1. If fallen man is unable to keep God's law, he cannot be obligated to keep it. Impotence obviously cancels responsibility. A child three or four years of age ought not to be whipped because it does not read and write. A legless man should not be sent to prison because he does not walk. Surely a just and holy God does not require sinful creatures to render perfect obedience to a divine and spiritual law. How is this objection to be met? First, by pointing out that it is not based upon Holy Writ but is merely human reasoning.
Because God is who He is and because man is the work of His hands, the will of God must be the foundation of moral obligation. "All things were created by him, and for him" (Col. 1:16). "Thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created" (Rev. 4:11). But God is not only our Creator. He is also our Ruler and Governor, and His rights over us are made known by His will, by His expressed will. Man is bound to do what God commands and to abstain from what He forbids, simply because He commands and forbids. Beyond that there is no reason. Direct reference to the divine will is essential to any moral virtue. When an action is done regardless of God's will, no honor is shown Him and no virtue pertains to it. Such is the clear and definite teaching of Holy Writ; it knows no foundation of right or wrong, no obligation, except the will of the Most High. It therefore follows that the will of God revealed is the rule of duty.
we'll see where Nebuchadnezzar a servant-of-God who wrote the chapter in which Daniel included in Holy Writ, for time and peoples to come, as a testimony to The Sovereignty of The Most High God, who rules in Heaven and earth and exalts who he will, even from the most bases of men. He had humbled His prideful arrogance to cause him to realize his equality with other men and could be as base as a animal in thinking.

Purchase Indescribable Atlas Adventures here During today's conversation on Back Porch Theology Alli, Dr. Howard and I will exploring a few of the awesome ~ albeit often overlooked ~ theological truisms in the Christmas story. Because while Jesus is of course the main point and the unmistakable Hero of Luke's heartwarming birth narrative, if you read between the lines, you'll find a distinctive trinitarian motif as well. And the Incarnation ~ that is when divine grace was embodied in a baby boy born to an unmarried teenage mom in Bethlehem over 2,000 years ago ~ was always intended to be the first of two Advents. Because the infant those ancient shepherds marveled over is the very same Messiah John refers to as the Ancient of Days in the book of Revelation who will return triumphantly to redeem those of us who've put our hope in His unconditional love. In other words, there's an eschatological component to the Christmas story too, y'all! Despite our familiarity with the nativity scene, there's still some gorgeous facets to discover in that proverbial crown jewel of Holy Writ. So please take a break in your “elving” errands and grab a non-fat, no-foam mocha latte with one pump of peppermint, or a hot spiced apple cider with a hint of caramel, or a nutmeg-laced eggnog with extra heavy yak cream, or whatever overpriced, holiday-themed concoction you prefer, and your Bible, then come prop your feet up on the porch with us. Welcome Morocco to the podcast; we are glad you are listening, and we will learn more about you in days to come. For now, we quote the famous line from Casablanca, "Play the podcast again, Sam." Missed it by that much. Psalm 139 is one the most moving, comforting, and detailed descriptions of God's Omniscience in the Holy Writ. A sample of what David teaches us: God saved us, knowing our sins intimately. We cannot flee His mercies. Our darkest days are not dark to Him. We are designed to be exactly to be us. Our So What? We are excessively comforted by His knowledge and humbled by His mercies. Humbled to call out, as David did: "Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts; 24 And see if there be any hurtful way in me, And lead me in the everlasting way." Amen Brethren, let's pray for one another. There is a safe and sure criterion by which the Christian may gauge his inward impulses, and ascertain whether they proceed from his own restless spirit, an evil spirit, or the Spirit of God. That criterion is the written Word of God, and by it all must be measured. The Holy Spirit never prompts anyone to act contrary to the Scriptures. How could He, when He is the Author of them! His promptings are always unto obedience to the precepts of Holy Writ.
