On class formation, fragmentation, pessimism and optimism. George and contributing editor Leigh Phillips talk to Dan Evans, a writer and academic based in South Wales. We discuss his piece in the New Socialist, ‘Is the Working Class Back?' and themes emerging from it. How important are definitions of class? If the working class remains weak and fragmented, and its politics increasingly chaotic, what is to be done? How does Gabriel Winant's pessimism about the industrial working class compare to Evans'? What are the class contradictions of the contemporary Left? Who is the real oppositional class today? Should we be more positive about the petite bourgeoisie? How did the 70s energy crisis, neoliberal economics, and environmentalism create a perfect storm that broke up regulated utilities? How does the regulatory regime on energy in the US actually work? Literatur: Aaron Bastani: Fully Automated Luxury Communism. A Manifesto, Verso. How do we move from a strategy of 'blocking' (preventing new infrastructure) to one of 'building'? Leigh Phillips is a researcher of the supernatural who makes his home in Brisbane, Australia. When Leigh was a small boy, he had a supernatural encounter with his grandfather, who had passed away, which was what sparked his interest in the paranormal for the first time. While he was staying at his grandmother's house, he received a visitation from his grandfather's spirit, who asked him how he was doing and if he required a drink. When his parents got home, Leigh asked them who had stopped by to see him, which caused them to glance at each other in a perplexed manner. Due to the fact that there was no one else there in the house other from an older brother and a grandmother. His father had asked him to describe the man, and in response, he had shown his son a photograph of his grandfather that had been kept in a secret location. This was the beginning of a search that would last a lifetime to find answers to questions regarding the supernatural. Leigh is about to release a film called “The House of Lost Souls” based on a residential property in Australia and how it affected the family. With deindustrialisation, energy rationing and severe pressure on standards of living, it looks increasingly like degrowth is official policy. Yet its advocates, drawing from the work of radicals like Mike Davis, John Bellamy Foster, Jason Hickel, and Kohei Saito, would argue that ecological Marxism or degrowth communism is wholly different from stagnant capitalism. NextDay is the leading provider of all-natural productivity and recovery products. NextDay was built to help address the core issues of hangover so customers enjoy long nights out and still get things done the next day. NextDay is available in stores across the DC-metropolitan area and available online for shipping nationwide. Would there have been climate change under socialism?

The idea that, without capitalism, the planet might not be facing so great a climate crisis is well established, appearing in works like Naomi Klein's bestselling This Changes Everything (2014) and from the growing ranks of “eco-socialist” activists. But in this essay, the science writer (and committed socialist) Leigh Phillips argues that an entirely socialist 20th century would have resulted in global heating at least as bad, if not worse. He outlines a counterfactual history in which capitalism is vanquished everywhere by 1930, colonialism willingly unravelled – and industrialisation rolled out for everyone, not for the few. “Housing for all, electricity for all, fast and comfortable transport for all, and yes, even delightful plastic consumer tchotchkes for all,” he writes. “There would absolutely be a People's Xbox under socialism.” In this clearly argued and imaginative essay, Phillips concedes that, yes, there would have been differences under socialism – and some benefits, once the harms of carbon emissions were realised. But we must start to see the climate crisis as the unintended consequence of largely beneficial (if uneven) economic development – and a problem that is very hard to solve under any single system. What is needed, he says, is not a move towards degrowth, anti-consumerism and other forms of eco-austerity – but a greater role for economic planning.Written by Leigh Phillips and read by Hugh Smiley. This article was originally published on the newstatesman.com on 10 August 2022.

¿A quién pretende desactivar?
