Veil Pictures. BK Horror kicked off last night beginning its annual survey of the genre at Nitehawk. This is NYC's preeminent genre fest, akin to Fantastic, Fantasia, Beyond, Sitges. Justin saw this gap ten years ago and filled it beautifully. The festival has packed screenings and after parties every night. They cover all the ground, prems and favs from festivals like Sundance, features and shorts. Restorations of important horror classics and classes with Miskatonic. This year they're commencing a new award with the first honoree Bill Lustig. Maniac is probably tied with Wolfen to me as favorite NYC horror movie, but also one of my favorite movies period. Joe Spinell in the greatest horror performance ever, period. Yellow Veil's slate is exploding this year, ramping up more releases than ever before, all killer no filler. As we get deeper into spooky season, we check in with Matt Barone, the Director of Programming for the Brooklyn Horror Festival, who will walk us through this year's slate of scary films.
We start the show with talk of the Naked Gun movies and Police Squad. Leslie Nielsen made the role of Frank Drebin his own. Liam Neeson is a great actor, but can he step into the shoes of the iconic character? And what does any of this have to do with The Simpsons?Blake and Regina had a great idea few weeks ago to talk about upcoming genre movies. It is was a great idea and, frankly, is something we should have been doing for a long time. So, this week we are debuting a new segment on the show. This week we talk about Genre of the Future! For our first installment, we talk the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival, whether Halloween will truly end, and the greatest horror movie moments. For the first time ever, we have a repeat review on our show. The last time we did Deadstream, Blake was not able to join us. Since the show recently debuted on Shudder, we figured this would be a great time to rectify that. We talk about having love for your craft, the importance of simplicity and horror, and uncharismatic influencers. It is not often that a movie leaves us speechless. We may be baffled, confused, or frustrated, but we always have something to say. And then we watched Project Wolf Hunting. The South Korean movie is about a group of dangerous criminals being transported on a giant cargo ship. Naturally, they escape. It sounds like Korean Con Air on a boat, and it is for a while. It soon becomes something so different that we had no idea what to think about. What we were both sure of is that it is easily one of the goriest movies in recent memory. We talk about when enough is too much, try to figure out what the film is going for, and try to decide if the body count is closer to 50 or 60 people dead.Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. This week I spoke to film publicist Kaila Hier. Kaila is a Montreal-born, formerly Berlin-based publicist and the founder of Exile PR. She has been working with film festivals for over a decade including Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival, FrightFest London, Fantastic Fest in Austin, and The Brooklyn Horror Film Festival, among others. Films that she’s represented such as CAM, SEA FEAVER, RANDOM ACTS OF VIOLENCE and THE BEACH HOUSE have screened at festivals around the globe. We talk about how she got into publicity, the experience of striking out on her own, what’s it’s like to work for herself and how she goes about creating that all important buzz. This was a really fun chat and Kaila was incredibly transparent about her career this far, so I hope you enjoy listening. PS. The Q&A that Kaila mentions at the end for Sabrina Mertens' film TIME OF MOULTING can be watched here.
