On September 29, 2020, the Iskander family of six went out for an evening stroll in their Westlake Village neighborhood having no idea of the tragedy that lay ahead. On that same evening, wealthy socialite Rebecca Grossman was having drinks at a local Westlake Village restaurant with Royce Clayton and Scott Erickson, two former major league baseball players. After downing margaritas, Grossman and Erickson got into their expensive cars and headed toward Grossman's nearby condo to hang out. At some point, the two decided to race each other through the residential neighborhood. At that exact moment, Nancy Iskander and her three sons were crossing the street. Before they could respond, Rebecca Grossman and Scott Erickson came racing toward them in their vehicles fueled by bravado tequila. One of the vehicles struck two of the Iskander boys, Mark and Jacob, killing them. Three and a half agonizing years later, Rebecca Grossman went on trial for Mark and Jacob's murder. The headline-making trial resulted in a surprising verdict. We finally found a shortstop to take the stage, as Royce Clayton joins us for Episode 79! Across 17 big league seasons from 1991-2007, Clayton performed in 2,108 games and amassed 1,904 hits in the process. He was also selected to an All-Star Game in 1997 and retired as a World Series Champion for the 2007 Boston Red Sox. This week, Clayton joins host Al Malafronte to rehash some of his fond memories from his career in which he garnered a reputation as as a great teammate and one of the most reliable defensive shortstops of his generation. We discuss anything from playing under the bright lights of the postseason, his experiences with Barry Bonds as a teammate in San Francisco, and even the adversity he overcame when facing much hate in replacing baseball legend Ozzie Smith as the Cardinals' shortstop in 1996. Clayton's love of performing hasn't stop in retirement from the game, as he's even dipped his toe into the acting waters. He just so happened to make his big screen debut in the Academy Award-nominated Moneyball alongside Brad Pitt, and has some epic stories from his time on set! Andy and Mike Pusateri are back with another deep dive into a great movie. This time it's Moneyball, with Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, Phillip Seymour Hoffman and...uh, Royce Clayton? You'll find out why Art Howe was so happy with the movie (he wasn't), how different the movie almost was, interesting facts about the cast and how it very nearly had a Billy Beane sex scene. Really. Andy picks the three most "Sorkin" scenes in the movie and tells you which Cubs game the big one in this movie reminded him of. And stick around to the end when they make the dramatic announcement about the next movie to get the deep dive treatment. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/desipio/message
