The Bureau of Queer Art, Contemporary Queer and Allied Artists from Art Gallery Studios Mexico City

Through sensuality, survival, and sharp-witted grace, David Jester paints what too many won't even say out loud. In this powerful episode, Jester reflects on art as confession, HIV survivorship, aging in a queer body, and the brutal cost of being visible. His canvases don't perform—they speak, reminding us what it means to be seen and still stand tall.Recorded in conjunction with Pride NOT Permission and the 50 Postcards project, this conversation dives into the emotional core of Jester's latest work: paintings that don't seek resolution, but insist on truth.

Welcome back to The Bureau of Queer Art podcast. In this special rerelease, we revisit our conversation with Australian artist Jessica Ledwich, recorded during her transformative residency at Casa Lu in Mexico City. Known for her provocative and visually striking work, Jessica took a bold leap from the controlled world of fashion photography into the chaotic beauty of CDMX's street food culture. This episode explores how the sensory overload of Mexico's vibrant markets, layered with her own history of crafting intimate, erotic compositions, led to a new body of work—playful, political, and pulsing with life. We discuss desire, consumption, and the riotous textures that defined her street banner series.Whether you're discovering her work for the first time or revisiting it with fresh eyes, this episode offers an intimate look at an artist unafraid to challenge boundaries and embrace transformation.

Jack Halberstam, the author of The Queer Art of Failure, is someone I've wanted to talk to since I first started this podcast. As a professor and scholar, Jack has dedicated his career to dissecting the often-radical undertones of popular cultural media. Together, we look at how animated kids' movies like Shrek, Finding Nemo, and Chicken Run offer critiques of a system that fails so many of us. We also talk about Jack's experience as a queer child in England, since where we come from always informs where we go. It's a wide-ranging conversation that calls into question the very essence of this podcast, as we examine what it means to be a failure in this world — and why Samuel Beckett's phrase “fail better” isn't all that inspiring when read in context.  Follow me on Instagram at @davidduchovny. Jasmine Holmes brings her Southern heritage and personal journey into the spotlight with Tchoupitoulas, her latest work debuting in Efímero at Centro Cultural Juan Rulfo. In this bold mixed-media piece, Holmes reclaims her identity as a Black woman from the American South, challenging societal norms around gender and femininity. Drawing on Southern traditions, Mardi Gras imagery, and cultural pride, Tchoupitoulas is a vibrant reflection of self-empowerment and transformation. Holmes's use of beads, collard greens, and symbolic figures invites viewers to explore the deeper narratives of Southern Black culture, gender expression, and personal rebirth. We're excited to release a bonus interview with Alonso Yañez, available in Spanish with English subtitles, just days before the premiere of his latest work En el laberinto (Into the Maze), created during his online residency with The Bureau of Queer Art. Alonso Yañez's latest creation, Laberinto, draws viewers into a mesmerizing journey through the complex intersections of life, death, and identity. Featured in the Efímero | Vida, Muerte, Arte exhibition, this piece serves as a vivid metaphor for the corridors of human desires, societal expectations, and the unrelenting cycle of life and death. The labyrinth itself becomes a symbol of our personal struggles—an intricate web of decisions, desires, and experiences that shape who we are, while also trapping us within their patterns. Yañez, a participant in The Bureau of Queer Art's online residency program, explores this tension between personal transformation and the systems that bind us. The corridors of his labyrinth are not mere walls but are formed by layers of stories, emotions, and histories. As viewers engage with the piece, they are asked to confront the mazes in their own lives—their own cycles of rebirth and loss, freedom and constraint. Yañez's work doesn't offer a straightforward escape but instead challenges us to find meaning in the journey itself. Crafted during an intense period of creative development, Laberinto merges visual poetry with deep philosophical exploration. His work becomes both a reflection of our inner worlds and a guide, gently pushing us to recognize the beauty, chaos, and inevitable struggle of existence. His careful use of materials and composition invites us to look deeper, beyond the immediate layers of complexity, to uncover what's hidden in the turns and twists of the maze. As we approach the premiere of this new piece, we invite you to experience Alonso Yañez's unique vision firsthand. The bonus interview offers an intimate glimpse into his process, thoughts, and the inspirations behind his work, enriching our understanding of this powerful new addition to Efímero. Don't miss the chance to explore Laberinto—a thought-provoking visual journey that, like life itself, offers as many questions as answers. We also want to offer our eternal gratitude to Xuan Rios who continues to help support this project with his video talents @xuanrios (IG)

The Bureau of Queer Art, Contemporary Queer and Allied Artists from Art Gallery Studios Mexico City

