Brimming with vicious bloodletting, neon beer signs, and Bill Paxton hootin' and hollerin', “Near Dark” might be the high watermark for vampire Westerns. I'm elated to have film critic and author Sarah Welch-Larson (Bright Wall/Dark Room) on the pod this week. She's a “Near Dark” turbofan, with as many deep thoughts on what the film suggests about Manifest Destiny as she has musings on whether these Oklahoma vampires have ever tried roadkill. Let's ride! Recorded on:  Tuesday September 10th, 2024 Hola, fans! That Horror Show Podcast is back with a brand new episode that will bring joy and excitement to your eardrums! Those lovable hosts Timothy Kazda and Chris Koenig have been doing some hardcore (eh, maybe softcore?) WWE practice for this very special episode. Yes, it's a double-feature horror movie review...BUT, it's also a little different in its approach. Basically, Chris and Tim review two 80s horror movies with a very similar theme that came out within the same year, and see which one is better than the other. In the case of this episode, it's none other than Joel Schumacher's set-in-stone classic "The Lost Boys" (1987) vs. Kathryn Bigelow's cult classic "Near Dark" (1987)...in other words, to movies that couldn't be anymore different...or are they??? Hey, you gotta listen to find out what the boys think. And also, none other than Nate from 'Kids Corner' will provide his brief take on both movies as well!    * Edit update: Unfortunately, Nate could not make the recording session.

He speculates about Ashton Kutcher and Evan Peters, and how Kutcher might be dodging the spotlight for now. The episode dives into horror movie history as Johnny discusses cult favorite Near Dark and praises director Kathryn Bigelow. Want to spice up your Halloween watchlist? Tune in for his recommendation! Later, Johnny gives the lowdown on the monster-filled flick Lurking Fear and its messy production woes. Does it get a binge now, binge later, or binge never rating? Find out in this deep dive into schlocky horror classics! Finally, Johnny takes a jab at vampire-gentrified towns with his review of the new Salem's Lot on Max and talks about how vampires and real estate investments might go hand in hand. Russell Crowe is back again with his clerical collar fighting demons! A little over a year after The Pope's Exorcist (2023) was released, a new movie called The Exorcism has been released directed by Joshua John Miller. Joshua John Miller is the son of Jason Miller who played Father Damien Karras in the 1973 horror film The Exorcist! Joshua John Miller was also a child actor who starred in movies like River's Edge, Near Dark, Class of 1999, and Teen Witch. In his directorial debut The Exorcism (2024), Joshua John Miller directs Russell Crowe as Anthony Miller, an actor with a deteriorating mental state who melts down as he's working on an exorcism horror movie. The film also stars Ryan Simpkins, Sam Worthington, Chloe Bailey, Adam Goldberg, Adrian Pasdar, and David Hyde Pierce. Will it live up to the dizzying heights of The Pope's Exorcist? We will let you know!

In this Episode: In this episode, Our Heroes discuss the 1987 film "Near Dark" with special guest Umba the Street Taco! We explore the film's resonance with the 80s vibe, and its appeal to the goth community. We also gush (blood) over its unique atmosphere as a love story and neo-western, and couldn't help but chuckle at the absence of Lost Boys saxophone music—a staple of the era! The film's cast and Tangerine Dream soundtrack are covered, along with the upcoming 4K release. We touch on James Cameron's influence, Catherine Bigelow's direction, and the various sweet vehicles featured in the movie. The performances of Lance Henriksen, Bill Paxton, and Jeanette Goldstein receive praise, with a special mention of the chemistry among the cast and clever use of the Aliens crew as a cost saving chemistry shortcut. We delve into the characters' individual stories, the film's cinematography, and its unconventional elements. Bigelow's unique style and the film's ahead-of-its-time nature are appreciated. We share trivia, discuss the copious night shots, visual effects, and reflect on our initial reactions to the movie as teenagers. "Near Dark" is considered a highly recommended time capsule from 1987, noted for its character study, beautiful cinematography, and potential influence on the goth genre. The episode concludes with our thoughts on the film's ambiguous ending and the possibility of a sequel. Takeaways: Near Dark perfectly captures the mood of the 80, and is a treasured film among goths. The movie is a love story and a neo-western, with a unique atmosphere. This