We covered over fifty movies that were released in 2024. Naturally, some were better than others. Unfortunately, when you cover as much stuff as we did, some things end up being bad. As in, REALLY bad. Over the next two weeks, we are going to talk about the films from 2024 that stood out the most to us. First things first, we are messing with the worst. It's not often that movies make us mad. Bored or frustrated, but actual anger? That just does not happen. Especially when you deal with indie cinema as much as we do. We understand that budgets will not be as high, there are not as many resources, and creativity is not limited to the script. Indie films get a pass from us when it comes to special effects, limited locations, and at times, the acting. But there are times when a movie will leave us with a very bad impression. (Blake is still fuming over Soft & Quiet.) This year, we covered two of the most infuriating films we have ever seen. One of them seemed like it was an intentional slap to the faces of anyone who has ever claimed to like horror movies. It made a point of making things very personal. The other was a documentary that stubbornly refused to back up any of its claims, had nothing interesting to say, and even lied to the audience.Thankfully, there were films that managed to just simply be bad. We discuss a thematic trilogy that was a great idea in theory, a supposed body horror movie that is more confusing than captivating, and a script that sounds like it was written by an edgy fifteen year old. This week we look back on our least favorite movies of 2024. Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Sometimes you don't want your horror movies locally sourced. Sometimes you want to be terrorized by some fine films from overseas. In this Penultimate Versus episode, we travel to the far east....and then even further east as we break down "Ringu" from Japan and "Laddaland" from Thailand. One final match up after this one to determine who gets creative control over next season.
It is almost impossible to quantify what Roger Corman has done for horror. He pretty much invented B horror, launched the careers of some of the most talented directors of all time, and is behind some of the most iconic genre films of all time. His influence can be seen in the video box art that older fans pine about and in podcasts like our own. He is a true icon.Typecasting is an interesting part of Hollywood. Some like scream queens and rom-com hunks lean into it. Others try to break out of the box others try to put them in. Think all of the comedic actors who have tried their hands at serious roles or child actors who appeared in more risque fare. It is always a shame to see an actor who obviously has a range of talents regulated to the same types of roles. But what if an actor typecasts themselves?Faceless After Dark stars Terrifer's Jenna Kanell as an actor whose breakout role was in a movie about a killer clown. The synopsis is a little misleading (when she is held hostage by a fan dressed as said clown, she must do whatever she can to survive) as it is more of a revenge story than the logline implies. And that is just the first confusing thing. The lead character is completely unlikable, the direction is headache inducing, and motivations are nonsensical. Are we supposed to root for Bowie Davidson (Kanell)? Why does she hate her fans so much? Is jealousy truly the root of all evil. Faceless After Dark has something to say, and it touches on real issues like toxic fandom and gender, but it is all done in a way that is confusing and just plain insulting. This movie was absolutely directed towards Terrifer fans and they are not going to like what it has to say.Bruceploitation Month ends with the most famous Bruce Lee imitator of all. He was also the person who brought an end to the genre. Initially, Jackie Chan was supposed to continue in the footsteps of Dragon Lee, Bruce Li, Bruce Lea, and so many others. He did not want that and proceeded to carve out his own name. But not before he gave us 1976's New Fist of Fury.Xenophobia, confounding death scenes, a complete downer of an ending and, of course, a completely random Bruce Lee reference are all part of the film. It is a chance to see Jackie Chan very early in his career and has a powerful story to boot. At least, it seems powerful. Since the subtitles do not translate everything, we are left to assume that much of what is happening is very poignant and meaningful. The final shot certainly left us feeling something; too bad none of it was good. Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. It's so unfair that we only celebrate mommies one day out of the whole year, so we here at Spooky Tuesday are taking the initiative to up the ante. This month, we're proud to present Mommy Issues May, a four-week slate of episodes dedicated both to mommies with issues and those who have issues with their mommies (because we're inclusive like that). And you know we had to start off strong, which is why we're covering Goodnight Mommy (2014) for our first episode. This Austrian horror flick is from the same team that went on to make The Lodge (2019), so you know it's going to be fucked, and it also features the ~spookiest~ thing of all: identical twins. Late Night with the Devil (2024) is making waves as the newest found-footage, real-time feature in horror, but does it live up to the hype? And what's up with that AI art controversy? We sat down in front of our TV sets to see what the deal was for ourselves, but we think we might've gotten a little sleepy halfway through — or did anyone else hallucinate that a big giant worm was part of this movie? On a new Spooky Tuesday, we're reviewing the tapes as we talk about all things aspect ratio, feminine rage, and forest orgies.References:https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/blogpost/post/bohemian-grove-where-the-rich-and-powerful-go-to-misbehave/2011/06/15/AGPV1sVH_blog.htmlhttps://screenrant.com/late-night-with-the-devil-ending-explained/https://www.indiewire.com/news/general-news/late-night-with-the-devil-ai-backlash-explained-1234966938/https://nerdist.com/article/late-night-with-the-devil-david-dastmalchian-interview/https://whorulesamerica.ucsc.edu/power/bohemian_grove_spy.htmlhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bohemian_Grove

Ariel and Candance from Not Your Final Girl are back to talk two movies that had us feeling all sorts of emotions. From a grounded film about two siblings dealing with a demon from their past to an infamous Category III Hong Kong movie that was equal parts disgusting and silly, we were all over the place. But did we like what we saw?Ariel and Candance from Not Your Final Girl are back to discuss the strangest genre films we could find. This week we have a pair of interesting movies. Our first review takes us to the streets of New York City where we talk about down to earth horror story with otherworldly elements. We then travel across the globe to Hong Kong to talk about exploitation flick that wants to push your buttons. When I Consume You is the third feature film from Perry Blackshear. We start with a discussion of how much he has improved since he debuted with They Look Like People. The movie is about a sister and brother who lean on each other for support. Just when it looks like Daphne Shaw is getting her life together, a demon from her past comes back to her haunt her.The story is about the bonds between a brother and sister and has some redemptive qualities, but is it too on the nose? Is Blackshear trying so hard to get his message across that he ruins a good story. We also discuss the performances of the two leads and talk about the recent trend of wild tonal shifts in movies.Dr. Lamb is notorious even as Category III movies. (We briefly discuss what a Category III movie is and compare them to similar films in other parts of the world.) It is about a serial killer and what the police discovered after he was caught. It sounds simple enough, but the acts he committed are unbelievably awful. Even worse, Dr. Lamb is based on a true story. The film is a straight up exploitation film that seems to take joy in disgusting its audiences. Torture, necrophilia, and assault all manage to find their way into the movie. We wonder how the story can get so downright nasty while the production looked beautiful at times. We also question how well Dr. Lamb would do in today's world and if there was an attempt at a deeper story.Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. In honor of our special guest, Fernando Gonzalez Gomez, Josh and Dave go through some of their favorite Spanish horror films. Fernando then joins us from Madrid to discuss his co-directed film, The Passenger, which released in theaters June 3rd and on VOD June 28th.
