Six-time Grammy winner, Nashville Songwriters Hall of Famer, and Kennedy Center honoree Amy Grant joins us to chat about the pursuit of honesty in songwriting, the stories behind some of her songs, and her catalog of modern day Christmas classics. PART ONEPaul and Scott chat about the idea of a "definitive" version of a Christmas song, discuss their favorites, debate about Christmas songs they love and hate, and delve into Scott's elementary school crush on Amy Grant. PART TWOOur in-depth interview with Amy GrantABOUT AMY GRANTPerhaps the most influential pioneer of the Contemporary Christian Music genre, Amy Grant released her first album while still in high school. Her fourth album, 1982's Age to Age, found unprecedented success with hit singles such as “Sing Your Praise to the Lord” and “El Shaddai.” Age to Age topped the Christian album chart for 85 weeks, earned Amy her first Grammy award, and became the first Christian album to be certified Platinum by the RIAA. Her 1984 album Straight Ahead spawned hits with Amy's original compositions “Thy Word” and “Angels,” and became the first Christian album to land on the Billboard 200. By the mid-1980s, she further crossed over to mainstream success when “Find a Way,” which she wrote with Michael W. Smith, hit the Top 40 on Billboard's pop chart. The following year, Amy reached the top of the pop chart with “The Next Time I Fall,” a duet with Peter Cetera. Her 1991 album Heart in Motion sold 5 million copies and spawned four Top 10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, including the self-penned hits “Baby Baby” and “Every Heartbeat.” That same year, she enjoyed another Top 10 pop hit as a songwriter with Michael W. Smith's “Place in This World.” Amy continued to find mainstream success in the mid-1990s with singles such as “House of Love,” a duet with her now-husband Vince Gill, as well as the songs “Lucky One” and “Takes a Little Time,” which she wrote with Keith Thomas and Wayne Kirkpatrick, respectively. Starting with 1983's A Christmas Album, holiday music has been an important part of Amy Grant's artistry. She has since released the albums Home for Christmas, which was certified three-times Platinum; A Christmas to Remember; Tennessee Christmas; and The Animals' Christmas, a collaborative album with Art Garfunkel featuring songs by Jimmy Webb that explore the nativity story from the perspective of the animals. Amy's original songs “Tennessee Christmas” and “Breath of Heaven” have become modern day holiday standards. Her Christmas concerts, often featuring husband Vince Gill and longtime collaborator Michael W. Smith, have become a holiday tradition. To date, Amy has released twenty studio albums and has sold over 30 million records worldwide. Seventeen of her albums have reached #1 on Billboard's Top Christian Albums chart, more than any other artist in history. She has won 6 Grammy awards, 26 Dove awards, and has been inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. Amy has received honorary doctorates from two universities, has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2021. She was a recipient of the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors for lifetime artistic achievement in 2022.

Steve Lukather is one of the most documented guitarists in the hit-making biz. He grew up as an L.A. teen with a crew of fellow musicians who would go on to make their livings at the top of the session scene. By the time Lukather and his pals formed Toto, they were already experienced chart-toppers. The band went on to success with hits including the rockin' “Hold the Line,” breezy, bouncing “Rosanna,” and the timeless “Africa.”As a session player, Lukather's reign in the '70s and ‘80s extended from Olivia Newton-John to Herbie Hancock to Michael Jackson. And alongside Michael McDonald—whose “I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)” included Lukather's distinctive rhythm riffage—Daryl Hall and John Oates, Kenny Loggins, Peter Cetera, and Christopher Cross (among many others) he may have earned the title of yacht rock's number one guitar player. On this episode of the 100 Guitarists podcast, we're talking about our favorite Lukather tracks, from his best rhythm parts to his most rippin' solos. And even though he spends most of his playing time with the biggest names, we've managed to call up a few deep cuts.Use code EMG100 for 15% off at https://www.emgpickups.com/Follow Nick: https://www.instagram.com/nickmillevoiFollow Jason: https://www.instagram.com/jasonshadrickGet at us: 100guitarists@premierguitar.comCall/Text: 319-423-9734Podcast powered by Sweetwater. FIRST, GET NOTICED Before you can grow relationships with your audience and become an authority and influencer in your niche, you need to get discovered. Making your podcast discoverable is one of the first