Sarah Hardwick, an entrepreneur and expert in equity crowdfunding, is at the forefront of this movement, leveraging her expertise to make investing more accessible to all.Sarah understands firsthand the challenges entrepreneurs face in securing funding. “Traditional fundraising methods often exclude a vast majority of small business owners,” she said. “Equity crowdfunding provides a way for everyday investors to support businesses they believe in while giving founders a viable alternative to venture capital.”Through her work with The Crowd, Sarah helps businesses navigate the complexities of launching successful crowdfunding campaigns. She emphasizes that equity crowdfunding is not just about raising money—it's about building a community of engaged supporters who become brand ambassadors. “When people invest, they feel a sense of ownership. They want to see the business succeed, and they help spread the word,” she explained.Sarah highlighted the importance of transparency and storytelling in crowdfunding. A compelling narrative can make the difference between a successful campaign and one that struggles to gain traction. “Investors connect with authenticity. They want to know who they're backing, why the business matters, and how it will make an impact,” she said. The Crowd itself is leveraging equity crowdfunding to fuel its own growth, showcasing the model's effectiveness. By raising capital from the public, the company practices what it preaches, proving that this funding method can drive meaningful expansion. As more entrepreneurs turn to equity crowdfunding, Sarah believes the financial world is moving toward greater inclusivity. “This is about democratizing investment. It's about allowing more people to participate in wealth creation, not just the elite few,” she said. For founders considering this route, Sarah offers clear advice: Be prepared, be transparent, and engage with your audience. With the right approach, equity crowdfunding can be a powerful tool for growth and impact.tl;dr:Sarah Hardwick shares insights on how equity crowdfunding is transforming access to capital for entrepreneurs. The conversation highlights the importance of transparency and storytelling in building successful crowdfunding campaigns.Sarah explains how The Crowd is leveraging equity crowdfunding to grow and empower other businesses. She reveals her superpower, visionary storytelling, and how it helps businesses connect with investors.Practical advice is shared on crafting compelling narratives to engage investors and build community support. How to Develop Visionary Storytelling As a SuperpowerSarah Hardwick's superpower is visionary storytelling. She has a unique ability to craft compelling narratives that resonate with investors, turning ideas into movements and businesses into community-driven ventures.“A great story isn't just about facts—it's about connection,” Sarah said. “Investors want to know the people behind the company, what drives them, and how their investment can make a difference.” Through her expertise in equity crowdfunding, she has demonstrated how storytelling transforms a fundraising campaign into a movement, making investors feel like they are part of something bigger. One striking example of Sarah's storytelling superpower in action was a campaign she helped structure for a mission-driven startup. The founder had an inspiring backstory but struggled to articulate it in a way that engaged potential investors. Sarah worked closely with them to refine their message, focusing on their journey, their impact, and their vision for the future. With a compelling narrative in place, the campaign exceeded its fundraising goals, proving the power of authentic storytelling. For those looking to develop visionary storytelling as a skill, Sarah offers the following actionable tips:Define your “why” clearly—investors want to understand your deeper purpose.Be authentic—genuine passion and honesty build trust with potential supporters.Keep it simple—clarity and focus make your story easier to remember and share.Use multimedia—videos, images, and testimonials enhance the emotional connection.Engage consistently—interact with your audience and keep them updated throughout your journey.By following Sarah's example and advice, you can make visionary storytelling a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. Why "Brain Rot" Could Democratize the Cognitive Health Category

the Joshua Schall Audio Experience

What does a term initially used 170 years ago in one of the most influential and compelling books in American literature have to do with the cognitive health category? And what was the term that Henry David Thoreau used his 1854 non-fiction book Walden to criticize society's tendency to devalue complex ideas in favor of simple ones…seeing this as indicative of a general decline in mental and intellectual effort? Brain Rot. But that term has taken on new significance in the digital age, especially over the past year or two. Brain rot is a term used to describe the phenomenon involving a constant consumption of short, fast-paced content that can overwhelm the brain, leading to decreased attention spans, mental exhaustion, and a reduced ability to engage with deeper, more meaningful activities. Initially gaining traction on TikTok among Gen Z and Gen Alpha communities, brain rot became so widespread that Oxford University Press even named it the 2024 word of the year. But what if I told you that the term “brain rot” gaining mainstream prominence could prove extremely