The Longer we are saved and take our faith seriously, the more our perception of God and His word changes it has to we are growing, 1 Peter 2:1 So, as we look at our passages this October, we are trying to stay out of the way and ask the following question: What does the Author of Scripture say, and how might His letter to us impact the content of our prayers? At the start of our October celebration, I asked the worldwide audience to sincerely pray for my Christian culture here in the U.S. that we would put God at the very center of our lives. It is our great need. "Pray, then, in this way: 'Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. 10 'Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven." Matthew 6:9 How you might apply this passage to your supplications (for yourself) and your intercession (your prayer for others)? Thank You for listening and considering what the Author of the Holy Writ has to teach us. The Bible is also known as the Word of God, the Holy Scriptures, the Good Book, a Treatise, the Holy Writ, the Living Word, and an anthology. It's power, influence and endurance is unmatched by anything! The Bible is not just a collection of writings from a group of authors like Chaucer, Shakespeare, Longfellow, Dickens, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and Louisa May Alcott but it is handbook for living life in harmony with our Creator not only in this life but in the life hereafter as well.
Fund conversations that matter: donate.accessmore.com During today's conversation on Back Porch Theology we're stepping into some seemingly foreboding biblical territory that we've yet to venture into on this podcast, which is the Old Testament book of Daniel. If Daniel was on a geographical map, it'd probably be punctuated with huge mountains and treacherous rivers and volcanos because Daniel is one of the more complex books of Holy Writ. It takes place during a very tumultuous time period in Israel's history, when many of the Southern Jews were swept away into captivity in Babylon, where young Daniel is soon catapulted from slave to sage because of his God-given ability to interpret the King's nightmares. Daniel's story ultimately spans the time-period of several Babylonian kings and includes sorcery, fiery furnaces, man-eating lions, mental illness, and an attempted coup or two. To call it a drama is a massive understatement! Plus, the book of Daniel includes lots of prophecy regarding God's people, as well as an overarching eschatological – or “end time” – theme so it can be a unwieldy booger to interpret, much less figure out how it applies to Christ followers today. Which is why we've enlisted the help of our dear friend, Kristin Brewer, who co-wrote the production of Daniel for the Sight and Sound Theatre, which has just recently been released to movie theatres across the nation. So please grab your Bible, a beverage, and a tub of popcorn and come join us on the porch for a deep dive into the breathtaking adventure of Daniel, featuring the never-ending faithfulness of our Creator Redeemer!Daniel Live is playing now. “The sweet psalmist of Israel.” — 2 Samuel 23:1 Among all the saints whose lives are recorded in Holy Writ, David possesses an experience of the most striking, varied, and instructive character. In his history we meet with trials and temptations not to be discovered, as a whole, in other saints of ancient times, and […]
The -god- of this twentieth century no more resembles the Supreme Sovereign of Holy Writ than does the dim flickering of a candle the glory of the midday sun. The -god- who is now talked about in the average pulpit, spoken of in the ordinary Sunday School, mentioned in much of the religious literature of the day, and preached in most of the so-called Bible Conferences is the figment of human imagination, an invention of maudlin sentimentality.

Fund conversations that matter: donate.accessmore.comDuring today's conversation on Back Porch Theology Alli and I have the profound privilege of hanging out with two women who are spiritual heroines to us – Dr. Dorian Coover Cox, a professor of Old Testament Studies at Dallas Theological Seminary, and Dr. Lynn Cohick, a Distinguished Professor of New Testament and Director of Houston Theological Seminary at Houston Christian University. I've known Dr. Cohick for many years because she was the provost at Denver Seminary and within five minutes of meeting her, I began plotting how to talk her into becoming one of my mentors! She's one of the first people I shared my dreams about Kerygma to and has been part of it since the inception. In fact, I told her a few weeks ago that she's now part of the proverbial living room furniture in my life, so she'd better never think about leaving! And while I've known of Dr. Coover Cox for years because she's one of the spiritual mentors of BPT's very own Dr. Howard, this year at Kerygma was the first time we got to hang out with her in person, and within 5 minutes she got grafted into the family too! Dr. Coover Cox is an expert on Exodus and Dr, Cohick is an expert on Ephesians so we're going to glean from these two saints' wisdom and camp out in those two books of Holy Writ today and let me encourage you to bring a notebook along with your coffee and your Bible, because you're going to want to take notes on the porch today, baby!
