How do humans cope with sadness? Is it something to be avoided at all costs or part of the human condition? Should we dwell on our sadness, or flee from it? Author Helen Russell explores humanity's history of gloom, and the cultural differences in our approach to tackling it. Helen goes to Lisbon to explore their relationship with melancholy, communicated through a uniquely mournful genre of music called Fado, and an untranslatable word "saudade". She learns about the service which sends a handsome man to wipe away tears in Japan, and hears about joy, sadness and mourning with a Ghanian poet.

Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

Fado is one of the few sonic items of intangible heritage listed by UNESCO, and indeed even within Portugal there are some specific variants, including Coimbra fado, which is different from that found in Lisbon, and frequently deals with feelings of longing and love for the city itself. Inside a 14th century chapel converted into a fado house, we listen to some of the traditional sounds of fado, and reflect on how these unique items of sonic heritage contribute strongly to a sense of connection to place, to a defined identity for a city that brings its people together. Recorded by Cities and Memory.   Part of the Well-Being Cities project, a unique collaboration between Cities and Memory and C40, a global network of mayors of nearly 100 world-leading cities collaborating to deliver the urgent action needed right now to confront the climate crisis. The project was originally presented at the C40 Cities conference in Buenos Aires in 2022. Explore Well-Being Cities in full at https://citiesandmemory.com/wellbeing-cities/

Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"Our wellbeing in cities is heavily influenced by noise and sound.  We may not always associate noise with melody and harmony but listen carefully and the intangible becomes a bit more tangible. The piece here samples fado, a recognised UNESCO intangible cultural heritage which is renowned for its expressive and melancholic characteristics, a trait often mirrored in the sounds of many cities across the world. "The chord progressions from this Fado from Coimbra, Portugal are intertwined with other every day city sounds, people, animals, traffic, with the songs fading in and out of the field recordings. As noise levels continue to rise within our urban environments, the sounds of our cities begin to envelope our intangible cultural heritage, but we should not allow them to create dissonance, but ensure that they provide a harmonic counterpoint." Coimbra fado house reimagined by Moray Newlands.

This year, France is celebrating Portuguese culture. Fado music is often upheld as the essence of Lisbon, a mainstay in a rapidly changing capital city. In this special show from Portugal, Eve Jackson meets the duo reinventing the music that embodies the nation's soul. Fado Bicha are Portugal's queer anti-racist feminist musicians and they're challenging the traditional, conservative, ritualistic fado.

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Atlanta Story podcast features meaningful stories of Atlanta's builders, creators, and entrepreneurs. In this episode Jon Birdsong sits down with Kieran McGill, Owner of Fadó Irish Pub.    Kieran moved to Atlanta with plans to stay for 24 months. Today he's transitioning into his 24th year as the owner of 8 total pubs worldwide with 300 employees. In today's episode we talk about what makes Fado have the purest pour in the United States, how to build an authentic Irish Pub, what trends he sees in the industry, how he's maintained longevity in a transient industry, and much more.   The Atlanta Story is put together by the folks at Atlanta Ventures -- and we can't wait to share some of the personalities behind the brand. Atlanta Ventures invests in entrepreneurs through community, content, and capital -- most notably through our Studio with companies like Greenzie and Intown Golf Club. We believe the best entrepreneurs learn from other great artists in different fields. In this episode, we discuss… In 1996 you opened your first Fadó Irish Pub, how did you find the location? How did you transition with the streets of Buckhead? Tell us a story about your favorite night at Fadó Irish Pub? How has Buckhead changed over the years? Irish Pubs have been around for years, what makes your's so long lasting? Tell us another story about when you thought this may or may not work? You've got 8 of them, how did you decide to grow them at the rate you've done? Talk to us about how you decided to design them the way you did?  Did you know you always wanted to be an entrepreneur? When I think of Irish Beer, I think of Guinness. What has evolved over the past 30 years in the sense of Irish beer?  Can you walk us through some of the decisions you've had to make over the past 18 months to keep Fadó surviving and thriving? What got you into the industry in the first place? How and where do you continue to grow and scale your business? Talk to us about your clientele.
