They also talk about their most recent project together, a paper presented at “For a Wise Purpose in Him” The 2026 Small Plates of Nephi Conference In Honor of President Jeffrey R. Holland. This paper looks at evidence that there was a gradual loss of knowledge of the full name and mission of Jesus Christ between Jacob and King Benjamin, because Benjamin receives this information from an angel. "The start of a new year is the traditional time to take stock of our lives and see where we are going, measured against the backdrop of where we have been. I don't want to talk to you about New Year's resolutions, because you only made five of them and you have already broken four. (I give that remaining one just another week.) But I do want to talk to you about the past and the future, not so much in terms of New Year's commitments per se, but more with an eye toward any time of transition and change in your lives—and those moments come virtually every day of our lives. As a scriptural theme for this discussion, I have chosen the second-shortest verse in all of holy scripture. I am told that the shortest verse—a verse that every missionary memorizes and holds ready in case he is called on spontaneously in a zone conference—is John 11:35: “Jesus wept.” Elders, here is a second option, another shortie that will dazzle your mission president in case you are called on two zone conferences in a row. It is Luke 17:32, where the Savior cautions, “Remember Lot's wife.” Hmmm. What did He mean by such an enigmatic little phrase? To find out, I suppose we need to do as He suggested. Let's recall who Lot's wife was. The original story, of course, comes to us out of the days of Sodom and Gomorrah, when the Lord, having had as much as He could stand of the worst that men and women could do, told Lot and his family to flee because those cities were about to be destroyed. “Escape for thy life,” the Lord said, “look not behind thee . . . ; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed” (Genesis 19:17; emphasis added). With less than immediate obedience and more than a little negotiation, Lot and his family ultimately did leave town, but just in the nick of time. The scriptures tell us what happened at daybreak the morning following their escape: The Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven; And he overthrew those cities. [Genesis 19:24–25] Then our theme today comes in the next verse. Surely, surely, with the Lord's counsel “look not behind thee” ringing clearly in her ears, Lot's wife, the record says, “looked back,” and she was turned into a pillar of salt. In the time we have this morning, I am not going to talk to you about the sins of Sodom and Gomorrah, nor of the comparison the Lord Himself has made to those days and our own time. I am not even going to talk about obedience and disobedience. I just want to talk to you for a few minutes about looking back and looking ahead. One of the purposes of history is to teach us the lessons of life. George Santayana, who should be more widely read than he is on a college campus, is best known for saying, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it” (Reason in Common Sense, vol. 1 of The Life of Reason [1905–1906]). So, if history is this important—and it surely is—what did Lot's wife do that was so wrong? As something of a student of history, I have thought about that and offer this as a partial answer. Apparently what was wrong with Lot's wife was that she wasn't just looking back; in her heart she wanted to go back. It would appear that even before they were past the city limits, she was already missing what Sodom and Gomorrah had offered her. As Elder Maxwell once said, such people know they should have their primary residence in Zion, but they still hope to keep a summer cottage in Babylon (see Larry W. Gibbons, “Wherefore, Settle This in Your Hearts,” Ensign, November 2006, 102; also Neal A. Maxwell, A Wonderful Flood of Light [Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1990], 47). It is possible that Lot's wife looked back with resentment toward the Lord for what He was asking her to leave behind. We certainly know that Laman and Lemuel were resentful when Lehi and his family were commanded to leave Jerusalem. So it isn't just that she looked back; she looked back longingly. In short, her attachment to the past outweighed her confidence in the future. That, apparently, was at least part of her sin."   ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------    For Come Follow Me lesson manual and materials visit- Come, Follow Me For Individuals and Families: New Testament 2023 https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/manual/come-follow-me/2023?lang=eng     For a list of 100+ episodes of ACU Sunday Series visit- https://www.podbean.com/site/search/index?kdsowie31j4k1jlf913=85cb8104bdb182c048b714ad4385f9e82a3aeb49&v=ACU+Sunday+Series+ Note- Click on “100 Episodes Found” in upper right corner.   