Writer/director Russell Owen joins the podcast to discuss his new film Shepherd. This filmmaker out of North Wales has been putting in work in the industry for years and has gone as far as selling his own car to get his project made. We are at the Sundance Film Festival for this week's episode. The only problem is we are short staffed. Thankfully, an old guest returns. As the fest comes to a close we talk about two genre movies that stood out to us. The first is a polite horror movie from Finland. We then talk about a dark science fiction comedy. We also have an interview with writer and director Riley Stearns. On its way to Shudder, Speak No Evil played at the Sundance Film Festival. The movie is about a family who meet a couple while there are vacationing in Tuscany. The group hit it off immediately. Things go so well, that an invitation is extended. When Bjorn and Luisa go to meet their new friends, they are in for a memorable trip. We talk about social conventions, the stupidity of horror movies, and when it is possible to relate to a psychopath.Dual is a science fiction thriller starring Karen Gillam that made its world premiere at Sundance. The movie is about a woman who has been diagnosed with an incurable and fatal disease. In order to alleviate some of the pain for those who hare close to her, she has a clone commissioned. When things suddenly change, her life goes into further disarray. The movie has a tone that is impossible to place and incredibly dry humor. The two of us also talk about the fascinating performance of Gillam and what seems to be intentionally shallow character development. We try to peel away the layers of one of Sundance's most nuanced releases. The show also includes an interview with the writer and director of Dual, Riley Stearns. He discusses his inspiration behind the movie, why there is so little violence in his inherently violent movie, and who would win in a duel to the death.Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. There is a lot going on in this episode. The hunt to replace Blake continues. Can this week's guest remedy the damaged caused by Pablo's audition last week? We also have a listener request from The Sun City Fright Fest: 2017's 'Terrified' from Argentina. Plus, a look at an inappropriate horror movie from the United Kingdom.Bruce Campbell is an undeniable horror icon. Hallmark Holiday movies have also left their own impression on cinema. What would happen if the two came together? We speak about the upcoming One Night in December which aims to answer those questions. Which one of us will have a full report ready for next week?Lair sounds familiar enough to be fun. A man slaughters his family and blames it on demonic possession. It seems like a pretty straightforward tale of what is and is not true. Instead, it becomes the wrong kind of creepy, never can figure out what kind of movie it wants to be, and prides itself on things it never really accomplishes. But is it worth seeing? Our listener request takes us to Argentina and a look at Terrified. This is another movie that seems to forgot about initial premise in lieu of a different story. We talk about how it is like an anthology, the American influence on it, and time jumps in narratives. Plus, its odd connection to Fear Street.Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Morbidly Beautiful is your one stop shop for all your horror needs. Welcome back Reel Friends! A bittersweet episode this week, as we are finishing our Spooky Month categories this week! We've had loads of fun getting these Halloween specials together for you, and your hosts hit it out of the park with this week's choice. Alex and Walker were given the category of Foreign Horror. This was a category made for our resident horror buff Alex, and he had quite the list for the two of them to choose from. Eventually the two landed on the 1999 Japanese film Audition. "This disturbing Japanese thriller follows Aoyama (Ryo Ishibashi), a widower who decides to start dating again. Aided by a film-producer friend (Jun Kunimura), Aoyama uses auditions for a fake production to function as a dating service. When Aoyama becomes intrigued by the withdrawn, gorgeous Asami (Eihi Shiina), they begin a relationship. However, he begins to realize that Asami isn't as reserved as she appears to be, leading to gradually increased tension and a harrowing climax." Want to know more? Happy one year anniversary to Minki and Tracy as cohosts of this podcast and Happy New Year to all you OFS listeners! Or as the French say it, "Bonne année!" Take a trip back into horror film history as the hosts talk about how the French were a little behind other countries' horror output up until French film director, actor, novelist and pornography filmmaker Jean Rollin released a plethora of exploitation vampire-based films in the 70's and early 80's. This poetic film about the love between two females — one alive and one living dead, recently brought back to life by chemical waste spilling near her tomb — is probably his most notable and as Minki and Tracy agree: a decently entertaining film, if you're not put off by the obligatory nudity. Check out the episode and feel free to email with suggestions for movies to review in 2018!
안녕하세요 ....That means Hello! And it also means, the hosts are talking about the best Korean horror film in the short list of Korean horror films that they've actually seen. Oh, and go listen to episode 1 where they talk about a good runner up in this category!

This is a pretty special episode. First, Tracy and Minki revel over the awesome fan videos that came in from the OFS tee-shirt contest (find them on our instagram and facebook feeds) and then Tracy gets stoked to talk about the first Lao female film director, Mattie Do, who just so happened to jump into the best genre of all...HORROR. This is her second film and the hosts enjoy retelling it, especially during Women In Horror Month. The movie separates itself from Japanese and Korean revenge horror, delivering a new angle to Asian ghost stories. Socioeconomic and cultural statements are made, giving us a little bit of insight into what its like in Laos, and you may be inspired to go play the lottery after watching it.