About 2.5 years ago or so, French asked his mom for a Bible, not a kids' Bible, and she, of course, said yes. As he walked away, he told her, emphatically, "And I'm gonna read it!" The amazing part is that he was just starting to learn to read at the time, and he taught himself to read with that Bible! His only motivation for his work was his desire to read the Bible. Thank You, Jesus. It was fitting that French, whom I affectionately call Baby French, chose Psalm 4 as the psalm he wanted to read and learn about prayer from. This psalm, penned by David, offers some of the most comforting promises in the Holy Writ, providing solace and reassurance in times of need. "But know that the LORD has set apart the godly man for Himself; The LORD hears when I call to Him." And "In peace I will both lie down and sleep, For Thou alone, O LORD, dost make me to dwell in safety." Psalm 4:3 and 8 French struggles a little with fears, especially at bedtime, so to know…well you can listen to French pray for his and our peace and praise from What a blessing! Since we're right around the corner from The Kerygma Summit '24 where 1,500 ministry leaders and Bible-loving chicks from three different countries are gathering here in Franklin, TN for a 3-Day spiritual boot camp, I thought it'd be fitting to spend today's conversation on Back Porch Theology with one of the most gifted Bible expositors and evangelists I've ever met, who just so happens to be one of my best friends, Christine Caine. And I can't wait for y'all to lean into this episode because Chris is going to wrap historical context and practical theology around one single verse in the Gospel according to Luke that can have a resurrective kind of impact on our future. In Luke 17:32, Jesus spoke three interesting words: "Remember Lot's wife." We don't know her name, history, or all the details of her story. All we know is that when she was fleeing Sodom and Gomorrah with her husband Lot and their two daughters, she intentionally disobeyed God's clear command to not look back and was consequently zapped into a pillar of salt, making her the first Scary Spice several millennia before the girl band borrowed that moniker. Mrs. Lot is one of the more infamous women in biblical narrative and out of the 170 women referred to in Holy Writ, she's the only one Jesus told us to remember. If you're feeling stuck this season – mired in all-too-familiar feelings of shame, discouragement, resentment, unforgiveness, apathy or just wishing the reality of your life bore more resemblance to the life of your dreams, I believe today's conversation could be the catalyst Holy Spirit uses to lift you out of the spiritual doldrums and back into the hope-filled future God promises for all of us through the Old Testament prophet Jeremiah. So please grab a cup of your favorite beverage and your Bible – unless you're weaving through a herd of anxious cows on a scooter of course – and come hang out on the porch with us.

We live in a world that offers competing forms of Revelations and Traditions. In the Church, one or the other or perhaps a combination of the two are set forth as a Rule of Faith. But what type of Revelation or Tradition is offered in the Bible? Is the Bible a sufficient Rule of Faith or is it inherently in need of a parallel source of material that constitutes, in perpetuity, an equal Rule of Faith distinct from Holy Writ?Whether it's the Rich man being told that the writings of Moses were sufficient to testify to his brothers to avoid eternal, conscious torment or the Bereans being commended for verifying Paul's preaching and teaching by searching the Scriptures for themselves, the Bible must be consulted to decide the issue of what constitutes the Rule of Faith, doesn't it?This episode is brought to you by Psalm 119!
