Welcome to episode 144 [originally broadcast on Wednesday 29 November 2023] of #mhTV​​​​​​​​. This week Nicky Lambert and David Munday spoke with guests Pete Carruthers, Dr Anne Felton & Prof Mick McKeown about Empathy machines - Using theatres to support learning in Mental Health. PC: Pete Carruthers is the founder and artistic director of tree fish productions. He has worked as a writer, director, actor and producer for 15 years, working on a wide range of theatre and film projects. He is also undertaking a PhD at UCLan's School of Nursing and Midwifery. His thesis title is ‘Empathy Machines: Using theatre and film in the training of compassionate and reflective health professionals.' Pete's play, ‘The Possibility of Colour', has been created over 15 years with input from mental health professionals, academics, students and experts by experience. Thanks to funding from UCLan and Health Education England, 1,350 student nurses were given the opportunity to watch the play and take part in post-show discussions during the first touring production of the play in November and December 2022. Attending these events counted as official practice hours towards their nurse training. A national tour is planned for 2025. Pete is now co-developing a one-week theatre and film based simulated practice learning experience for student nurses, with support from NHS England and several universities. Pete has also written, produced and directed award-winning short films that have been used globally to raise awareness and understanding of mental health and neurodiversity. One film, ‘Fallout' has been used to raise awareness and train staff in 9 different countries across 5 continents and was described by Sir Patrick Stewart as ‘extremely powerful'. AF: Dr Anne Felton is the Head of the Institute of Health and Allied Professions at Nottingham Trent University, UK. Anne is a registered mental health nurse and began her nursing career promoting recovery approaches for people with long term mental health problems in the community. She has extensive experience within healthcare education, promoting student centred approaches to learning and curriculum design. Anne published widely on mental health nursing, risk, therapeutic risk taking alongside simulation and mental health nurse education. She has an interest in student mental well- being alongside the participation of people with lived experience in health education. MM: Mick McKeown is Professor of Democratic Mental Health in the School of Nursing at UCLan. He has consistently supported public engagement initiatives, largely in the field of health and social care. He initiated and developed the Comensus service user and carer involvement project at the University of Central Lancashire and supports public engagement in North West Coastal ARC mental health activities. Mick is a board member of the Preston Cooperative Development Network and active within the Preston Model for community wealth building. Mick has been a keen supporter of The Possibility of Colour for several years and is also the lead supervisor for Pete Carruthers' PhD study, 'Empathy Machines: Using theatre and film in the training of compassionate and reflective health professionals.' From Bristol Transformed 2020: Martin Parker, Malu garcia, Anita Mangan, Jules Peck, Neil McInroy After the 2019 election many of us were left wondering - where do we go from here? We may have lost the battle but the war isn’t over. We have a network of activist ready and rearing to go. What better way to channel that energy than into community wealth building projects? But what is community wealth building (CWB)? It's predicated on the idea that the best way to reduce excessive wealth inequality, and promote universal prosperity, is to build a system where people share in the wealth they collectively produce. This is achieved by promoting cooperative businesses, community land trusts, housing co-ops and other such initiatives. In short – CWB aims to transition towards a cooperative economy from the bottom up! Sound good? In this panel we discuss the successes of previous CWB projects, such as The Preston Model, and how we can replicate it here in Bristol.

Councillor Matthew Brown is Leader of Preston City Council in the north of England, where he has been widely credited as the driving force behind the ‘Preston model', an economic strategy at the city and county level that presents a comprehensive, interlinked approach to community wealth building as a practical and transformative alternative to austerity and disinvestment. First elected to represent the Tulketh ward in 2002, Councillor Matthew Brown subsequently took on portfolios that included community engagement and inclusion, social justice and policy initiatives, leading to his election in 2018 as Council Leader, and to a position as an advisor to the Labour Party's Community Wealth Building Unit.  Matthew also works as Senior Fellow for the promotion of Community Wealth Building in the U.K. with The Democracy Collaborative.”

Leader of Preston City Council, Matthew Brown, unpacks for us how 'The Preston Model' developed as an alternative to austerity, with incredible success, as anchor institutions pulled together to build a kinder economy. This model, continues to gain much international recognition, and is being adopted by cities across the world, who want to tackle inequality and take climate change seriously.

Lesley has just submitted her, nine years in the making, PhD thesis on the Norwegian and Scottish hutting movements. She reflects on what these two very different experiences can tell us about the economics of power lying beneath the surface of UK democracy. The scholar Richard Sennett once wrote, “modern capitalism works by colonizing people’s imagination of what is possible”. If it is the case that our current economic model thrives by creating the conditions that suppress rather than unleash the imagination, and if we recognise that now, more than any other time, we need a mass re-nourishing of the collective imagination, then where might we spot examples of 'the economics of the imagination'? Eight years ago, the economy of Preston was crocked. Then its Council decided to take a new approach. Today I'm speaking to Cllr Matthew Brown, the recently-elected leader of Preston City Council. What Preston have achieved should be a model for everywhere else. "Let’s have a bit of imagination about how to get out of this mess" he tells me. I last interviewed him in June 2015, so I started by asking him, when we spoke just before Christmas, what has changed since then?

Matthew Brown has played a leading role in Preston City Council's work to maximise the benefits of public and quasi-public spending in the city. Changes to the culture of procurement in the city is having important redistributive effects and helping to foster a stronger co-operative sector.
