    Episode 65: Jehovah Rapha

Join Lisa and Laura for our series Names of God. In biblical times, names were of great importance—they conveyed a person's essence, history, nature, or character. As we explore the various names of God in the Old Testament, we gain insight into His character. With each name, we will learn a new attribute, deepening our understanding of and growing closer to God. In today's episode, we explore our third name, Jehovah Rapha, the God who heals. The word “rapha” often refers to physical healing in Scripture, but it has a more expansive meaning, too, involving the entire person. Jehovah Rapha doesn't just heal the body. He heals the mind and soul. In a world desperate for healing, this is an episode you do not want to miss. Grab your Bible and invite a friend to listen. We all need Jehovah Rapha! Open your Heart to our key Scripture. Exodus 15:26: If you will listen carefully to the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in his sight, obeying his commands and keeping all his decrees, then I will not make you suffer any of the diseases I sent on the Egyptians; for I am the LORD who heals you. Open your Bible to other Scriptures referenced in this episode. Exodus 3:13–14: Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the sons of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,' and they ask me, ‘What is his name?' what shall I say to them?” God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” Psalm 22:14–15: I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; my heart is like wax; it is melted within my breast; my strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue cleaves to my jaws; you lay me in the dust of death. Exodus 15:22–27 Romans 8:22: We know that all creation has been groaning with labor pains together until now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait for the adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. Romans 5:5: Hope does not disappoint us. Invite Him in with this episode's questions for reflection. Are you in the place between devastated hope and deliverance? Bring your heart to Jehovah Rapha and ask, what does He want to reveal and what He is longing to heal? Is it a physical illness? Sin? Trauma? Childhood wound? Unforgiveness?  Show mentions. Episode 64: El Shaddai

In today's episode, we explore our second name, El Shaddai, which comes from two Hebrew words, “El,” the singular word for God, and Shaddai, meaning “Almighty” or “All-Sufficient.”  Do you believe that God is your Sustainer and has the power to show up in impossible situations and work miracles? Or do you take matters into your own hands when it looks like God isn't coming through on His promises? Today's conversation is one of our favorites, and you are encouraged to grab a cold drink, your Bible, settle in, and receive the truth you desperately need to hear: God can do the impossible. Open your Heart to our key Scripture. Genesis 17:1: When Abram was ninety-nine years old the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless." Open your Bible to other Scriptures referenced in this episode. Genesis 12:1–2: Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.” Genesis 15:2–3: “O Lord God, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” And Abram said, “Behold, you have given me no offspring; and a slave born in my house will be my heir.” Genesis 15:4: “This man shall not be your heir; your own son shall be your heir.” Genesis 16 Genesis 17 Genesis 18:12–14: So Sarah laughed to herself, saying, “After I have grown old, and my husband is old, shall I have pleasure?” The Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, and say, 'Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?' Is anything too hard for the Lord?” Genesis 18:15: But Sarah denied saying, “I did not laugh”; for she was afraid. And He said, “No, but you did laugh.” Genesis 22 Romans 4:18–21: In hope he believed against hope, that he should become the father of many nations; as he had been told, “So shall your descendants be.” He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was as good as dead because he was about a hundred years old, or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah's womb. No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. Psalm 91:1–2: He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High, who abides in the shadow of the Almighty, will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.” Invite Him in with this episode's questions for reflection. How is God calling you to trust Him as El Shaddai? Look at that area of life where He is asking you to trust Him and ask yourself whether there's a root of bitterness in your heart because you feel He is taking too long.  Show mentions. Episode 57: Aim at Righteousness

Make this Lent the most fruitful Lent ever. Join Lisa and Laura as they explore Passionate Discipleship, a nine-week Lenten Bible study series. In these powerful episodes, they'll unpack Paul's wisdom to his closest friend, Timothy, and reflect on how we can apply it to our lives today. As we grow in personal holiness, we will boldly step into our call as true disciples by reaching out to the next generation and passing on all that we've learned. In today's episode, they discuss Lesson 4: Aim at Righteousness and the importance of how we pass on the baton of faith.  Our faith is the greatest treasure! We don't want to “wield it like a boulder;” we need to share it in a way that makes it seem appealing. But how? Grab your Bible and tune in because you are about to find out. Open your Heart to our key Scripture. 