In honor of the legendary Val Kilmer, who has passed away at the age of 65, we're sharing The B-Side's episode from 2022 discussing his career and most overlooked films. Subscribe to The B-Side: https://pod.link/520164968 See the original description below: Today, we discuss one of the most intriguing actors of his generation: Val Kilmer! To tackle such an enigma, we bring in the legendary Katie Walsh! A must-follow on Twitter, a co-host of the insatiably-entertaining Miami Nice Podcast, and an accomplished writer. The B-Sides featured today are: Kill Me Again, At First Sight, The Salton Sea, and Mindhunters. We discuss how Kilmer was a prodigy––the youngest student admitted into Juilliard's drama department––before his Broadway debut in the (ultimately) star-studded Slab Boys. There's talk of his well-documented penchant to be difficult on set, as well as those who defended him and his abilities. We confront Dan's deep admiration for the poorly-aged The Salton Sea, make brief mention of other B-Sides like Thunderheart, The Real McCoy, and Spartan, and reference both Kilmer's autobiography I'm Your Huckleberry and the 2021 documentary Val. Finally, we acknowledge that perhaps Val Kilmer was ultimately a movie star that never really wanted to be a movie star.
Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we talk about two legends: Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger! Our B-Sides include I Know Where I'm Going!, The Small Back Room, Gone to Earth, and The Elusive Pimpernel. Our guest is the legend Katie Walsh, podcaster and film critic at the Tribune News Service & LA Times. We talk about her lovely experiences watching Powell & Pressburger restoration prints on the big screen, the extent of moviegoing etiquette (put that phone down please!), and the Frank Marshall creature feature Arachnophobia. Also discussed is Powell's infamous (and masterful) opus Peeping Tom, the duo's later work (Oh... Rosalinda!!, The Battle of the River Plate), Powell's autobiography, and the career of Jennifer Jones. Be sure to give us a follow on social at @tfsbside.bsky.social.

Movie of the Year: 1984Amadeus (with Katie Walsh!)The Movie of the Year podcast recently turned its attention to the iconic film Amadeus, offering listeners an in-depth analysis of this classic through an engaging conversation with guest critic Katie Walsh. Amadeus, directed by Milos Forman, is not just a retelling of Mozart's life; it's a rich exploration of genius, jealousy, and the complexities of talent. In this episode, the hosts and Walsh delve into the film's themes, focusing on what it means to have talent, the unique approach Milos Forman took to the musician biopic, and the unforgettable performances by Tom Hulce and F. Murray Abraham.Exploring Amadeus: The Nature of TalentThe discussion begins with one of Amadeus's central themes: the nature of talent. The hosts and Walsh explore how the film juxtaposes the extraordinary, almost divine talent of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart with the more modest abilities of Antonio Salieri. The podcast highlights how Amadeus portrays talent as both a gift and a curse, examining Salieri's agony as he recognizes Mozart's genius, something he can admire but never replicate.Katie Walsh brings an insightful perspective on how the film's portrayal of talent transcends the musical realm and touches on broader human experiences. She notes that Amadeus raises questions about the fairness of life's gifts and the torment that can arise from recognizing one's limitations in the face of someone else's brilliance. The conversation underscores how Amadeus resonates with anyone who has ever felt overshadowed by a more gifted peer, making it a timeless study of human emotion and ambition.Milos Forman's Amadeus: A Revolutionary Musician BiopicMilos Forman's direction of Amadeus is another focal point of the episode. The podcast examines how Forman, already renowned for his work on One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, revolutionized the musician biopic genre with this film. Instead of crafting a straightforward biography, Forman created a lush, operatic drama that blends historical accuracy with artistic license, bringing Mozart's world to life in a way that feels both authentic and larger-than-life.The hosts and Walsh discuss how Forman's approach to Amadeus differs from other musician biopics, particularly focusing on the rivalry between Mozart and Salieri. The film does not merely celebrate Mozart's genius; it also delves into the darker aspects of his life and the intense envy it provokes in Salieri. This choice elevates Amadeus beyond a simple retelling of Mozart's life, making it a profound exploration of human nature, power, and legacy.Katie Walsh praises Forman for his ability to balance the film's grand, operatic scale with intimate character studies, allowing audiences to connect with both the historical figures and the universal themes they represent. She points out that Forman's direction ensures that Amadeus remains accessible and engaging, even for those who might not be familiar with classical music or Mozart's life.Tom Hulce and F. Murray Abraham in Amadeus: A Study in ContrastsNo discussion of Amadeus would be complete without acknowledging the outstanding performances of its lead actors, Tom Hulce and F. Murray Abraham. The podcast dedicates a significant portion of the episode to analyzing how these two actors brought Mozart and Salieri to life with such depth and nuance.Tom Hulce's portrayal of Mozart is described as both electrifying and tragic. The hosts and Walsh discuss how Hulce captures Mozart's childlike exuberance, as well as his...

