"The Distressor is an iconic piece of gear." Dave talked about his journey from musician to audio engineer, creating the iconic Distressor compressor, the role of distortion, harmonics, and thoughtful gear selection in achieving masterful audio mixing and production, and offered practical advice for aspiring recording engineers. Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Dave Derr, a musician raised in a family of engineers destined to rock and make his mark on the recording industry. Dave started with studying classical piano, composition, and theory as a Music Major in college but still loved ripping solos on his '67 Gibson SG Special. This passion for music led him to a 12-year journey with the band Jack of Diamonds, touring the Philadelphia, Delaware, and Maryland areas. But Dave wasn't just rocking the stage—he was also the guy fixing the band's guitars, keyboard rigs, and PA systems. This hands-on experience sparked his path to becoming an Electronics Technician and eventually a studio engineer. Dave landed a gig at Eventide and worked alongside industry giants, contributing to the design of iconic gear like the H3000, H3500, and DSP4000. And after hours? He ran his own recording studio at home, refining his craft night and day. In 1994, Dave's talents culminated in the creation of the Distressor—a modern classic that's now a staple in major studios worldwide. Empirical Labs now has over 42,000 Distressors sold and an entire line of analog processors and digital plugins and their latest creation, the PUMP, a powerful 500 Series compressor based on the Distressor is breaking new ground for getting killer sounds in the studio or out in the field. I am super excited to have Dave Derr joining us on the podcast today. This is a big day for me, the show, and definitely a bucket list interview! Social Anxiety Solutions - your journey to social confidence!
In this Episode... Now, when we hear someone getting angry at us, we believe it has something to do with us as a person. We believe that they are judging us for who we are. We believe that they are looking out for more imperfections that they can throw against us when they have the chance. But that is not true. When someone is angry at you, it doesn't mean they judge you as a person. It might be something to do with your actions... It might be something to do with the words that you used... ...but your words and actions do not define who you are as a person. You know who you are better than anybody else. When you apply the tapping, you release any strong negative emotions from the past, and you let go of the old outdated way of seeing things. That will help you change the way you think. That will help notice a real lasting change. The process of change doesn't happen overnight, it's a journey...not a destination. John was such an insightful guest. We go deep on why he started the game and his business. With any good guest, there's genuine intent and that could not have been more apparent with John. After an unfortunate car accident ended his football dreams, a good neighbour showed him Golf and he actually had to learn the game from the green back to the tee with the physical ramifications of the accident! Amp Caddy is a speaker for the golf course that brings more than just music to the course. It brings soul. It sets the scene, gives the vibe and ensures a good time on the course. To attract more guys to the game, we need to help make Golf more causal (at the right times) and Amp Caddy goes a long way to do that. John cares so much about the golfer's experience and that is so evident with the products he produces. Inspired from a BMW spec Golf cart at the local country club, John recognised the want and need for easy access to music on the course. We also vibe hard on what Golf is lacking currently and what it needs to reverse participation numbers. We both got back to the same place. Connection & Experiences need to be held in the highest regard at all times. Hope you enjoy and get some value, Nation! I’m so tired of all the BS out there about making money online. Every coach and guru out there is trying to sell you on a dream - the idea that you can work a few hours a week, bust out the laptop on the beach, and spend the rest of your time chilling and drinking mojitos. Don’t get me wrong - that dream IS possible. But what the internet marketers and gurus DON’T tell you is that it takes a massive amount of work and hustle to get to that point. I’ll get more into the passive income myths in the next video, but for now I want to focus on the 3 ways you can start making money online in 2017, aka the types of online income. These online income streams can help you become a digital nomad, quit your full-time job, or just create a side hustle that will pay off your student loan debt. The 3 ways you can make money online are: 1. Passive 2. Residual 3. Active The first way that you can make money online is what’s commonly called “passive income”. This means that you make money while putting no work in. This IS possible… it’s just way more rare than you think. I would argue that the only real way to build up truly passive income is to build a valuable business and then create people and processes that run that business for you. Another way you can have truly passive income is by the “traditional” passive income route - having a bunch of investments that pay you money on a regular basis. The second way you can make money online is residual income. This is what most people are actually doing when they tell you they are making passive income. Residual income means you put in work up front that you get paid for several times over. For example - let’s say you create a great digital product around cat care and cleaning. Once you set up the website, funnels, traffic systems, product delivery systems, payment processing, and customer support… You will be making money off that product time and time again without putting much more work in. Another example of residual income is the membership site my wife and I run. We have created a bunch of content that continues to work for us, as people are constantly signing up for our membership site. So that content we created a year back or however long ago is continuing to pay dividends… which is awesome! However, at the same time - we are constantly creating new content for our membership program... So in reality, even our membership income is quite active still. So while we aren’t making PASSIVE income, we are making HIGHLY LEVERAGED income… aka a lot of money from not that much work (after the initial burst of work of course). The third type of income you can make online is active income. This is basically being a freelancer. I feel like active income gets a bad rap, but I don’t really understand why. Look - if you want to have time freedom and location independence, being a freelancer is probably the best way to get started. And guess what? If you get good enough as a freelancer, you can definitely work part-time hours and make full-time money. But again - the path to becoming good takes time. There are strategies you can use to optimize your effort, but there aren’t any shortcuts here. PS Go hit “subscribe” up above if you haven’t already - and keep your eyes peeled for my next video where I really break down the myths and realities of passive income.