movie was way ahead and takes a unique approach to vampires, focusing on their character development rather than traditional vampire tropes. James Cameron had a significant influence on the production of Near Dark. The use of the film DNA from 'Aliens' in 'Near Dark' allowed for strong chemistry among the cast. The soundtrack by Tangerine Dream is praised for its seamless integration into the film and its ability to enhance the mood. The production of was challenging, with 40 out of 47 shooting days taking place at night. Today on the show we have legendary actor Lance Henriksen. I had the pleasure of work with Lance on my film Red Princess Blues: Genesis and if was a surreal experience.Lance has been in over 300 films through-out his remarkable career. He's mentored Tarzan, Evel Knievel and the Antichrist, and fought Terminators, Aliens, Predators, Pumpkinhead, Pinhead, Bigfoot, Superman, the Autobots, Mr. T, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal. He's worked with directors James Cameron, Steven Spielberg, Kathryn Bigelow, Sidney Lumet, Francois Truffaut, John Huston, Walter Hill, David Fincher, John Woo, Jim Jarmusch and Sam Raimi, but this is just skimming the surface. An intense, versatile actor as adept at playing clean-cut FBI agents as he is psychotic motorcycle-gang leaders, who can go from portraying soulless, murderous vampires to burned-out, world-weary homicide detectives, Lance Henriksen has starred in a variety of films that have allowed him to stretch his talents just about as far as an actor could possibly hope.He played Awful Knoffel in the TNT original movie EVIL KNIEVEL, directed by John Badham and executive produced by Mel Gibson. Henriksen portrayed Awful Knoffel in this project based on the life of the famed daredevil, played by George Eads. Henriksen starred for three seasons (1996-1999) on Millennium, Fox-TV's critically acclaimed series created by Chris Carter (The X-Files).His performance as Frank Black, a retired FBI agent who has the ability to get inside the minds of killers, landed him three consecutive Golden Globe nominations for "Best Performance by a Lead Actor in a Drama Series" and a People's Choice Award nomination for "Favorite New TV Male Star."Henriksen was born in New York City. His mother, Margueritte, was a waitress, dance instructor, and model. His father, James Marin Henriksen, who was from Tønsberg, Norway, was a boxer and merchant sailor.Henriksen studied at the Actors Studio and began his career off-Broadway in Eugene O'Neill's Three Plays of the Sea. One of his first film appearances was as an FBI agent in Sidney Lumet's DOG DAY AFTERNOON, followed by parts in Lumet's NETWORK and PRINCE OF THE CITY.He then appeared in Steven Spielberg's CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND with Richard Dreyfuss and François Truffaut, DAMIEN: OMEN II and in Philip Kaufman's THE RIGHT STUFF, in which he played Mercury astronaut Capt. Wally Schirra.James Cameron cast Henriksen in his first directorial effort, PIRANHA II: THE SPAWNING, then used him again in THE TERMINATOR and as the android Bishop in the sci-fi classic ALIENS. Sam Raimi cast Henriksen as an outrageously garbed gunfighter in his quirky western THE QUICK AND THE DEAD. Henriksen has also appeared in what has developed into a cult classic: Kathryn Bigelow's NEAR DARK, in which he plays the head of a clan of murderous redneck vampires. He was nominated for a Golden Satellite Award for his portrayal of Abraham Lincoln in the TNT original film THE DAY LINCOLN WAS SHOT.In addition to his abilities as an actor, Henriksen is an accomplished painter and potter. His talent as a ceramist has enabled him to create some of the most unusual ceramic artworks available on the art market today. His new film is called Alpha Rift.Nolan Parthmore was just a regular guy, hanging with friends, working his game store, flirting with his co-worker, then one day, destiny came calling. A courier delivers a mysterious antique helmet with no note or description. When Nolan puts it on, his whole world changes. The helmet comes to life and calls out to an evil demon, Lord Dragsmere, who was imprisoned by Nolan's deceased father. Nolan soon discovers he is next in the bloodline, heir to The Nobleman, destined to become a hero whether he wants to be or not. Since the Dark Ages, the Noblemen have been guardians against the 13 Devil's Apostles: dark forces escaped from hell and let loose upon on earth. Generations later, it's the heirs of these original knights that possess the power to open the Alpha Rift:the only defense against these supernatural foes.Enjoy my conversation with Lance Henriksen.