Welcome to a special episode of The Bureau of Queer Art. In this episode, we dive into the archives to revisit an insightful conversation with visiting artist Stefan Hagen, who participated in our Foto(grafia) 2021 group exhibition in Mexico City. Stefan's work, part of his series Encompassing, brings a unique perspective to photography, exploring the relationship between time, space, and the limitations of our perception. Stefan's process is both meditative and experimental. He leaves his cameras alone, allowing them to record time and space as they unfold, independent of his presence. Whether he's walking away, sleeping, or simply letting time pass, the cameras capture what they can—defined by the limitations of the optics and the movements of celestial bodies. Yet, as Stefan poignantly notes, even the most sophisticated equipment can't fully encapsulate the vastness of space and time. His work, like *Pilot Peak 1*, evokes a sense of the sublime, depicting places of historical significance, such as where the Donner Party struggled through the mud in 1846, reminding us that some spaces are larger than we can ever fully comprehend. As we look back on this impactful project, we're excited to announce that we are now accepting applications for Foto(grafia) 2025. This annual group exhibition will take place during Art Week CDMX in February 2025, one of the most vibrant and international art weeks in Mexico City. In addition, we're seeking an elite group of artists for our online residency incubator, designed to prepare artists for solo and group exhibitions on platforms like Artsy, and in art fairs and other prominent events during Art Week CDMX 2025. These intimate groups will meet once a week over 12 weeks, providing an intensive, collaborative environment for artists to refine their work and prepare for these significant exhibitions. For more information and to apply, visit TheBureauOfQueerArt.com. Don't miss this opportunity to be part of an extraordinary journey of artistic growth and international exposure.

In October 2021, under our previous name PRPG.mx, we hosted an insightful exhibition titled "Perspectivas Humanas." This show featured seven artists across six spaces, exploring the human form, perceptions, experiences, and storytelling methods. These narratives aimed to comfort, remind, educate, and unite us as humans, emphasizing our shared experiences and the diversity of voices in the art world. Visitors, referred to as "the experimenters," were invited to navigate the gallery spaces and engage deeply with the art, challenging their views on discourse, culture, and the pivotal moments in history. One of the standout contributors was Ximena Alarcón, whose provocative sculptures highlighted the limitations and lack of reciprocity in intimacy within a male-dominated world. By adopting a feminist perspective, Alarcón encouraged viewers to re-evaluate their own viewpoints—sometimes drawing them into voyeurism, at other times into a metaphorical blindness, and often challenging them with deceptive stereotypes. Her works, featuring a mix of reflective surfaces and wood, were designed to provoke self-assessment and facilitate conversations on entrenched societal beliefs. Now known as Art Gallery Studios, we are revisiting this impactful exhibition through a special feature on our podcast. As a bonus episode, we present an interview with Ximena Alarcón, exploring her feminist approach and the themes that resonate throughout her body of work, including gender, social inequalities, racism, and empathy. This insightful discussion is available on your favorite podcast platform. Additionally, members of our exclusive Patreon community, "The Bureau of Queer Art," can access and download the show catalog as part of their support for our community. This initiative not only reflects on past achievements but also continues to foster a dialogue about the evolving narratives within contemporary art.

We meet curator and writer Gemma Rolls-Bentley to discuss her exciting new book Queer Art, recorded in front of a live audience at the Turner Contemporary in Margate.Gemma's debut book Queer Art; From Canvas to Club and the Spaces Between is out now. With nearly 200 artworks selected by leading LGBTQI+ curator Gemma Rolls-Bentley, this book mixes the high-brow with the low, gallery stalwarts with Instagram stars, and the racy with the fabulous. This is a unique celebration of queer life – a must-have for the LGBTQI+ community, art lovers and anyone interested in the culture surrounding queer identity. The twentieth century saw key shifts for the LGBTQI+ community across the western world: from the Stonewall uprising to the first pride parades and homosexuality law reforms. The years following these milestone moments have seen queer life face new challenges, celebrations, injustices and liberations. As ever, this journey has been closely mapped by art and culture. Artists working across all mediums from painting, performance, digital and beyond have captured key moments, from the HIV/AIDS crisis and the rise of drag, to marriage equality and the fight for trans liberation.Gemma was born and raised in South Yorkshire. She spent her early years living on a farm and then in a village on the Yorkshire/Derbyshire border at the edge of Sheffield, where her parents still live. She left when she was 18 to go to Edinburgh University to study Maths & A.I. but graduated with a degree in Art History instead. When she moved to London to do an MA at the Courtauld Institute of Art she discovered that everyone in the art world was posh. She changed her surname to Rolls-Bentley on Facebook as a joke and it stuck. Gemma curated her first exhibition when she was a student in Edinburgh, a group show of fine art students in an abandoned travel agents. She's been curating ever since. She's spent almost two decades working passionately to champion diversity in the field. Curating exhibitions and building art collections internationally, her curatorial practice amplifies the work of female and queer artists as well as providing a platform for art that explores LGBTQ+ identity.Gemma is a creative consultant and advisor for brands, organisations, and cultural projects, in addition to teaching at numerous institutions including the Royal College of Art, the Glasgow School of Art, and Goldsmiths. She spent a decade working at the intersection of art and technology, holding positions of Chief Curator at Avant Arte and Curatorial Director at Artsy. Prior to that she spent 6 years working at Damien Hirst's studio, where she learned a lot about the art world (and what she wanted to help change). She co-chairs the board of trustees for the charity Queercircle, and sits on the Courtauld Association Committee. She was previously a trustee for Deptford X. In 2011, Gemma launched the arts arm of the East London Fawcett Group and ran their 2012-2013 Art Audit campaign.Recent curatorial projects include Tschabalala Self's first public art project at Coal Drops Yard in London, the Tom of Finland Art & Culture Festival, and the Brighton Beacon Collection, which is the largest permanent display of queer art in the UK. In 2023, she curated the group exhibition Dreaming of Home at Leslie Lohman Museum of Art in NYC, and she is the host of the museum's new podcast series.Follow @GemmaRollsBentley Hosted on Acast.
