Menneskenes nærmeste nålevende slektning er sjimpansene, men for 40.000 år siden kunne vi i Europa treffe på en annen menneskeart, neandertalerne, og til og med få barn med dem. Dagens gjester har nettopp skrevet en bok om dette gåtefulle folket. De var kanskje ikke så primitive som mange har trodd? Vi snakker om hvordan de så ut, bodde, jaktet på mammuter og deres verktøy og kunst. Og til slutt spekulerer vi på hvorfor de forsvant.

Ved innføring av folkeskolen i 1889 beskrev embetsmenn den norske allmuen som i hovedsak uopplyste analfabeter. Nyere forskning har imidlertid vist at lesing var både vanligere og viktigere blant den jevne norske befolkningen enn hva man tidligere har trodd. Et av de beste eksemplene på dette er vekkelsesbevegelsen ledet av Hans Nielsen Hauge (1771–1824), som produserte og distribuerte minst 200 000 trykte tekster til en befolkning på 800 000. Men hva leste folk, og hvordan? Litteraturviter og redaktør Trygve Riiser Gundersen foredrar om fortidas lesekultur og haugianerne som et lesende fellesskap. Flyktningkrisen høsten 2015 satte Sverige på hodet og ble en alvorlig utfordring for landets selvbilde. Bjarne Riiser Gundersen (f. 1974) er utdannet idéhistoriker, tidligere journalist i Morgenbladet og underviser i journalistikk ved Høgskulen i Volda. Hans forrige bok, Da postmodernismen kom til Norge, ble nominert til både Brageprisen og Kritikerprisen som beste sakprosabok i 2016.
