In our second installment of Surviving the 90s, we're revisiting one of the hitmakers from the first half of the 80s - Billy Squier. Responsible for such hits as The Stroke, Lonely Is The Night, Everybody Wants You, My Kinda Lover, and Rock Me Tonite, to name a few, Squier was all over radio and early MTV. Albums like Don't Say No, Emotions in Motion, and Signs of Life each went Platinum, and while musical trends changed, Squier still managed radio airplay into the early 90s. But by 1998, he was done, releasing his final record, Happy Blue, an all acoustic affair. We revisit his greatest hits, his 90s releases, and try to determine if Billy Squier thrived, adapted, or died in the 90s.   Songs In This Episode Intro - The Stroke (from Don't Say No) 10:32 - 42nd Street by Piper (from self-titled) 17:41 - The Big Beat (from The Tale of the Tape) 28:19 - Rock Me Tonite (from Signs of Life) 38:28 - Young at Heart (from Creatures of Habit) 1:02:42 - Happy Blues (from Happy Blue) Outro - Angry (from Tell The Truth)   Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. In 1984, Billy Squire released a hugely successful single called Rock Me Tonite. In the burgeoning MTV era, music videos were inexorably linked to the featured singles. Squier later blamed the video for the downturn in his popularity. We ask – why? The Blasftrom crew dance around the issues of Hard Rock masculinity, music video direction, choreography, set dressing, war, politics and animal welfare. Welcome to Episode 198 I am out of town, so the gang isn't together. As the show title states, I hope this show turns out more like the shirt ripping in the Howling II credits rather than the shirt ripping in Billy Squier's "Rock Me Tonite" video. This episode may well be as horrible as his dancing in the video. Let's tune in together and see. Junky had started his EICMA recap, cuts to Harley-Davidson vs Indian, then Jae called last night and had a huge victory to share. She sent me an hour long audio file, and I don't know what's in it. Jae shares a courtroom drama. I didn't listen for content, so you and I are hearing it for the first time LIVE. It could get Bat-S#!% crazy knowing Jae!! Wiggins is in Texas at his 5th job in just as many months. Let's wish him swell since we don't know if he'll return to the show. Texas BBQ is that good. There may be "Missing California Man..." headlines on the news! Finally, we get underway on our MOTO-SCAN segment. It's a new feature that we're going to delve into for the next few months. Scanning your moto one piece at a time. Enjoy the shizzy!! Thanks to our supporters on Patreon. Without them the show would not be possible. How do you follow up two landmark albums like Don't Say No and Emotions In Motion? Well, I suppose you scramble and get stuck with Jim Steinman as a producer, you write some solid songs, make an appearance on SNL, and get stellar guests like Brian May for starters. In the process, you end up with your highest charting single, Rock Me Tonite. Except, there's that video. Did the Rock Me Tonite video destroy Billy's career?  You may be surprised by our discussion.. Joined by podcast friends Jon Lamoreaux of The Hustle Podcast and BJ Kramp of the Rock And/Or Roll Podcast, Eric and his co-hosts go in-depth on these topics and take a track by track look at Billy's 1984 Signs of Life album. How did Billy fit in with the wave of hard rock hitting the shelves in 1984? What the hell does the 1982 movie Night Shift have to do with any of this?!?  Are you guys talking about the Best of The Counting Crows?!?  Listen to find out.
