In this episode, hosts Kevin Palmieri and Alan Lazaros talk with the retired mixed martial artist Kenny Florian about his fighting in the UFC and how it changed his life. He also shared the lessons he learned from his life experiences, his fights, his relationship with discipline, his near-death experience, and everything in between. You are surely going to be inspired so make sure you tune in. Kenny's athletic roots are in soccer, where he would play at Boston College. Though soccer was his first love, he eventually found himself in a gym training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). This transition from soccer to BJJ, and mixed martial arts as a whole, transformed his life.Kenny received his BJJ Blackbelt in 5 years from Roberto Maia. After winning multiple BJJ and grappling tournaments, he went on to compete against some of the best fighters in the emerging sport of MMA.His gas tank never approached Empty. Kenny's footwork was as remarkable as his razor elbows. These skills, Florian says, can be attributed to his time playing soccer. Though he was fighting above his best weight and pushing thirty years old, Florian performed exceptionally well. In 2021, Kenny was named as a color commentator for the Professional Fighters League, which is the first MMA organization in which individual athletes compete in a regular season, post-season and championship. The PFL is broadcast in 160 countries.Kenny's analytical skills are also showcased on Discovery's highly rated BattleBots series. In addition, he can be heard on the Anik & Florian weekly podcast, which covers the latest happenings in the MMA world. He was featured in the tv series "Kingdom” and had a supporting role in the movie "Embattled."Catch up with Kenny at:Website: https://kennyflorianmartialarts.com/IG: https://www.instagram.com/kennyflorian/YT: https://www.youtube.com/c/KennyFlorianGroup coaching details: https://nextleveluniverse.com/group-coaching/We love connecting with you guys! Today on the show I have the honor to engage in conversation with the 4th degree eligible BJJ black belt Stephen Whittier. Stephen is one of the most decorated martial arts instructors in the country, he is one of only a handful of head coaches with Straight Blast Gym International (under SBG founder Matt Thornton) as well as the organization's Director. He is also the South Coast region's highest-ranking instructor in both Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (under New England's senior ranked black belt, Roberto Maia) and Muay Thai kickboxing (under Sityodtong USA director, Mark DellaGrotte). In 2018, he became only the 4th trainer ever to earn the rank of Red Monkgol in Sitydtong Muay Thai. In addition, he has earned black belts and instructor ranks in a number of martial arts disciplines over decades of study and has trained a broad range of students and athletes – from local, state, and federal law enforcement to multiple UFC competitors. Due to his parallel background as a former University lecturer and consultant, Stephen brings a unique and deeply analytical perspective to his martial arts and business instruction. He also runs 40 Plus BJJ which is dedicated to the unique tactical and technical needs of Jiu-Jitsu students and instructors 40 and up. Stephen truly is a renaissance man and deep thinker as I researched and spoke to the man I quickly came to this conclusion both by seeing his vast body of work, experience, and products available as well as his systems thinking approach to almost everything. If you are a practitioner or BJJ business owner I think you will gain much inspiration and more importantly immediate value out of listening to Stephens's story and ever-evolving perspectives. It was both a joy and honor to speak to Mr. Whittier and I hope this is the first of many conversations we eventually have.
