We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal. What a great way to address the King of England, who obviously disagreed. Unfortunately, this strong assertion of a natural right left out two things. First, all men and all women are created equal. Secondly, the Founding Fathers, brilliant as they were, conveniently seemed to forget the fact that slavery, the enslavement of Black men and women, existed in the colonies, and those men and women were surely not equal. But the target, the enemy was the King, and these men, 56 of them from 13 different colonies, were determined to live free and sever all ties with Great Britain. At the beginning of the Declaration of Independence, a masterful political document constructed by the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, the 56 Founding Fathers made this statement:WE HOLD THESE TRUTHS TO BE SELF-EVIDENT, THAT ALL MEN ARECREATED EQUAL, THAT THEY ARE ENDOWED BY THEIR CREATOR WITH CERTAIN INALIENABLE RIGHTS, THAT AMONG THESE ARE LIFE, LIBERTY, AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS.These 56 men were determined to confront the King of England with the fact that there were UNALIENABLE RIGHTS for all mankind, ignored by Great Britain, but those rights were the natural rights which were given by God, the Founders called Him the Creator, and those unalienable rights could not be changed, reduced, or eliminated in any way. Those rights were part of the birthing process of all men and all women. They are not derived from or given from government, but, one could say, they were part of the DNA of every human being. They were determined, these 56 men, that the 13 colonies and all who came thereafter would enjoy those rights and privileges including, and among others, Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.ALL should be able to live life as they choose, accumulate their fortunes, and enjoy the fruits of their labors and earnings, without oppressive taxation or forfeiture of property or monies. ALL should be entitled to everything which LIBERTY entails, including all the rights and freedoms which were later (1787) embodied in the Constitution of the United States, that great document of 1789. ALL are entitled to the Pursuit of Happiness, however that individual defines happiness, and all such rights and privileges are unconditional with one exception. That is, that those rights can not turn from freedoms to mere licenses with respect to behavior and can not diminish or conflict the rights of others. No one has rights superior to those of anyone else.Without the freedoms of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, there can be no freedom of religion (The First Amendment). Those freedoms are essential to the expression, practice, and belief of true religion. And, of course, they are essential, foundational, to the great First Amendment rights of freedom of speech, freedom of press, freedom of petition, and freedom of assembly, more basic rights, birthing rights and never conveyed or instituted by government itself.11 years later, in 1787, these 56 Founders and their successors, the authors of the Declaration of Independence, met once again in Philadelphia, and in 1787 began the drafting of the Constitution of the United States which was issued as a formal document in 1789. The broad and incredible language of the Constitution is illuminated by the principles set forth in the Declaration. The seminal passage in the Declaration is so very important:WE HOLD THESE TRUTHS TO BE SELF-EVIDENT.The Declaration of these truths and these rights came from the long tradition of natural law, which holds that there is a “higher law” of right and wrong from which human law should be derived. Therefore, government, any government, would be instituted with a primary purpose to SECURE THOSE RIGHTS, those natural rights, those unalienable rights, those self-evident rights, chief of which are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. How unfortunate today that so many of those rights, privileges, and truths, are taken for granted, assumed, unappreciated. Perhaps they never will be fully understood or appreciated until such time as they are taken away. Those 56 men, those authors of the DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE, told the 13 colonies and the world at large at the end of the document this very sacred oath:AND FOR THE SUPPORT OF THIS DECLARATION, WITH A FIRM RELIANCE ONTHE PROTECTION OF DIVINE PROVIDENCE, WE MUTUALY PLEDGE TO EACH OTHER OUR LIVES, OUR FORTUNES, AND OUR SACRED HONOR.These 56 men were so determined to effectuate the freedom of the colonies, the freedoms in which they believed for them and all mankind, the freedom from Great Britain and the freedom among many others to freely pursue life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. They pledged their lives for that purpose. They were willing to die, if necessary, to achieve these goals. They were willing to give up everything, their fortunes, their property, anything and everything if necessary. And most importantly, perhaps, as a moment of honor, they would never deviate in any way from this FREEDOM MISSION. That was real patriotism. How wonderful it would be if that were, once again, to be the pledge, the oath, the statement of the sacred honor of close to 400 million Americans, the privileged people who live in and enjoy the fruits and blessings of this great country. The day may come, the day may be near, when we who love freedom will need indeed to give our lives, our fortunes, and all we have for the freedoms we so richly enjoy.Thank you, America, and God Bless America!