So nice seeing so many of our folks at our regular Friday livestream, where we talked about the voice actors strike, who should play Tim Walz on "Saturday Night Live," Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan and more. We also have a couple of new movie reviews for you, starting with "It Ends With Us." Katie Walsh helps out on a discussion of this romantic drama starring Blake Lively as a woman who gets swept up in a passionate but abusive relationship. It's based on the Colleen Hoover bestseller, and it's in theaters now. Also, Alonso and Christy review "The Instigators," a mismatched buddy heist comedy starring Matt Damon and Casey Affleck. She's considered the Greatest of All Time: a gymnast so special that five of the most difficult skills are named after her. But Simone Biles stunned the world when she withdrew from the 2020 Olympics, citing a need to protect her mental health. But after a break from the sport, the champion returned to the gym and confronted her physical and emotional challenges. The Netflix documentary series Simone Biles: Rising follows the gymnast's journey from disappointment in Tokyo to her return to the Olympic stage in Paris. Well, we couldn't quite get it together to have fresh material for every day of the break. So for this Tuesday and Thursday, we bring you our regular guests on their regular days of the week, only this time, they're counterprogramming last week's Republican National Convention with our coverage of the last Democratic National Convention. From 2020! David Waldman is joined by Joan McCarter at KITM 2020 Democratic Convention World Headquarters to assist in blowing up virtual balloons, singing Springsteen and reviewing yesterday's opening night. Analysts and hecklers were sidelined, and no funny hats, but Michelle Obama spoke directly to me, and so far that makes it the best ever. Tonight: Chuck Schumer! ...Followed by John Kerry! Woohoo! And following them… a minute or so of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. (Probably in conjunction with her AMA on Instagram.) Donald Trump didn't like it. No one appreciates that Trump has done so much more for the crummy, horrible, dumb people in the United States. In fact, Donald could talk your ear off about how ungrateful the Blacks and the Jews are these days. Suburban housewives though, they can shut up. He's brought them a long way, baby. Trump will announce an executive order allowing Rosa Parks to sit anywhere on a bus in 1955. Also, it's now legal for Susan B. Anthony to vote in 1872. Anyhow, Michelle got Trump's COVID-19 death toll wrong. He's scored 30,000 more than she said, at least! Meanwhile, 71 of Mississippi's 82 counties are reporting coronavirus outbreaks on their first day of school. The jury's still out on whether Adrenochrome, harvested from the fear of children, has a beneficial use against COVID-19—“the jury” being bat-shit crazy Qanoners who are now stealing kids to get their own little taste. Speaking of evil, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy (not to be confused with non-evil short track Hall-of-Famer Don LaJoie) is destroying the Post Office to swing the election, and his stock portfolio. Susan Collins is concerned. Mitch McConnell is not concerned, yet. But Steny Hoyer and Nancy Pelosi are working to coax him out of his shell. Trump just might pardon Edward Snowden… and there's a senate report confirming Russia used Paul Manafort and WikiLeaks to sway the 2016 election. Remember emoluments? There are three pending cases on Trump's violation of the emoluments clause, and it looks as if they will be pending still on election day. Remember Miles Taylor? Donald Trump does not. Katie Walsh led talks to remove Trump from the 2016 ticket. You might remember her as an RNC superstar, and one of the only “pro”s to work at the Trump White House.

It's Die Hard in an epic crime saga! For this suitably epic episode, Phil and Liam are joined by special guest Katie Walsh - top Los Angeles film critic and co-host of the Michael Mann-themed podcast Miami Nice - to discuss the sprawling 1995 masterpiece Heat! When a team of elite professional thieves led by Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) pull off an audacious armored car robbery that leaves three guards dead, hard-charging Robbery-Homicide detective Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino) is assigned to the case. In the process of investigating and surveilling the culprits, Hanna comes to admire McCauley's tremendous skill and discipline, and even starts to identify with him personally, while still pursuing him and his crew relentlessly across LA. Phil, Liam and Katie discuss their respective relationships with the movie over time, and debate whether it deserves to be considered one of the greatest films ever made. They explore its surprisingly high amount of ‘Die Hard DNA', before delving deep into Heat's storied production history, a section that also includes a detailed sidebar on Mann's 1989 TV movie LA Takedown, which became the blueprint for the final film. As always, they analyze the ‘hero' and ‘villain' of the piece, unpacking what makes these two iconic central characters so compelling, unique and enduring, and they also discuss the ladies of Heat (such as Ashley Judd, Diane Venora, Amy Brenneman, Natalie Portman and Kim Staunton) and their respective roles in the tapestry of this complex and multi-faceted story. They parse through the various spectacular action set-pieces in the film, debate whether Heat would meet the definition to be considered an action movie, and talk about what Henry Rollins looks like in shorts (Google it). After a trip to the ‘Die Hard Oscars' to hand out some action movie awards, events culminate with a suitably intense showdown between Liam and Katie during the Double Jeopardy trivia quiz!HEAT trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpAhjOvQVj0At the time of release, HEAT is streaming on Hulu in the US and on Netflix in the UK and is available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video, Apple/iTunes, YouTube, Vudu and all the usual platforms! Surely, if anyone can save us from rampaging megalodons, it's Jason Statham on a Jet-Ski. At least that's the point of "Meg 2: The Trench," which takes way too long to get going. We have a review of this surprisingly dull late-summer sequel on Breakfast All Day. We also review the indie rom-com "Shortcomings," Randall Park's feature directorial debut, starring Justin H. Min, Sherry Cola and Ally Maki. Plus the always brilliant Katie Walsh helps out with a catch-up review of the Australian horror movie "Talk to Me." In news, we have a bunch of corrections -- sometimes, we get things wrong! --plus Pedro Almodovar and Weird Barbie. And for our Patreon subscribers, we recap the first two episodes of "Heartstopper" season 2 on Netflix, which is as charming as ever. Come on in, the water's fine!

We've got a super early review of "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" on Breakfast All Day. And it's spoiler-free, because the movie doesn't even come out until May 5. But we wanted to chat about the latest in the MCU -- writer-director James Gunn's final film for Marvel before he heads to DC Studios -- as soon as we could. Stay tuned for details on a live spoiler chat coming soon. Also, Katie Walsh helps out with a review of "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret.," based on the beloved Judy Blume coming-of-age novel.
