Having found myself on the wrong side of 55, I attempt to distract from this devastating realisation by responding to some Movie Monday feedback before indulging in a little retail therapy. First up is James Knight with a call about September's movie Richard Donner's Superman, then we have calls from Joe Richter of Hindsighless and MW Lewis of The Worlds of MW Lewis regarding the October choice Fred Dekker's Monster Squad. I mention a Dungeon Craft review of Chris McDowall's Mythic Bastionland that you can watch here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NsJ5px6_8ew This is followed by that strangest of phenomena, the audio unboxing. I take a peek inside Free League's new Vaesen Starter Set, Casey Garske's Stay Frost Remastered, Loke Battle Mats' Dungeon Designer's Deck (as featured on Geek Gamers) and Diogo Nogueira's Screams Amongst The Stars. Check out the Dungeon Designer's Deck here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FuEq0yen-Y This month's Movie Monday is 1984's animated pre-Ghibli classic Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind directed by Hayao Miyazaki. That episode will air on 24th, so please send your submissions by the 22th if you'd like to be included in the show. Kathryn Bigelow's Near Dark This year Halloween fell on a weekend . . . We've come to the end of the Halloween season. Two months of Vampire movies finds us ending on a cult favorite from the 1980s. In 1987 Kathryn Bigelow would direct her first solo-outing by re-imagining the Vampire film as a Neo-Western centered around a young couple and the family of vampires that haunt and terrorize a modern Southwest. Featuring Adrian Pasdar as Caleb Colton, a young man bitten and "turned" by the seductive Mae and his "adoption" into a troubling imagining on the traveling "nuclear family" including Bill Paxton, Jenette Goldstein, and Lance Henriksen. The film certainly has its problems however it is an assured and impressive debut directorial feature for Bigelow and captivating performances from her Vampire Family. This '80s flick is to All Hallows' Eve what "A Christmas Story" is to Christmas: a true classic deserving a 24-hour marathon and a wild all-night celebration where blood takes the place of alcohol. Director Tom Holland's heartfelt homage to vampire movies breathed new life into a horror subgenre that was, sadly, starting to fade away, much like an undead creature of the night. It brought the vampire back into the spotlight, setting the stage for other nostalgic blood-sucking hits of the era, such as "The Lost Boys", "Near Dark", and "Bram Stoker's Dracula".So grab your binoculars, crucifix, and garlic necklace as Tim Williams and guest co-host Chris Evans discuss “Fright Night” from 1985 on this special Halloween episode of the 80s Flick Flashback podcast! Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode:According to Chris Sarandon, he wanted Jerry to whistle "Whistle While You Work" rather than "Strangers in the Night" when first confronting Charley. But Disney would not give their permission to use the song.To evoke a genuine frightened reaction when Charley first sees Amy as a vampire, William Ragsdale did not see the stunt actress in makeup beforehand.Evil Ed's complex death scene, designed by Edlund and Bruno, strategically used darkness and quick cuts to obscure details. They intentionally reduced the lighting, relying on elements like a swinging chandelier that Wolf Ed crashes into. Visual effects cinematographer Bill Neil stated this swinging light was crucial, as the shifting shadows allowed them to hold shots longer, making the "brief glimpses" of the character highly effective.Sources:Wikipedia, IMDB, Box Office Mojohttps://www.dreadcentral.com/lists/261132/fearsome-facts-8-things-didnt-know-fright-night-1985/Some sections were composed by ChatGPTWe'd love to hear your thoughts on our podcast! VYS0052 | Goddamn Shit-sucking Vampires - Halloween 2025: The Lost Boys - Vayse to Face with Sorcha Ní Fhlain - Show Notes "Sleep all day. Party all night. Never grow old. Never die." - Sounds exhausting. This is not how Hine and Buckley do Halloween anymore. So, instead of re-living their twenties, or the Lost Decade, as they call it, they talk to Dr Sorcha Ní Fhlainn about the greatest horror movie of the 1980s, or the Lost Boys, as they call it. Sorcha is a film critic, a writer, an academic - a Reader in Film Studies with a specialism in American Film at Manchester Metropolitan University specialising in Gothic Studies and Horror Cinema, with a particular focus on Vampires - and an all-round legend who helps Hine and Buckley get their teeth stuck deep into Joel Schumacher's 1987 masterpiece without getting lost in the gory details (but never over-looking the Corey details). The Lost Boys stands up well to scrutiny (well, mostly...kind of...) and Sorcha leads a discussion ranging from the transplanting of vampiric folklore from dark-ages Europe to MTV-era USA, the history of the vampire as a metaphor in literature and cinema, the way in which the Lost Boys and contemporary 1980s vampire movies, Near Dark and Fright Night contributed to queer horror, exactly what it is that makes the Lost Boys one of the greatest movies of all time... and what's the deal with the greased up, pumped up, beach-party thrusting sax-player and why is it that he's brilliant? We're celebrating Halloween again on the latest episode of the Cult Film Club and this year we're taking a hard look at the 1987 neo-western horror flick, Near Dark. Directed by Kathryn Bigelow and starring half the cast of Aliens, this vampire flick is a hugely influential cult flick and we're so glad to finally tackle it.