We're officially kicking off the second half of 2025 with the July SITREP! It's Fourth of July weekend, and with that, comes obviously the fantastic celebration by all Americans (mostly) of our fight as armed and well regulated civilians fighting for independence and to defeat tyranny. Now, in the last several decades, that notion does seem to have faded a bit over time, but it's an ideal that is uniquely American, and one that holds more value than many realize. I do my best to articulate my own thoughts and feelings around the holiday and why it's so important that we celebrate it now, and for many years to come. Additionally, we have terrible flooding in parts of Texas impacting thousands of families and once more, we as a community are called on for help and support. There's some information on who to reach out to as well as a brief update on the information that I've been able to gather over just these last few days. Hope everyone has enjoyed the holiday weekend, and God Bless America!Visit our sponsors! Our Patreon - www.patreon.com/prepared_mindset_podCustom Night Vision - www.customnightvision.comOne Hundred Concepts - www.onehundredconcepts.com
We are very pleased to share a special Fourth of July edition of COBT. Earlier in the week, we had the opportunity to tour the Lone Star Flight Museum (LSFM) and to sit down with Jerry Scott, LSFM's Chief Operating Officer and Director of Flight Operations. The museum draws visitors from all over the world and features flying historical aircraft, many of them iconic military planes. Jerry was named COO in June 2024 and has 40 years of experience in aviation sales as well as people, project, and logistics management. He previously served as a volunteer at LSFM for 15 years and as a crew chief and plane captain for several of the museum's aircraft. For our conversation, we sat right next to a B-25, the same type of aircraft flown by Jimmy Doolittle and his squadron. This particular plane has been meticulously restored to the exact standards of the Doolittle Raiders' aircraft, making it an especially unique setting for our discussion. We were thrilled to visit with Jerry and to get to spend time with the team at the museum. Special thanks to LSFM's CEO Anna Hawley for all her help in particular. In our conversation, we explore the parallels between modern military missions and World War II operations, the extraordinary bravery of the Doolittle Raiders, the unique similarity of the Doolittle mission to the recent US strikes on Iran, and Jerry's personal journey and passion for aviation. We discuss LSFM's mission to honor veterans and preserve their stories for future generations through a living, flying museum, the pilot training progression required to fly historic aircraft, the museum's move from Galveston to Ellington Field after Hurricane Ike, and the critical role of volunteers in keeping the operations running. Jerry shares insights into the museum's reach, welcoming over 100,000 visitors annually, its rotating aircraft exhibits, and its broader community impact through educational programs and events. We reflect on Jimmy Doolittle's legacy, the spirit of innovation and sacrifice that defines American aviation history, and the museum's vision to inspire future leaders. As mentioned, the “Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo” film is available on Amazon Prime (linked here). A huge thank you to Jerry and the team at LSFM for their support in making today's episode possible. We highly recommend planning a trip to the museum to see the aircraft up close! To start the show, Mike Bradley highlighted a handful of key events that influenced markets in 1H25 including President Trump's import tariffs (Day of Liberation), Trump's One Big Beautiful Budget Bill (OBBB), the Israeli-Iranian War/U.S. strike on Iranian nuclear facilities and OPEC's substantial/surprising accelerated oil output hikes. For our Canadian friends, we hope you had a fantastic Canada Day on Tuesday. For everyone celebrating the Fourth today, we hope you have a great day filled with food, family, friends, and fun. God bless you, and God Bless America. Have a wonderful Independence Day!
NEW PODCAST: On this special solo edition of Stand Up For The Truth, Dave Wager asks a loaded question many of us don't stop to think through: What are we really asking when we sing “God Bless America”? This isn't just about waving flags or reciting patriotic songs. Dave unpacks the biblical reality that blessing always comes with responsibility. Drawing from Psalm 33:12—“Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord”—he challenges listeners to consider whether we're seeking comfort or commissioning. Have we used our blessings to glorify God and serve others, or have we settled into comfort and forgotten the Giver? From the roots of Irving Berlin's famous song to the fiery furnace of Daniel 3, Dave walks us through what true loyalty looks like—loyalty to God first, even when national pride gets loud. Patriotism isn't wrong, he says, as long as it doesn't eclipse obedience to the Lord. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego didn't start a rebellion, but they drew a clear line. The call is the same for us today: respect authority, pray for leaders, and live lives marked by godliness and dignity—but never bow to what contradicts God's Word.

Pastor Kenny Bruce shares a special message from Psalm 80 about America's need for revival.
FREEDOM!We are, America is, the home, the land of the:BRAVE AND THE FREE.We are lovers of freedom. It is, you could say, in our genes. We inherited that love of freedom from those who founded our great country, fought against the oppressors more than two centuries ago and built the foundation for the FREEDOMS we now enjoy today. Give us, we say with that great statesman and our forefather Patrick Henry, give us that LIBERTY or if that is taken away, give us death for there is no real life without freedom. For us, America is in fact exceptional no matter the indifferent attitude of Barack Hussein Obama who thinks that America is no more exceptional than any other country! But all of America and we the people are exceptional in so many ways, including our way of life and our lifestyle. Everything is okay down to the last sentence and raise and champion our great flag, and wear the American flag pin proudly, especially in the world of academia which thinks the American flag is a symbol for racism and xenophobia rather than exceptionalism. And now, we should take quality time to honor the founding documents which make us great, namely our Constitution, our Bill of Rights and our Declaration of Independence. We should honor these incredible documents by reading them, studying their content, understanding the values therein and resolving as the authors of these documents did, and honor our forefathers who provided them for us recommitting to them and the world at large that we the people will protect and preserve the freedoms contained therein, even to the laying down of our lives. In this day, there are so many who would CHANGE what we have, or even more radically so, eliminate it. There seems to be an ever-growing number of those in our very own country with little or no respect for our great founding documents, our freedoms, the principles by which we have lived and built THE GREAT SOCIETY, and especially what America has been, our glorious history. They the un-Americans wish to eliminate or erode so many of our freedoms and move this great country toward socialism. THEY are the enemy inside and THEY must be stopped. We the people, true Constitutional Americans energized and emboldened by our founding documents and founding fathers must make certain we do what is right for our great country, and as true patriots, protect and defend our freedoms as never before. We should do everything humanly possible to prevent socialism of any kind in thought or deed.We should remember the words of that great statesman, a founding father himself, Benjamin Franklin, who said, when asked, that he and his fellow revolutionaries have given us, Americans then and now, a REPUBLIC. Not a Democracy, but a Republic. Franklin went on to warn us then and now that this Republic was FRAGILE, and needed at all times to be protected with vigilance, vigor and valor. That this Republic of the combined United States could never be taken for granted. Nor could any citizen assume it would go on, and on. For freedom, for Franklin and the fathers, was a precious right that