important in further expanding and evolving the cognitive health category? I believe brain rot moving into the mainstream lexicon could have the power to democratize the cognitive health category. And that's because “brain rot” doesn't age discriminate, or for that matter…discriminate based on ethnicity, gender, or any other characteristic. In fact, very rarely is anyone completely protected today against experiencing mental fatigue from social media information overload. Now in stating that…purchasing behavior doesn't necessarily change materially just because a societal problem has been catapulted into the minds of more consumers. And there's pros and cons to when a functional CPG category is democratized. But something that usually helps push that consumer awareness down funnel through consideration and into purchasing activity is having that category creating brand that unlocks massive commercial success by meeting consumers where they're at with the ideal product development variables…eventually triggering competition that further evolves the market. And while there's a multitude of competitors currently within the cognitive health category…it hasn't seen a Liquid I.V. or Vital Proteins type breakout brand that creates the category by pushing democratized consumer awareness down funnel unlocking massive commercial success. But in stating that…I also acknowledge this business phenomenon could occur in the near-term future from a strengthening sub-segment of the cognitive health category. And then finally, instead of providing you with a typical collection of “retail sales data trends” to validate what you already intuitively assume, that peak performers are more frequently seeking out “fast-acting cognitive-boosting” functional CPG products in convenient formats to improve their daily life, I wanted to end this content a bit differently by adding value through an anecdote surrounding my recent personal journey to minimize “brain rot.”

As the founder and CEO of CoPeace Capital, he's on a mission to use investing as a force for good, ensuring that more people—especially those historically excluded from wealth-building opportunities—can participate in equity investing.“Many communities have not had the access to growing their wealth through equity investing,” Craig explained. “And the crowdfunding platforms allow that to happen.”CoPeace, a Certified B Corporation and Public Benefit Corporation, has been actively raising capital from the crowd, successfully leveraging Regulation Crowdfunding to fuel its impact-driven investments. By embracing this approach, CoPeace is not only funding its own growth but also identifying promising companies that align with its mission. The company has already invested in businesses focused on sustainable infrastructure and social impact, proving that financial returns and positive change can coexist.Craig emphasized that success in impact crowdfunding isn't automatic—it requires effort, strategy, and community engagement. “The number one learning is that it's not magic. It takes work to develop the crowd that might want to invest in what you're doing.”A common misconception about impact investing is that it requires sacrificing returns. Craig challenges that notion, pointing out that market-based returns are not only possible but often stronger when companies prioritize sustainability and long-term value creation. “Not only are we seeing kind of market-based returns, but the data is showing that it is a good business decision to care about the future of our world,” he said. With plans to launch a larger fund, CoPeace Capital is expanding its ability to invest in high-impact businesses while continuing to make equity investing more accessible. Craig's leadership in this space demonstrates that with the right approach, anyone can leverage capital to drive meaningful change. For those looking to align their investments with their values, CoPeace offers a compelling example of how financial success and social impact can go hand in hand.tl;dr:* Craig Jonas, CEO of CoPeace Capital, discusses using impact investing to democratize access to wealth-building opportunities.* He shares insights from CoPeace's successful Regulation Crowdfunding campaign and how it supports mission-aligned businesses.* Craig challenges the misconception that impact investing requires sacrificing financial returns, highlighting data that supports market-based gains.* He explains his superpower, empathic awareness, and how it shapes his leadership and investment strategies.* Craig offers practical advice for developing empathic awareness, emphasizing active listening, reflection, and immersing oneself in diverse environments. How to Develop Empathic Awareness As a SuperpowerCraig's superpower is empathic awareness—the ability to perceive and deeply understand the emotions and perspectives of others.Craig describes this skill as an essential part of navigating the impact investing space. "I think my superpower is empathic awareness and the ability to kind of perceive what others are thinking," he shared. By listening intently to stakeholders, investors, and the communities CoPeace serves, Craig ensures that their needs and concerns shape the company's mission and strategy. One powerful example of Craig's empathic awareness took place during his time as a basketball coach in post-apartheid South Africa. Selected as the first American coach to work in the townships, he recalls sensing the fear and hesitation in the eyes of young players as he entered their community. By being present, acknowledging their lived experiences, and creating a space of mutual trust, he fostered a meaningful connection that made the basketball clinic not only a success but also a transformational moment for everyone involved.Craig believes that developing empathic awareness requires intentional effort. His tips include:* Pause and Reflect: Before reacting, take an extra moment to consider the perspectives of others.