http://www.JudoIsLife.net - In this hard-hitting video, we dive deep into the ongoing debate between Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) and the Ecological Approach in martial arts, especially in combat sports like Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). While the Ecological Approach has gained massive popularity for its real-world readiness and adaptability, many coaches and practitioners are fooled by randomness, mistaking chaotic "play" for genuine proficiency. The truth is, the Ecological Approach should always be treated as a secondary phase, only applied after mastering foundational skills through Direct Instruction. Skipping this critical step leads to athletes who lack technical precision and crumble under pressure. We also explore how BJJ's ground-based nature allows athletes to "play their way" into a perceived level of skill, giving a false sense of competence. Unlike sports that demand high kinesthetic awareness and technical precision from the start, BJJ can make practitioners feel proficient without truly mastering the fundamentals.

Send us a textHow do we unlock the true potential of authentic masculinity? In part 2 of our conversation with Roy Shaw,  we explore the deep spiritual and practical connections between submission, spiritual combat, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Drawing from Scripture, the wisdom of the Church, and personal journeys, James and Father Dom tackle the challenges men face today. Discover why Ephesians 5 calls men to lead and love like Christ and how lessons from BJJ mirror the virtues required to win the spiritual battle for our families and communities. Hear powerful insights on the importance of complementarity in marriage, breaking generational sin, and the transformative power of submission—not as weakness but as strength.Takeaways:- Submission as Leadership: True submission, as seen in Ephesians 5, involves men dying to themselves to serve their families and communities with love and leadership. This reflects Christ's love for the Church.- The Power of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: BJJ teaches discipline, humility, and perseverance—critical virtues for spiritual warfare. "Learning to tap" mirrors the need for surrender to God's will.- Breaking Generational Sin: Addressing intergenerational sin and spiritual strongholds is vital for protecting our families from hidden spiritual battles.- Authentic Masculinity: Embracing strength tempered by meekness leads to righteous leadership and inspires those around us to follow Christ.Food for Thought: "A man on fire for God will stand at the gate, ensuring Satan has no entry into his home.""Submission isn't about losing power; it's about unleashing the strength God has given you to serve.""Marriage isn't 50/50—it's 100/100. True love is about out-giving each other.""BJJ isn't just a martial art—it's a theological exercise in humility and perseverance." "You will know the character of a man by the countenance of his wife."Call to Action:If this episode challenged or inspired you, don't keep it to yourself—share it with a fellow brother in Christ! In this episode, Brandon and I talk about his plan to get Jiu-Jitsu into the Olympics in 2028. Brandon has recently been contacted by United World Grappling and USA Grappling to help get Jiu-Jitsu into the Olympics through the official qualification process.  Last year, Brandon's company the AGF hosted qualifying tournaments to send BJJ athletes to the United World Grappling championships in Kazakhstan. The hope is that if enough attention can be generated around the world championships, then we can get Jiu-Jitsu into the Olympics in 2028 by showing that there is a lot of interest in United World Grappling. For this to happen, we need to get behind the United World Grappling organization and support their world championships to show the Olympic committee that there is enough popular support around the world to support BJJ in the 2028 Olympics.  Brandon also details the rules of the United World Grappling competitions and why the rules at the Olympic Games would not prevent other organizations (like ADCC or the IBJJF) from continuing to use their own rules sets.  Share this conversation with someone so we can get more support for what United World Grappling is trying to do!