2 Timothy 2:11–13: If we have died with him, we shall also live with him; if we endure, we shall also reign with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us; if we are faithless, he remains faithful—for he cannot deny himself. Open your Bible to other Scriptures referenced in this episode. Matthew 18:9: And if your eye is causing you to sin, tear it out and throw it away from you. It is better for you to enter life with one eye, than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fiery hell. Galatians 5:24: Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 2 Timothy 2:15: Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:16–17: Avoid such godless chatter, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness, and their talk will eat its way like gangrene. James 3:6: And the tongue is a fire. The tongue is an unrighteous world among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the cycle of nature, and set on fire by hell. Sirach 27:4–7: When a sieve is shaken, the husks appear; so do people's faults when they speak. The furnace tests the potter's vessels; the test of a person is in conversation. The fruit of a tree shows the care it has had; so speech discloses the bent of a person's heart. Praise no one before he speaks, for it is then that people are tested. 2 Timothy 2:21: If anyone purifies himself from what is ignoble, then he will be a vessel for noble use, consecrated and useful to the master of the house, ready for any good work.  Luke 6:45: Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 2 Timothy 2:22–25: So shun youthful passions and aim at righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call upon the Lord from a pure heart. Have nothing to do with stupid, senseless controversies; you know that they breed quarrels. And the Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome but kindly to every one, an apt teacher, forbearing, correcting his opponents with gentleness. Invite Him in with this episode's questions for reflection. Take the time this week to think about and listen to the words that come out of your mouth. Identify your biggest pitfall (in silence ask the Holy Spirit to point this out). And then go to prayer and pray for the opposite virtue. Show mentions. Matthew Kelly pilgrimage Let's stay connected. If you want to know what to pass on, what it will require, and why it matters, this episode is for you.   Open your Heart to our key Scripture. 2 Timothy 2:2: And what you have heard from me before many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am sure that he is able to guard until that Day what has been entrusted to me. Isaiah 53:3: He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief. Matthew 10:16: Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Matthew 10:17—18: Beware of men, for they will deliver you up to councils, and flog you in their synagogues, and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear testimony before them and the Gentiles. 1 Samuel 7:12: Then Samuel took a stone and set it between Mizpah and Jesha'nah, and called its name Ebene'zer, for he said, “Hitherto the Lord has helped us.” 2 Corinthians 12:9: My power is made perfect in weakness. 2 Timothy 2:8—9: Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, descended from David, as preached in my gospel, the gospel for which I am suffering and wearing chains like a criminal. But the word of God is not chained. 1 Corinthians 15:14: If Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. 1 Corinthians 15:17: If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. 1 Corinthians 15:20: But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead. 1 Corinthians 15:51—55: We shall not all sleep, but we shall be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. For this perishable nature must put on the imperishable, and this mortal nature must put on immortality. When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O death, where is thy victory? O death, where is thy sting?” 2 Timothy 2:3: Bear your share of hardship along with me like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. Invite Him in with this episode's questions for reflection. The truth is, we are all called to be mothers, to mother the world back to Christ. If you are wondering how, tune in and find out. Open your Heart to our key Scripture. Malachi 3:10–11: Bring the full tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house; and thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you an overflowing blessing. Welcome to Season 2 of Hope for Right Now: A Walking with Purpose Podcast. This week Lisa and Laura kick off the new year with a brand new four-part series: The Feminine Genius. Saint John Paul II coined the phrase “feminine genius” in his open letter titled, Mulieris Dignitatem (On the Dignity and Vocation of Women). In it he writes:  “The Church gives thanks for all the manifestations of the feminine ‘genius' which have appeared in the course of history, in the midst of all peoples and nations; she gives thanks for all the charisms which the Holy Spirit distributes to women in the history of the People of God, for all the victories which she owes to their faith, hope and charity: she gives thanks for all the fruits of feminine holiness.”  There are four components in the feminine genius: receptivity, sensitivity, generosity, and maternity. Each week, through the writings of Saint Edith Stein, personal stories, and the Word of God, Lisa and Laura will unpack one of these components. This week, it's all about receptivity!  So ladies, are you ready to unleash your feminine genius? Grab your Bible and let's go! Open your Heart to our key quote. Join Lisa and Laura for our 4-week Advent series, House of Gold. The Virgin Mary is called the House of Gold because she was Jesus' resting place: the one who threw the doors wide open with her YES. Mary made room for Jesus, and she has room in her heart for each one of us, too. In this third week of Advent, they unpack the Marian title, Mary, Queen of Martyrs. Why is Mary a martyr if she didn't die a martyr's death? Why are we focusing on suffering during the happiest time of year? These questions, and many more, are answered in today's episode. Grab a cup of coffee and settle in—you do not want to miss this episode! Open your Heart to our key Scripture.  Luke 2:35: And a sword will pierce through your own soul also. Open your Bible to other Scriptures referenced in this episode.  