could only be sustained by watchful, involved and proactive citizens. We who would live in this free country and enjoy its immense freedoms must at all times be:WATCHMEN AND WOMEN ON THE WALLSNot talk, debate or discussion, but ACTION, actively working to protect our freedoms and our way of life, willing to die in the fray if necessary. Would you be willing to die, to lay all on the altar in the cause of freedom? What would you do if ISIS or jihadists attacked America and threatened harm to your family and you? What would you do? Our forefathers never gave the matter a second thought. They, in Second Amendment fashion, took up arms to defend their country, their freedoms and their family. Would you?In fact, we AMERICANS should be so proud of our country, and our freedoms, that we as a nation are ready at all times to help others in the cause of freedom. We gave the lives of millions of young American men and women to others in the cause of freedom. Witness World War II. One Robert Whiting, an elderly gentleman 83 years young arrived in Paris by airplane. At French customs, it took him several minutes to locate his passport. The Customs Officer with sarcasm and disdain asked Mr. Whiting:“You have been to France before, Monsieur?”Mr. Whiting answered, yes he had and the smart aleck French official replied pompously:“Then you should know enough to have your passport ready!”Mr. Whiting then stared this official in the eye and said the following:“The last time I was here I didn't have to show my passport.”To which the French Customs Official replied:“Impossible! Americans always have to show passports on arrival in France!”Mr. Whiting gave this arrogant Frenchman a long hard look and he proudly stated:“Well, when I came ashore at Omaha Beach on D-Day in 1944 to help liberate this country, I couldn't find a single Frenchman to show a passport to!”You could have heard a pin drop. God bless America and God bless Mr. Whiting. And yet another instance of a proud American at work. When in England at a fairly large conference, Secretary of State Colin Powell was asked by the Arch Bishop of Canterbury if America's plans for Iraq were simply a rationalization for empire building or LAND-GRABBING by George Bush as American soldiers went to war. Powell simply answered by saying:“Over the years, the United States has sent many of its fine young men and women into great peril to fight for FREEDOM beyond our borders. The only amount of land we have ever asked for in return is enough to bury those who did not return.”All attending that conference were deadly silent. Well said, Mr. Powell, well said as a proud American. There was once a conference in France when a number of international engineers were taking part, including French and American. One of the French engineers said the following:“Have you heard the latest dumb stunt Bush has done? He has sent an aircraft carrier to Indonesia to help the tsunami victims. What does he intend to do, bomb them?”Those in attendance snickered and jeered. That is, until an engineer from the Boeing company in America stood up and proudly stated:“Our aircraft carriers have three hospitals on board that can treat several hundred people. They are nuclear powered and can supply emergency electrical power to shore facilities. They have three cafeterias with the capacity to feed 3,000 people three meals a day. They can produce several thousand gallons of fresh water from sea water each day. They carry half a dozen helicopters for use in transporting victims and the injured to and from their flight deck. We have eleven such aircraft carriers. How many does France have?”You could have heard a pin drop. And again, a U.S. Naval Admiral was attending a naval conference that included admirals from the united states, England, Canada, Australia and France. Every one in attendance was conversing in English. Suddenly a French Admiral complained the Europeans learn many languages but Americans learn only English. This French Admiral arrogantly and pompously said:“Why is that we always have to speak English in these conferences rather than speaking French?”The American United States Naval Admiral stood up proudly and replied:“Maybe it is because the Brits, Canadians, Aussies and Americans arranged it so that you would not have to speak German!”The room was deadly silent. So, whether here at home or anywhere abroad, anywhere in the world, it is our privilege, our duty, our passion to protect FREEDOM at every turn. That freedom means for us and ALL IN THE WORLD the fundamental rights, the God-given rights to:LIFELIBERTYTHE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESSIt is our right to live life free, with maximum freedom. It is our right to live and champion liberty everywhere. And, it is our right to pursue happiness as we define that, as free individuals, to pursue life legally and lovingly as WE choose. May it always be so, but it only can be if we are willing to do anything possible to protect those freedoms. ANYTHING! Are you?So now, this Independence week, culminating in the great day July 4, Independence Day, we should honor America, this great country in which we are privileged to live. We should honor all things American and we should honor our flag as a symbol of who we are and what we believe. There are those who would desecrate or cause to be irrelevant the great stars and stripes. There was the action of the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) which banned the wearing of the American flag as a lapel pin or otherwise in clothing because the flag in their view was controversial and represented the causes of certain conservatives. How tragic, how ridiculous, how un-American the actions of the American Broadcasting Company. There are times when our President, our Congress, our leading citizens simply do not wear or honor the flag or any other symbol of all great things American. We the people should find all such conduct unacceptable and we should protest. The greatest form of protest is to protect, preserve and defend our freedoms and the symbol of those freedoms, the great American flag, the perfect symbol of our independence and the finest possible expression of freedom on the great day July 4, Independence Day. Do just that loudly and proudly my fellow citizens.Think carefully, my fellow Americans, about the precious freedoms granted by your Constitution and YOUR Bill of Rights. Remember that you are guaranteed the right to freedom of religion, to worship and practice religion as you please. You are guaranteed the right to free speech, to speak as you wish at anytime, anywhere, with any words. You are guaranteed the right to freely assemble, to petition, to print in press or on the Internet. YOU ARE GUARANTEED THOSE RIGHTS! You are guaranteed the right to bear arms, to purchase, own and use them for pleasure or in self-defense. You are guaranteed the right against governmental illegal search and seizure. You are guaranteed the right a trial by a jury of your peers rather than to be summarily convicted by any governmental agency. You are guaranteed the right to counsel if you can not afford one when charged with a crime. You are guaranteed the right to vote. You are guaranteed to pursue life, liberty and happiness as you wish! You are guaranteed by YOUR Constitution and Bill of Rights the highest and best form of living and lifestyle the world has ever known! You should give thanks for America, for all that it was, is and can be in the future if YOU as Benjamin Franklin so well said standup and do everything possible to KEEP IT that is the great experiment in freedom which our founding fathers intended. Please join with me this Independence Week, this Freedom Week and especially on the set-aside day for freedom celebration, namely July 4 in pledging once again our allegiance to this great country. Please join me in these great words which honor America:I pledge allegianceto the Flagof the United States of Americaand to the Republic for which it standsone nationindivisiblewith liberty and justicefor all!I ask humbly and lovingly that GOD BLESS AMERICA.And I ask humbly as well that GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY!There is only one America. Keep it that way!

Our gathered congregation will sing “God Bless America” on both of these Sundays. But the question for us today is, “When Can God Bless America?” For more information on the Campground, insider tips and FAQ's, listen to our General Ocean Lakes Podcast, Campground Conversations.

