The boys (minus one) hang up the lab coats, put down the scalpels, and take an unscientific look at Geezer Butler's battle with depression through the dark poetry of Black Sabbath.
What began as one of the largest dog rescue efforts in American history may become a turning point in the movement to end animal testing. In this special episode of the Animal Wellness Podcast, host Joseph Grove takes listeners inside the remarkable rescue of approximately 1,500 beagles from Ridglan Farms in Wisconsin, a commercial breeding facility that supplied dogs for laboratory experimentation. Drawn from a record-setting national webinar, this episode features the voices of the people who helped make the rescue possible — including advocates, rescuers, policymakers, and public figures who are now working to ensure fewer animals ever enter laboratories in the first place. You'll hear from: • Wayne Pacelle, president of the Center for a Humane Economy and Animal Wellness Action • Shannon Keith, founder of the Beagle Freedom Project Congressman Nick Langworthy of New York • Debbie Gibson, pop legend and actress • Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath • Stacy Kivowitz, chair of Animal Wellness Action • Muriel Van Hoosen, chair of the Center for a Humane Economy Together, they explore the rescue itself, the challenges of rehabilitating animals who have never experienced normal life, and the growing scientific and political movement to replace outdated animal testing with modern technologies. This episode examines: • The inside story of the Ridglan beagle rescue • What life was like for dogs bred for laboratory experimentation • The enormous logistics of moving and rehoming 1,500 animals • Why animal testing remains embedded in federal policy • New technologies that could replace animal experimentation • The bipartisan effort to modernize testing requirements • What advocates are doing now to prevent future generations of animals from entering laboratories The rescue of these beagles captured national attention. But as our guests make clear, the larger mission is just beginning. Listen now to hear how compassion, science, and public policy are converging to challenge a system that has remained largely unchanged for decades. Take action! The Tragically Hip On Shuffle - Live Stream: Train OvernightThis week on The Tragically Hip On Shuffle, jD pulls 'Train Overnight' from "Music @ Work" - the twelfth track on the eighth album, a deep cut that earned exactly zero votes in the TTHTop40 fan-sourced countdown, landing in the company of only four other songs in The Hip's entire catalogue with the same distinction. 'Luv, sic,' 'Goodnight Josephine,' 'Sherpa,' and 'Are We Family.' That's the list. Five songs. Out of everything they ever recorded. The panel doesn't agree on what to make of 'Train Overnight.' And that's exactly what makes this episode worth an hour of your time.Kirk from Chino is the only panelist who saw it live - twice, in San Francisco and LA on the same tour. He noticed seven people on stage his first time seeing The Hip. A keyboard player, a female vocalist who occasionally played percussion. That was his frame of reference for what this band was. Greg from Tacoma - who first heard The Hip on the same Seattle radio station that broke Nirvana, spent two years thinking the song was NRBQ, then proceeded to do guerrilla marketing for the band across the Pacific Northwest for the better part of a decade - brings the long-distance devotion that makes American Hip fans a particular breed of formidable. Mike from Toronto was there from the very beginning. Jake Gold handed him a wristband at a Day for Night-era surprise show at the Horseshoe. Queen and Spadina. Nine in the morning. 300 people that night. He asks the question the whole panel keeps circling back to: if 'Train Overnight' had been on the first record, would The Hip have been The Hip?The conversation moves through Gord's lyrical genius - specifically the line about apologizing like an old dictator might, which Greg calls one of those Gordism nuggets just buried in the song - through the bass work of Gord Sinclair (part McCartney, part Geezer Butler, all chug), through what it meant to be an American doing guerrilla marketing for a band most of your country had never heard of, and through the generational divide the Shuffle keeps surfacing: "Music @ Work" as exit point for one wave of fans and as entry point for another. Kirk came in through this record. Mike came in at the Horseshoe in '87. Greg found them in 1989. Same band. Three completely different doors.Greg puts the whole arc into something sharp near the end: Day for Night as the blue period, the hangover after the nineties. Trouble at the Henhouse as the rosy-fingered