In the winter of 1817, a caravan of half-starved Swabians crossed through miles of frozen forests to find their promised land: Ohio. In accordance with their egalitarian ethos and inspired by apocalyptic prophecy, these men and women rejected private ownership and held all things in common. This radical commune, which they called Zoar, would be the most successful intentional community in American history and one of the most enduring socialist experiments, lasting several years longer than even the Soviet Union.Gladio Free Europe's Ohio correspondent Jern (@realJernfer) returns for another stirring story of the Buckeye state. Founded by Pietist refugees from the German state of Wurttemberg, Zoar put into practice the same kinds of radical ideas discussed previously among the Anabaptists, Quakers, and Shakers. Unlike most other communes, including Robert Owen's enlightenment dream of New Harmony, Zoar was stable and prosperous. Succeeding where so many others failed, the commune held together across multiple generations and even developed an early industrial economy. It attracted the envy and admiration of many other communities, including the controversial free-love society of Oneida.Zoar saw itself as a refugee from the sinful and venal world outside, taking its name from the town that sheltered the Biblical Lot after the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. Yet the community's influence over Ohio trade and finance meant the outside world could not be kept away. Ultimately, Zoar would be a victim of its own success, as its wealthy residents decided to dissolve the commune and divvy up their belongings into private hands. Despite ultimately failing in its mission to secede from the world of material things, Zoar is an inspiring story of what it looks like to build the New Moral World. And although its founders were sectarian socialists from the Holy Roman Empire, who spoke little English and had even less interest in the broader national project, the undaunted ambition of Zoar makes this small commune a quintessential chapter of American history.

King James Bible, Acts 2:44"And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also." King James Bible, Acts 17:6Liam and Russian Sam are joined by once again by Jackson (@GraceCathedralPark) for a two thousand summary of American radicalism and the utopian tradition. Since ancient times, religious and moral conviction has compelled the most pious among us to leave this sinful world behind.Jewish groups like the Essenes and the Ebionites were joned by the earliest Christian monks in their complete rejection of secular society, preferring to live in intentional communities organized toward complete observance of religious commandments. These groups, who may have included the first followers of Jesus, held their property in common and believed they could lead mankind by their example toward a new moral world.By the European Middle Ages, Christian institutions had taken on all the venal and violent obligations of the state. Reformers seeking to challenge the worldly power of the church were met by centuries of brutal oppression. By the 16th century these contradictions had become too much to bear, with the eruption of the Protestant Reformation and the flowering of idealistic sectarians. Some of these groups, like the Anabaptists and the Diggers, sought to upend the material hierarchies of man and make all equal before God. When these groups were also hunted down, even by their fellow Protestants, the dream of a new beginning survived across the sea.Religious settlers like the Puritans and Quakers saw the wild American lands as a blank slate for their moral dreams, while more materialistic colonists used the New World to engineer new systems of extraction and domination unimaginable back home. Many of these groups created communes in the wilderness, some surviving for months and others for centuries. As Enlightenment writers argued for the equality of man based on reason rather than scripture, and the American and French Revolutions called all political secular communitarian projects also began to emerge. Most significant of all of these was New Harmony, the utopian experiment of reformed capitalist and lifelong idealist Robert Owen. Though New Harmony would not be a particularly long-lived commune, it cemented Owen as one of the most famous men of the early 19th century and a father of the socialist movement. Like many parents, Owen would see some of his children turn away from him, yet his lifelong agitation would lay the groundwork for more enduring transformative projects. While we now understand the utopian movement to have failed, Owen and his two thousands years of forebears succeeded in inspiring mankind to build a new moral world.Listen to the end of this one to hear about Jackson's own radical utopian dream: BYU for Owenism.

