The Professional Fighters League began 2024 with a ton of questions and momentum following their acquisition of Bellator. Less than halfway through the year, the perception of the organization is in a much different place — and more so after a week of bad PR, most notably due to Donn Davis' comments about Kayla Harrison. On an all-new edition of Heck of a Morning, MMA Fighting's Mike Heck reacts to Davis' comments about Harrison, multiple fighters calling out the promotion for different reasons, Gegard Mousasi threatening legal action before getting released a day later, and the lack of buzz amongst the MMA community. The panel thoroughly examined the hottest topics in the fight world in the latest Ringside Report MMA show episode. From Conor McGregor's surprising announcement to Jamal Hill's electrifying knockout, the show was brimming with insights and analysis. The hosts, Dave Simon and Fred Garcia, alongside the frequently disconnected AJ D'Alesio, confidently shared their unique perspectives and predictions. Key Takeaways Conor McGregor's upcoming fight against Michael Chandler is a significant event in the MMA calendar. Jamal Hill's impressive knockout win over Khalil Rountree Jr. has solidified his status as a rising star, but his quick return to the octagon raises concerns. Islam Makhachev's dominant performance against Dustin Poirier has cemented his position as a lightweight champion, but his confidence could be a potential weakness. The PFL continues to gain momentum in the MMA world and its Gegard Mousasi problem. The Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen boxing match generates buzz, but some believe a jiu-jitsu match would be more compelling. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdlSs4mVW5Y Watch the episode on YouTube above or listen to the audio podcast below. McGregor's Return to the Octagon The night's biggest news was Conor McGregor's revelation of his upcoming fight against Michael Chandler. This announcement has sent shockwaves through the MMA community, with speculation already running rampant about how this fight will play out. The Ringside Report crew broke down the potential strategies of both fighters, offering their predictions and analysis. Hill's Knockout and Makhachev's Reign The panel also discussed Jamal Hill's stunning first-round knockout victory over Khalil Rountree Jr., solidifying his position as a rising star in the light heavyweight division. Dave expressed concern over Hill's quick return to the octagon after a recent knockout, while Fred saw the appeal of fighting on a high-profile card like Conor McGregor's. Poster for UFC 303: Will it be Conor McGregor's last stand UFC 302: Islam Makhachev vs. Dustin Poirier The conversation then turned to Islam Makhachev's dominant win over Dustin Poirier, further cementing his status as a lightweight champion to be reckoned with. While all three hosts acknowledged Makhachev's skill, Dave voiced concerns about the champion's perceived cockiness and potential to overlook opponents. Fred countered, emphasizing Makhachev's undeniable talent and the strategic advantage his wrestling poses against Poirier's striking. Placing your bets? Use our link at bet99.ringsidereport.net Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen: A Trilogy in the Making Boxing in Brazil The hosts also dove into the upcoming boxing match between MMA legends Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen in Brazil. Dave and Fred expressed excitement for the event, particularly due to the nostalgia and history between the two fighters. However, Fred questioned Sonnen's decision to box Silva, given Anderson's superior striking skills and experience in professional boxing. In his characteristically choppy manner, AJ advocated for a jiu-jitsu match instead, highlighting the unique appeal of grappling contests. PFL Goobles Up Bellator Other Hot Topics In addition to these major stories, the Ringside Report touched on a variety of other topics: PFL's Growth: The panel discussed the Professional Fighters League's (PFL) rise and its efforts to rid itself of Gegard Mousasi's Bellator contract, highlighting PFL's unique format and growing popularity. Pro Wrestling Crossover: The show concluded with a brief look at the upcoming pro wrestling events, showcasing the intersection between MMA and the world of sports entertainment. Conclusion This episode of the Ringside Report was a must-watch for any MMA fan. We'll see how this looks/feels—please let me know if there's any weirdness or undesirable side-effects on your end.UN warns that hundreds of thousands in Southeast Asia have been roped into online scamsSummary: The UN human rights office has released a report indicating that at least 120,000 people in Myanmar and about 100,000 in Cambodia have been forced into conducting online scams by criminal gangs.Context: These gangs seem to be targeting migrants and often lure their victims with false recruitment communications, implying that they would be hired for real jobs, only to then lock them into scam-related labor, preventing them from leaving through use of torture, sexual violence, detention, and other sorts of coercion; this parallels international concerns related to so-called “pig butchering” schemes where victims are fleeced by (often, but not exclusively) supposed women on dating and social media sites, but these supposed women are actually men and women being held against their will by gangs, forcing them to conduct these sorts of grifts; in June, 2,700 of these forced workers were rescued in the Philippines, and the Philippines, Thailand, and Laos have been flagged as other destinations or transit sites for people being trafficked in this way.