dawn coming up the next morning. Phantom Power as the bright of day. And "Music @ Work" as a prism - every colour at once. The first record where they had 5,000 crayons instead of 64. You've got to love it.Next week on The Tragically Hip On Shuffle: 'I'm a Werewolf Baby.'GuestsKirk from Chino - A returning Shuffle panelist and musician, Kirk came to The Hip through the later catalogue and has been going back to the beginning ever since. He saw 'Train Overnight' live twice on the same tour - San Francisco and LA. He's a co-host on Discovering Downie and plays in a cover band called The Darryls (his name is Larry). He has a solo album in the works and a debut live performance booked in San Diego, May 2. Follow him at Kirk Lane Music on Facebook and Instagram.Mike from Toronto - A first-timer on the Shuffle and a lifelong Hip fan who was there from the very beginning - the Horseshoe, the Alma Combo in '87, a Day for Night-era surprise show where Jake Gold gave him the wristband. His go-to record is "Day for Night." He listens to every album start to finish on long drives. He also recommends Ryan Davis Roadhouse Band - playing the Horseshoe in June.Greg from Tacoma - Another first-timer, Greg has been a Hip devotee since he heard them on the radio in 1989 - or thought he did, until he spent two years believing the song was NRBQ. His go-to record is "In Between Evolution," and Tacoma is name-checked in the 'Tacoma Narrows Bridge' lyric, which he notes with appropriate pride. He put a record out at 60. He is in the Tacoma, Washington area and has a crew of five who all attend Hip shows and all play in bands at least partially influenced by The Hip.Links & ResourcesSubmit to podList 7 - covers from The Tragically Hip EP through Day for Night: podlist.tthpods.comAn Evening for Sara J - Saturday, April 11, Firkin on Yonge, Toronto: tickets.tthpods.comDiscovering Downie (referenced by Kirk): available on all podcast platformsKirk Lane Music: Facebook and Instagram https://hadeesmarket.bandcamp.com/album/missives-at-the-turnhttps://www.youtube.com/@HadeesMarketTimestamps00:00 - Pre-show promo: Joe from Forever Hip on An Evening for Sara J 01:37 - jD opens The Tragically Hip On Shuffle 02:27 - Introducing Kirk from Chino, Mike from Toronto, Greg from Tacoma 04:32 - Go-to Hip records: "Live Between Us," "In Between Evolution," "Day for Night" 09:05 - Mike's Horseshoe stories - from '87 to the Day for Night surprise show 12:26 - The reveal: tonight's song is 'Train Overnight' from "Music @ Work" 16:32 - Panel reacts after listening 17:02 - Greg on the Gordism nugget - apologizing like an old dictator might 23:51 - Mike: was "Music @ Work" a chapter closing or a door opening? 27:40 - The zero-votes revelation: only five songs in the entire catalogue 31:52 - Kirk saw it live. Imagine Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin colliding in one room — and someone actually hit record. In this episode highlight clip, Denny Somach, author of Get the Led Out: How Led Zeppelin Became the Biggest Band in the World, shares the incredible story of the jam session where Geezer Butler played with Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, and Tony Iommi — a moment fans would consider impossible… except it happened. The musicians even jokingly dubbed it “Black Zeppelin.”Here's the twist: the session was recorded, but Geezer doesn't have the tape. Somebody does. And after all these years, it could still surface. Was it heavy? Was it bluesy? And could rock's ultimate lost collaboration someday leak out? This is the story of one of the most fascinating missing recordings in rock history — the album that exists, but nobody can hear.Listen to Episode 357 -Led Zeppelin: The Band That Ruled the World
Ozzy Osbournen ja Ronnie James Dion laulettua Black Sabbathin keulahahmoina, 1980-luvun alussa bändille koitti vaikea aikakausi. Sitä kutsutaan nimellä ”Lost Years”, hämärät vuodet. This week on Toilet Radio: we're talking about DIPSHITS and MORONS like Phil Labonte. But I swear to god we don't spend too much time on it. Things are bad enough as is, we don't gotta focus on ‘em. Don and Dude return to honor two titans lost in 2025, revisiting albums that capture the creative peaks and lasting influence of Brian Wilson with The Beach Boys and Ozzy Osbourne with Black Sabbath. The episode traces how The Beach Boys Today! and Paranoid reshaped pop and heavy music, revealing how these records still echo through everything from chamber pop to modern metal. The Beach Boys – The Beach Boys Today! (1965) Brian Wilson uses Today! as a turning point, steering the band from surf-and-cars singles into a more introspective, studio-crafted pop world that points directly toward Pet Sounds. Side A delivers