In this episode, we sink our teeth into Near Dark (1987), the gritty, neo-western vampire classic directed by the legendary Kathryn Bigelow. This film blends horror, romance, and blood-soaked Americana in a way that still hits hard decades later — and we're kicking off our month-long vampire movie celebration with it!But I'm not going at it solo this time… Joining me for this dark ride is Joe La Scola from @MovieDumpster . Together, we'll dig into the film's unforgettable cast, haunting atmosphere, and what makes Near Dark stand out from your typical vampire flick. It's the start of our Spooky Month — all vampire movies, all October long!#NearDark #KathrynBigelow #VampireMovies #MovieReview #SpookySeason #MovieDumpster #HorrorCommunityFollow Us: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/video_villa_entertainment TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@videovillaentmt Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100086204155260&mibextid=LQQJ4d Website: https://www.videovillaentertainment.com

THE SWIMMER (1968) We dive deep in to The Swimmer and discuss and analyze, maybe just a little bit the glorious film directed by Frank Perry, based on a screenplay by Eleanor Perry, from the 12 page short story by John Cheever. "Well-off ad man Ned Merrill (Burt Lancaster) is visiting a friend when he notices the abundance of backyard pools that populate their upscale suburb. Ned suddenly decides that he'd like to travel the eight miles back to his own home by simply swimming across every pool in town."If you're reading this I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support. Welcome to this season's Halloween Series! To kick things off, Anna and Derek chat about the rules of vampirism, the criminal under usage of Jenette Goldstein, and much more during their discussion of Kathryn Bigelow's Near Dark (1987).Connect with '80s Movie Montage on Facebook, Bluesky or Instagram! It's the same handle for all three... @80smontagepod.Anna Keizer and Derek Dehanke are the co-hosts of ‘80s Movie Montage. The idea for the podcast came when they realized just how much they talk – a lot – when watching films from their favorite cinematic era. Their wedding theme was “a light nod to the ‘80s,” so there's that, too. Both hail from the Midwest but have called Los Angeles home for several years now. Anna is a writer who received her B.A. in Film/Video from Columbia College Chicago and M.A. in Film Studies from Chapman University. Her dark comedy short She Had It Coming was an Official Selection of 25 film festivals with several awards won for it among them. Derek is an attorney who also likes movies. It is a point of pride that most of their podcast episodes are longer than the movies they cover. We'd love to hear from you! Send us a text message.
One this rootin'-tootin' episode of HOW DO YOU DO, FELLOW KIDS? we're checking out the made-for-HBO western THE LAST OUTLAW from 1993 featuring a murderer's row of early 90s character actors: Mickey Rourke, Dermot Mulroney, Ted Levine, John C. McGinley, Keith David and - of course - Steve Buscemi! Not only that, it was written by Eric Red (who wrote THE HITCHER and NEAR DARK) and directed by THE QUIET EARTH/YOUNG GUNS II/FREEJACK's Geoff Murphy and features plenty of ultra-violence in a (transparently) WILD BUNCH-inspired revenge tale. All THAT and the latest Steve Buscemi news! The post Episode 289 – How Do You Do, Fellow Kids? – The Last Outlaw (1993) first appeared on Cinema Smorgasbord.

Brimming with vicious bloodletting, neon beer signs, and Bill Paxton hootin' and hollerin', “Near Dark” might be the high watermark for vampire Westerns. I'm elated to have film critic and author Sarah Welch-Larson (Bright Wall/Dark Room) on the pod this week. She's a “Near Dark” turbofan, with as many deep thoughts on what the film suggests about Manifest Destiny as she has musings on whether these Oklahoma vampires have ever tried roadkill. Let's ride! Recorded on: Tuesday September 10th, 2024 Hola, fans! That Horror Show Podcast is back with a brand new episode that will bring joy and excitement to your eardrums! Those lovable hosts Timothy Kazda and Chris Koenig have been doing some hardcore (eh, maybe softcore?) WWE practice for this very special episode. Yes, it's a double-feature horror movie review...BUT, it's also a little different in its approach. Basically, Chris and Tim review two 80s horror movies with a very similar theme that came out within the same year, and see which one is better than the other. In the case of this episode, it's none other than Joel Schumacher's set-in-stone classic "The Lost Boys" (1987) vs. Kathryn Bigelow's cult classic "Near Dark" (1987)...in other words, to movies that couldn't be anymore different...or are they??? Hey, you gotta listen to find out what the boys think. And also, none other than Nate from 'Kids Corner' will provide his brief take on both movies as well! * Edit update: Unfortunately, Nate could not make the recording session.
On the latest episode of the podcast, Jamie just wants to take a few moments to 'Tickle the Monster', Doug's television really wants him to watch Juwanna Mann instead of Near Dark, and we both agree that there needs to be a new Vampire handbook or pamphlet printed much like the Handbook to the Recently Deceased in Beetlejuice. Take a moment to stop and listen to the night, chug that mug of waitress blood, and join us as we take in a movie filled with vampires, explosions and shootouts with cops...that's actually just a love story as we discuss the incredible Kathryn Bigelow film, Near Dark!Visit our YouTube ChannelMerch on TeePublic Follow us on TwitterFollow on InstagramFind us on FacebookVisit our Website
I had Josh Freydkis on to discuss the 1987 movie 'Near Dark'. Hell yeah.
Johnny Spoiler dishes out his unique and hilarious take on the latest in TV, movies, and more. The episode kicks off with some unconventional advice—If your baby mama wants you to move to Florida, think twice!—with Johnny comparing Florida to a “dark space between your balls and your butthole.” From there, things only get wilder. Johnny breaks down Ryan Murphy's new show, "The Beauty," featuring a bizarre STD that makes you more attractive while it kills you. He speculates about Ashton Kutcher and Evan Peters, and how Kutcher might be dodging the spotlight for now. The episode dives into horror movie history as Johnny discusses cult favorite Near Dark and praises director Kathryn Bigelow. Want to spice up your Halloween watchlist? Tune in for his recommendation! Later, Johnny gives the lowdown on the monster-filled flick Lurking Fear and its messy production woes. Does it get a binge now, binge later, or binge never rating? Find out in this deep dive into schlocky horror classics! Finally, Johnny takes a jab at vampire-gentrified towns with his review of the new Salem's Lot on Max and talks about how vampires and real estate investments might go hand in hand.