We start by talking about the origins of the word “bitch”, how it relates to dog and slut, how it acquired the meaning of “unpleasant woman”, and how meanings in general change over time. We also discuss how it has been used as a pejorative against feminists, and how the word was reclaimed by them. We talk about the sexist ideas it is associated with, how it relates to the c-word, how it is used to insult men, and how it ties to gender roles. We also talk about the expression “son of a bitch”, and how people use the word “bitch” today.--A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: PER HELGE LARSEN, JERRY MULLER, BERNARDO SEIXAS, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, PHIL KAVANAGH, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, FERGAL CUSSEN, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, ROMAIN ROCH, DIEGO LONDOÑO CORREA, YANICK PUNTER, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, ADAM HUNT, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, NELLEKE BAK, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, PAULO TOLENTINO, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, EDWARD HALL, HEDIN BRØNNER, DOUGLAS FRY, FRANCA BORTOLOTTI, GABRIEL PONS CORTÈS, URSULA LITZCKE, SCOTT, ZACHARY FISH, TIM DUFFY, SUNNY SMITH, JON WISMAN, WILLIAM BUCKNER, PAUL-GEORGE ARNAUD, LUKE GLOWACKI, GEORGIOS THEOPHANOUS, CHRIS WILLIAMSON, PETER WOLOSZYN, DAVID WILLIAMS, DIOGO COSTA, ALEX CHAU, AMAURI MARTÍNEZ, CORALIE CHEVALLIER, BANGALORE ATHEISTS, LARRY D. If you grew up in the 1960s or ‘70s, it seemed like many of the songs on the radio were answering other songs on the radio.Roger Miller sang, “King of the Road,” and Jody Miller answered it with “Queen of the House.” Barry McGuire sang “Eve of Destruction,” only to be called out by a group named The Spokesmen with their "Dawn of Correction.” Merle Haggard sang of the “Okie from Muskogee” and drew a prompt reply from The Youngbloods' “Hippie from Olema.”Big NamesSome famous songsmiths also penned answer songs. In 1966, for instance, Bob Dylan's “4th Time Around” was a rather famous response to The Beatles' “Norwegian Wood” of the previous year. And Bob's first hero, Woody Guthrie, is said to have written his greatest song, “This Land Is Your Land,” in 1940 as an answer to Irving Berlin's “God Bless America.” (In fact, Woody originally called his composition "God Blessed America for Me.”)In 1959, one of Carole King's first songs was one she wrote as a reply to Annette Funicello's “Tall Paul.” It contained a classic line, “You can keep Tall Paul / I'll take Short Mort."Meat Loaf wrote “Two Out of Three Ain't Bad” in 1977 as an answer to Elvis Presley's 1956 hit “I Want You, I Need You, I Love You.”And some artists even recorded answers to their own songs. In 1963, for instance, Lesley Gore released “It's My Party,” followed by “Judy's Turn to Cry.” Both of the tunes appeared on Gore's debut album I'll Cry If I Want To.Country artists can get a bit edgy with their call and response. Loretta Lynn's 1967 release of “Don't Come Home a-Drinkin' (With Lovin' on Your Mind)” prompted a quick retort from Jay Lee Webb, called, "I Come Home A-Drinkin' (To a Worn-Out Wife Like You).”And some answer songs turned into multi-player comic discourses. For instance, in 1972, The Last Poets' "When the Revolution Comes” inspired Gil Scott-Heron to wax “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,” which in turn led to Roy Clark's recording “The Lawrence Welk-Hee Haw Counter-Revolution Polka.”The Flood's FavMeanwhile, in the Floodisphere, the best-loved answer song comes from a pair of tunes written more than a hundred years ago.As we reported here earlier, W.C. Handy's 1915 classic “Yellow Dog Blues” — a melodic mainstay that reaches from the glory days of Bessie Smith and Louis Armstrong all the way to today's trad jazz standard bearers — was actually composed as an answer to Shelton Brooks' wonderful 1913 composition called, “I Wonder Where My Easy Rider's Gone.” In recent back-to-back weekly rehearsals, The Flood has revisited both tunes. First came the Brooks original two weeks ago, then, last week, the guys turned to Handy's dandy reply. In The Flood's estimation, “Yellow Dog Blues” is the best of the pair. There are a lot of train songs out there, but none of them takes its riders quite as far as this one. Come along to where “the Southern cross the Yellow Dog!”More, You Say?Finally, if blues is your bag and you want to extend your Friday foray into Floodery, tune in the Blues Channel on the band's free Radio Floodango music streaming service. This week will see ‘World Tariff Day' – as those in Westminster are not-so-excitedly calling Wednesday – when Donald Trump will announce a wave of new tariffs. Trump is expected to reveal plans for reciprocal tariffs aimed at addressing what he sees as an ongoing trade imbalance between the US and other countries. He argues that it is ‘finally time for the Good Ol' USA to get some of that MONEY, and RESPECT, BACK. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!'. It had looked as though the Prime Minister's softly-softly approach to US relations was working and that we might avoid Trump's levies... that was until the UK was included in the 25 per cent tariff on cars and auto parts imported into the US, along with steel. There is some hope, however. Donald Trump and Keir Starmer had a call last night in which they spoke about a limited free trade deal. The pair ‘discussed the productive negotiations between their respective teams on a UK–US economic prosperity deal, agreeing that these will continue at pace this week'. It is a knotty situation for the Prime Minister because if he cannot charm his way back into the US's good books, he will face more calls to get tough on Donald and threaten retaliatory tariffs. What's the mood in Westminster? And – more importantly – what's the mood in Washington? James Heale speaks to Katy Balls and Kate Andrews. Produced by Oscar Edmondson.