Revelation 2:4–5: You do not love as you did at first. Remember then how far you have fallen. Repent and live as you lived at first. Ephesians 6:12–14: For we are not contending against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore. Mark 5:41: “Talitha koum,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise!” Romans 8:26: In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. (NIV) Invite Him in with this episode's questions for reflection. Today is a special day for Walking with Purpose. It's the Feast Day of Saint Therese of Lisieux, our patron saint! And at WWP, we are all about getting women into Scripture so they can encounter Christ personally and apply it to their everyday lives. This is why St. Therese is our perfect guide: she spent countless hours studying Scripture and sharing a simple way for us to experience God's Word that is personal and transforming. Today on the podcast, Laura Phelps honors the Little Flower as she shares three not-so-typical reasons why she loves Saint Therese and calls her a friend.  Open your Heart to our key Scripture.  2 Corinthians 12:9–11: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” I will all the more gladly boast of my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.  For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities; for when I am weak, then I am strong. Open your Bible to other Scriptures referenced in this episode. Proverbs 9:4: Whosoever is a little one, let him come to me. (Douay-Rheims) Matthew 11:28–30: Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. Jeremiah 17:7: Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. Joshua 1:9: Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; be not frightened, neither be dismayed; for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. Psalm 116:6: The Lord preserves the simple; when I was brought low, he saved me. Invite Him in with this episode's questions for reflection. What character trait do you believe disqualifies you from becoming a great saint?  Does the idea of being little and depending on God frighten you? What staircase are you trying to climb alone? Do you write letters? Maybe today is a good day to start. Show mentions. Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ Pope Pius VII, “She rediscovered the Gospel itself, the very heart of the Gospel.” St. Therese of Lisieux, The Story of a Soul Michael E. In today's episode, Lisa and Laura dive into lesson 3 of Ordering Your Priorities, Priority 2: Your Heart. Most of us live as if our hearts aren't a priority. We tend to put other people's hearts before our own, believing that's what a good woman is supposed to do. But guess what? We matter to God. Our wild and beautiful hearts are the most essential parts of us, and if we don't tend to them properly, we run the risk of becoming physically, mentally, and spiritually spent. Are you ready to build the good life by prioritizing your heart? Well, then…grab a cup of coffee, settle in, and click play! Open your Heart to our key Scripture. Psalm 56:9: My wanderings you have noted; are my tears not stored in your flask, recorded in your book? Open your Bible to other Scriptures referenced in this episode. Philippians 2:2–4: Do nothing out of selfishness or conceit but in humility count others better than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Matthew 16:25: Whoever wants to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. Jeremiah 31:3: I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you. 1 Samuel 16:7: The Lord sees not as man sees; man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart. Isaiah 43:4: You are precious in my eyes and honored, and I love you. Psalm 4:8: In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety. Invite Him in with this episode's questions for reflection. What form of self-care do you turn to instead of inviting the Lord to heal your heart? What are you trying to get through that is meant for you to grow through? Show mentions. CCC 2563: The heart is the dwelling-place where I am, where I live…The heart is our hidden center, beyond the grasp of our reason and of others; only the Spirit of God can fathom the human heart and know it fully. Episode 34: Priority 1: Your Relationship with God

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 16, 2024 35:00

In today's episode, Lisa and Laura dive into Lesson 2 of Ordering Your Priorities, Priority 1: Your Relationship with God. If we desire to live lives of purpose, happiness, and fulfillment, we have got to get this priority right! Why? Because only God knows what will make us happy and what we most long for. But let's be honest: it can be hard to trust God. When we have experienced hurt or abandonment, putting God first doesn't come easily. If this is your struggle, join Lisa and Laura in this powerful conversation and discover how a personal relationship with God changes everything for the better. Open your Heart to our key Scripture.  Psalm 91:1–4: He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High, who abides in the shadow of the Almighty, will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.” For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and the deadly pestilence; he will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler. Open your Bible to other Scriptures referenced in this episode.  Sirach 51:2: You have been my protector and helper, and have delivered my body from destruction, and from the snare of a slanderous tongue, from lips that utter lies. Deuteronomy 32:10–12: He found him in a desert land, and in the howling waste of the wilderness; he encircled him, he cared for him, he kept him as the apple of his eye. Like an eagle that stirs up its nest, that flutters over its young, spreading out its wings, catching them, bearing them on its pinions, the Lord alone did lead him. Ecclesiasticus 51:31: Draw near to me, ye unlearned, and gather yourselves into the house of discipline. (Douay-Rheims) Psalm 5:3: O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I plead my case for you and watch. Psalm 143:8: Let me hear of your steadfast love in the morning, for in thee I put my trust. Invite Him in with this episode's questions for reflection. St. Josemaría Escrivá said, “Conquer yourself each day from the very first moment, getting up on the dot, at a fixed time, without yielding a single minute to laziness. If, with God's help, you conquer yourself, you will be well ahead for the rest of the day. It's so discouraging to find oneself beaten at the first skirmish... “The heroic minute. It is the time fixed for getting up. Without hesitation: a supernatural reflection and… up! The heroic minute: here you have a mortification that strengthens your will and does no harm to your body.”  