bright, radio-ready hooks like "Do You Wanna Dance?" and "When I Grow Up (To Be a Man), "while Side B dives into confessional ballads such as "Please Let Me Wonder" and "She Knows Me Too Well," blending chamber pop arrangements with vulnerable, adult themes.Black Sabbath – Paranoid (1970) Paranoid crystallizes the sound and mood of heavy metal, fusing Tony Iommi's down-tuned riffs, Geezer Butler's ominous lyrics, Bill Ward's jazz-schooled drumming, and Ozzy Osbourne's haunted vocals into a tight, relentless 1970 statement. From the anti-war sprawl of "War Pigs" and the sci-fi tragedy of "Iron Man" to the accidental hit "Paranoid" and the psychedelic "Fairies Wear Boots," the record turns fear, addiction, and apocalypse into riff-driven anthems that defined the genre.Dude is Diggin':The Macks – Bonanza (2025): A volatile, modern rock blast from a Portland band that smashes garage energy, psychedelic noise, and restless experimentation into a noisy, cathartic portrait of contemporary anxiety.Metallica – Reload (1997): A late-'90s reinvention that leans into groove and atmosphere, where hard rock bruisers like Fuel sit alongside moodier cuts like "The Memory Remains," featuring Marianne Faithfull's ghostly guest vocal.Don is Diggin':Just Desserts – Curtains (2025): A reflective, lo-fi-to-full-band set from Larry Fessenden and Tom Laverack that wrestles with post-COVID grief, aging, and small flashes of grace nearly four decades after their debut. The Cure – The Show of a Lost World (2025): A concert film capturing The Cure unveiling Songs of a Lost World in full at London's Troxy, framing the new material in a single, immersive performance.Follow the show on Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and Bluesky @albumnerds, and support by subscribing, rating, reviewing, and sharing. “What we have once enjoyed deeply we can never lose. Black Sabbath has us Paranoid as we review their sophomore album this week! After Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler, and company literally invented the genre of heavy metal with their debut they knew they needed to push the envelope to further define and refine their style with the next release. With just three days of studio time and hits like War Pigs and Iron Man in their arsenal, find out if Paranoid ranks among the greats... or if it gets an Electric Funeral.James & Connor explore the record's origins as Walpurgis, talk about the Prince Of Darkness' life and legacy, and dive into the recording techniques used to make Paranoid stand out-- from floaty flutes to metal fan blades. Connor the Concept King tries to imagine the Iron Man story woven into the MCU, and The Mixtaper is bringing us facts of the band's unbelievable antics (emphasis on the ANT). We'll talk about mysterious aerosol poisons, exploding fish, and Michael Bolton's branching career path during Fact Or Spin. Can Black Sabbath make this a Mixtober to remember? We've got one more Mixtober week in store, so make sure to subscribe and follow for more! This album has the band's highest concentration of hits... but is it Black Sabbath's best? Back to the Beginning was a benefit concert by the English rock band Black Sabbath, with a number of supporting artists. It took place on July 5th, 2025 at Villa Park in Aston, Birmingham, England, very near where the band was formed in 1968. The event concluded with the final live performances of both the band and lead singer Ozzy Osbourne; it also marked the first time since 2005 that the original line-up of the band (Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward) had performed together live. Osbourne, no longer able to walk due to advanced Parkinson's disease, sang while seated on a throne. The widely-lauded concert was streamed worldwide via pay per view with a broadcast delay. It featured an all-star lineup of supporting acts, including two supergroups of musicians serving as the house band. Proceeds from the event totaled £140 million, and will be donated to Acorns Children's Hospice, Birmingham Children's Hospital, and Cure Parkinson's. Black Sabbath is widely regarded as a foundational band for heavy metal, with their influence extending to various subgenres. On this week's show, we catch up on a smokin' boatload o' new-ish singles and pour one out for the late Ozzy Osbourne. All this & much, much less! Debts No Honest Man Can Pay is a podcast that thinks it's a radio show...because it used to be one. The show started in 2003 at WHFR-FM (Dearborn, MI), moved to WGWG-FM (Boiling Springs, NC) in 2006 & Plaza Midwood Community Radio (Charlotte, NC) in 2012, with a brief pit-stop at WLFM-FM (Appleton, WI) in 2004. It phoenixed into a podcast in 2020, thanks to the fine and fabulously furious folks at NRM Streamcast.