“Is Trump interested in being Constitutionally faithful?” (Mark Labberton, from this episode) “What we're watching here is the operation of the will of an individual on the system, and the system is really meant to answer to the negotiated will of a plural body.” (Yuval Levin, from this episode) “ I think character is destiny, especially in the American presidency, because the presidency really is one person.” (Yuval Levin, from this episode) The transition of power from one presidential administration to another always has the potential for turbulence—often a surreal, perplexing, or disorienting process. But is there anything peculiar or problematic about the opening days of Donald Trump's second term in office? Is there anything unconstitutional? In this episode, Mark Labberton welcomes back Yuval Levin for a conversation about the political and social impact of Donald Trump's first month in office in light of Constitutional law and the Separation of Powers. Yuval Levin is the director of Social, Cultural, and Constitutional Studies at the American Enterprise Institute, where he also holds the Beth and Ravenel Currie Chair in Public Policy. His latest book is American Covenant: How the Constitution Unified Our Nation—and Could Again. He's founder of National Affairs, senior editor at The New Atlantis, a contributing editor of National Review, and contributing opinion writer at the New York Times. Together they discuss: The authority of the Constitution over the presidency The importance of character in the office of the president The separation of powers and the threat of presidential overreach What American citizens should be genuinely worried about right now The importance of cross-partisan policymaking and a variety of political voices Why we should worry, but not panic About Yuval Levin Yuval Levin is the director of Social, Cultural, and Constitutional Studies at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), where he also holds the Beth and Ravenel Curry Chair in Public Policy. The founder and editor of National Affairs, he is also a senior editor at The New Atlantis, a contributing editor at National Review, and a contributing opinion writer at the New York Times. At AEI, Levin and scholars in the Social, Cultural, and Constitutional Studies research division study the foundations of self-government and the future of law, regulation, and constitutionalism. They also explore the state of American social, political, and civic life, focusing on the preconditions necessary for family, community, and country to flourish. Levin served as a member of the White House domestic policy staff under President George W. Bush. He was also executive director of the President's Council on Bioethics and a congressional staffer at the member, committee, and leadership levels. In addition to being interviewed frequently on radio and television, Levin has published essays and articles in numerous publications, including Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, The Atlantic, and Commentary. He is the author of several books on political theory and public policy, most recently American Covenant: How the Constitution Unified Our Nation – and Could Again (Basic Books, 2024). He holds an MA and PhD from the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago. Show Notes A time of “presidential gigantism” “Is Trump interested in being Constitutionally faithful?” Pluralism and vigorous debate Swamping a weak, divided Congress Separation of Powers Legislature vs Executive Branch “ Nobody really ever expected the president to be representative. Presidents are elected to be accountable. Congress is elected to be representative.” “What we're watching here is the operation of the will of an individual on the system, and the system is really meant to answer to the negotiated will of a plural body.” Performative nature of political roles “Random grab-bag of power plays.” Fear of a “lawless president” “The beginning of a new administration is unavoidably a little surreal.” “ It's important not to over-read the strength that's evident at the outset here because we don't really know how much of this will play out.” Elon Musk as Pseudo-President “ The president does command the executive branch. On the other hand, the president does not command the federal government.” “ When the question is, does the president have to follow the law, the answer to that is going to be yes.” Is the Supreme Court going to keep Trump in check? Overturning Chevron deference “Character is destiny.” “ I think character is destiny, especially in the American presidency, because the presidency really is one person.” “ The fact that character's destiny in the presidency is not good news for Donald Trump and is not good news for the country while he is president because the biggest problem with Trump is his character, is the lack of a sense of personal responsibility and self restraint, the lack of a respect for the need for stability and coherence in leadership, And to have an administration that has that character is going to challenge our system and I think just create problems for the country in some important ways.” ”In moments of decision and crisis, it's the president's character that determines how things go.” “ My biggest worry about Trump is not one policy or another. There's some I like and some I don't. But it's that ultimately the presidency is one person, and this one person is just not a good fit for that office.” Presidential overreach Loyalty tests and punishment “ What the president really does is make hard decisions.” Having room for opposition “Administration is impossible when people on the ground are afraid to tell you what's going on.” Alarm Bells First: “The possibility of the administration just willfully ignoring a court order.” Second: “Ignoring signals of trouble, ignoring dissent, ignoring opposing voices, a sense that they're ignoring reality and pretending things are happening that aren't. That's very dangerous in the presidency.” Third: “It's also worth worrying about the tendency for vengeance and for personal vendettas for using the power of prosecution and of law enforcement for political purposes, even for personal purposes.” Character and mindset Congress has 535 people. The presidency comes down to one person. Dangers on the horizon Checks and balances Laying the groundwork for a third Trump term? “On the whole our institutions have proven fairly strong.” “It is better to worry than to panic. Worry lets you make distinctions …” Yuval Levin's American Covenant: How the Constitution Unified Our Nation—and Could Again What is the voice of citizenship right now? Appropriations “Governors are some of the sanest people in our politics in this moment.” “I don't think that the lesson of Trump's first term should be that people who oppose him should just sit it out and wait. I think the lesson on the contrary is that the Trump administration does respond to pressure.” “Policy change should happen through cross partisan negotiation in Congress.” “President Trump has said, for example, that in his first month in office, he wants to have met every house Republican.” A variety of voices “In a way, the mindset of what's the thing we would do if we could magically do anything is the problem, not the solution. And it's how Donald Trump is thinking, what would I do if I were the emperor? I think the most important thing in this moment is for him to realize that he is not the emperor, and that our system never lets us do that thing we would want to do. That's the beauty of the system.” “The other great political question. What can I get done that I also want to achieve?” “God Bless America.” Production Credits Conversing is produced and distributed in partnership with Comment Magazine and Fuller Seminary.