What lie plays in your mind that says this is impossible for you to do? What could you change in your nighttime routine in order to faithfully give God the first part of your day? Show mentions. Henri Nouwen, Finding My Way Home: Pathways to Life and the Spirit. The start of a new season and school year allows us to reboot. Even if we no longer have kids in school, it's a chance to turn a page in the calendar and start fresh. But let's be honest…it can also be incredibly overwhelming. This is why Ordering Your Priorities is the perfect study for this time of year. Join Lisa and Laura as they walk us through Ordering Your Priorities, an eight-week Walking with Purpose Bible study. Here's the truth: not all things are urgent, and some good things can remain undone. If the thought of not getting it all done makes your heart race, this series is for you! In today's episode, Lisa and Laura discuss Lesson 1, Talk 1: Building the Good Life, setting the stage for the weeks ahead. Tune in now, and let's start building the good life together! Open your Heart to our key Scripture. Matthew 7:24–27: Every one then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house upon the rock; and the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And every one who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house upon the sand; and the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell; and great was the fall of it. Open your Bible to other Scriptures referenced in this episode. Psalm 33:11: The plans of the LORD stand firm forever, the purposes of His heart through all generations. (NIV) Psalm 32:8: I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you. Luke 11:28: Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it. Luke 14:28–30: For which of you, deciding to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, “This man began to build, and was not able to finish.” Jeremiah 6:16: Thus says the Lord, “Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls.” 2 Corinthians 4:18: Because we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen; for the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal Invite Him in with this episode's questions for reflection. In which relationship are you feeling the scrape of the chisel? Are you feeling tempted to pull back and isolate? Invite God to reveal to you if this is actually an opportunity to grow more like Him. Show mentions. St. John Paull II. Man cannot live without love. He remains a being that is incomprehensible for himself, his life is senseless, if love is not revealed to him, if he does not encounter love, if he does not experience it and make it his own, if he does not participate intimately in it. This, as has already been said, is why Christ the Redeemer “fully reveals man to himself.” Flourish: The Art of Being Human. Register here. Benjamin Windle, Digital Church in a Lonely World. We all carry brokenness, personality quirks and the ability to make choices that hurt others. However, the potential pain of being in community is not simply an unwanted by-product; it is a key part of the purpose of community. It is the very fact that community costs us something that makes it valuable. Beth Moore: If we only choose to be around those who require virtually nothing hard from us, what will prompt us to change? God often uses others as the chisel to carve true integrity into our rough personalities. A chisel that never scrapes the stone is useless. Join us for Lesson 5 in our six-week summer series based on our Living in the Father's Love Bible study, How Do I Work at Forgiving Myself and Others? Forgiveness is such an important topic that we devote two lessons to it: the Bible study lesson and the talk that follows. One of the reasons we think it matters so much is because lack of forgiveness hits us on every level physically, emotionally, relationally, and spiritually. Lisa and Laura know that talking about forgiveness is tender territory, because when forgiveness is needed, something serious has happened. But they also understand how crucial it is to forgive. Why? Well, grab your Bible (and definitely a pen and paper because you will want to take notes) and find out! Open your Heart to our key Scripture.  Matthew 7:1–5: Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get. Join us for Lesson 2 in our six-week summer series based on our Living in the Father's Love Bible study. Today, Lisa and Laura talk about God's boundless love for us, while acknowledging that for many, our experience of father has fallen way short. When our earthly fathers disappoint us, it can be hard to trust God. But there is good news—no matter what, we can all find our way back to Abba, Father! As we study this lesson together, we hold hearts gently and ask the Holy Spirit to guide us. So grab your study guide, grab a friend, and let's discover the truth about our Father. This is an episode you do not want to miss. Open your Heart to our key Scripture. 1 Corinthians 13:4–8: Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful; it is not arrogant or rude. Love does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. Open your Bible to other Scriptures referenced in this episode. 1 John 4:16: God is love. And you know the way where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but by me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also; henceforth you know him and have seen him.” Romans 8:15: For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received a spirit of adoption, through which we cry, “Abba, Father!” Invite Him in with this episode's reflection. CCC 539: The evangelists indicate the salvific meaning of this mysterious event: Jesus is the new Adam who remained faithful just where the first Adam had given in to temptation. Jesus fulfills Israel's vocation perfectly: in contrast to those who had once provoked God during forty years in the desert, Christ reveals himself as God's Servant, totally obedient to the divine will. In this, Jesus is the devil's conqueror: he "binds the strong man" to take back his plunder.
