What happens when women bring traditional folklore into the horror genre and subvert it? You get award-winning feature length films, Iranian vampires and Mayan werewolves to name a few examples. Ella Al-Shamahi is joined by Iranian-American filmmaker Ana Lily Amirpour and Mexican filmmaker Gigi Saul Guerrero to discuss how to create horror on screen.Ana Lily Amirpour's award-winning debut feature film, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, is a Persian-language Western-horror. It follows a skateboarding vampire who wears a chador and haunts the fictional Iranian ghost-town of Bad City. Feminist readings have interpreted the vampire as a vigilante who preys on men that disrespect women. Ana's later films have included big stars such as Kate Hudson, Suki Waterhouse, Jason Momoa and Keanu Reeves.Gigi Saul Guerrero is known by fans as La Muñeca Del Terror, which means The Horror Babe. She gained recognition for La Quinceañera, a horror series based on the Mexican traditional celebration of a girl's fifteenth birthday. Her film Culture Shock follows a Mexican woman who crosses the border into the US in hope of finding the American dream. What she finds instead is an American nightmare. Gigi's work often draws from Mesoamerican folklore and Mexican tradition. Producer: Elena Angelides(Image: Gigi Saul Guerrero. Credit: Luchagore Productions. And Ana Lily Amirpour. Gigi Saul Guerrero: Culture Shock, Horror, and Filmmaking from Two Worlds In this insightful conversation with filmmaker Gigi Saul Guerrero, Danny explores Gigi's journey from Mexico City to Canada, where cultural differences inspired her film Culture Shock. They discuss the influence of her Mexican heritage and how she integrates it into her work, particularly in the horror genre, referencing figures like Guillermo del Toro. Gigi opens up about the personal stories that inspire her films, from her mother's cult experiences to her own fears rooted in rich Mexican folklore. She also shares how her love for cinema was sparked by films like Children of Men and her passion for storytelling that reflects humanity's darker side. The conversation also touches on Gigi's brand, @mexicangorefest , and its mission to become a horror staple like Blumhouse. Gigi reflects on the challenges of working on Satanic Hispanics, incorporating indigenous folklore, and the spooky occurrences that happened on set. To wrap up, Danny and Gigi bond over their shared love of vampire movies like Interview with the Vampire. Akela Cooper has become a low key regular on our humble little podcast. We raved about M3gan earlier this year and covered Hell Fest previously. We talk about her latest project which covers one of horror's most popular tropes. Earlier this year, we were shocked to hear that Glen Danzig would be making an appearance at the Cannes Film Festival. He recently showed up at Fantastic Fest and made waves at a screening of V/H/S/85.Nothing says Halloween like a good old fashioned haunted amusement park. (Not an amusement park that is literally haunted, but one that is horror themed, though the former is also really cool.) Scream Park from 2013 is a goofy idea that has promise for a fun horror movie. A scary park is having financial woes, so the owner decides to stage a series of murders to drum up interest. It may not be the best way to get people to pay for your rides, but it works for an indie horror movie. And it was clearly made with love as it has horror vibes from the 1970s and 80s. But there are a lot of issues. From bad pacing to its poor treatment of its female characters - including a kill that is funny and gross for all the wrong reasons -, the film will constantly frustrate audiences.Spooktacular! Will also bother those who watch, but in a different way. Again, it is a great idea; the documentary looks at the rise, fall, and lasting impact of Spooky World, the first haunted amusement park. There is lots of great archival footage and the whole thing is filled with a sense of nostalgia. But it also comes with a lot of filler. Constant clips of Vincent Price movies and incomplete tangents take away from the overall feeling. There is a lot to like here, but was it enough? V/H/S/99 is a 2022 American found footage horror anthology film, and the fifth installment in the V/H/S film series. The film features segments from Johannes Roberts, Vanessa & Joseph Winter, Maggie Levin, Tyler MacIntyre, and Flying Lotus. The film is presented as a mixtape of five different narratives set in 1999. Unlike in the previous V/H/S entries, the film does not have an overarching frame narrative inbetween each short. Instead, short stop-motion animations of toy soldiers — made by one of the characters from "The Gawkers" — serve as interludes. 1000 stickers for $79 ONLY at this link www.riotstickers.com/frumess - the best in the business! We do not spend enough time looking at what is coming up. We talk about news here and there, but an actual deep dive into upcoming genre films rarely comes up. This week, we do just that. We discuss the movies we are looking forward to, werewolves, and what it takes to scream like a Goonie. The first movie we discuss is a classic of the genre. Dario Argento's Suspira is one of the most important movies in horror. It affects on genre cinema are clear. How often have you hear that something looks like Suspiria? What is rarely talked about is how if affected the entire medium.Of course, we had to talk about its kickass soundtrack and look. But we also discuss the financial themes, how it is like Mean Girls, and how you should whisper its name. Everyone has heard of Suspira, but few have sat and talked about it like we do.Satanic Hispanics is an anthology that made its World Premiere at Fantastic Fest. Made by five Latino filmmakers, the movie mixes horror, comedy, and the occult. It is a nice change of pace from an anthology we recently covered and is a template for how to make these kinds of movies the correct way.Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Filmmaker Gigi Saul Guerrero -- whose Into the Dark episode Culture Shock just landed on Hollywood Suite in Canada -- discusses the impact of William Friedkin's The Exorcist on her young psyche, and the creative path she's been on ever since. Your genial host Norm Wilner wonders why everyone wants to talk about horror movies lately ... not that he minds, of course.