And now for something completely different...in this special episode, we pay tribute to the late, great Ozzy Osbourne and each pick five of our favorite songs from the rock legend's career. So you may ask yourself, why are we doing an Ozzy episode on our classic alternative music podcast? We certainly don't want to be "those guys" who churn out opportunistic memorial episodes - but, quite simply, Uncle Gregg suggested "hey, we should do an Ozzy tribute" and Brett said "OK, let's do it." That's the way decisions are made here at O3L Headquarters...and six hours later, the episode is out to the world. John "Ozzy" Osbourne passed away on July 22, 2025, at the age of 76, a little more than two weeks after his final performance at the Back to the Beginning farewell concert, a massive show that featured a who's who of heavy metal musicians, culminating in a five song Ozzy solo set and a four song finale from Black Sabbath. Ozzy, of course, rose to prominence as the lead singer of Birmingham rock band Black Sabbath from the time of their formation in 1969 until his dismissal in 1979. Considered one of (if not THE) most influential bands in the evolution of heavy metal, Sabbath also consisted of guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler, and drummer Bill Ward, releasing a string of classic albums like Black Sabbath (1970), Paranoid (1970), Master of Reality (1971), Vol. 4 (1972), Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (1973), Sabotage (1975), Technical Ectasy (1976), Never Say Die (1978) before Ozzy launched a fruitful solo career. Solo records include 1980's Blizzard of Ozz, 1981's Diary of a Madman, 1983's Bark at the Moon, and 1991's No More Tears, intertwined with occasional Black Sabbath reunions, most notably their 2013 album 13. Osbourne remained at the forefront of pop culture through his popular Ozzfest tours and his unlikely stint as a lovable TV Dad on the reality show The Osbournes. Learn more about your ad choices. We honor the work of Ozzy Osbourne, who passed away this week at age 76. Andrew and Dominique give Ozzy his flowers for being a much greater singer, performer and ambassador for rock and heavy metal music than people realize. We talk about the grim circumstances that led to Ozzy co-founding Black Sabbath with Geezer Butler, Tony Iommi and Bill Ward, and we consider how Satanic panic unwittingly fueled the band's rise in the ‘70s. We stop down on some highlights from Ozzy's incredible solo career and consider how music history would have been different had his widow and longtime manager Sharon Osbourne not entered the picture. Also, we consider how perfectly Ozzy exited, from his revelatory final performance in Birmingham, raising $200 million for charity, and seeing all of his friends one last time.Tell us about your first listen @AtFirstListenpodcast on Instagram!Subscribe so you don't miss an episode!(Episode 38.)
