Ruth Ch 4 vs 9-13 - Rev Chase Lay - Tuesday, October 21, 2025
what do we do when life falls apart? who do we become when comfort is stripped away? in a world that pulls up back into familiar patterns, God is calling us forward into faith!Ruth 1:16 - "But Ruth replied: "Don't urge me to leave you..your God will be my God."
Who would believe that a chance encounter between one of ancient Israel's most esteemed noblemen and an impoverished foreign convert would change the course of history? Welcome to Chapter Two of The Book of Ruth…
Chapter One of The Book of Ruth is a lesson in Hashem's precision Divine Direction of the world, all its creations and each of us in particular. Elimelech, the richest man in ancient Isreal, thought that he could outsmart the Almighty. He learned the hard way that his efforts were in vain. Yet, Hashem uses his free will to bring Moshiach…
Ruth chapters 3 and 4: the nighttime meeting between Boaz and Ruth and... it works! Desolation and despair is replaced with birth and gladness.Rabbi Gamliel presents on ch.4 with the beautiful insight that if Shoftim teaches us that individual acts of evil can metastasise into society wide calamities, Ruth teaches that small acts of kindness can become waves of societal regenerationA wonderful book, superlatively taught.https://www.sefaria.org/Ruth.4?lang=bi
This chapter is quite legal. Today we focus on two key words: the "name" and "geula - redemption" because here in chapter 4, "redemption" is expressed in the restoration of the "name" of the deceased, upon his "land" or ancestral portion. This concept is the backbone of the drama of restoration that reverses the tragedy of Naomi's family, and brings personal fulfillment to Ruth.
Ruth chapters 3 and 4: the nighttime meeting between Boaz and Ruth and... it works! Desolation and despair is replaced with birth and gladness. For ch.3 my fantastic colleague, Margot Botwinick, co-director of JLIC @ IDC Herzliya shares thoughts on Naomi's reversal of Bereishit in her daring suggestion that Ruth seduce Boaz.https://www.sefaria.org/Ruth.3?lang=bi
In this chapter Ruth goes out to the threshing floor at night. Boaz is apparently sleeping there all alone. And she uncovers his feet. The plan, devised by Naomi, seems to have pronounced sexual overtones. And yet it would seem that both Ruth and Boaz's high moral fibre ensure that this becomes the moments in which they reveal their intent to marry.
One megilla down, four to go! Today begins the story of Ruth, the widowed young gentile woman from Mo'av whose kindness and loyalty leads to King David and, according to Jewish tradition, to mashiach. Most of you will have already heard many ideas on Megillat Rut. In my recording today I focus on the deceptively simple question of when the story took place to understand its overall place in Tanakh and how this quiet pastoral story of kindness moves Jewish history forward. My audio is based on a longer written piece which all are welcome to read here https://joewolfson.com/2014/06/01/why-rut/Text here: https://www.sefaria.org/Ruth.1?lang=bihttps://929.org.il/lang/en/today
Rabbi Dr Sam Lebens presented ch.2s audio, focusing on Boaz's role in Ruth's conversion. Text here: https://www.sefaria.org/Ruth.2?lang=bi
What attracts Boaz' attention to Ruth? What aspect of Ruth's persona is significant to Boaz? And how does Ruth embody the character of Abraham in contrast to her ancestor, Lot?
This is a story that takes place on the backdrop of the period of the Shoftim. And yet, its message is very different to that book. What is Ruth trying to add that hasn't been said in Shoftim?

The Book of Ruth is one of the best known and best loved of all the Biblical works of the Jewish Bible. This series explores the hidden levels of depth and meaning. The last 2 chapters involve Ruth assuming two persons in one, as she suggests marriage of herself to Boaz. It seems unclear whether this is intended to be for her own good, her own actualisation and fulfilment, or whether this is her selflessly stepping aside to be a surrogate for Naomi. A deeper look at the text suggests that in Ruth's world there is no zero sum. It is possible to fully self actualise and fully be giving to another at the same time. This radical idea is understood by Boaz, and leads to the radical transformation of the town of Bethlehem, the people of ancient Israel and ultimately leads to the full unification of Israel in preparation for the birth of their great grandchild, King David. Within this story lies the Tenach (Bible)'s insight into how subtle shifts of attitude can cascade across space and time, and bring about radical change of national unity, of our relationship with Hashem, and ability to truly receive His Torah.
Ruth ch 4 by Connect Church SA
The Book of Ruth is one of the best known and best loved of all the Biblical works of the Jewish Bible. This series explores the hidden levels of depth and meaning. The second chapter introduces Boaz, a wealthy landowner in Bethlehem Judea, who later turns out to be the head of the religious court. The Rabbis identify him with the porphet Ivtzan. On the surface he is the generous caring giver, and she is the dependent poor recipient. But Ruth has entered the Jewish people in order to resolve the imbalance of power between givers and takers. Her solution is one that Boaz himself understands, and the two of them begin to create a new paradigm, beyond givers and takers. Ruth's radical idea will end up transforming the town, the Jewish people, and ultimately our relationship with one another and with Hashem. #bookofruth #torah #bible #jewishphilosophy
The Book of Ruth is one of the best known and best loved of all the Biblical works of the Jewish Bible. This series explores the hidden levels of depth and meaning. The first chapter links back to previous episodes of Torah and the Book of Judges, arching all the way back to the traumatic departure of Abraham's nephew Lot to the anti-Abraham town of Sodom. Beneath the surface lurks a deep problem and paradox at the heart of lovingkindness. A problem that threatens to undermine the entire Abrahamic project, and the possibility of a relationship with God Himself. Ruth enters to address the crisis and to resolve the pathway to a unified harmonious world. #bookofruth #torah #bible #jewishphilosophy

Luke Ch. 17:1-19 & Ruth Ch. 2:1-13
Ruth doesn't fit our mold for greatness. She's an impoverished, powerless, voiceless, immigrant widow. But, somehow this woman finds her way into the very heart of God's story. Her little story becomes part of God's epic story. Her name will forever be spoken with names like Moses and David... and Jesus. How? How do normal people Ruth (like you & me) get in on this vast, epic, beautiful story of God? Parental Guidance Suggested. This passage does include some adult themes. If your kids are listening in, you might want to skip the part where Ruth starts "uncovering feet."

Ruth's redemption is complete and her new life with Boaz provides Naomi with a grandson and a hope once again.
Ruth asks Boaz to be her redeemer and he accepts.
He is Our Covering - Ruth Ch. 3 At a time in Israel when everyone did what was right in their own eyes, Ruth showed that obedience and faithfulness to God brings provision and promotion. A kinsman redeemer was one that had the legal privilege to redeem property, people and inheritance on behalf of a close relative. If a widow was childless, under the law, a close male relative could redeem her through marriage and buy back her property. This would ensure the widow's right of inheritance would not be lost and would provide for her offspring. Jesus is our Kinsman Redeemer. He took upon Himself, our nature of flesh; His blood took away our curse, and our slavery to sin. Galatians 3:13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us.

One central theme of the Bible is the idea that Jesus redeemed us by giving Himself for us. Perhaps the greatest illustration of what Jesus did for us is the story of Ruth and Boaz. The book of Ruth has a romantic love story that explains one of the most important doctrines in the entire Bible. The book of Ruth includes kindness, love, rest, God's providence, and redemption. This first session talks about the grief and tragedy of the death of a spouse and children and one of our hosts gives a personal testimony of what happens to us when someone close to us dies. If tragedy happens, is God sill working? What does it indicate when the Jews leave a land? Can grief be overwhelming? Can good come out of tragedy?