It's important to support the Can-Con....On this episode and in celebration of episode #400 (We Can't Believe It Either) we're diving into some cinema from a Canadian talent who is making good in Hollywood and we dive into that 'Culture Shock'.This thriller follows a young Mexican woman in pursuit of the American Dream, who crosses illegally into the United States, only to find herself in an American nightmare. As a part of the 'Into The Dark' anthology series from Blumhouse Television, this is the feature debut of our very own Gigi Saul Guerrero who has gone on to make other films like 'Bingo Hell' which is now on Prime Video with tons of other projects in development. While this has been available via Hulu with our friends to the south of us for quite some time, it's actually debuting on Hollywood Suite here in Canada, TODAY.We got to sit down with Gigi and talk about how she got the job, the importance of the story to her how she connected to it as a Mexican-Canadian,, navigating the business in LA and so very much more....
Directed by Gigi Saul Guerrero, CULTURE SHOCK is a dark sci-fi horror that tells the story of one young woman's attempt to cross the Mexican border looking for a new life in America. However, when the dream becomes a nightmare, she must fight to save her life and preserve her cultural heritage. In this 1on1, we speak with Guerrero about the power of elevated horror, the death of the American Dream, and working with THE OFFICE's Creed Bratton.
Gigi Saul Guerrero directs Culture Shock, an inventive and entertaining film built around the topic of illegal immigration. Marisol is a woman who, in the film's first act, is doing everything she can to escape the horrific situations of her life south of the border by heading north to the United States. Once she makes it to the US, she is thrust into an “American dream” so idyllic that it seems practically surreal. Culture Shock has some strong Get Out vibes in terms of how the story and its implications are presented, and it's one of the better entries of the first season of Into the Dark. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/you-betterknow4/message

Gigi Guerrero is a Mexican-Canadian Filmmaker, Writer and Actress. She started her career making shorts including the Mexican wrestler gorefest, Luchagore which is now on Shudder. Gigi made her feature debut with the scathingly confrontational social commentary feature Culture Shock for Blumhouse as a part of their Into the Dark series, now streaming on Hulu. Today, Gigi is directing episodes of The Purge TV series, also for Blumhouse, and is attached to a new feature project about the Mexican religious icon, Santa Muerte. She is one of the most exciting emerging new voices in horror and I enjoyed talking to her about how she got started, her favorite Mexican horror movies, and as always, her recommended strategies for aspiring directors. Here without further are Gigi Saul Guerrero's tips for aspiring horror filmmakers:. "Shorts are the shit.” A lot of filmmakers praise the value of shorts for their priceless educational value. Gigi, who's done 18 shorts, claims that they are best way to learn the craft of filmmaking fast. As simple as it may seem, each short incrementally gets you more familiar with the craft of filmmaking and it does this on a condensed timeline. Furthermore, shorts are also a way for first-time directors to purge their mistakes and amateur habits in a low risk environment which is important too. Doing shorts also offers you the opportunity to build relationships with a crew that you can move onto bigger projects with. Finish what you start. Gigi mentions that the caveat to the importance of shorts, is the importance having enough discipline to finish them. Frequently filmmakers have ‘multiple projects in varying stages of production' but nothing to their name that is done. This is not great for your career, because people need to see evidence that you can finish something. Through finishing her 18 shorts Gigi learned invaluable lessons about filmmaking while demonstrating her style, voice, vision, and ability to finish what she started. Now she's working with Blumhouse. Go with your gut. TV sets are notoriously grueling production experiences because of their breakneck pace and relentless shooting schedules. But a lot of producers and directors who have worked on TV sets, credit the experience with giving them a fast-acting production rhythm which required them to have more trust in their own intuition since there is next to no room for second guessing anything on such a timeline. Gigi's work on The Purge taught her just this and she credits is as a very valuable experience for her as a director.