For many different Podcasts based on the ‘Come Follow Me' program visit- https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=come+follow+me+   Subscribe to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for the latest videos: http://bit.ly/1M0iPwY Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/churchofjesu... To be very clear, the best guide you can possibly have for making choices is Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the strength of youth. So the purpose of For the Strength of Youth is to point you to Him. It teaches you eternal truths of His restored gospel—truths about who you are, who He is, and what you can accomplish with His strength. It teaches you how to make righteous choices based on those eternal truths.13 It's also important to know what For the Strength of Youth does not do. It doesn't make decisions for you. It doesn't give you a “yes” or “no” about every choice you might ever face. For the Strength of Youth focuses on the foundation for your choices. It focuses on values, principles, and doctrine instead of every specific behavior. The Lord, through His prophets, has always been guiding us in that direction. He is pleading with us to “increase [our] spiritual capacity to receive revelation.”14 He is inviting us to “hear Him.”15 He is calling us to follow Him in higher and holier ways.16 And we are learning in a similar way every week in Come, Follow Me.     ACU Endorsed Charities -------------------------------------------------------- Pre-Born! Today I respond directly to a talk given by Jeffrey R. Holland at Harvard Law School — not a devotional, not a church sermon, but a presentation delivered in one of the most prestigious academic settings in the world. In this talk, Holland claims that Mormonism represents the restoration of original Christianity, not a deviation from it. He makes sweeping assertions about:Apostasy and priesthood authorityThe nature of God and JesusWhy Latter-day Saints shouldn't be considered creedal ChristiansThe First Vision, Adam and Eve, revelation, and divine authorityIn this video, I engage directly with Holland's own words — no strawmen, no caricatures, no social-media summaries. I examine:Whether these claims hold up historicallyWhether they make sense biblicallyWhether they stand up logicallyAnd whether emotional conviction can substitute for evidenceWhen someone makes global historical claims and cosmic authority claims in an academic setting, the standard of evidence should be higher — not lower. In this response, I walk through why Holland's presentation leans heavily on rhetoric and tradition, but offers no verifiable support for the extraordinary claims being made.If you care about truth, evidence, and how religious claims hold up outside the bubble of faith, this one's for you.

Was the Flood an Act of Mercy? by Autumn Dickson Noah's ark is one of the most classic bible stories. Even when you're not Christian, many people are aware of the story and what it means. I read these verses in the last post for this week, and I'm going to read them again with a new angle. Genesis 7:19-20, 23 19 And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills, that were under the whole heaven, were covered. 20 Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered. 23 And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark. The Lord destroyed everything. Oftentimes, this is rightfully seen as an act of justice. According to the Come Follow Me manual, the flood was also an act of mercy. I love that justice and mercy often come together, and I want to expand upon that. Here is a quote from the Come Follow Me manual. Elder Neal A. Maxwell taught, “corruption had reached an agency-destroying point that spirits could not, in justice, be sent here.” During Noah's time, the world had become so dark and devastating that bringing new children into the world would have been wrong. When you study child abuse and neglect, this makes complete sense. There comes a point when you are so traumatized that trauma is all you can offer others. And if there are no healthy adults to save the children, then society will just get darker and darker until it destroys itself anyway. Perhaps God destroyed the evil, but they would have destroyed themselves anyway. Because of His decisions, He was also able to save many of the spirits that would have gone down and been destroyed alongside the rest. Now this was an extremely large scale event, but that's what makes it such an easy example to observe. Here is another scriptural example on a slightly smaller scale. In The Book of Mormon, Nephi is teaching his brothers and trying to get them to repent, but they hate the things of God. Here is a verse that shows some of Nephi's pleadings. 1 Nephi 17:45 Ye are swift to do iniquity but slow to remember the Lord your God. Ye have seen an angel, and he spake unto you; yea, ye have heard his voice from time to time; and he hath spoken unto you in a still small voice, but ye were past feeling, that ye could not feel his words; wherefore, he has spoken unto you like unto the voice of thunder, which did cause the earth to shake as if it were to divide asunder. The Lord had to be severe to reach them. We see this over and over and over again throughout scripture. Paul the apostle, Alma the Younger, the Israelites all throughout the Old Testament. You will see this theme all throughout Come Follow Me this year. The Lord is willing to do what's necessary in order to reach us, but there is an important, adjacent understanding that goes hand in hand with this. Jeffrey R. Holland taught, “Justice is not the work of an offended tyrant. It is the loving labor of a Father who is trying to get His children safely