Neoborn Caveman rips into the industrial sleep scam, exposing the "8-hour sleep" myth as a factory-optimized con. Listen as your favorite unfiltered host traces our unnatural sleep patterns back to Welsh industrialist Robert Owen's 8-8-8 rule - not science, but capitalist efficiency. NC reveals how pre-industrial humans embraced biphasic sleep with wakeful periods between (and no, not just for sex, you perverts), while today's sleep-deprived zombies fuel a trillion-dollar industry of pills, energy drinks, and mindfulness apps. From the "sickening industry" to the "soul-sucking industry," this caffeinated rant connects our rigid 9-5 treadmill to rising disease rates, burned-out workers, and the death of human vitality. Discover why your inability to put down your screen is exactly what the system wants, and why biphasic sleep might be your first step toward breaking free from the modern sleep trap.Stay tuned for Part 2, where NC goes even deeper with solutions and talks about how modern neofeudalism keeps us exhausted, compliant, and paying tribute to our digital overlords............. 'Eight hours labor, eight hours recreation, eight hours rest' was the rallying cry of Robert Owen, a Welsh textile manufacturer turned labour reformer in the early 19th century. For those toiling in factories, Owen's slogan was a socialist dream that only became commonplace in the early 20th century. But, the 9 to 5 is still standard while technology has moved on - we have Artificial intelligence, automation, intuitive software at our fingertips. Shouldn't we be more productive while spending fewer hours at work? To give us an insight into alternative models of working is Professor Brendan Burchell, a professor at the Faculty of Human, Social and Political science at the University of Cambridge and fellow of Magdalene College, Cambridge who has been focusing on the effects of a 4 day working week for employers and employees. And also joining us is Professor Clare Kelliher from the Cranfield School of Management who has been spearheading research into flexible working. Born in Virginia and raised by his mother in the Cherokee Nation, Robert Owen was a seminal figure in Oklahoma's early history. He was elected as one of Oklahoma's first U.S. senators in 1907 where he championed progressive and populist causes in the nation's capital. Utilizing his background as a bank owner in Muskogee, he was the Senate author of the Federal Reserve Act of 1913, which created the financial system still in use today. In this episode, Trait Thompson and Dr. Blackburn talk to Dr. Ken Brown, a former professor at the University of Central Oklahoma and an expert on Owen, about his life and his work creating the Federal Reserve.
Avsnitt 376 spelades in 2021. Today we visit with film editor and author Lisa Cheek, about the her book, SIT, CINDERELLA, SIT: A Mostly True MemoirWhen Film Editor Lisa Cheek was abruptly fired from doing the work she loved, cutting television commercials. Two days later she got a call at 2:45am – from cinematographer and director Robert Owen who knew and valued her work. That call brought Lisa into the director's vision of filming the original story of Cinderella, written in China in 768 AD, in China. But Lisa had to say yes, now, and be on location to hit the ground running in just several weeks. Thinking back to when she first saw Cinderella at the age of five, etched into her memory as, “the most magical story”, she couldn't say no. Reality soon hit, however, when Lisa realized the film would be told entirely in Mandarin – a language she didn't speak.SIT, CINDERELLA, SIT is available now! https://amzn.to/428dG2wLearn more about our radio program, podcast & blog at www.JohnAndHeidiShow.com

Alex Newman, with his sharp insights and vast knowledge, joins us to uncover the layers of communist infiltration in American society. Known for his impactful interviews during the early days of COVID-19, Alex discusses his involvement in the eye-opening film "Beneath Sheep's Clothing." This movie draws uncanny parallels between historic Soviet tactics and current U.S. government trends, serving as a crucial tool for raising awareness about these covert threats. Our conversation takes a historical turn as we track the roots of communist influence in American education. Together with Dr. Samuel Blumenfeld, Alex has co-authored a book exploring the foundational role education plays in shaping societal values. We examine figures like Robert Owen, whose push for government-controlled education laid the groundwork for collectivist ideologies that continue to influence today's educational challenges. The episode also grapples with the complexities of the U.S. education system and the potential risks of government funding in homeschooling. We weigh the consequences of initiatives like Common Core and emphasize the urgency of choosing educational alternatives like homeschooling or private schooling. By taking cues from countries like Germany and Sweden, and discussing Arizona's bold school choice initiative, we highlight the importance of safeguarding educational freedoms. Tune in to understand the stakes and engage with "Beneath Sheep's Clothing" as an essential resource for defending our values and freedoms.