[SEGMENT 1-1] Christmas songs repeat 2023 [SEGMENT 1-2] Learn to enjoy Christmas It's Christmas Day and I hope you are enjoying life with friends and family. And if you happen to be alone, then thank you for including me in your Christmas, and know that I am with you in spirit. When I was an engineer, I had a friend who hated the holidays, especially Christmas. I thought he was kidding, but each year he got very depressed at this time. It was so difficult for me to understand this, because I'm a “cup half filled” person. What was so intriguing to me is that any other time of year, this guy was just like me. He was truly the Merry Mexican. One of the technicians on my engineering team, and the guy was a joy to be around…except during the holidays. In a way I get it. The most wonderful time of the year for God-loving people is almost approached with trepidation. It's the time of year to keep your mouth shut. Yes, we've spent all year fighting the lunatic Left, and now we're supposed to gather around the dinner table, smiling politely as Aunt Karen waxes poetic about “how presidential” Gavin Newsom looks in a windbreaker. The Unbearable Expectations of Christmas Christmas is supposed to be festive, but for many, it's a pressure cooker of unrealistic expectations. Let's start with the car commercials. Who are these people getting luxury cars with big red bows? I swear, I've never met anyone who's walked outside on Christmas morning and found a shiny new Lexus in the driveway. Not one. This isn't a gift—it's a financial ambush. “Merry Christmas, honey! Here's a monthly car payment the size of our mortgage.” Also, can we talk about the fact that Hollywood now feels obligated to diversify these commercials? Oh, look, it's Jamal and Shanice, living their best lives in matching sweaters, unwrapping a BMW. I'm not saying it hasn't happened, but let's not pretend this is a universal experience. For most of us, the biggest thing we're unwrapping is the family pack of socks from Costco. New Year's Resolutions: The Annual Lie And then there's New Year's. We treat it like a fresh start, even though it's literally just the day after December 31. “This year, I'm going to the gym!” Sure, you are, Karen. Right after you finish the leftover pecan pie and delete Netflix. Why do we lie to ourselves like this? The same people who couldn't manage to walk their dog more than twice in 2023 are now planning to train for a marathon. Stop it. Holidays with the Left But let's get to the real Christmas buzzkill: Leftists. From Thanksgiving onward, we Conservatives are given a strict set of holiday rules. Don't wear your MAGA hat to dinner. Don't mention Trump. Don't bring up Biden unless you're praising his “resilience.” It's like the PC police have infiltrated our homes, ready to pounce if you so much as hum “God Bless America.” Even in victory—and Trump's 2024 win was a victory for America, the world, and maybe even Mars—we're told to tone it down. “Don't gloat,” they say. Meanwhile, they've spent four years calling us racists, fascists, and worse. Well, guess what, Aunt Karen? This Christmas, I'm drinking eggnog from my TKJN Trump Nickname mug and flaunting my Trumpiness like a MAGA elf at the North Pole. Why Conservatives Need Christmas Here's the thing: We Conservatives need Christmas. It's our time to recharge, to celebrate faith, family, and freedom. While the Left spends the season trying to cancel Rudolph for being “problematic” (too red, obviously Republican), we're out here keeping the traditions alive. Caroling? Check. Nativity scenes? Double check. Loudly pointing out that Jesus was not a socialist? Triple check. And let's not forget, Christmas is the ultimate reminder that good triumphs over evil. It's like a Hallmark movie on steroids. The world needed a savior, and boom, Jesus arrived. And in the spirit of that divine intervention, let's celebrate another miracle: Trump saved us from Bidenomics, open borders, and the Ministry of Truth. You better believe that's worth a toast. Dealing with the Lunatics Potential Funny AdditionsA fake Christmas letter from the DNC: “Dear Conservatives, Please don't celebrate too loudly. It's making us look bad.”A MAGA-themed Christmas song parody: “It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Freedom.”A holiday card: “All I want for Christmas is four more years!” I hope today you have on your Trump MAGA hat, drink from your TKJN Trump Nickname mug, and flaunt your “Trumpiness” like Trumpian elves. [SEGMENT 1-3] Christmas toys repeat 2023 [SEGMENT 1-4] Government trophy girlfriend I was thinking about this, and I've said many times that it's the rough patches in life that teach you lessons. You learn little from the good times. That's why so many billionaires' kids end up in rehab. And plastic surgeons feast on the insecurities of their wives. Money can't buy you everything, but it does keep the kids close. Government is like that billionaire's kid. It's gotten so much without doing anything that now it expects it. And no matter how badly government behaves or performs, it wants what it wants. Trauma and Government Incompetence: A Match Made in Dysfunction And trauma also unites us, which is why we revolted against our government in the last election. We finally dealt with the trauma. Similarly, government incompetence echoes life's trauma—it unites us in shared disbelief. And much like those trauma support groups, we form bonds over mutual suffering:DMV Survivors Anonymous.Post Office PTSD Support.TSA Group Therapy: “Hi, my name is Kevin, and I was randomly selected for a cavity search.”The People Who Really Show Up Government is that chic we met at the bar who was HOT. She met us at our financial best, not when we were trying to make it. So we took our arm-candy all over the world, galivanting. And when we went to Thailand for her plastic surgery, she denied the bag with the coke in it was hers, and we had to do her time in that Thai prison. She headed straight to the yacht in Monaco to meet up with some dude she met at the airport while you were detained. Who did you call to get you out. That fat girl you ghosted in college after that one night you pretend didn't happen. And that girl jumped on a plane to Thailand to get you an attorney with her life savings. Refusing to return to America until you are free, she's now working as a stripper to pay off guards in the Thai prison to keep you from being violated. Meanwhile, your trophy girlfriend, aka the government, doesn't even remember your name. The Hilariously Dysfunctional Government Wish List I've been thinking a lot about what government should actually be doing for us. Instead of wasting money on things like gender-neutral snowplows or building sandcastles for crabs in Martha's Vineyard, why not tackle the real issues? You know, stuff that would actually make life better—or at least less absurd. The Government and Cancer: We Know You Have the Cure Let's start with the big one: curing cancer. We've mapped the human genome, people. We've sent robots to Mars, created ChatGPT, and even taught a few people on TikTok how to read. But you're telling me we still can't cure cancer? Please. I know the cure exists, probably stored in a climate-controlled lab in Beijing next to Hunter Biden's misplaced laptop. Only the richest people in the world get access to it, while the rest of us are out here doing 5Ks in pink tutus, hoping our donation covers a box of Band-Aids for a research center. And diabetes? Oh, that's cured too. But apparently, it's reserved for Silicon Valley execs who are on a raw avocado and crypto diet. Meanwhile, the rest of us