We've c*m back for a brand new season AND How C*m's Birthday, (born Christmas Day, 2017) To celebrate we are talking all things Sabrina Carpenter with drag queen and pop-culture aficionado Poutine Levine and our beloved Robyn Kennedy. We talk about Sabrina's unapologetic horniness, the ability and freedom to express sexuality through pop music, and the hurdles that women in the music industry have to face; not to mention how much harder it is when there's beef between two icons -- what happened to women supporting women? We cover everything from Britney and Christina in the 1990s-2000s to Olivia Rodrigo and Taylor Swift today, the rise of Chappell Roan and other queer icons in the music industry (and get some good new recs) and finally, Rob gives us a rundown of her current relationship which has been long and lovely as opposed to previous short and sour ones. Welc*m back + a happy horny holiday to you all! Welcome to a very special installment of Queer Thinking – Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras are celebrating our 45th anniversary in 2023 and over this four-part series we're taking you on a journey through time as we tell the full story of one of the largest pride movements in the world. From the protest of 1978, to over 1 million event attendees at the first WorldPride in the Southern Hemisphere and everything in between – we're unpacking all the moments that made Sydney Mardi Gras the force for pride, progress and community it is today. First stop: the 70s. Triana is joined by 78er legends Robyn Kennedy and Karl Zlotkowski who share their experiences of being LGBTQIA+ in 1970s Australia. They recall a Sydney on the brink of transformation in the lead-up to the very first Sydney Mardi Gras on 24 June 1978. The events that followed set off a chain of change that still continues today. Queer Thinking is produced on the sacred lands of the Boon Wurrung people of Kulin Nation and will discuss events that took place on Gadigal, Cammeraygal, Bidigal, Darug and Dharawal lands. We'd like to extend our acknowledgement to all lands on which you, our listeners, are tuning in from and pay our respects to Elders past and present, with a special acknowledgment to the Rainbow Elders – part of the longest-continuous culture in the world. Sovereignty has never been ceded. This Always was, always will be Aboriginal land. For our Aboriginal or Torres Strait listeners, please know this podcast may mention the names of the people who are no longer with us.
The evolution and construction of any theatre is eternally fascinating. Elements of collaboration, persistence, intellect, resilience, humour, patience and invention are required - the creative process is unleashed as players and creatives forge forward to arrive at Opening Night - delivering a theatrical ‘baby' ready to be invested, received and judged by the anticipating audience. This journey is much more heightened in the construction of a new play - CAMP by Elias Jamieson Brown, commissioned by Robyn Kennedy and directed by Kate Gaul - is a play with historical and political elements - chronicling the rise of a movement in Australia. The birth of LGBTQI rights and the subsequent advocacy it ignited for further human rights at home and globally, is a salient story demanding to be told to an audience ignorant of what has gone before - but also to an audience who forged that movement and who hopefully will find further and deserved recognition in this theatrical treatment. The play is being served at World Pride - a gathering of the global tribe in Sydney - where the reverberations of the movements early days can now be rightly celebrated - alongside a recognition of what is still left to be accomplished. How will this play be received? What does it take to build a production from the ground floor? Who are the players tasked with this responsibility? In this episode of the STAGES podcast, we chart the development of the play CAMP, speaking with the creatives and artists involved and examine that tumultuous time in history (not that far away) when the story of CAMP was born. The STAGES podcast is available to access and subscribe from Spotify and Apple podcasts. Or from wherever you access your favourite podcasts. A conversation with creatives about craft and career. Born and raised in Worcester, Massachusetts, Senator Kennedy graduated from Holy Name High School and got her bachelor's degree from Assumption University. Her internship at Congressman Jim McGovern's office provided her with her first exposure to the world of politics. After graduating, she got involved in his re-election campaign as well as the one to elect Ed Augustus to the State Senate. Her affection for the community they were creating grew as a result of door-to-door canvassing, getting to know the locals, and developing relationships. In 2006, after devoting months of hard work to getting Governor Deval Patrick and Lt. Governor Tim Murray elected, she stepped into her first role on Beacon Hill as a Deputy Director of Appointments. From there she went on to the Lt. Governor's Office as a Director of Policy and Interagency Initiatives, then a Deputy Chief of Staff, and a Deputy Assistant Secretary for Children, Youth, and Families. She gained greater knowledge about the effort required to provide services for the citizens of our Commonwealth every day. She is devoted to making sure that no parent in our community has to choose between employment and childcare and that every child in our community has access to high-quality, affordable early education and care. She is working for these objectives as a newly elected senator. She also recognizes the long-standing regulations that have made it challenging to find and maintain housing, as well as the reality of how little new housing has been constructed in previous years and to ensure that everyone has access to affordable homes. Episode Highlights: How did you get into politics? (2:03) Working on several campaigns. (5:23) The importance of having a strong team around you. (8:12) Focusing on the care economy. (13:02) Why do you stick to one child? (14:57) Advocacy is so important. (19:27) It's not just about the pay but the respect. (21:38) It takes the entire village to make a change. (27:40) Ladies run for office. (29:42) Key Takeaway: "Run for office. If you have any interest in this field, We are frequently socialized to believe that we are too average or that we lack the necessary skills, and we've become so accustomed to hearing that we're not good enough and that someone else is better. However, there is a lot that women can contribute and bring to the table." Resources: Twitter Instagram Website
Robyn Kennedy, activist and author on the books that mean the most to her.
The Pride movement in Australia began with the founding of the Campaign Against Moral Persecution (CAMP) in Sydney in 1970. A new book, CAMP: Australia's pioneer homosexual rights activists by 78ers Robyn Kennedy and Robyn Plaister, brings to life the vital role of CAMP activists. They inspired and initiated a social movement that continues to this day. In the book, CAMP members from across Australia talk about their experiences and the life-changing support CAMP offered at a time when lesbians and gay men were despised by much of society. Robyn and I discuss how it feels to be a woman on a daily basis in today's world, from everyday harassment and sexism, and also more severe incidents such as physical and sexual assault… We look at the dangers faced by women, big and small every time they leave the house, and what men can do to help, both through their own behaviours and interventions… And we discuss the damaging impact that pornography can have, particularly in influencing the behaviours of younger men in today's society. And as always, we cover plenty more. www.that-guy.co.uk Tickets for Blethered LIVE at St Luke's Glasgow: gigss.co/blethered Contact: seanmcdonald.podcast@gmail.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/seanmcdonald01
