Josh Brown, co-founder and CEO of Ritholtz Wealth Management, a New York City-based investment advisory firm managing over $5 billion, joins Julia La Roche on episode 199. Josh is a frequent commentator on CNBC's "Halftime Report," and the author of four books, including his newest, "You Weren't Supposed To See That: Secrets Every Investor Should Know." ✨ This episode is sponsored by Public.com. Lock in your 6.6% yield: https://public.com/julia ✨ Paid endorsement for Public Investing, Inc. Not investment advice. All investing involves the risk of loss, including loss of principal. Brokerage services for US Listed and registered securities, options and Bonds in a self-directed brokerage account are offered by Public Investing. ETFs, options and Bonds are available to US members only. *A Bond Account is a self-directed brokerage account with Public Investing, member FINRA/SIPC. Deposits into this account are used to purchase 10 fractional investment-grade and high-yield bonds. The 6.6% yield is the average annualized yield to maturity (YTM) across all ten bonds in the Bond Account, before fees, as of 9/18/2024. A bond's yield is a function of its market price, which can fluctuate, and a bond's YTM is “locked in” when the bond is purchased. Your yield at time of purchase may be different from the yield shown here. The “locked in” YTM is not guaranteed; you may receive less than the YTM of the bonds in the Bond Account if you sell any of the bonds before maturity, or if the issuer calls or defaults on the bond. While corporate bond yields should fall in reaction to a Federal Reserve rate cut, we cannot know whether that will be true of the bonds in the Bond Account, how quickly bond yields will respond, or how much they will decline. Public Investing charges a markup on each bond trade. Bond Accounts are not recommendations of individual bonds or default allocations. The bonds in the Bond Account have not been selected based on your needs or risk profile. With the second half of the year underway, we take a look at the big stories that could shape the rest of the year. The Front Office Sports writers join the show to discuss a potential sport-defining deal in golf, local and national media rights in MLB, the NBA, and NHL, the Bronny-LeBron connection in Los Angeles, and whether ESPN can hold together its volatile duo of Stephen A. Smith and Pat McAfee.
With the first half of the year behind us, the Front Office Sports writers who cover the news every day join the show for a roundtable discussion on the major stories from the first half, including the NFL's growing empire, the rise of women's sports leagues, betting scandals, the massive changes to college sports and plenty more. Plus, there will be some new quirks to the MLB Draft and Home Run Derby.
As we kick off the second half of the year today, we're only about four months away from a transformational election for our country.
New jobs data was released suggesting a changing landscape. How is the labor market doing? Walgreens stock had a very bad week. What is going on with the pharmacy retailer? We are at the halfway point in the year and market are near all time highs. Why is this worth paying attention to?
I've completed more than 100 books thus far in 2024 — a bit behind my pace from 2023, but still, not too bad. And yes, some of those books were on the short side. But not all — I've read six books this year that were 500 pages or longer. I try to balance my reading between fiction, non-fiction and inspirational books. Fiction is lagging behind in 2024, which no doubt accounts for its poor representation here. And my inspirational reading has been a bit underwhelming. But I've been on a tear recently; I read half the books on this list in the last month. Anyway, I hope my reading habits will encourage you to read more — and especially, read with a view of improving your ability to function as a Christian in an ungodly environment. 10. A Tale of Two Cities, by Charles Dickens9. Thunderstruck, by Eric Larson8. Mastery, by George Leonard7. The Impeachers, by Brenda Wineapple6. Barnum, by Robert WiGeorge Vecsey5. #743: The Acolyte Halftime Report by C.W.A
Thinking is the whole reason the “What I've Been Reading” segment exists on the podcast. In fact, it's why I read at all. It's gratifying to read things that confirm what you already were thinking, and that can be a worthwhile exercise. But usually the “thinking” to which I refer in this list is the tougher kind — getting outside my comfort zone and considering other possibilities. Sometimes I change my mind, sometimes I don't, and sometimes I just think I need to read another book. In any case, reading done right encourages you to think, and thinking is a good thing — as long as you don't think your way out of fearing God and keeping His commandments. Anyway, this list should give you a notion of what I've been thinking about so far in 2024. Let's get started. 10. Rethinking the Synoptic Problem, David Alan Black and David R. Beck, editors9. The Bullying Breakthrough, Jonathan McKee8. Cinematic Faith, William D. Romanowski7. Winnie-the-Pooh, A.A. Milne6. If Jesus is Lord, Ronald J. Sider5. The Myth of Multitasking, Dave Crenshaw4. American Wolf, Nate Blakeslee3. The Man Who Was Thursday, G.K. Chesterton2. The Shadow in the Glass, JJA Harwood1. Our Eyes are on You, Nathan Ward Hal Hammons serves as preacher and shepherd for the Lakewoods Drive church of Christ in Georgetown, Texas. He is the host of the Citizen of Heaven podcast. You are encouraged to seek him and the Lakewoods Drive church through Facebook and other social media. Lakewoods Drive is an autonomous group of Christians dedicated to praising God, teaching the gospel to all who will hear, training Christians in righteousness, and serving our God and one another faithfully. We believe the Bible is God's word, that Jesus died on the cross for our sins, that heaven is our home, and that we have work to do here while we wait. Regular topics of discussion and conversation include: Christians, Jesus, obedience, faith, grace, baptism, New Testament, Old Testament, authority, gospel, fellowship, justice, mercy, faithfulness, forgiveness, Twenty Pages a Week, Bible reading, heaven, hell, virtues, character, denominations, submission, service, character, COVID-19, assembly, Lord's Supper, online, social media, YouTube, Facebook.
When I buy a book, I weigh three considerations: my level of interest, the cost, and the. book's length (more or less in that order). I will never read a book I don't want to read. I will rarely pay anywhere remotely close to retail (Hal Hammons, famous tightwad; you know my schtick by now) And I would rather read a short book than a long book; if you saw my To Be Read stack, you'd understand why. My “surprising books” tend to be ones where either my level of interest was pretty low and I was surprised in a good way, or ones where my level of interest was unusually high and I was surprised in a bad way. I'm pleased to say most of the surprises so far in 2024 have been good ones. Lord willing, as with the other lists I'll post this month, I'll be back in December with my lists for the year as a whole. 10. The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ, by Philip Pullman9. The Bookstore that Floated Away, by Sarah Henshaw8. The Hiding Place, by Corrie Ten Boom7. Deceived No More, by Doreen Virtue6. Helen of Troy, by Margaret George5. Sense and Sensuality, by Ravi Zacharias4. Our Town, by Thornton Wilder3. God and My Father, by Clarence Day2. A God Named Josh, by Jared Brock1. Selfies, by Craig Detweiler

This week I celebrate my 50th birthday which has me thinking about this episode of the podcast kind of like a halftime report. If I'm about halfway through my life (halfway through the game, if you will) I'm metaphorically going back to the locker room to take breath and evaluate how the first half of the game has gone. I've been on earth for five decades and today I'm thinking about my life, assessing what I've learned and loved about the first half of my life, and the recording the lessons that have meant the most to me. No matter how old you are or where you are in the course of your own life, I hope these lessons will change the way you experience your life and help you find more joy in all of it.