On this episode of Johnny Beane TV, we pay tribute to the legendary Ozzy Osbourne, who has passed away at the age of 76. “It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning,” his family said in a statement. “He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time.” No cause of death was given, though last few years leading up to his passing had been a rough ride for Ozzy. He was forced to postpone his “No More Tours 2” farewell tour, first due to a bout with pneumonia, then due to a serious fall while at home in Los Angeles. In early 2020, he went public with Parkinson's disease, just before the pandemic hit. Despite his ailments, Osbourne mustered the strength to play one final concert alongside his Black Sabbath bandmates earlier this month on July 5th in his hometown of Birmingham, England. Born John Michael Osbourne on December 3rd, 1948 in Aston, Birmingham, Ozzy sought to become a singer in a rock band after becoming smitten by The Beatles. By the end of the ‘60s, he had formed Black Sabbath (originally named Earth), rounding out a lineup that also included guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler, and drummer Bill Ward. Mike Ayers, author of the new book Sharing In The Groove: The Untold Story of the '90s Jam Band Explosion and the Scene That Followed joins the show, featuring conversation (and a bit of Tim's radio history) with bands like Blues Traveler, Spin Doctors & Phish. In light of musician (and reality TV star) Ozzy Osbourne's passing today, we dig into the archive and re-air our conversation with Geezer Butler, longtime bass player and lyricist for Black Sabbath, the heavy metal band Ozzy fronted. We originally had Butler on in June of 2023 when he released his book Into The Void: From Birth to Black Sabbath and Beyond. “There were some heroes and there were some zeroes…” BACK TO THE BEGINNING, the final concert performance by the O.G. lineup of BLACK SABBATH featuring Bill Ward, Geezer Butler, Tony Iommi, and Ozzy Osbourne (along with an all-star roster of top shelf rock & metal artists) was held at Villa Park in Aston, Birmingham, England on 05/07/2025 (that's July 5th, 2025 for people in the United States) and raised nearly $200 Million for charity. While BACK TO THE BEGINNING will go down in heavy metal history as “The Live Aid of Metal”, it also represents a significant turning point and an emotional marker for metal fans from all over the world who came to pay homage and bid a celebratory yet poignant farewell to the Founding Fathers of Heavy Metal and The Prince Of Darkness. Ladies, prepare to comprehend why Pantera playing Sabbath songs at a Zeppelin tribute is as much a faux pas as “showing up to a funeral wearing a bridal gown”, gentlemen, understand how Slipknot's Sid Wilson is an absolute genius when it comes to remembering landmark dates with that special someone, and as for everybody else, break out your assortment of relaxers and various modalities of twanglification and JOIN US as we celebrate Sabbath, Ozzy, and all things metal with our take on BACK TO THE BEGINNING. Welcome to Big Pile of Black Sabbath, a tribute to the patriarchs of heavy metal. Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler, Bill Ward and Tony Iommi played their final show together last week and it did not disappoint. From the special guest surprises, to Sabbath's last performance, I was happy to be a fan. TOOL performed Hand of Doom earlier in the day. To hear Danny Carey blast a Sabbath song was wicked hot. Jason Momoa led a mosh pit. I've always loved Iommi, but Geezer Butler really cracked me with that last performance.I've never heard or imagined War Pigs played like that. Unbelievable. The underground icing on the cake in this episode was me finding a $100 plus record in a $2 crate and immediately knowing it shouldn't have been in there. Millions of things I still don't know in this realm, but I'm getting stronger like Charlie in the bush. I hope someone out there enjoyed it, thank you for being here. Until next week.. It took place on 5 July 2025 at Villa Park in Aston, Birmingham, England, very near where the band was formed in 1968. The event concluded with the final live performances of both the band and lead singer Ozzy Osbourne; it also marked the first time since 2005 that the original line-up of the band (Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward) had performed together live. Proceeds from the event totalled £140 million, and will be donated to charity.” (Wiki) Hosted by: Luke = https://bsky.app/profile/rockednet.bsky.socialAlex = https://bsky.app/profile/voiceofalex.bsky.socialRowan = https://bsky.app/profile/rowbuck01.bsky.social

On this episode of Exclusively Van Halen, we celebrate the anniversary of A Different Kind of Truth!
