The case of Christiana Edmunds has been debated since 1871. Christiana became known as 'The Chocolate Cream Killer' after lacing chocolate creams with strychnine. Some believe that she simply went mad and began poisoning the people of Brighton, England, at random. Others believe that this dirtbag was a woman scorned. After she failed at murdering her 'lover's' wife, Christiana attempted to pin the poisoning on local confectioner, John Maynard. Either way, this woman was not nearly as 'sweet' as she wanted others to think that she was. NZ Post is copping criticism over its failure to remove Hawke's Bay post-boxes that have been sitting dormant for months. New reports claim six NZ Post boxes across Hastings and Havelock North that were slated for removal are still being used by the public due to a lack of sign-postings. Hawke's Bay Today also spoke to one woman who had completed a free bowel screening test - only to realise it hadn't been sent two weeks later. Postal Workers Union co-president John Maynard says NZ Post should have consulted the public before shutting down the boxes. "Our position is - if people are using those boxes, the company should not be taking them out. This is a publicly-owned institution and if they want to move boxes or take them out, the very least they should do is consult with the local community." Released in 1984, Vigil was a watershed moment for the New Zealand film industry. It was the feature directorial debut of Vincent Ward and the first Kiwi film to screen in-competition at the Cannes Film Festival. 40 years on the film will be celebrated with screenings at Wellington's Embassy Theatre and The Hollywood in Auckland. Vincent Ward will be at the Wellington screening for a Q&A, joined remotely by the film's producer John Maynard and its star, Fiona Kay. Fiona is with Jesse today to discuss the film's legacy.

Is your city climate ready? Is your government or council taking the appropriate action to adapt for the climate that is coming? As we watch the disasters unfold around the world, we know that far too many governing bodies are on the back foot when it comes to adaptation, and in poorer countries, it is even more challenging to prepare as the funding just isn't there. When it comes to preparing our cities, what should our leaders be doing today to ensure we are ready for the climate we have coming, and what is already happening around the world? More importantly, what's not happening fast enough, which cities are leading the charge, and what cities are most at risk? There is so much to discuss around this topic, including preparing for climate refugees, investing in critical infrastructure like climate-ready dams, roads, bridges, all the way through to adequate mental health support services and resilient healthcare infrastructure, so it's a lot to discuss, but we'll work hard to get to the bottom of it. To understand more, we are delighted to welcome John Maynard, a consultant and expert in safer towns and cities, who started his own consultancy after decades working for local councils in Australia. His focus today is crime prevention and community safety focusing on the planning, design, management and maintenance of the Safe City. John is an expert in the application of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles and the relationship between human behaviour and the way we plan and design public and private spaces. He is also finishing a book on this wide-ranging area. This is going to be a compelling overview of how our cities function and plan for the future, so please do join us Friday, 25th October – 6pm AU EST, 3pm Singapore time, and 8am UK time. Climate Courage is a livestream, held every two weeks and is co-hosted by Andrea T Edwards, Dr. David Ko and Richard Busellato. On the show, we cover critical topics across the full spectrum of the polycrisis, in everyday language, and we go big picture on the climate crisis, while also drilling down and focusing on the actions we can all take to be part of the solution. Whether individual action, community action, or national/global action - every single one of us can be part of ensuring a live-able future for our children and grandchildren. A controversial anti-council leaflet has ruffled feathers in the capital. A group called Better Wellington produced the flyer criticising council plans, like changing noise control to let mosques play their call to prayer. But posties are calling it harmful misinformation and have refused to deliver it. John Maynard from the Postal Workers Union says the leaflets are written in a misleading way. "Anyone who reads that thinks - oh, we're going to have a call to prayer every morning. I've asked people to read it, that's what they think it means." Better Wellington spokesperson Alistair Boyce has stepped up to defend the flyer. He maintains it wasn't intended to be provocative. "No, what we've done is highlighted the ideological nature of this council." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