Today's conversation on Back Porch Theology is a bona-fide bonus episode because we've kicked our normal conversational parameters to the curb and are having a rollicking, revelatory good time with a really special guest today – best-selling author, renowned New Testament scholar, seminary professor, and one of our favorite theologians here on Back Porch Theology, Dr. Scot McKnight. Alli and I have had the privilege of getting to know Dr. McKnight because he's been one of the keynotes at The Kerygma Summit the past two years so when asked him to be our tour guide as we explore the complex caboose of Holy Writ, the book of Revelation, he graciously agreed. Because of its dramatic imagery of dragons, sea creatures, beasts, and divine heroes blazing through the sky on horseback, this biblical prophecy has fascinated readers since John wrote it under the inspiration of Holy Spirit almost 2,000 years ago. However, because of its apocalyptic tone, it's also been used to strike fear in the heart of hearers and send dutiful Christians scrambling to Costco to stockpile water and canned food as we prepare for impending doom when the world as we know it implodes. Thankfully, Dr. McKnight gives us a more redemptive hermeneutical lens through which to understand and apply the book of Revelation – one that recognizes John's prophetic symbolism as timeless theology instead of a specific prediction of events that will take place in a future time. Mind you, he might step on your toes a time or two while doing so because his academic exegesis likely won't match up with every jot and tiddle of your ingrained eschatology, but it's totally worth the toe pinch because the takeaway is a compelling charge to better reflect the Living Hope of Jesus Christ in the current Babylon of modern culture. So please grab a cup of coffee and open your Bible to the back – unless you've got both hands wrapped around a wee pebble high up on a wall and are wondering how in the world you got talked into a rope-climbing course, of course – and come hang out on the porch with us. The apple of God's eye, the Jews, are a people that have been persecuted like no other. We read about it not only throughout the pages of Holy Writ, but in the annals of history as well. Olivier Melnick joins us to discuss this very topic. I will be the first to say that it's not an easy one to discuss. We must be very understanding and compassionate as we embrace this subject, because under the banner of Christianity, Jewish people have been killed and have suffered tremendously. Again, though the subject of the coming chastening of God's people can be a difficult one, it's a necessary one. Why? Because the Bible says it will happen. It should propel us even more to share Jesus with as many as we can because you never know if the Lord will use you as a means to reach one of God's people, the Jews! What a privilege! RECIPE FOR DISASTER: Studying church history before you've thoroughly studied and have a deep knowledge and understanding of all the doctrines of Holy Scripture (2 Timothy 3:16-17). The only, the real HIS-STORY you need is Genesis to Revelation! Once a disciple has studied the contents of Holy Writ, it is doubtful that he will desire to waste God's time studying un-inspired church history which is a mixed bag as in contrast with the very Word of God which is given by His inspiration (2 Timothy 3:16-17).HOMEPAGE: https://safeguardyoursoul.comSUPPORT: https://safeguardyoursoul.com/donate/STORE: https://store.safeguardyoursoul.com/ABOUT: https://safeguardyoursoul.com/about/email Todd: info@safeguardyoursoul.comBackground Music by: Thad Fiscella https://www.thadfiscella.com/

During today's conversation on Back Porch Theology we're going to tackle all things theophany – which is a form of divine revelation where God's miraculous presence is made visible and recognizable to mere humans. Some of the most familiar theophanies in Holy Writ are the flaming topiary through which God affirmed and called a stuttering Moses to lead Israel out of captivity, as well as the cloud by day and pillar of fire by night that accompanied the Israelites through the wilderness wanderings. However, we're going to focus on some really cool, less familiar theophanies today because there's loads of theological significance regarding the nature of our trinitarian God to glean from biblical theophanies and Christophanies – which are theophanies that have a human form – but they also have the capacity to spur our faith and fertilize some old-school awe over the fact that our Creator Redeemer loves us so much that He condescends to make Himself unmistakable to us. So please grab a cup of coffee and your Bible – unless you're driving or French-braiding your show horse's tail, of course – and come hang out on the porch with Alli, Dr. Howard and me. Hebrews 13:1 Here we are again, revisiting a topic that I know each one of you are only too familiar with. You say, Preacher, isn't there something else we can study besides this matter of love? Is there not some other treasure that you can unearth for us from Holy Writ? Brother, that's like saying, we've had enough of you mining for gold, isn't there something else you can unearth, like silver or tin, or a lump of iron or copper? Well, I can, but you do realise that these other metals whilst important are not to be compared with the precious worth of gold? As pertaining to that first commandment of importance, that “…royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself” (Jms. 2:8), it has no equal...no rival by which to compare. It stands in a league of its own, chief among the metals! Of all the many aspects of love, one could choose to look at, in this sermon we choose to look at the continuation of love seen in the exhortation given to the Hebrews, “Let brotherly love continue”.