critical steps. So many podcasters struggle to grow their audience. However, they are doing very little to be visible and become discoverable. You cannot expect people to just show up to your podcast. It takes diligent, deliberate action on your part to get in front of those listeners. As you build the relationships, many will become fans for life. CHICAGO GETS NOTICED I just saw the band Chicago perform Wednesday night. It was a full house even though only 2 of the 10 guys on stage were original members of the band. Jimmy Pankow on trombone and Lee Loughnane on trumpet were the only two original members on stage. Robert Lamm is still listed as a member, but for some reason he wasn't there. Even the lead singer is the third replacement after Peter Cetera left the band in 1985. Chicago has been touring for over 55 years. Over those years, they have been building relationships. They have toured relentlessly for years gaining more and more fans at each show. In 1971, Chicago performed a week of sold out shows at Carnegie Hall in New York City. They were the first rock band to do it and turned the shows into a 4-disc box set as their fourth album. Six years later in 1977, Chicago became one of the first acts to receive the Gold Ticket Award from Madison Square Garden in New York City. It was a new award given to performers who sold over 100,000 tickets to performances at the venue. Chicago drew over 180,000 people to the venue in nine sold-out appearances there over the years. On Wednesday night, a full house at the 5,000-seat outdoor amphitheater sang, danced and partied with a band that was a shell of its former self. And the fans couldn't have cared less. It was legacy. The music holds a special place in the hearts of fans even though the original guys aren't there performing it. It's all about relationships. DISCOVERABLE THROUGH PODCASTS Relationships begin by getting discovered. There are many ways to get discoverable. Some work better than others. In studies that have been done, most people discover new podcasts through word of mouth. They hear somebody else mention the show. Therefore, my favorite way to get discoverable is to get interviewed on other podcasts. Podcast listeners listen to podcasts. Give them options. SUMMITS I find summits a good way to become discoverable. Though all summits are not created equal. I've been on summits that have 15 people at the session. However, I was on an AI summit a few weeks ago where 350 people were there. A summit is like a virtual conference. A group of experts give presentations centered around a the theme of the summit. Summits typically last anywhere from one to five days. The session are usually interviews or presentations. During the presentation, the presenter will usually offer a free lead magnet to get people on their email list. When I was on the summit with 350 people in the room, I was able to add 125 people to my email list. Just ensure your presentation and gift match the audience the summit is attracting. OTHER WAYS TO GET DISCOVERABLE There are a variety of other ways to get discoverable. You can get on stage at conferences in your niche. Find ways to get mentioned in articles. Do Facebook lives in groups with group owners. Just connect with the owner of the group and see if you can add some value to their group. I've have huge success speaking to masterminds. These are typically small groups, but they've invested to be there. You can also create your own virtual events that partners can promote. DANIEL J. LEWIS Today, I want to share an interview I did with Daniel J. Lewis. He is a master at getting your podcast discoverable. As a multiple-award-winning podcaster, Daniel J. What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 29, 2024 39:14

It will come as no surprise to regular listeners of this podcast that we are all big fans of Steve Perry, the chief vocalist of Journey.  So it should also not come as a surprise that we would want to feature his debut solo studio album called Street Talk.  Perry embarked on this solo project shortly after the release of Journey's "Frontiers" album, at a time when the group was packing arenas around the world.  The name of the album comes from his pre-Journey days when he was leading a band called Alien Project - but he had at one time considered naming it, "Street Talk."  Perry also used Craig Krampf as drummer, who was also a previous member of Alien Project. The album obviously has similarities to Journey due to Perry's vocals, but it is significantly softer than the more pop rock/hard rock approach typical of Journey.  The songs are written or co-written by Perry, and showcase Perry's voice in a more ballad-heavy manner.  The lead single, “Oh Sherrie,” was written about his relationship with Perry's then-girlfriend Sherrie Swafford, and hit number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.  