are stuck playing Russian roulette with insulin prices.Real Science We Need Forget sending billionaires to space or making vegan leather from mushrooms. How about some practical science for regular folks? The Eyebrow That Won't Quit: I have this one eyebrow hair that grows faster than my afro did in the ‘70s. Can someone in a lab coat take five minutes away from studying the mating habits of fire ants to fix this?Butt Hair Be Gone: Why do we have hair growing in places nobody wants it? Between the ears, the nose, and—let's just say it—the nether regions, I'm starting to think nature is just trolling us. And while we're at it, does my nose hair have to turn gray? Nothing screams “distinguished gentleman” like a silvery vine hanging out of your nostril.Anti-Sweat Technology: Forget curing male-pattern baldness. I'd rather have a government-funded lotion that stops my pits from looking like Niagara Falls every summer. Priorities, people.Free Wi-Fi and No Toll Roads: Is That Too Much to Ask? Here's another idea: free Wi-Fi everywhere. If we can find funding for shrimp on treadmills (true story—Google it), then we can surely give Americans free internet access. You know, so we can stream cat videos in peace without selling our souls to Comcast. And toll roads? Enough already. We've paid for these roads ten times over. What are they paving these highways with, Gucci loafers? If the government insists on charging us to drive on roads we already own, the least they could do is throw in a free car wash or a pack of gum.Government Waste: You Can't Make This Up The real comedy gold lies in what the government is spending our money on. We the people so privileged to live in America have so much to be thankful for. God has allowed us to live in the greatest nation in human history, in my opinion. How grateful we should be. Thanks be unto God for His incredible gifts to mankind. There are so many things to be thankful for. And we should approach this wonderful time of year with gratitude and Thanksgiving Day, and Thanksgiving week, and all year long, we should:GIVE THANKSAnd you are thankful, are you not my fellow Americans, for so much, so much that you have, so many opportunities that you have, and the life which God has given you to lead? You are thankful and grateful, are you not?Our forefathers, as they established America one-of-a-kind, the pilgrims and others, did exactly that:THEY GAVE THANKS OVER AND AGAINThose who came first to America brought with them a deeply rooted sense of gratitude for all good things. They were grateful to God for everything, the Great Giver of all things. They thanked their God with works and prayers. They sat aside a day in the fall, after harvest, to be especially thankful for all that God's earth had bestowed. They sat aside Thanksgiving Day to be grateful and to celebrate. The harvest reap assured them of survival and prosperity during the harsh winter to come and they were grateful. The earth gave and they harvested. The earth bestowed the bounty of God and they reaped the harvest, with gratitude and with thanksgiving. Even as they, the first ones here, thanked the God Creator for these unspeakable, incredible gifts, so should we.So, amidst the fun and fellowship of Thanksgiving Day and week, we should set aside time to be grateful. We should tell others of our gratitude and in a world so often negative and spiteful, let our attitude be positive and think about those things which are good, for there are so many of them. When households and humans the world over die every day, we should be grateful for life, for living, and for the lifestyle we enjoy. Opportunity for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness is everywhere, thanks be to God. We can start by serving HIM, and others. We can work and be productive. We can learn and train. We can earn, and profit, and grow, grow personally and professionally in so many ways. And we can do that every day, EVERY DAY, and especially this day which the Lord hath made. Thanks be to God for opportunity, for the freedom which creates that opportunity. So we celebrate life and we who are pro–life pray that there may be no abortion. That life, man and woman, and family will be governed by Biblical principles. That the elderly will be loved and live as long as possible. That we will educate, and train up our young in the right ways so that when they are mature, they will take responsibility for our great country, protect the American way, and revive us again with a deep sense of morality. How thankful so many of us would be for such a revival, the revival of love and respect for our Lord and our great country. We should help them learn the lessons of grateful hearts. And surely, we should be grateful for family and friends, should we not? Those closest to us may be the least appreciated. We should share our love with them and tell them our feelings. We should thank them, and love them for all that they do and all that they are. There are those who do so much, give so much to us without thanks. Like a loving spouse. And our children, spreading their love and joy. And for our friends, ready in our time of need, sharing life with us and making it better. We should not only be thankful for all of them, but tell them so, and share the love we feel for them. So that we honor our Lord at Thanksgiving not only with love for HIM, but for others as well, our neighbors, even as we love ourselves. If you were to see them, be with them perhaps for the last time, what would you say? Thanksgiving gives you the opportunity to say it.And surely we are thankful for our freedoms, are we not? For our great Constitution, our Bill of Rights, our Declaration of Independence, our Rule of Law at work, and the freedom we enjoy to pursue life, liberty and happiness as we choose. No one, no entity, no government can tell us what to do. We can define our own happiness and pursue it as we wish. We can feel the joy of living as we wish and perhaps as much as anything at this special time, we should be thankful, THANKFUL for this. And, surely Thanksgiving gives us the opportunity to CELEBRATE, and joyfully so. Most of us can enjoy wonderful food, and the aromas of turkey, stuffing, and cranberry sauce. How good it would be if we could make certain that others less fortunate could enjoy what we enjoy as well. We should be grateful Thanksgiving Day, and week and all year long for the food of the harvest we enjoy as our forefathers did. Even as we partake in the fellowship of family and friends, and the fun and good times of the day, and of course for so many the football, as we eat the bread of the day, we should remember the BREAD OF LIFE, the One who came for us and makes life so worth living. Even as we enjoy the fruits of the plains, so we should rejoice even more in the fruits of the Spirit. In all things, giving thanks, THANKS to the God who indeed blesses America. As a young boy at Thanksgiving, our family traditionally traveled to a local orphanage. There we sang and witnessed to them in word and song, brought them joy and blessings, and provided them with Thanksgiving food. Our family Thanksgiving Day started with that special blessing for them, and even more so for us. Even as we gave, we got more in return. Then, back home where our family tradition included a spirited touch football game on the front lawn, more games, more fun, more fellowship, morelaughter, and more joy. The joy of the Lord was abundant in our household and we were grateful, thankful to God for our father and mother, for our home, for food, and for everything we were given. We were safe and secure, wrapped