The debut album by Tom Tom Club, released in 1981, is a vibrant blend of new wave, funk, and dance music, characterized by its infectious rhythms and playful lyrics. Formed by Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz of Talking Heads, the album showcases their ability to craft catchy, genre-blurring tunes that are both innovative and accessible. Tracks like "Genius of Love" and "Wordy Rappinghood" became iconic, with their quirky melodies and eclectic influences drawing from reggae, hip hop, and world music. The album's upbeat energy and carefree vibe make it a standout in the early '80s music scene.Listen to the album: SpotifyApple MusicLinks:Official websiteContactSupport us on PatreonDISCLAIMER: Due to copyright restrictions, we are unable to play pieces of the songs we cover in these episodes. We've got a guest star! Celeste of the Nerd & Tie Podcast and Celeste is Best joins the casual crew this episode to talk about the Trill. The species has always been a fascinating one and science fiction stand-in for conversations about gender and identity, so the three of us are going to delve into that in three different shows. Star Trek: The Nest Generation's “The Host” is the introduction to the Trill who look a little strange compared to what we're used to. There's a romance, a death and Riker volunteers to get a slug put in him. We also spend time in the Enterprise salon with our hands in some green goo. In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's “Rejoined” Jazdia Dax meets her wife from a former life and the pair hit it off, even though they're not supposed to in Trill lore. Kira's a good comrade, Bashir's a fifth wheel and we get a touching love story in this episode. Finally in Star Trek: Discovery's “Forget Me Not”, new arrival Adira is having problems being a human host to a Trill symbiont, so we journey through memories and buck traditions while Saru's having to learn how to get his crew of overachieving nerds to chill out a bit. This was a really fun episode to make, even though there are some audio issues we've hopefully ironed out and one of us didn't do the right homework. 00:05:30 Trill 00:07:55 Celeste's history with Star Trek 00:10:29 What Non-Star Trek Thing Have People Been Enjoying? 00:21:51 TNG: The Host 00:52:30 DS9: Rejoined 01:22:05 DISCO: Forget Me Not Pedant's Corner: The governor was Leka Trion, not Leka Tyrion. Say She She is coming off a big, big year. The trio of discodelic sirens released their double album “Silver” late September just shy of one year after their debut “Prism.” They had their national TV debut and played Glastonbury and the Hollywood Bowl, in addition to about 100 other shows, all on the strength of their dancefloor friendly sound and incredible, almost operatic three part harmonies. The threesome — their name is an homage to Nile Rogers and Chic — cites as influences everyone from Rotary Connection to Minnie Riperton to Asha Puthli to Liquid Liquid to Grace Jones and Tom Tom Club. The Talking Head's concert film Stop Making Sense first came out forty years ago, and it's just been rereleased in theaters in a 4k remaster by A24. The film finds the band — Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz, David Byrne and Jerry Harrison — at the height of their powers over three successive nights at the the Hollywood Pantages Theater. As Chris and Tina remembered it when they spoke to producer Reanna Cruz, "We'd reached a state in our career and our lives when we felt, 'we've gotten pretty good at this now. We can show the world.'" Director Jonathan Demme spliced the band's performances into an eighty-eight minute odyssey beginning with Byrne solo on the stage and gradually bringing in the rest of the band and a cast of stellar guest musicians: vocalists Lynn Mabry and Ednah Holt, keyboardist Bernie Worrell, percussionist Steve Scales, and guitarist Alex Weir. The film introduced landmark moments like Byrne's big suit, Demme's cinematic approach to concert cinematography, Chris's and Tina's Tom Tom Club performing the perennial sample flip "Genius of Love," and a theater-rocking version of "Burning Down the House." Stop Making Sense broke the mold of concert films and created a new paradigm for artists to follow ever since. Nate, Charlie, and Reanna take insights from Reanna's conversation with Tina and Chris on the legacy of Stop Making Sense as a guide to think through our own favorite concert movies — the Band's The Last Waltz, Madonna's Truth or Dare, and Beyonce's Homecoming — to identify the musical and visual choices that make them so indelible. Jonathan Demme and the Talking Heads' concert film classic Stop Making Sense is back in theaters for a 40th anniversary revival, so Brad saw it in IMAX at Jake's request. Brad and Jake talk about the delightful addition of David Byrne solo and Tom Tom Club songs, Bryne's insane stamina, and propose a revival for concert films in the wake of this and Taylor Swift's new juggernaut movie. The talk then shifts to Brad's assignment for Jake, the four-hour epic and final Sergio Leone film, Once Upon a Time in America. They talk about enduring Robert De Niro's despicable protagonist Noodles, wrestling with James Woods's problematic real-life personality in light of his terrific performance here, the production struggles the movie had upon its release, and the raw deal that composer Ennio Morricone was served up in 1984. Other movies discussed in this episode: The Last Waltz (1978), True Stories (1986), Tanner '88 (1988), Tanner on Tanner (2004), Shine a Light (2008), Beyonce: Lemonade (2016), Rolling Thunder Revue (2019), American Utopia (2020), Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (2023).

The Du-Rites' JAY MUMFORD, formerly known as the producer/emcee J-Zone, has worn many hats throughout his career—rapper, beat-maker, DJ, author/journalist, and finally drummer. J-Zone developed an underground rap following during the early 2000s indie hip-hop explosion. As he got older, Mumford grew increasingly jaded with the rap industry, before bottoming out. Sitting on the throne of a drum set, Jay would rediscover his passion for the funk music that first inspired him as a teenager. The major transition began to take shape in 2011, when J-Zone attempted to quit rap, write a hip-hop memoir, and start over as “Jay Mumford on drums” in his mid-30's. An unlikely story, but one definitively his own. On Episode 065, with no holds barred Jay Mumford takes us through this roller-coaster journey, career highlights, lowlights, battles between his ears, and a-ha moments along the way. 2:30 - Thanks to Discovery 2023, Bicycle Day, Electric KoolAid for sponsoring ep.065 6:30 - The Upful Update 9:45 - Introducing JAY MUMFORD (fka J-Zone) 13:30 - INTERVIEW w/ Jay (119 mins) Currently, Jay Mumford holds down the drumkit in a few bands, his main gig is The Du-Rites, a garage-funk duo with Tom Tom Club guitarist Pablo Martin. Mumford has been working with Adrian Quesada's solo projects, including a performance on Austin City Limits with an 18-piece ensemble, an evening Jay refers to as the best experience of his 25 year career. Mumford remains renowned for his ‘Royalty Free Drum Breaks' drum packs, ideal for sample-based producers to mine meticulously-crafted breakbeats laid down in his late grandparents' basement. For a few years, he moonlit as a music journalist, blogging nuanced topics in hip-hop and drummer culture. Jay hosted the phenomenal ‘Give The Drummer Some,' - an illuminating interview series for now-defunct Red Bull Music Academy. The talk radio-style program highlighted the songs, lessons, and legacies of underground/unsung heroes from the ‘60s and ‘70s. ***Deep Bow*** to Jay for this thoughtful, personal, inspiring conversation.