* Engage in New Environments: Step outside your comfort zone by immersing yourself in different cultures and communities.* Observe Role Models: Identify and learn from individuals who demonstrate deep empathy in their interactions.* Listen Actively: Focus on understanding rather than responding—allow people to share their experiences fully.By following Craig's example and advice, you can make empathic awareness a skill. MCoBeauty CMO Meridith Rojas: 'Dupes democratize beauty'

The Glossy Beauty Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 20, 2025 58:27

For MCoBeauty CMO Meridith Rojas, the ability to democratize the beauty industry lies in the power of dupes.  “We're in this moment, in this cultural zeitgeist, where people don't want to have to spend $1,000 on a face of beauty and don't want to be left out of the trends,” said Rojas. “We really want to create luxury for everyone. And of course, we have amazing dupes, but we also have some homegrown innovation. The combination has been really magnetic, and our community is growing in the U.S. so fast. We have a very exciting year ahead of us.”  Dupes, the colloquial term for a lower-priced product inspired by a luxury category leader, makes up about half of MCo's offering. Unlike counterfeits or copies, which are often associated with unsafe formulas and flagrant IP violations, dupes are in their own category and are incredibly popular globally.  MCoBeauty sells recognizable dupes for popular products from brands like Charlotte Tilbury, Drunk Elephant, Sol de Janeiro and Laneige for around a third of the price. For example, MCo Beauty's best-selling Flawless Glow Foundation retails for $14.99, and its Miracle Flawless Pressed Powder goes for $9.99. Similar products from Charlotte Tilbury retail for $49 and $28, respectively. It also offers non-dupes, like its best-selling XtendLash tubing mascara, which sells for $13.99. MCoBeauty was launched in Australia in 2016 by founder Shelley Sullivan, a former modeling agency owner. It is currently the top-selling color cosmetics brand in Australia and New Zealand, according to Greg Barker, MCoBeauty's evp of North America. As previously reported by Glossy in December, MCoBeauty launched its U.S. expansion at the end of 2024 with entry into 1,700 Kroger stores, which include regional grocery stores like Smiths, Fred Meyer, King Soopers, Frys, Ralphs and more. The expansion also includes DTC sales via MCoBeauty's site and Amazon. This week, MCo Beauty also launched into 1,300 Target doors and on Target.com.  Rojas joined The Glossy Beauty Podcast to discuss MCoBeauty's U.S. expansion and the marketing strategy supporting it. She shared anecdotes about the company's OOH and digital marketing successes, including advice on building a digital community, connecting with influencers early in their careers, getting the best community UGC and hiring digitally-minded celebrities to lead social-first campaigns.

(Sneak peek: it has nothing to do with rogue robots.)* Are participatory processes good enough to bind companies to the decisions they generate? * How we need to fundamentally change our conception of ‘AI expertise.'* How worker and public participation can shift the short-term thinking and incentives driving corporate America.* Should AI companies become direct democracies or representative ones? * How Divya would structure public participation if she had a blank sheet of paper and if AI companies had to adopt the recommendations. That's it for now,Charley This is a public episode. We learn about Jeff's journey from politics and public affairs to launching Delve Deep Learning, an AI-native company revolutionizing public affairs intelligence. He explains his AI Innovation Process, which includes training AI to be your intern, testing and selecting the best tools, deciding whether to be a buyer or builder, launching for external use, and iterating on the process. He also highlights how this approach helps businesses streamline workflows, scale services, and democratize access to AI-powered public affairs intelligence. --- Tap AI to Democratize Your Business with Jeff Berkowitz Good day, dear listeners, Steve Preda here with the Management Blueprint podcast. And my guest again, after four years, is Jeff Berkowitz, co-founder and CEO of Delve Deep Learning, an AI native tech company building the future of public affairs intelligence. Welcome back to the show, Jeff. Thanks. It's great to be here. I didn't realize it'd been four years. Time flies when you're having fun. Maybe three and a half, but thereabouts. And you were representing a different company at that time because Delve Deep Learning is a startup that you guys launched since. And we will talk about that. But I'd like to start with a question asking you about your personal “Why” and what are you doing in your new business to manifest it? Yeah, I mean, for me, my passion is really comes down to free enterprise. I've always really believed that when we give entrepreneurs and business leaders the opportunity to flourish, they create prosperity and opportunity for everybody and make our society