On this episode of Afterhocks TV, hosts Matt and Chris dive deep into the legendary career of Geezer Butler, the iconic bassist best known for his work with Black Sabbath. They focus particularly on his 1995 debut album with his solo project GZR, Plastic Planet. The album, which blends heavy metal with industrial and electronic elements, is often regarded as an underrated gem of the 90s. Matt and Chris explore the unique lineup of the band at the time, which included ex-Fear Factory vocalist Burton C. Bell, whose distinct voice added a powerful dimension to the album's sound. Alongside them was the incredibly talented drummer Deen Castronovo, who would later go on to play in bands like Journey and Bad English, but here demonstrates his hard-hitting, dynamic style. The episode delves into the creative process behind Plastic Planet, which was shaped by the collaboration of these incredible musicians and Geezer Butler's own vision. The album's blend of heavy riffs, industrial noise, and darker lyrical themes stands in stark contrast to much of the music being produced in the mid-90s, making it an important and often overlooked release for metal fans. Matt and Chris discuss how Plastic Planet captures a different side of Geezer Butler, one that moves away from the traditional Black Sabbath sound and embraces a more modern, experimental approach. They highlight standout tracks, the album's atmosphere, and the innovative production choices that helped the album resonate within the metal community—despite not receiving mainstream attention. Whether you're a longtime Black Sabbath fan or a newer listener to Butler's solo work, this episode is a great deep dive into a forgotten classic that has only grown in significance over time. *NOTE: Everything said here, and on every episode of all of our shows are 100% the opinions of the hosts. In the final episode of Season 2, Charles welcomes Jim Turbert, an American communication technologist and podcaster residing in Rotterdam. Jim reflects on his first concert at age 13, where Ringo Starr's performance left a lasting impression, partly thanks to his music-loving uncle who influenced his musical tastes. He recounts various memorable concerts, including a powerful Afghan Wigs show in Boston, where lead singer Greg Dooley's storytelling made the performance unforgettable, even despite later learning Dooley's on-stage declaration of being on acid was untrue.Jim shares his appreciation for technically proficient artists like Mike Watt and Nels Cline, recounting a particularly electrifying performance that displayed exceptional guitar skills. His experiences underscore the importance of venue acoustics and crowd energy, such as how silence and attention at a Sigur Rós concert added to the immersive quality of the show. Conversely, he describes a disappointing Eagles concert during their 'When Hell Freezes Over' tour due to multiple breaks and inflated egos.A standout anecdote involves Jim losing a shoe while crowd-surfing at a Nirvana concert, only to have Kurt Cobain toss it backstage, leaving him to navigate the chilly New England night unshod. Amid these personal stories, Jim also touches on the broader implications of concert experiences, including nostalgic reflections on hitchhiking back from a Sonic Youth concert with friends and the pure joy of witnessing an early White Stripes performance in a frat house setting. In addition to sharing concert stories, Jim speaks about his podcast, 'Feel Free to Deviate,' which delves into people's career paths and their relationships with success. The podcast captures various personal and professional journeys, underscoring Jim's curiosity and communication skills.BANDS: Afghan Wigs, Aerosmith, Beatles, Black Crows, Blackfoot, Breeders, Clarence Clemens, Deep Purple, Dire Straits, Dr. John, The Eagles, Joe Walsh, Led Zeppelin, Living Color, Lounge Acts, Mason Ruffner, Ministry, Minutemen, Nazareth, Nick Cave, Nils Lofgren, Otoboke Beaver, Porno for Pyros, Radiohead, Ringo Starr, Rolling Stones, Sigur Rós, Soundgarden, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Sonic Youth, Ten Years After, the Doors, U2, Walter Trout, White Stripes, Willie Preston.VENUES: T. Ozzy is back and not a second too soon. We wrap our Sabbath Series with their 2013 reunion LP. The album saw the return of two thirds of the original quartet and while drummer Bill Ward is certainly missed, the magic that Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler had way back when things all began in 1970 is absolutely still very much in tact. The atmosphere, the riffs, the wonderful doom and gloom are all present. In short, Black Sabbath is Black Sabbath again. On Friday 13 February 1970, Black Sabbath released their first album and a new genre was born - heavy metal. Witness speaks to guitarist Tony Iommi about the band's origins in Britain's industrial West Midlands - and the day his career nearly ended when he lost the tips of two fingers in a metal-working accident.(Photo: Black Sabbath backstage at Top of the Pops (BBC). As bassist and lyricist for Black Sabbath, Geezer Butler has a lifetime of rock and roll stories to tell. From the band's working class roots in Birmingham to their early days as a traditional blues band to their transformation into the quintessential heavy metal group, Geezer tells Marc how he brought it all together with Ozzy Osbourne, Bill Ward and Tony Iommi, how it eventually fell apart, and how they picked up the pieces. They also talk about Frank Zappa, the Beatles, and the true meaning of Iron Man.