John Maynard appears to be the perfect combination of ultra experience and positive mindset. On the running side, he figured out pretty early on that he was built for endurance, covering 18 miles in the 5th grade to win a season pass to Great America. And he has continued to develop that endurance to the point that he just toed the starting line of the Angeles Crest 100, which was his 3rd 100 mile event in the last 10 months. And we are just as excited to dive into mindset with this guy because he comes across as one of the most positive, encouraging individuals that we have connected with in the space. So stick around to hear how he got into ultra, the powerful rules that he lives by, and all the juicy, painful details of his recent ultra experiences. Enjoy the episode! Posties will be no more in four to six years, as NZ Post announces significant change to their delivery service. It's confirmed both mail and parcels will eventually be delivered by courier drivers, meaning up to 750 people will lose their jobs in mail delivery, processing and support roles. Postal Workers Union spokesperson John Maynard says it's clear New Zealand Post hasn't been fighting for new solutions to the changing world. Was trägt die deutsche Volleyballnationalmannschaft? New Zealand Post plans to lay off 700 postal staff in the next five years, in favour of using contractors in vans. Postal Workers Union Co-National President John Maynard tells Mike Hosking contractors don't have the same employment rights and employers will use contractors to avoid paying benefits such as annual holidays. The union believes a suitable alternative to the cuts is to maintain postal delivery on footpaths with smaller numbers. The union believe this plan is a more efficient proposition to continue delivering letters than what NZ Post are currently planning. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Warnings New Zealand still needs a strong mailing system. NZ Post is proposing cutting 750 jobs over the next five years, from its workforce of 4500. It expects volumes of post to almost halve by 2028. Postal Workers Union National President John Maynard says physical mail is alive and well in rural areas. Les, Kurt, and Jason may (or may not) have survived the Fourth of July, but the jury is still out whether they survived this week's Lifetime movie “Jailbreak Lovers.” But first, Kurt shares the incredibly riveting news that Blac Chyna Drinks 2 cups of coffee a day! Listener Lisa contacted us to let us know she enjoyed our banter about notaries, and Les' sister Anita contacted Les to thank Kurt and Jason for saving Les' life! Then, the guys don't beat around the bush (though someone should) when it comes to this ripped-from-the-headlines (and Dateline NBC) movie about Toby Dorr and John Maynard. The guys think Catherine Bell is far too attractive to be the dupe in this particular set of circumstances. That could have been fixed by some haircuts and dye rather than a sketch comedy old person wig that doesn't get used. Ironically, it's not the old person wig that has Les thinking one of the characters looks like George Washington (not Thomas Edison… and definitely Ben Franklin, oops). A good disguise also didn't stop these characters from being genuine morons (as was the case in the real life story as well). But, honestly, anyone could break out of a prison that disciplines inmates with the honor system. We here locally recall the story of Toby Dorr, the woman who helped convicted murderer John Maynard escape from Lansing in a dog crate…which is why the recent story of Vicky White, helping convicted murderer Casey White escape form an Alabama prison late last week was of great interest to us! First, we talked to a listener who knew John Maynard…but then we had the chance to talk to former FBI special agent Chris Swecker about this most recent case, and he gave us a lot of amazing insight into what is one of the biggest manhunts in the country right now!!

Armageddon, Halloween, Halloween Kills, Remember The Titans, Gone In 60 Seconds…not to mention his work on the hugely popular series, Yellowstone. And now he's one of the stars of the most bizarre shows on TV right now, the Amazon Prime series, Outer Range…and we got real deep talking with him this all about it this morning!!!

The notion of reconciliation has been discussed in Australian politics for forty years, but are we any closer to achieving a meaningful reconciliation with First Nations people in Australia? How can we possibly move forward if we don't reconcile with our past?

The role of Latin in Britain's eighteenth-century Caribbean colonies was multifaceted. The ability to speak the language was a status symbol for the colonial elite, and Latin texts often served as attempted validations of the colonial project; for example, John Maynard wrote a lengthy Latin poem aiming to justify the slave trade in Barbados. But there was also the Jamaican poet Francis Williams, who achieved international fame as a writer of Latin verse and used his work to defend his right to be taken seriously as a Black poet. In this week's episode, Dr John Gilmore of the University of Warwick speaks to Shivaike Shah about the light Francis Williams's one surviving poem sheds on the lesser-known functions of Latin in the British colonies. He shares how Latin poetry became a conduit for arguments about the intellectual capacity of people of African descent and, by extension, about the illegitimacy of the slave trade. To find out more about this topic, check out the reading list on our website: www.khameleonproductions.org/khameleon-classics/latin-poetry-in-the-caribbean
Seid gespannt, was als nächstes kommt.

A Very Square Peg: The Strange and Remarkable Life the Polymath Robert Eisler
Warning: Economics. In this episode, we begin with Eisler's testimony before the skeptical Senators of the Committee on Banking and Currency in Washington, D.C. on January 20, 1934, in which he proposed that the nation adopt a dual currency system to control inflation and end the Great Depression. I (a non-economist) talk about what this means with noted economist Miles Kimball, who has recently brought renewed attention to Eisler's plan in his own work. We also learn about Eisler's theory of who actually wrote what we call the Gospel of John, talk with Steven Wasserstrom about Eisler's brief involvement with Carl Jung and the Eranos Conference, and interpret a “dream poem” that Eisler recorded at his mother's house in 1936.
