Joining us today is Matt Reed, a Creative Strategist at Red Pepper Agency. Matt is the first Creative Strategist I have ever met, and what he and his agency are doing with what I would call evolutionary creative prototyping has the potential to be a game changer for their field and others. I think I used the term "blown away" in this interview more than any other interview we've had. Matt was a blast to talk with and really shared a different view of what the future of creative technology has in store for us. Frequent RP guest Juliet Jacques returns to the show to expand on her 2020 Red Pepper article 'How Corbyn unmasked comedy' (https://www.redpepper.org.uk/how-corbyn-unmasked-comedy/) in a discussion of the generation of British comedians and satirists who emerged in the 1990s from under the wing of two titans, Chris Morris and Armando Iannucci, following their mock news show On The Hour's successful transition from radio to television as The Day Today. We look at their many shows and films, the political milieu they came out of, their key collaborators, and ask when - or if - it all went wrong for these anti-establishment firebrands.
This week Nick and Angela welcome Nish Kumar to Dish HQ. Nish is a critically acclaimed comic who has won rave reviews and prestigious award nominations for his stand-up. Away from the comedy circuit, he is a regular on TV shows like 8 out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, Live at the Apollo and Taskmaster, and can often be heard presenting The News Quiz on BBC Radio 4. This year, you may have caught him on the hilarious Sky TV series Hold the Front Page, alongside Josh Widdicombe, or heard his brand-new political podcast, Pod Save the UK, from the makers of the hugely successful Pod Save America. Angela Harnett leads a masterclass in Italian cooking on this episode of Dish, making gnocchi from scratch. (For the rest of us, it's available readymade at Waitrose) The meal is paired with a delicious white wine, Triade Bianco. Nish Kumar brings plenty of laughter to the table, discussing food (the best meal he's had in India), family (his parents' ploy to make him grow up) and friendship (what he really thinks of Ed Gamble and James Acaster). Just so you know, our podcast might contain the occasional mild swear word or adult theme. All recipes from this podcast can be found at waitrose.com/dishrecipes A transcript for this episode can be found at waitrose.com/dish We can't all have a Michelin star chef in the kitchen, but you can ask Angela for help. In this second part of our conversation with Greg Schechter of Schechter Natural History, we talk about his excellent field guide app, his youtube channel, and cook up a delicious Middle Eastern egg dish.Recipe – “Shakshuka” Ingredients – · 6-8 roma tomatoes · 18-20 cloves garlic· One yellow onion· Red Pepper flakes· 1 Red Bell pepper (optional)· 6 eggs· Smallest can of tomato paste (4-6oz)· Oregano· EVOO· Parmesan or any other harder, grateable cheese.· Parsley, Cilantro or Chives for garnish· Salt and pepper· Foil· Hand grater or microplaneOptional sides/additions –· Grilled bread from our Avocado Toast recipe· Corn tortillas· Grilled steak from our first recipeChop tomatoes and onion. Slice garlic cloves into thin slices. Cut the bell pepper in a small dice if using. Heat olive oil until shimmering in cast iron skillet on a medium heat part of the fire. Add onions, garlic, chili flakes and bell pepper if using. Sweat out till onions just start to caramelize and garlic goes golden brown. Add the can of tomato paste and stir in. Add another drizzle of olive oil, add a pinch of oregano and toss. Add chopped tomatoes with a few spoons of water and a generous pinch of salt. Toss to combine everything, and start cooking it down, stirring occasionally until the tomatoes break down and puree and take on a sauce like consistency.Make 6 little “wells”, or depressions, in the tomatoes, and crack eggs into them. Season with salt and pepper.Remove from heat and cover with aluminum foil. Tuck the foil around the pan to make a seal. Return to the fire over a cooler part of the fire, and let cook 10-15 minutes, till egg whites are set, and yolks are at your desired consistency. Remove from heat, and grate the cheese over the whole thing, letting it start to soften and melt. Serve directly from the pan, eating with toast, tortillas or on its own.Schechter natural history on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/SchechterNaturalHistoryField apps: https://schechterguides.com/@schechterguides on instagram
Tom Grennan is a Bedford boy done good. With a flair for football, he pursued a professional career in his teens until the competition proved too stiff. Taking stock, Tom decided to give his other gift a shot. He began gigging around London and got spotted in a pub by a record label. His songs ‘A Little Bit of Love' and ‘By Your Side' (with Calvin Harris) were the second and third most played tracks of 2021 and his new tune ‘All These Nights' is out now. As Tom is pescatarian, Angela plated up some delicious hake with a roast red pepper sauce made with love by our novice chef Nick. Round the table, Tom tries an olive for the first time, shares his unconventional mash potato recipe and if you thought Grimshaw's G-Wagon story was good (James May episode) ...wait till you hear what happened to Tom's brand new wheels. One of the crops I really thought would be easy to grow that turned out not to be for me was peppers, specifically bell peppers. Turns out not only do peppers really prefer a lot of heat, they also prefer more water than I typically use in my gardens and in my fields. And peppers are one of those plants that I get asked about all the time in messages and at the farm stand. Because once you get the hang of it, you can grow boatloads and we bring lots of beautiful peppers to market and it gets people talking. It's also one of those vegetables that is a mainstay in many people's kitchens and they can be expensive at the grocery store, so knowing how to grow your own is high up on the gardening wish list for a lot of people. So, today we'll talk all about peppers, both sweet and hot, how to get them to germinate, their feeding requirements, planting, spacing, harvesting and all the usual basics. By the end of this episode, I hope you can fill in the gaps of what's been going on with your peppers to get you some success or give you the confidence to give them a try if you're new to the capsicum scene. So, let's dig in to growing peppers.