in the arms of love and joy. How wonderful that was.And we think of the world at large. Wars and rumors of wars. ISIS kills without reason. Terrorism abounds, and the threat of that even in our own country. There is North Korea with incredible nuclear capability, seemingly ready to strike even our beloved America. And Iran, and Russia, and China, so that the world is at war or gets ready for it. We have been ordained, and privileged to live in these times, perhaps the end times which should cause us to be even more thankful for what we have, never taking for granted or assuming the future but living with thanks for this very day and the opportunities it brings. We who can and will enjoy the spirit of Thanksgiving should do our very best to spread that to a needy world. And the best of that of course is the Bread of Life, the salt and light of Jesus Christ, the first fruits of the spiritual harvest. We should spread that message the world over and give thanks to God for the opportunity. Only that message, that person can solve the world's problems, and make all humankind loving and grateful. So often, we sing or recite the words of God Bless America. For it is in fact, OUR HOME SWEET HOME. But God has already blessed America, and all of us. In so many ways, we have had the best of everything. Our lifestyle has been exceptional. America is in fact an exceptional country in so many ways and we should make certain that this, OUR LAND OF PLENTY shares that PLENTY, all that bounty with all of our fellow citizens. Thanksgiving gives us that very special opportunity to share in that way.And as we continue to pray for our great country, we should ask the God of all blessings to STAND BESIDE HER (America) and guide her, through the night and with the bright light of the Gospel at all times. For the moral light of America has been dimmed and we are no longer the beacon on the hill we once were. We should resolve at Thanksgiving to be a part of a new reformation, a new revival, grateful and thankful hearts returning to the very highest spiritual principles. That is real Thanksgiving at work. We should resolve to turn from our wrongful ways, we should pray for God's help, we should seek His guidance and wisdom, and above all, as Second Chronicles tells us, we should humble ourselves before our God and when we do all four, we will be heard and changed, fundamental moral and loving change will occur in our great country and in us. Thanksgiving should motivate us to do that. The blessings of God do in fact exist from the mountains, to the prairies, and to the oceans white with foam. God has blessed America with a uniqueness we should never take for granted. And at this wonderful season, we should be especially thankful for:OUR HOME SWEET HOMEAnd for all of those great and brave men and women who have fought and died for our freedoms, and made certain that we, who now enjoy, can live so abundantly in this our Home Sweet Home. We owe them gratitude this day and in fact at all times.Especially at Thanksgiving time, the words of that great song GOD BLESS AMERICA should ring out with love and gratitude:GOD BLESS AMERICALAND THAT I LOVESTAND BESIDE HERAND GUIDE HERTHROUGH THE NIGHT WITH THE LIGHT FROM ABOVEFROM THE MOUNTAINSTO THE PRAIRIESTO THE OCEANS WHITE WITH FOAMGOD BLESS AMERICAMY HOME SWEET HOMEI personally am so thankful for the Christian faith, for the love and salvation of Jesus Christ which is mine. I have experienced that spiritual harvest, and I have so personally enjoyed and partaken of the blessings of THE SALT AND LIGHT OF THE WORLD. Life has, for me, been so much more meaningful and I treasure and am so thankful for such wonderful blessings in my life. And so I personally say, thanks be to God for His unspeakable gift in Jesus Christ and I do hope and pray for the very same for you. May you and all mankind experience that love, and that salvation so that you can say at Thanksgiving time and every day this marvelous prayer:THANK YOU LORD FOR SAVING MY SOULTHANK YOU LORD FOR MAKING ME WHOLETHANK YOU LORD FOR GIVING TO METHY GREAT SALVATION SO FULL AND FREEAnd as well, gratefully and prayerfully, our grateful hearts should sing these wonderful words:O BEAUTIFUL FOR SPACIOUS SKIESFOR AMBER WAVES OF GRAINFOR PURPLE MOUNTAIN MAJESTIESABOVE THE FRUITED PLAINSAMERICA, AMERICAGOD SHED HIS GRACE ON THEEAND CROWN THY GOODWITH BROTHERHOODFROM SEA TO SHINING SEAAt Thanksgiving time, my fellow Americans, may God bless America and may:GOD BLESS YOU!
Our post-election thoughts following the reelection of DJT.
After Donald Trump met with President Biden yesterday in the Oval Office he returned to Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach where he led a sing along of “God Bless America” with his new right-hand man - Elon Musk. And the other day we told you about the father of three who cops say left his family behind and fled overseas to start a new life with another woman. Video has now surfaced of a man resembling the dad talking about being unhappy in his marriage and wanting to leave the country. So, is it him? Plus, police officers are used to dealing with all kinds of challenges, but this one nearly cost an elderly couple their lives. A house was engulfed in flames and the fire department wasn't there yet. But when cops burst in to save the couple, they had to battle smoke and flames - and a lot of junk! And it's one of the wildest alleged insurance scams we've ever heard. The owner of the car says it was a bear that scratched up the interior, but authorities say it wasn't a bear at all. It was him dressed up in a bear suit. Now, four suspects are charged with insurance fraud and conspiracy.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

For the last few years, patriotism has been stuck in the wheelhouse of the GOP. A Gallup poll from June shows that 60% of Republicans — compared to 29% of Democrats — express extreme pride in being American. Donald Trump wraps himself in flags at each rally, walking out to God Bless America. But recently, Democrats have been taking it back, little by little. At a rally in Philadelphia, the crowd erupted into chants of, “USA! USA! USA!” and at the DNC, former Republican representative Adam Kinzinger proclaimed, “The Democrats are as patriotic as us.” That same night, Kamala Harris claimed that Americans all have the “fundamental freedom” to clean air and water, and the right to an environment free from the pollutants that “drive the climate crisis.” A group of researchers at New York University, led by Katherine Mason, are investigating this unlikely pairing – flag-waving, steak grilling, good ol' American patriotism and climate change. They released a new study measuring the effectiveness of this combination in changing stubborn minds. This week, host Brooke Gladstone sits down with Katherine Mason to discuss the effectiveness of combining patriotism with climate change, and how to harness peoples' inherent psychological need for stability to promote social change. Last week the state of Louisiana enacted a new law requiring the Ten Commandments be posted in every classroom in every school in the state — from kindergarten to the final year of college. But it looks like Louisiana will be posting the wrong 10 Commandments. God has recently updated his original 10 from the Bible. He/She/They spoke to Michael Moore and asked him to share the New 10 Commandments 7.0 with his podcast audience… For more of Michael's work, please subscribe to his podcast at MichaelMoore.com. ******************** "God Bless America" — Kate Smith ******************** Episode underwriters: 1) Shopify.