—The Associated PressOne Sentence News is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.NASA officials sound alarm over future of the Deep Space NetworkSummary: NASA officials have said that the agency's Deep Space Network, which is made up of antennas in California, Spain, and Australia that are used to maintain contact with all sorts of space missions, is straining under the weight of all the communications signals it's managing.Context: The DSN is currently maintaining contact with about 40 missions that, lacking the Network, wouldn't be functional, and another 40-plus missions will be added to the Network over the next decade, nearly doubling the amount of traffic it will have to deal with despite already being overburdened, at times by as much as 40%; those running the Network are also worried about the increasing size of the communications it's juggling, as the hardware being sent into space becomes more sophisticated and the transmissions they send to Earth grow from bytes into gigabytes—everyone understandably wanting 8k images and videos, but each upsizing of resolution dramatically increasing the load placed on these antennas; all of which means there are signals that the global scientific community might benefit from that are being lost or delayed; earlier-planned efforts to build-out the network are currently five years behind schedule and will cost more than $700 million to complete, and new communication stations that will be placed around the world and dedicated to lunar missions won't be operational until 2027.—Ars TechnicaVisa and Mastercard prepare to raise credit card feesSummary: Two of the largest credit card companies in the US are planning to increase the fees they charge merchants in October and April, which some estimates suggest could result in an additional half-billion dollars in fees each year.Context: Merchants pay to accept credit cards every time a customer uses one, that fee going to the card company, but they also pay for using credit card networks, these latter fees typically going to the bank that issued the card; US merchants paid Visa and Mastercard about $93 billion in fees in 2022—which was up from just $33 billion in 2012—and it's likely this fee-bump will result in higher prices for some goods at some vendors, though Congress recently introduced legislation that would allow merchants to process these cards using other networks (which is something they can already do for debit cards) and that could lower the fees they have to pay to process card-swipes if the law is passed.—The Wall Street JournalChinese oil giant Sinopec recently announced that gasoline demand in China is expected to peak this year, which is two years earlier than the company's earlier estimate; this change is being attributed to the takeoff of the electric vehicle market in the country, and it's surprising in part because Sinopec benefits from a robust gasoline market—so if anything they're incentivized to underplay risks to this market (implying that this must be a significant, obvious (if you're looking at the numbers) change, if they're making this call).—Bloomberg$100 millionSize of investment by Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund in the US's Professional Fighters League—a mixed martial arts entity that represents the country's newest foray into entertainment-related assets.Alongside this investment, the representatives announced that the League would be creating a regional (Middle East and North Africa) tournament in 2024, and that this new venture would be headquartered in Saudi Arabia.—Financial TimesTrust Click Get full access to One Sentence News at onesentencenews.substack.com/subscribe

Welcome back to THE Sports Law Podcast! We keep you up to date on everything at the intersection of sports and the law! Dan Lust is joined by Mike and Tarun as well as guest Andrew Bua, who is an attorney with Wasserman. Vince McMahon is back and issues immediately arise. (4:47) McMahon had initially stepped down as CEO last summer amidst allegations of misconduct and his daughter Stephanie McMahon and her husband WWE start Triple-H have taken over. Recently, Vince has returned and is now being accused of voter misuse and stacking the board in his favor. Vince was also accused of timing his return with the WWE media rights negotiations. WWE shareholders have filed a class-action lawsuit claiming breach of fiduciary duty against Vince. Jake Paul signs major deal with the Professional Fighters League. (33:44) The PFL is an MMA league that has been gaining popularity for their season-style fighting schedule. Jake Paul, and business partner Nakisa Bidarian (former CFO of the UFC), are equity shareholders in the PFL and created the Super Fight division. This new division is to encourage fighters with an already big draw to compete in this division and the fighters receive 50% of the pay-per-view (PPV). Fighter pay has been a long-standing issue with the UFC and Dana White. Many UFC fighters have called out Dana for better shares of PPV and Jake Paul has also criticized White. USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter no longer had a contract with the team following report of domestic violence. (45:23) A report was provided to USSF officials that Berhalter had kicked his now-wife over 30 years ago in a bar. This allegation was confirmed by Berhalter and his wife, in that it was back in 1991 when they were dating. Berhalter released a statement apologized for his actions and his wife stated that she has forgiven her husband. The interesting part of this story is the person who told the USSF was Danielle Renya, who is the mother of Giovanni Reyna and the wife of soccer legend Claudio Reyna. The Reynas and Berhalters have known each other since college and apparently the Reynas were not happy with the amount of playing time that their son received during the world cup. There were apparent behavior issues with Gio during the world cup that Berhalter had addressed the media about, another thing the Reynas were most likely unhappy about. Moving forward we will see if a tortious interference lawsuit arises. Dan and Conlan are back with the betting segment sponsored by Bettor Edge.