We covered “Oh Sherrie” on episode #148, but there are three other singles that broke into the top 40, powering the album to number 12 on the Billboard 200 album charts and to 2x Platinum in sales.Perry had worked outside of Journey during his tenure with the band, including vocal work with both Sammy Hagar and Kenny Loggins.  Other members of the band were also working on side projects, so it was expected that all would return to the group after their separate projects.  Perry followed suit, this, but troubles began to surface with personnel changes and  Perry's mother's failing health causing the "Raised on Radio" Journey album to be delayed.Street Talk gives us a good look at Steve Perry outside of the rest of the Journey band members, during a time when Perry was at the top of his vocal game.Rob brings us this excellent album for today's podcast. She's MineThe track that starts side two is a slow rocker that demonstrates Perry's versatility in musical styles.  The lyrics describe a struggle between a guy and his rival over a girl.  It made it to number 21 on the US charts - and you can't go wrong with a sax. Captured By the MomentThis song is deeper lyrically, with Perry looking at significant times in history and music as snapshots in a frame.  He pays tribute to some key figures from the 60s and 70s including Martin Luther King Jr, Jackie Kennedy, the Beatles, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and others.  It has a distinctive 80's keyboard sound.   Foolish HeartA subdued piece, this track is the second-biggest hit from the album after "Oh, Sherrie."  The lyrics depict a guy longing for love, but who does not trust his heart to make good choices.  It was co-written with Randy Goodrum, who wrote "You Needed Me" for Anne Murray.  It was the last single released from the album.  Strung OutThis faster paced track closes out the album, and discusses love from the perspective of a guy longing for a woman in a relationship with another.  "I feel like Bogart in a crazy movie.  Bogie and me, we never beg - but this time maybe I've got voices in my head."   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the television series “Who's the Boss?”Tony Danza plays a former baseball athlete trying to raise his daughter while working as a live-in housekeeper for a single advertising executive.  Alyssa Milano played Danza's daughter. STAFF PICKS:I Wanna Rock by Twisted Sister Wayne kicks off the staff picks with glam rock sensation Twisted Sister in their follow-up to "We're Not Gonna Take It."  Many listeners may be more familiar with a cover of this song performed by SpongeBob SquarePants in "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie" entitled "Goofy Goober Rock."For Whom the Bell Tolls by MetallicaLynch brings us a signature song from Metallica's 1984 album, "Ride the Lightning."  The heavy riffs typical of Metallica are accented by the toll of chimes, and the lyrics are inspired by Ernest Hemmingway's novel of the same name dealing with war, death, and fate set in the Spanish Civil War.Hard Habit to Break by Chicago Bruce takes the tempo way down with a hit off Chicago 17.  Vocal duties are carried by Bill Champlin and Peter Cetera, and the song is arranged by David Foster.  The lyrics depict a man struggling to get over a long lost love whom he took for granted.  Chicago 17 is Chicago's best selling album, and their last with Peter Cetera in the group. No More Lonely Nights by Paul McCartney Rob closes out the staff picks with a single from the soundtrack to McCartney's film, "Give My Regards to Broad Street."  McCartney brings in Pink Floyd alumnus David Gilmour for guitar work on this song.  Gilmour requested that his session fee be donated to a charity of Paul's choice.  It went to number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Zoolookologie by Jean Michel JarreWe close out on a jazz fusion number from the time which uses samples of voice and spoken words to form an art rock sonic landscape. Chicago was one of the most successful bands of the rock era, racking up 21 Billboard Top Ten hits between 1970 and 1990. They were a band that placed equal (if not greater) emphasis on horns as guitar and picked up where Blood Sweat & Tears left off. Chicago quickly learned how to channel their expansive sound into concise pop songs, scoring hits in the early 1970s with punchy tunes like "25 or 6 to 4" as well as producing sweet melodies like "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" and "Saturday in the Park." As the ‘70s went on, the band began to emphasise their softer side with bassist Peter Cetera singing mellow standards like "If You Leave Me Now," "Baby and "Hard to Say I'm Sorry." The band kept the same sound after Cetera's departure in the mid-1980s. They continued