// Literatur - Geoffrey D. The top-secret Dambusters mission was one so crucial that British intelligence hoped it would hasten a triumph over Nazi Germany. But it was also highly dangerous, and required the 133 pilots to fly at high speed and exceptionally low altitudes, all in the dead of night. With only one bomb per plane, they had one shot at changing the course of the war. So why did Britain feel the time was right to bomb Germany in such an audacious way? How effective was this campaign in bringing the war to a close? And how did the daring raid impact the lives of British people? This is a Short History Of… The Dambusters. A Noiser production, written by Fiona Ford. With thanks to Dr Robert Owen, the official historian of the No.617 Squadron Association, and lead author of ‘Dam busters: Failed to Return.' If you want to insult somebody in Silicon Valley, call them a “utopian”. It suggests a fantastical mind unable or unwilling to come to terms with reality. Utopians, it is assumed by self styled “realists”, are children. They've failed to grow up. But according to That Was The Week tech newsletter Keith Teare, the problem with today's Silicon Valley is the scarcity rather than abundance of utopian thinking. Borrowing from an essay entitled Whither Utopia by the British technologist Rohit Krishnan, Teare argues that we need a new generation of Robert Owen style utopians for our age of AI, technological visionaries with the audacity to think big and dig deep to confront our most persistent problems. Keith Teare is the founder and CEO of SignalRank Corporation. Previously, he was executive chairman at Accelerated Digital Ventures Ltd., a U.K.-based global investment company focused on startups at all stages. Teare studied at the University of Kent and is the author of “The Easy Net Book” and “Under Siege.” He writes regularly for TechCrunch and publishes the “That Was The Week” newsletter.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. We have the third installment in our socialism series, where we resume our journey beginning in 1825 and the collapse of Robert Owen's New Harmony experiment. This next chapter introduces the work of John Stuart Mill and Karl Marx and touches on Mikhail Bakunin and Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, both of whom we'll explore more fully in Part Four. Not gonna lie, this series may never end. But this is a critical piece of the puzzle that we're calling the “Critique Period,” lasting from 1825 to around 1870. This era is punctuated by widespread revolts in 1848 that inform some of the new thinking around capitalism and the plight of the working class—all leading into the explosion of socialist philosophy that hits the mainstream consciousness following the events of 1870 (again, for Part Four). Believe it or not, we're still not up to Karl Marx because we're mired in the turn of the 19th Century. Part Two reveals the progenitors of socialist theory toward the end of the Enlightenment era. Charles Fourier, Henri de Saint-Simon and Robert Owen lay the groundwork coming out of the American and French revolutions by imagining new societies and mechanisms of power. In their writings we begin to see the roots of Marxian philosophy and draw upon concepts and experiments that would influence Marx and others during the second industrial revolution. Alex Newman joins Zan for this compelling conversation as they discuss the spiritual crisis in education and the hope of homeschooling. Our Christian heritage as a nation includes Founding Fathers like Noah Webster, who wrote curriculum on all subjects from a biblical basis. That heritage was eroded by men like Robert Owen, Horace Mann, and John Dewey, who believed government-run schools should be secular in nature. Tune in to this episode for a thought-provoking discussion on the importance of prioritizing faith in education. Dr Robert Owen goes deep into his life and works with Carey Davis-Munro as they share some beautifully intimate moments together on this episode of the Soulhubber's Podcast. From a stranded boat in France, to being labelled ‘rotten to the core' it's a life of curiosity and experience. He's extremely passionate about many things in life, from people and planet to Intelligent Ageing, giving back, growing and empathy. From starting one of the first organic shops in London, writing books, a moderator, creating CPD couples workshops for the Princes Trust, a Trustee for Space2Grieve and a relationship counsellor, his life is certainly full. They re-visit some childhood memories which have driven him to a place of caring for others, and an early marriage breakdown, swiftly followed by some Jungian Therapy, all set him on the path to become, not a Priest, but a Psychotherapist. We don't want to spoilt the surprise, but enjoy his humour, tales, wit and wisdom and take a listen. To find out more about Dr Robert, either working with him as a couple, finding out more about Intelligent Ageing, or on the Soulhub website. Socialism - Utopian and Scientific by Friedrich Engels audiobook. The main idea of "Socialism: Utopian and Scientific" (1880) was distinguishing scientific socialism and utopian socialism. Engels begins by chronicaling the thought of utopian socialists, starting with Saint-Simon. He then proceeds to Fourier and Robert Owen. In chapter two, he summarizes dialectics, and then chronicles the thought from the ancient Greeks to Hegel. Chapter three summarizes dialectics in relation to economic and social struggles, essentially echoing the words of Marx.
Most men live an average or below-average life. What does it take to live above average? You will love this episode with Robert Owen! Robert Hamilton Owens is a man of many hats. He's been and done a lot – mountain climbing, radio and TV personality, keynote speaker, minister, Ironman, philanthropist, triathlete, Special Ops Pararescue man, and father of five – to name a few. But of all the pursuits he's undertaken, there's one title that best describes this literal force of nature: Robert is The Fittest and Mentally Toughest 66-Year-Old in the World. Period. Robert was born and raised in Orange County, California without ever having met his parents. Adopted by a California judge, Robert was raised as a special-needs child who was unable to play kickball with his classmate due to the corrective shoes he was required to wear through sixth grade.