home.” I LOVE this quote. He is not an offended tyrant. God is a loving Father, and He is wise enough to know how to reach His children. He's not trying to punish us into submission. He's trying to get through to us. In 1 Peter, we learn that Christ went and preached to those in prison, specifically to the disobedient from the times of Noah. I wonder if they were finally ready to listen. I wonder if the flood and spirit prison reached them so that they were ready to live their life in a manner that brought happiness. I wonder if they are friends with Noah now. If they have repented, then I know this. They are grateful for the Lord and His wisdom in raining down justice and reaching them. All of God's decisions are based on love for His children, the seemingly severe and the softly spoken answer. He chooses the option that will most powerfully reach us. We've seen this on a large scale like with Noah and the flood, we've seen it on a smaller scale with Laman and Lemual. What does it mean for your own life? We have to be careful not to take this principle beyond its proper bounds. The principle is this: God will use tragedy to reach us if it's necessary because He loves us. The principle is not this: If you're experiencing something tragic, it is because God is using tragedy to punish you or because you really need to repent. Tragedy does not equate to wickedness, but it can be a tool that God uses sometimes. It just depends. I testify that all of God's decisions are based on love. I testify that suffering in mortal life is not the worst thing that can happen to a person. I testify that death is not the worst thing that can happen to a person. I testify that God is wise enough to do what it takes to reach us, and I testify that He sent His Son to wash us, heal us, and suffer with us so that He could succor us when we're prepared to accept that loving kindness. I testify that God uses justice to be merciful in our lives. Autumn Dickson was born and raised in a small town in Texas. She served a mission in the Indianapolis Indiana mission. She studied elementary education but has found a particular passion in teaching the gospel. Her desire for her content is to inspire people to feel confident, peaceful, and joyful about their relationship with Jesus Christ and to allow that relationship to touch every aspect of their lives. Autumn was the recipient of FAIR's 2024 John Taylor Defender of the Faith Award. The post Come, Follow Me with FAIR – Genesis 6–11; Moses 8 – Part 2 – Autumn Dickson appeared first on FAIR.

Fatal Shooting at Salt Lake City Meetinghouse The Story: A tragic shooting occurred in the parking lot of a meetinghouse on Redwood Road during a funeral, leaving two men dead and six wounded. Why it's first: It is a violent event on church property involving the death of members. It touches on issues of safety at houses of worship. Key Detail: The victims were part of Utah's Tongan community. The Tongan population in Utah is significant; per the 2020 Census, Utah has the largest Tongan population of any state, with over 18,000 residents identifying as Tongan alone or in combination with other races. Angle: Focus on the tragedy of violence interrupting a “celebration of life” and the community response. Funeral of President Jeffrey R. Holland & Leadership Changes The Story: Following President Holland’s passing in late 2025, his funeral is set, and President Dieter F. Uchtdorf has been named Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve. Why it's important: This is a major shift in the “ecclesiastical org chart.” With President Oaks now President of the Church and Holland passing, the leadership dynamic changes significantly. Visual Aid: Because the hierarchy has shifted rapidly (Nelson passing, then Holland passing), a visual aid helps the audience visualize the new seniority. “The Next Apostle” Speculation The Story: With the vacancy left by President Holland, there is speculation on who President Oaks will call next. Angle: Discuss the Op-Ed suggesting “history making” picks like a Black apostle or someone from a non-traditional background (like a sports coach, though that is unlikely). This is great engagement fodder for listeners. Dissolving the Temple Square Mission The Story: After 30 years, the all-female Temple Square Mission is ending. Sisters from surrounding missions will now rotate in. Why it matters: This is the end of a specific cultural era. The Temple Square sisters were a unique fixture of Church headquarters. Angle: The shift toward “hybrid” missionary work (tours + traditional proselytizing) and the hiring of paid guides to assist. 2026 Mission Leadership Assignments The Story: 188 new mission presidents and companions called; 55 newly created missions. Angle: The sheer volume of new missions indicates the growth or reorganization efforts previously announced by the late President Nelson. Love is Blind Villain “Disowned” The Story: Kacie McIntosh, a cast member on Season 9, claims her LDS family “shunned” her due to her appearance and discussion of sex on the show. Why it matters: This hits the intersection of pop culture and “faith crisis/family dynamics” that resonates with many listeners. Angle: The tension between reality TV fame and conservative religious family values. The “Mysterious” Youth Vote (Data Heavy) The Story: Young Latter-day Saints are identifying less as Republicans, though they still lean conservative on social issues. The Stats: 40% of LDS voters aged 18-29 identify as Republican. 