better. And first sort of built on that passion in politics and government and the past, 14-15 years stumbled into entrepreneurship myself. And really both delve and now Delve Deep Learning have been focused on how do we help companies the insights they need to navigate all these complexities and pressures as they try and build opportunity and prosperity for our society. Wow, that's pretty big, sounds pretty lofty. So tell me a little bit about the idea. So why did you come up with the Delve Deep Learning? What triggered launching the company and how did you end up basically disrupting your own business? We did. We have done a little bit of disruption of our own business here. But look, I think one of the key things that business leaders have to do is keep their eyes open for the inflection points in our society and technology and business.Share on X And we try and do that for our clients. What are the inflection points that you've got to navigate in policy debates and regulatory debates? But when we saw AI coming to the forefront, generative AI with ChatGPT 3.5, and really becoming something that was ready as a technology to leverage, it was super interesting to us. And we really dug into what does this mean for our industry, for our work, and saw an opportunity to really build on many of the things we'd love to have done with technology for a long time, but it wasn't possible before. Okay, so what is it? How does AI help you create a better experience for your customers or clients? Yeah. So at Delve, we saw our research consultancy and we have a whole team of really smart research analysts that are spending all day digging through what's happening in policy debates and what are different stakeholders saying, how is that analyzing, how does that impact companies, industries, different policy issues. And it's very qualitative work. You can't just throw traditional machine learning or data science at that and get meaningful results. For our client base, it was not. They couldn't do what we do in-house, right? Because most of them can't build out a research shop. But what we saw with AI is we can train these AI models ...

A New Approach to Building Community Wealth Introduction   In many leftist circles, the term "wealth building" can trigger skepticism. It often brings to mind the language of neoliberal capitalism, where wealth creation is synonymous with the exploitation of labor and the concentration of resources in the hands of the few. With wealth inequality reaching historic highs, housing costs soaring beyond reach for many, and environmental devastation rampant due to the unbridled market forces of capital, should we rethink how we approach wealth? The concept of "community wealth building" offers an alternative rooted in collective ownership and control, challenging the individualist, competitive frameworks of traditional wealth accumulation.   Community wealth building seeks to empower workers and communities through cooperative models of enterprise, public ownership, and socially controlled financial institutions. It challenges the logic of capital by redistributing economic power from corporations and financial elites to the people. As Colin Bruce Anthes argues in his article "Canada Needs A Federal Community Wealth Building Agenda" for Canadian Dimension, this model represents a radical departure from the status quo, positioning economic justice as the foundation of democratic life. In a time when neoliberalism has hollowed out communities and starved them of resources, could community wealth building be the pathway to a more egalitarian and environmentally sustainable future?   Check out our new bi-weekly series, "The Crisis Papers" here: https://www.patreon.com/bitterlakepresents/shop   Thank you guys again for taking the time to check this out. L&D leaders in large organizations often cite a lack of time as the main barrier to upskilling and reskilling. While increasing learning hours is important, the CLO Lift team found that time is not the most critical factor. Instead, the quality of learning has equal or greater influence on performance than the quantity of time spent. Rather than focusing solely on hours, business leaders and L&D professionals should emphasize value. This episode explores these insights with Lisa Christensen and Huw Newton-Hill. KEY TAKEAWAYS CLO Lift is a community of 20 CLOs who have got together to solve the biggest unresolved challenges in the L&D industry. You have to create true value before enough time will be allocated to employee learning. If you are not 100% in step with the business the training that you provide will be out of date and not relevant. The learning you deliver must genuinely enable people to make progress in their careers. L&D needs to stop only being order takers. Work more closely with managers to understand business challenges and be actively involved in finding solutions. Certain elements of people´s roles impact the way they behave. If a learning intervention cannot change that element speak up and ask those who can solve that underlying issue to do so. Create a learning culture, e.g. include skill acquisition in personal reviews. Democratize access to learning. Use generative AI to make the training more relevant in every role in every geography. Measure progress against actual business objectives. Start now. Create some small experiments and generate wins. You only need one win to create credibility and act as a springboard. BEST MOMENTS “Ensure that the whole body of L&D is in lockstep with the business.” “The more courage you lean into, the more credibility you build.” “Be bold and go forth.” “Any good action today is better than perfect action a month from now.”   