touring and producing albums despite the fact that hits dried up in the ‘90s. Despite this, Chicago remained a pop/rock institution, with original members keyboardist Robert Lamm, trumpeter Lee Loughnane and trombonist James Pankow. Our guest today is Chicago co-founder Lee Loughnane who had been a music student at DePaul University with reed player Walter Parazaider and trombonist James Pankow. The three had moonlighted in St Louis' clubs, playing everything from R&B to Irish music but it wasn't long before organist and singer Robert Lamm was asked to join the band. The new group started playing around the Midwest and soon the sextet became a septet when Peter Cetera became the group's third lead singer. In 1968, they moved to Los Angeles and the album Chicago Transit Authority was released. The album reached the Top 20 and was certified gold. It went on to sell more than two million copies. The band shortened its name to Chicago and the second album in 1970 vaulted into the Top Ten even before its first single, "Make Me Smile," hit the Hot 100. It went on to reach the Top Ten, as did its successor, "25 or 6 to 4." The album quickly went gold and eventually platinum. "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" drawn from the group's first album, as its next single; it gave them their third consecutive Top Ten hit. Chicago III came out in 1971, Chicago V in 1972 spending nine weeks at #1, spurred by its gold-selling Top Ten hit "Saturday in the Park.” The next Top Ten hit, "(I've Been) Searchin' So Long," was released in advance of Chicago VII while Chicago X  included the Grammy-winning number one single "If You Leave Me Now." Chicago XI in 1977 generated the Top Five hit "Baby, What a Big Surprise." By 1984, the band released the biggest-selling album of its career, Chicago 17. It spawned two Top Five hits, "Hard Habit to Break" and "You're the Inspiration." At the turn of the '80s into the '90s, Chicago underwent two more personnel changes. In 1998, they released Chicago 25: The Christmas Album. The band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2016. Their documentary “Now More Than Ever: The History of Chicago" debuted in 2017. Chicago received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020 and their 38th album was released in 2022. Our guest today is co-founder Lee Loughnane who discusses how and why after 56 years, 100 million in album sales and 21 top 10 singles, the Chicago band are still rolling. If you'd like to know more about Chicago head for the band's website https://chicagotheband.com/ If you have suggestions for future guests or would like to get in touch with feedback or comments please email me through my website https://abreathoffreshair.com.au/ I hope you enjoy this week's episode.

Radio DJ Geoff Gundy learned about singer Peter Cetera's departure from the band Chicago the hard way - while interviewing the band Chicago on the radio. Twenty years after Peter Cetera left the band.Lucky for Gundy, there aren't many comedy bombs that will hit that hard. Formally taking up comedy in 2020, he tells stand-up comedian Dan Bublitz Jr how he's been fine-tuning his craft: learning when to use sensitive material, how to work open mics, how to shorten your learning curve by taking classes, and more.Geoff GundyI was such a class clown that I'm lucky one of my grade school teachers didn't kill me. My classmates, however, became like family and many still are. When they weren't pulling their hair out, my teachers often complimented my "quick wit," long before I even knew what that meant. I was lucky enough to watch my first HBO standup comedy special when I was 7, and it became an addiction. (Thanks, Mom!!) In addition to writing and performing standup comedy since 2009, I have worked as an emcee, writer, producer, and top-rated radio host since 2002. What's better than laughter and great music? Not much! On one hand, I naturally call things around me as I see them. On the other, I have always been driven by making a person's day better than it was before we met. I was told from age 12 that I was a comedian, but for years thought my family and friends were just biased. It is beyond liberating to lean into that all the way, and not even get written up for it!https://www.instagram.com/geoff.gundy/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WAfSc0O3brc&ab_channel=GeoffGundyhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/geoff-gundy-b8b4471a5/Art of Bombing:"Nobody Had a Podcast Called The Art of Bombing" Theme by John Hult https://johnhult.bandcamp.com/album/half-a-life-to-recoverBumpers provided by https://www.facebook.com/joenicolamusic Website: https://www.artofbombingpod.com/ Links: https://linktr.ee/artofbombingpodHosts:Dan Bublitz Jr: http://www.danbublitz.com/ Josh Shirley: http://www.joshshirleycomedy.com