35% identify as Democrat. 25% identify as Independent. Despite the shift in labels, 56% of older Gen Z/Young Millennial members still supported the Republican presidential candidate in 2024. BYU “Hot Mic” Moment The Story: BYU player Therrian Alexander III was caught swearing on a hot mic during the Pop-Tarts Bowl. Angle: A lighthearted but debated topic—the pressure on BYU athletes to represent the “Honor Code” perfectly on national TV versus the reality of high-stakes sports. Ruby Franke & Jodi Hildebrandt Update The Story: An update on the aftermath of the abuse case. Kevin Franke has remarried; Ruby is still in prison; Shari Franke has written a memoir. Why it matters: This story gripped the Mormon internet (and the world). The update provides closure on the family’s attempt to heal. President Jeffrey R. Holland passed away earlier this week, and he and his family have been in my thoughts are prayers. Of course, like so many of you, I loved his words – both the content and the way he delivered his sermons. He had a style that was sincere, powerful, thoughtful, insightful, and so much more. We all loved him so much, and we'll all feel this loss. Of course, I'm sure that President Holland's passing has prompted many people including me to revisit many of this talks and words. I share many quotes that I appreciated and loved from President Holland in this episode. I will miss his amazingly positive influence in my life.

Send us a textTravis of The Holy Rebellion joins us in remembering Jeffrey R. Holland and the impact he had in so many lives.  Elder Jeffrey R. Holland was a beloved apostle and senior leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, known for his powerful testimony of Jesus Christ, his teaching ability, and his lifelong commitment to strengthening the faith of Latter-day Saints. He was born December 3, 1940, in St. George, Utah, and early in life served a full-time mission in Great Britain, an experience that shaped his devotion to missionary work and discipleship. Before full-time Church service, Elder Holland was deeply involved in Church education. He earned degrees in English and religious education from Brigham Young University and a master's and Ph.D. from Yale University. He served as Dean of Religious Education, Church Commissioner of Education, and as the ninth president of BYU, where he emphasized gospel learning and helped expand educational opportunities. In April 1989, he was called as a General Authority Seventy. A few years later, on June 23, 1994, he was ordained a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, one of the highest governing bodies of the Church, charged with being a special witness of Jesus Christ to the world. As an apostle, Elder Holland's ministry touched many globally. He frequently spoke at General Conference, sharing heartfelt sermons on Christ's love, the power of the Atonement, and the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon. In 2025, he spoke about the evidence of God's works and testified of the Book of Mormon's impact as a spiritual guide. newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.orgElder Holland was set apart as President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles on October 14, 2025, a role in LDS Church governance that places him next in line to lead the Church under its established order of succession when the Church president passes. Throughout his service, members remembered him for his steadfast testimony of the Savior, his ability to lift the weary with compassionate words, and his unwavering devotion to gospel principles. His life and teachings have been a source of encouragement and dedication for countless Latter-day Saints around the world. Support the Show!www.patreon.com/SaintsintheSouth(The thoughts, ideas, and beliefs we express on this channel do not officially represent The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  For additional information or official statements, please visit the website below.  The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/?lang=eng)#biblestudy #oldtestament #religion #churchofJesusChrist #ldspodcast #christianpodcast #missionary #lds #biblestories #christ #faith #faithinchrist #scriptures #bookofmormon #doctrineandcovenants #pearlofgreatprice #temples #houseofthelord #mormon #mormonbeliefs #christiansandmormons #god #endure #ironrod #faithineveryfootstep #generalconference #prophets #followtheprophet #commandments #love #service #charity #keepstriving #keeponstriving #gospelgrowthandgoodtimes #become #newtestamentSupport the showThanks for listening! In this encore episode, I'm teaching you how to make decisions with clarity, confidence, and self-trust — especially when the stakes feel high and the fear of "getting it wrong" feels paralyzing. If you've ever second-guessed yourself, stayed stuck in indecision, or looked outside yourself for answers you already have, this conversation is for you. I walk you through a simple three-step decision-making process: exploring your options, deciding deliberately, and then committing — again and again — even when your brain wants to panic or pull you backward. I explain why