CLO Lift, From Time to Value report: https://learningforum.substack.com/p/clo-lift-from-time-to-value?r=ivpaq&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&triedRedirect=true   Lisa Christensen Bio: As Director of Learning Design and Innovation at McKinsey & Company, Lisa leads a global team focused on cutting-edge learning solutions. Legendary entrepreneur Joel Hyatt has built extremely disruptive ventures that have democratized services across legal, technology, and media sectors. He did it with legal services for ‘the rest of us' when he co-founded Hyatt Legal in the 70's —busting the ban on lawyer ads—and also shook up the industry by adding legal as an employee benefit, which is now part of MetLife. After winning an antitrust case which broke up a big media stronghold, he and Al Gore started Current TV pioneering user-generated content. Current TV was hot, and received multiple Emmys, Peabodys, and Livingston Awards, investments from Comcast and Direct TV and is now a part of Aljazera Media Network. Joel's latest venture, Globality, is all about streamlining and enhancing the procurement process for businesses. Leveraging both machine learning and generative AI, the company offers something totally unique it calls “autonomous self-serve sourcing.” And what's interesting is that this is no 2024 VC-backed start-up leaping on the AI bandwagon. Joel has been developing this solution for years, and so has both learned what works and what doesn't. On this episode Joel shares decades of wisdom from his various endeavors that democratized oligopolies; unpacks untold stories about how Globality is transforming the boring side of business—and tells some fun and humorous startup stories with his friend Al Gore. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/rebootchronicles/message

Episode 043: In this episode, Kyle talks with Justin Steitz, President at Copper Financial. In his role, he leads sales, investment operations, compliance, and audits for the CommunityAmerica advisor channel and the broker-dealer business unit. Justin is dedicated to the credit union mantra of "people helping people" and focuses on giving back to the community. With a strong background in compliance, he is well-versed in the highly regulated wealth management industry. Before joining the Copper Financial team, Justin served as Chief Compliance Officer for Ausdal Financial Partners, Inc., where he led the effort to build an in-house broker-dealer. Justin talks with Kyle about the unique challenges and opportunities of serving the credit union space. He highlights the importance of philanthropy and community in the credit union industry and how Copper Financial is dedicated to helping credit union members invest and improve their financial well-being. Join us as we discuss: [01:47] - Copper Financial's philanthropic activities. [03:35] - Justin's money moment that led him to a career in wealth management. [06:40] - How Copper Financial creates investment programs for clients of all sizes. [11:42] - Why credit unions are lagging behind in digital adoption. [14:14] - What differentiates Copper Financial from other investment firms. [18:28] - The competitive advantages of credit unions over wealth management firms and private banks. [24:01] - The challenges and benefits of AI in the industry. [29:08] - Justin's thoughts on the future of wealth management and credit unions. [32:32] - Milemarker minute: must-see places in Kansas City, Chiefs' game vs Royals' game, and bucket list travel destination. Key Takeaways Copper Financial provides investment programs for credit unions and is driven by the credit union mantra of "people helping people." The credit union industry is community-focused and emphasizes giving back to members and the community through philanthropy and financial literacy programs. Technology, including robo-advisors and self-directed trading, is driving the evolution of credit union wealth management. Credit unions have historically been slower to adopt digital technologies due to resource constraints. There is a growing need to compete with fintech companies and provide members with digital investment options. Quotes "It doesn't matter if it's $500 or $5 million, we're going to work with them. And that was my moment of 'I'm all in.' I build products and services for credit union members to invest in. I love to help people. And it went into that mantra of people helping people. Now, I get to do it in the industry I love and help change people's lives." ~ Justin Steitz "We can be the entry point, not only digitally, and get you to start investing. Then, we have the financial advisors to grow and morph into. It's a one-stop shop." ~ Justin Steitz "It comes down to survival of the fittest with the amount of technology that's in the space. You've got to be spending money on technology in order to compete, or a customer or a member is going to go somewhere else where they have that." ~ Justin Steitz Links  Justin Steitz on LinkedIn Copper Financial CommunityAmerica Credit Union Robinhood Betterment SoFi Stash Vanguard Connect with our hosts Milemarker.co Kyle on LinkedIn Jud on LinkedIn Subscribe and stay in touch Apple Podcasts Spotify YouTube Google Podcasts Produce game-changing content with Turncast Turncast helps your company grow by producing top-quality content and fostering transformative conversations.