Chuck Swindoll, with his trademark wit and clarity, introduces his study of Peter's first letter this way: "I find it interesting that Peter, as a disciple of Christ, is clearly the most popular of the twelve ... yet Peter, as a writer of Scripture, is not nearly as well known. "Too bad. His first letter offers wonderful hope to people who live in hurtful times. Without denying the reality of pain, he sets forth dynamic and trustworthy counsel that anyone—in any generation—would find reassuring. "Few individuals lived in tougher times. Christians were hated, mistreated, and driven from their homes. Martyrdom commonly occurred. Madman Nero was the ruler of the known world, and we don't need a rehearsal of his evil, corrupt reign. Whatever the hour, Christ as Lord. He has everything under control. And the old fisherman-turned-apostle provides confident counsel for all to believe." To lead us to a better understanding of this relatable and inspired text of Holy Writ we welcome Dr. Tim Miller. Dr. Miller currently serves as assistant professor of New Testament at Detroit Baptist Theological Seminary. He has two earned PhDs, the dissertation focus for latter was "Jesus in the First Epistle of Peter", so we're in capable and learned hands today as we seek to better understand that very epistle.
During today's conversation on Back Porch Theology, we're kicking off our “Sizzling Summer” series by getting up close and personal with an awesome chick whose job title is: biblical culturalist. Her training at Dallas Theological Seminary, coupled with her extensive boots-on-the-ground training in multiple Middle Eastern countries with world-renowned archeologists, historians and rabbis have honed her incredible gift of helping others better understand the historical, cultural and linguistic context of Scripture. Every single time I have the privilege of hanging out with this particular professor, I not only learn something new about God and His Word, I find myself falling even more in love with Jesus! There is a crying need today for sin to be viewed in the light of God's law and gospel, so that its exceeding sinfulness may be demonstrated, and the dark depths of human depravity exposed by the teaching of Holy Writ, that we may learn what is connoted by those fearful words -dead in trespasses and sins.- The grand object of the Bible is to make God known to us, to portray man as he appears in the eyes of his Maker, and to show the relation of one to the other. It is therefore the business of His servants not only to declare the divine character and perfections, but also to delineate the original condition and apostasy of man, as well as the divine remedy for his ruin.
Where do we go in the extremely acute sorrows or the turmoil of our souls? But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the surpassing greatness of the power may be of God and not from ourselves; we are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed… Luke 18:1 Now He was telling them a parable to show that at all times they ought to pray and not to lose heart… Praying through Holy Writ is an exercise that leads to a sanctifying, peace-giving, courage-increasing, soul-satisfying communion with Holy God. Today's episode is obedience to the leading of the Holy Spirit and a fearfully submitted example; praying through 2 Corinthians 4:7-16, Romans 16:25-27. May God put His seal on our prayers. And since He bids me seek His face, Believe His Word and trust His grace, I'll cast on Him my every care, And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!" The Bible is the God-breathed Word of God. The Authorized Version is the Holy Writ. You can trust the Word of God.
Jesus spoke in parables. Is Jesus still speaking in parables? The obvious answer is, we just read the parables this morning, and we take the reading of scripture in the context of liturgy as Jesus directly speaking to us, so we have to say yes, He is still speaking in parables. But beyond and past the Holy Writ, is he speaking to you in parables, in your life? Is he speaking to the world in parables? Or has he given up parables? Maybe he's given up parables and gone on to more straightforward means of communication in your life. That shouldn't be too difficult of a question to answer. If he does still speak to us in parables, do we get what he's trying to say to us? Or are we left scratching our heads? Does the seed of the word of christ penetrate the soil of our heart? Does it take root? Or does it get swept away by the wind, snatched up by the birds? Do we get additional information from Christ? Well, if we're left in the dark, which we so often are, there's a reason for it.