This week we are joined by the "Wardrobe Mistress" Taffeta V to talk about the 1980 thriller /proto-slasher Fade to Black. Mike had an absolute blast talking to the Mistress about her longtime love for this cult classic, why Eric Binford is so misunderstood, and how the fashion and old school Hollywood charm helped this movie develop such a rabid following. Mike also had the opportunity to talk with Nicole McControversy and Kevin Monahan about the upcoming Nightstream online film fest. This is the Avengers of genre film fests, with the folks behind the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival, Boston Underground Film Fest, Overlook Film Fest, North Bend Film Fest & Popcorn Frights joining forces for a spectacular virtual event from October 8-11 (buy your passes or check out the schedule of films and events here)
On this episode host Jason Godbey and NRFTW Contributor EJ Argenio recap review the films from the Brooklyn Horror Film Fest and more. Show theme by Christopher Gillard Created by Jason Gdobey
Greetings, and welcome back to Horror Business. We have one awesome episode in store for you guys: today, we’re talking about 1982’s Halloween III and 2007’s Trick R’ Treat. First and foremost, we want to give a shoutout to our sponsors over at Lehigh Valley Apparel Creations, the premiere screen-printing company of the Lehigh Valley. Chris Reject and his merry band of miscreants are ready to work with you to bring to life your vision of a t-shirt for your business, band, project, or whatever else it is you need represented by a shirt, sweater, pin, or koozie. Head on over to www.xlvacx.com to check them out. Also, thank you to our Patreon subscribers. Your support means the world to us and we are eternally grateful for that support. Thanks! We start by briefly discussing what we’ve done lately involving horror. Liam and Justin talk about the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival and the films they saw, including Nightmare Fuel, Blood Quantum, The Shed, The Swerve, and 1BR. Liam talks about the recent Exhumed Films annual Horror-thon and some of the films he saw there, as well as seeing Parasite. Justin talks about attending the recent Exhumed Films Masters Of Horror event, seeing The Lost Boys at Frank Banko Ale House Cinemas and An American Werewolf In London at the Colonial Theatre in Phoenixville, as well as the films The Dead Don’t Die, Dry Blood, Wrinkles The Clown, 3 From Hell, Red Letter Day, The Girl On The Third Floor, Doctor Sleep, and Little Monsters, and the return of the TV series Castle Rock. We begin by talking about Halloween III. We give a history of the film and how John Carpenter initially meant for the series to be an anthology style series of films rather than a sequence of sequels, and briefly discuss our opinions on the franchise as a whole. We talk about some of the performances and what makes the franchise so good, and Justin discusses what hits so hard about the film. We dissect the film as an analogy for criticizing hoarding of wealth and consumerism, as well as some aspects of the film that could be perceived as anti-colonial. We talk about some of the performances in the film and our personal histories with the movie. Next up is Trick R’ Treat. We discuss how the film breaks outside of the box that many anthology films live and die by and how it is a relatively recent film to be considered a classic but is nonetheless beloved. We talk about the impact the film has had on Halloween culture, in that the idea of “the rules of Halloween” sprang from it. We briefly talk about the fact that this film has a strong sense of justice in that the bad guys often get what is coming to them and that many of the people who die deserve it. We examine the fact that despite the film’s relatively lighthearted tone, there are a few genuinely creepy moments. And finally we talk about the character Sam, who has become something of an iconic character over the years and was a wise branding move on behalf of the filmmakers. First and foremost, thank you to everyone and anyone who donated on Patreon, checked this episode out, or shared a tweet/shared a post on FB/gave us love by recommending us to someone. We love you forever for listening. Greetings, and welcome back to Horror Business. We have one awesome episode in store for you guys. On this episode we’re discussing Canadian horror films with Society & Return Of The Living Dead 3 with fellow horror hound and long time Cinepunk Jen Rodgers!. First and foremost we want to give a shoutout to our sponsors over at Lehigh Valley Apparel Creations, the premiere screen-printing company of the Lehigh Valley. Chris Reject and his merry band of miscreants are ready to work with you to bring to life your vision of a t-shirt for your business, band, project, or whatever else it is you need represented by a shirt, sweater, pin, or coozy. Head on over to www.xlvacx.com to check them out. Also, thank you to our Patreon subscribers. Your support means the world to us and we are eternally grateful for that support. Thanks! We start by talking about what we’ve seen or done lately in the field of horror. Jenny begins by talking about some of the films she’s seen at Fantastic Fest, including the film School’s Out. We talk about David Gordon Green’s recent Halloween, Luca Guadagnino’s Suspiria, and Justin and Liam attending the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival and seeing Knife + Heart, Welcome To Memory, The House Of Sweat And Tears, Luz, and Starfish. (Justin’s review of Starfish can be read here, and more reviews from Cinepunx of films that played at the festival here, here, here and here) We briefly talk about the Netflix series The House On Haunted Hill, and the Chilean horror film Aterrados. Up first is 1989’s Society. We briefly discuss the arc of Brian Yuzna’s career, including his work with director Stuart Gordon. Next we discuss our initial exposure to the film, such as seeing the poster in video stores when we were young or various stills from the film on the Internet. We dissect Yuzna’s portrayal of the wealthy upper class as inherently sinister and freakish, even without the body horror elements of the film being included. We touch upon the special effects of the film and briefly talk about the work of effects artist Screaming Mad George and his influence on the body horror genre. Up next we talk about 1993’s Return Of The Living Dead 3. Justin tells a brief anecdote of why he was stupidly afraid of this movie as a kid. Next we talk about the mythos of the ‘suffering zombie’ that ROTLD introduced with the first film, and how that helps us invest in the characters of this film even if they are otherwise uninteresting. We delve into the films shortcoming in portraying Julie as a character with actual agency and how instead it portrays her as just a tool to reflect the suffering of the lead male character. The look and feel of the film in how it is very “90s” and “post-Hellraiser” is briefly touched upon, as is the film reaching beyond what it’s capable of as compared to the first two ROTLD films which knew their place. Finally, we talk about how the look of the zombies is very “Yuzna” in the sense that instead of regular human zombies they are malformed creatures who are barely human. As always thanks to everyone and anyone who donated on Patreon, checked this episode out, or shared a tweet/shared a post on FB/gave us love by recommending us to someone. We love you forever for listening. Any questions, comments, suggestions for movies and guests, or if you yourself want to join us for a movie viewing or even an episode, can be sent to thehorrorbiz@gmail.com. We would love to hear from you! Special thanks to Jen for not only coming on to talk Yuzna with us but for graciously hosting the recording of this episode in her home! Thanks always to Justin Miller and Doug Tilley for their technical contributions and fliers, Mike Smaczylo for the shirts and fliers (you can check more of his work out at here), and also thanks to Josh Alvarez for the theme song, Chris, Brad, Alexis, and LVAC for the support and buttons (check them out at www.xlvacx.com), and a HUGE thank you to anyone who retweeted us or shared something on Faceb...

Greetings, and welcome back to Horror Business, the most unholy podcast in all the land. In this episode we’re talking two films dealing with teenagers turning to the dark power of Satan to help them find their way in the world: 1982’s Evilspeak and 1989’s 976 Evil. We’re joined on this episode by longtime friend of the podcast and friend in general Andrew McArdle from Washington D.C. First and foremost we want to give a shoutout to our sponsors over at Lehigh Valley Apparel Creations, the premiere screenprinting company of the Lehigh Valley. Chris Reject and his merry band of miscreants are ready to work with you to bring to life your vision of a tshirt for your business, band, project, or whatever else it is you need represented by a shirt, sweater, pin, or coozy. Head on over to www.xlvacx.com to check them out. Thanks! We begin by talking about what horror related things we had done lately. Andrew discusses catching a screening of Ringu in Pittsburgh, Liam talks about attending the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival, and Justin talks about recently watching the Netflix original The Babysitter. Liam and Justin then briefly discuss the recent screening of Get Out at Lafayette University, hosted by Liam himself! Up first is 1981’s Evilspeak. We begin by giving a basic outline of the plot. We talk about how Clint Howard’s unlikely characterization as a normal sympathetic character in this film. We briefly discuss the dynamics of race in this movie, in that Howard’s character’s only friend is a black student who likely experiences being ostracized at the military academy and feels sympathy for a fellow outcast. The heavily dated portrayal of computers in this movie is discussed. The task the film has of taking a character that will eventually become the villain and making them initially sympathetic is touched upon, as is the character arc of the bullies who harass Howard’s character and drive him to embracing whatever dark power is behind all of this. The concept of “male rape” and how the hyper masculine and threatening nature of the antagonists plays a heavy part in the how they relate to Howard’s character and how that in turn relates to the films scant portrayal of women as hypersexual objects is discussed. The emphasis of masculinity in the world of magic and Satanism is likewise touched upon. The sad quality of Howard’s character turning to evil not out of a lust for power or fortune but instead merely to belong in the world is examined, as is the nature in theology of God coming off as the ‘god of the bullies’ while Satan comes off as the ‘god of the underdogs’. The various special effects of the film are talked about, and Liam touches upon the disjointed and nonsensical nature of the chaplain’s sermon in a particularly FX heavy scene. The especially effective climax of the film is examined. The threat of rape against male characters is examined again, as is the sexual overtones of all the attacks on female characters. Up next we talk 1989’s 976 Evil. We begin by talking about how popular the film was in the early 90’s and how often it was shown on cable TV, as well as how hyped it was due to the involvement of Robert Englund and Stephen Geoffreys. We begin by giving a basic outline of the plot, followed by a brief discussion of the somewhat obsolete phenomenon of the 976 number. Stephen Geoffreys tendency to play characters who come off as somewhat creepy, whether or not they are sympathetic and still like i.e. Evil Ed from Fright Night, or Hoax in 976 Evil is discussed, as is Geoffreys strength as an actor. The differences between Hoax and Evil Ed are dissected. The difference between Howard’s character in Evilspeak and Geoffreys’ character in 976 Evil are discussed, especially in the difference that Geoffreys is unsettling and off the whole time as opposed to Howard who has to be seduced and lured into embracing evil. Some of the horrific imagery of the film is touched upon,
Happy month of Halloween! We've spent the last couple of weeks at different film festivals, including the Shawna Shea Film Festival and Brooklyn Horror Film Festival. On top of winning two awards, we watched a lot of excellent films, and learned a lot about ourselves, our strengths, our weaknesses and were able to realize what some of our near-future goals are. An important part of being able to grow and improve your craft is the ability to self-reflect, self-critique and look at your own work objectively. It's not the easiest thing to do, but it is imperative to your personal growth as a filmmaker and artist. On this episode we discuss what we've learned over the past few weeks and how we (and you!) can work to improve our films. November 4th at 9:30pm, Linsdays new film "Beneath" is screening as part of the New York Short Film Festival at Cinema Village in Manhattan! Tickets go on sale this week. Greetings boils and ghouls, and welcome back to Horror Business, the podcast that’s as hot as love. We have jam packed slam bang of an episode for this week and we know you’re gonna love it. This episode we did a retrospective of the first three Phantasm films, and were joined by Josh Alvarez of Cinepunx to help us dissect this classic franchise. In addition to Josh being on Horror Business to talk about the first three movies, we’re actually going to carry the conversation over to Cinepunx later this week to discuss the final two films in the Phantasm franchise. I told you we had a treat for you guys. We begin by talking about what we’ve seen or done recently in the realm of horror. We talk about the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival, Monster Mania Con, Josh seeing Halloween III for the first time, and Josh having a semi run in with the great Bill Mosely in Texas. Naturally we begin with the first Phantasm film. We discuss our first encounter with the film, how we’ve come to appreciate it, the very unique narrative and style of the film, and how it remains unlike anything else to this day. Of note we focus on the performance of Angus Scrimm as the Tall Man and the films inconsistent narrative as virtue to keep the viewer unsettled. The second film in the franchise is discussed next. Amongst other things we talk about the uneven tone of the movie in that it seems to be back and forth between horror and action, the film suffering from the shortcomings of both late 80s action and late 80s horror, Reggie’s weird libido, and the unnecessary opening sequence. Next we tackle the third film in the franchise. We talk about the continuing feeling of ‘is this a dream?’ throughout these movies, Coscarelli’s tendency to be a bit ‘on the nose’ about everything, the unevenness of tone yet again in this film, Reggie’s continuing tendency to push the boundaries between decent and indecent when it comes to sex, and the future of the Phantasm franchise after this film. For the conclusion of our Phantasm retrospective check out the upcoming episode of Cinepunx at www.cinepunx.com. Follow them on twitter and Instagram at @cinepunx. As always thanks to everyone and anyone who checked this episode out, or shared a tweet/shared a post on FB/gave us love by recommending us to someone. Thanks to Josh not only for the theme song but also for being gracious enough to appear on this episode and record it at his house. We love you forever for listening. Any questions, comments, suggestions for movies and guests, or if you yourself want to join us for a movie viewing or even an episode, can be sent to thehorrorbiz@gmail.com. Huge thanks to Jeff Thibault for getting us the Robert Englund and Bill Moseley bumpers. Thanks to those two as well for recording the bumpers. Thanks always to Justin Miller and Doug Tilley for their technical contributions, Mike Smaczylo for the awesome fliers, and also once again thanks to Josh “Bad Larry” Alvarez for the theme song, Follow us on Twitter at @thehorrorbiz666, like us on Facebook, and remember to rate, review, and subscribe to us on ITunes!