indecision often feels safer to our brains, how to recognize when fear is driving your choices, and how to reconnect with your wise, grounded self so you can move forward with intention. I also share personal examples, including one of the hardest decisions of my life, and how learning to trust myself changed everything. You don't need perfect certainty to decide — you just need self-honesty and the willingness to follow through. Key takeaways: Indecision keeps you stuck, even when it feels safer You can learn to trust your own judgment again Commitment builds confidence over time Cast Not Away Therefore Your Confidence by Jeffrey R. This episode is about Joseph Smith. This episode includes testimonies from many different people. From the manual: The afternoon of June 27, 1844, found Joseph and Hyrum Smith in jail once again, accompanied by John Taylor and Willard Richards. They believed they were innocent of any crime, but they submitted to arrest, hoping to prevent violence against the Saints in Nauvoo. This wasn't the first time that enemies of the Church had put the Prophet Joseph in prison, but this time he seemed to know that he would not return alive. He and his friends tried to comfort each other by reading from the Book of Mormon and singing hymns. Then gunshots were heard, and within a few minutes the mortal lives of Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum had come to an end. And yet it was not the end of the divine cause they had embraced. And it was not the end of the Restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ. There was more work to do and more revelation that would guide the Church forward. Killing the Prophet could not kill the work of God. Please also watch this, I forgot to mention it on the podcast but it's one of my all time favorite talks about the Prophet Joseph Smith.  It's called, "Safety for the Soul" by Jeffrey R Holland. I always keep a copy in my pocket, and I share it with people who are curious about our standards. It has been updated and refreshed to better cope with the challenges and temptations of our day. The new version of For the Strength of Youth is available online in 50 different languages and will also be available in print. It will be a significant help for making choices in your life. Please embrace it as your own and share it with your friends. This new version of For the Strength of Youth is subtitled A Guide for Making Choices. American Conservative University Podcast (ACU) is not an official representative for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Holland's April 2025 general conference address, “As a Little Child.” President Holland, renowned for his ability to speak directly to the soul, offers a moving and deeply personal reminder of what it means to be humble, meek, and full of childlike faith. With his signature warmth and candor, President Holland recounts the Savior's invitation to His disciples: “Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven”. Through tender stories and powerful testimony, he illustrates how the innocence, purity, and trust of children are not just endearing-they are essential qualities for anyone seeking to draw closer to Christ. You'll hear examples that will bring a smile to your face and perhaps a tear to your eye, such as the story of a young boy's courage and faith that moved his father to tears. President Holland reminds us that children love easily, forgive readily, and laugh delightfully-qualities that can soften even the hardest heart and transform our relationships with God and each other. This episode is more than a discussion; it's an invitation to examine your own heart. Are there places where pride has crept in? Could you use more of the childlike attributes of faith, loyalty, purity, and love in your life? President Holland's words will encourage you to let go of burdens and rediscover the joy and spiritual power that come from becoming as a little child before God.

I'm fixed upon it, Mount of thy redeeming love.   Here I raise my Ebenezer, Hither by thy help I'm come; And I hope, by thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home. Prone to wander Lord, I feel it, Prone to leave the God I love; Here's my heart, O take and seal it, Seal it for thy courts above.   Jesus sought me when a stranger, wand'ring from the fold of God; He, to rescue me from danger, Interposed his precious blood. Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, Prone to leave the God I love; Here's my heart, O take and seal it, Seal it for thy courts above.   O to grace how great a debtor Daily I'm constrained to be! Let thy goodness, like a fetter, Bind my wand'ring heart to Thee. Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, Prone to leave the God I love; Here's my heart, O take and seal it, Seal it for thy courts above, Seal it for thy courts above.

American Conservative University Podcast (ACU) is not an official representative for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Our mission is to bring relief to the poorest of the poor in the countries where we serve. We strive to reflect God's unconditional love. It's a sacrificial love that embraces all people regardless of race or religion. We believe that we can show His love by serving the “least of these” on this earth as Christ challenged us to do in Matthew 25.