We may feel like Job sometimes, but we are not Job. That righteous man from Uz had no Scriptures - he would be the first writer of Holy Writ. He saw a distant Redeemer but didn't have any details about Jesus. And of course he didn't have the Spirit of Jesus living inside him. We likely have more encouraging friends, too! We have it a lot better than Job, even when we think we might have it worse. We've skipped to Chapter 28 for the second half of Jim's message, God Will Redeem Me. We're taking a break from uploading shows from The Vault of the Ancients to bring you 2 episodes that aired in early 2022. Here we converse with Prof. Humberto Casanova, a Chilean theologian. Mr. Casanova has impeccable credentials in the school of Reformed theology. But his thinking as taken a turn toward the more progressive end of Christianity. In his book Imagining God he examines the poetry, mythology and metaphor that permeate The Bible. While to some this kind of thinking somehow "diminishes" the status of Holy Writ, for others, a book like this can be a lifeline to a refreshed faith. Enjoy.
On this Thanksgiving Day episode, Bud turns to the Puritan Thomas Manton for the reading of an excerpt of his sermon about the Christian's special duty of giving thanks. Drawn from an exposition of Psalm 119:62, Manton emphasizes the necessity for the Christian to be much in giving thanks and giving praise to God. Manton's sermon No. LXX is sourced from Volume 7 of the 22 volume The Works of Thomas Manton published by The Banner of Truth Trust. Charles Spurgeon, in his collection "The Treasury Of David," says of Psalm 119: "This sacred ode is a little Bible, the Scriptures condensed, a mass of Bible, Holy Writ rewritten in holy emotions and actions. Blessed are they who can read and understand these saintly aphorism; they shall find golden apples in this true Hesperides, and come to reckon that this Psalm, like the whole Scripture which it praises, is a pearl island, or, better still, a garden of sweet flowers." What has modern religion done for communities of color? What has religion done for the modern world? We have been taught to become religious atheists or religious pagans, in fact we have been taught to not do anything that the bible actually teaches. The Forefront Radio explores the infiltration of dirty pastors, priests, and monks. The antichrists (plural) are these false religions that have not taught the descendants of slaves that they are in fact the lost tribes of Israel. The relationship between modern religion and the brainwashing of the descendants of the diaspora is explained using Holy Writ and Articles. As well as the destruction of these false prophets in the Bible that God forewarned us of to remember to come back the the covenant of the Israelites. https://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5unVKzA9LfI French admit church abused over quarter million victims. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/religion/nearly-1-700-priests-clergy-accused-sex-abuse-are-unsupervised-n1062396 Please support the show. https://cash.app/$aphiellevi --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/c4challenge/message

William Lane Craig's article on the historical Adam is set to make a splash, even before his book on the matter publishes. While he affirms a historical Adam, he gets there through the natural sciences rather than the text of Holy Writ—choosing instead to mythologize most of Genesis 1-11. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

We all know the verse of scripture that says many are called, but few are chosen. (Matthew 22:14) But have you ever really thought about what that means for you? Are you called? Have you been chosen? Let's find the biblical meaning to these terms within the context of Holy Writ, with guest Charles Hall. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/apostolictheory/support
"There is scarce any expression in Holy Writ which has given more offense than this...And whosoever 'preaches perfection,' [and] asserts that it is attainable in this life, run great hazard of being accounted by them worse than a heathen or a publican." These opening lines to John Wesley's sermon indicate that Christian Perfection is a widely misunderstood doctrine, even though it is at the heart of the Scriptures. Understanding what this term means is essential to understanding the key emphasis in Methodism. In this episode, Bob Kaylor unpacks Wesley's explanation of "perfection" and how it is audaciously optimistic about what the grace of God can do in the life of the believer. Fr. Apostolos Hill discusses the Gospel reading from Matthew 6 and the Sermon on the Mount. He conducts a brief overview from Holy Writ of the pitfalls of money and our pursuit of it and that Jesus didn't say we "mustn't" or "ought not" serve God and Mammon, but that it cannot be done. He also refers to the writings of Solomon, Isaiah, and Jeremiah who each underscored how oppression of the poor invited the correction of God which saw Israel captive in Babylon for 70 years.
