The NFC North promises to be one of the best divisions in football. It's loaded with intrigue. Bob McGinn, enshrined in Canton for his distinguished career covering the NFL since 1979, remains extremely plugged into the league and has plenty of analysis to share. He's still studying the tape unlike anyone in the business. Thus, the “Ty & Bob Pod” continues for another season right here at Go Long. I'm thrilled to welcome back my former Milwaukee Journal Sentinel colleague. Our focus stays on the North, but we'll also examine big-picture topics across the entire NFL. Episode 1 of the 2024 season is accessible to everyone. Audio is above and video is below.Starting next week, the show is again exclusive to paid subscribers. On this episode, McGinn begins with a full breakdown of the Green Bay Packers' Week 1 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Position-by-position, he examines what went right and what went wrong. He also explains why he believes the Green Bay Packers can win the Super Bowl and what Jordan Love trait stands out to him most. Around the 50-minute mark, we dive into those Super Bowl-contending Detroit Lions and how this team is a complete reflection of their head coach, Dan Campbell. Once again — in Detroit's overtime win over L.A. — everyone saw precisely what makes the core of these Lions different. They fight, yes. But they're also smart. At the 1-hour, 27-minute mark, McGinn dissects the Chicago Bears' bizarre opening win over Tennessee. Sam Darnold looked damn good in his Vikings debut, too. As always, we cap the show with a “McGinn Memory.” This week, my co-host looks back at the time a young Aaron Rodgers read him the riot act inside the locker room. The Book of Ruth is one of the best known and best loved of all the Biblical works of the Jewish Bible. This series explores the hidden levels of depth and meaning. The first chapter links back to previous episodes of Torah and the Book of Judges, arching all the way back to the traumatic departure of Abraham's nephew Lot to the anti-Abraham town of Sodom. Beneath the surface lurks a deep problem and paradox at the heart of lovingkindness. A problem that threatens to undermine the entire Abrahamic project, and the possibility of a relationship with God Himself. Ruth enters to address the crisis and to resolve the pathway to a unified harmonious world. #bookofruth #torah #bible #jewishphilosophy

The Forest Educator with Ricardo Sierra | A Podcast for Revolutionary Conversations about Nature-Based Education

This episode could be titled 'The Problem with Getting Comfortable with the Status Quo', because there's a very real disadvantage that happens when we slip into a routine.    Organizations do thrive on consistency, and operating within a system that has uniform inputs and outputs, and those who are in charge will resist attempts to change them, for a lot of reasons.     One is cost, because training everyone to do things differently is expensive in both time and money.    Another is working out who is trusted enough to make the decision to change, and it generally doesn't happen quickly or very often. This is where nature based programs have an advantage:   We're nimble.   We are adaptable.   We can try a lot of different things with many different types of students.     But at the same time, adversity is not easy.    It takes effort and the pressure is debilitating if we aren't ready for it.    We need that pressure, to help drive our creativity and our innovation, but harnessing that power takes leaders who can embrace adversity and use it without feeling sorry for ourselves or becoming 'victims', longing for our comfortable routines. Part rant, part inspiration, and part storytelling, this episode helps us remember that challenge, adversity and 'getting out of the box' aren't just concepts we deliver in our own programs, but also essential to our own work and life! This week is another solo episode where I take the time for a deep dive into the work of Christian philosopher and fictional author, CS Lewis. Most popular for the renowned Chronicles of Narnia, it is lesser known that Lewis was a damn good non-fiction philosophy author, and his journey tracks one of an atheist to a believing Christian through the helps of people like the very JRR Tolkien himself! This is not a "Christian show", so I must say as a disclaimer that we will be using a much more interpretive tone when approaching Lewis' philosophy, but his book The Problem of Pain is a fantastic example of why I would've bought him a drink to pick his brain, even if I didn't agree with everything he said. Here I share my favorites quotes from his work as well as my interpretations and musings. Don't forget to check out the other BHA episodes about God, Goddess and Jungian psychology for more food for thought on the subject! This is the latest update in a long string of episodic musings. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: The problem with infohazards as a concept [Linkpost], published by Noosphere89 on December 22, 2023 on LessWrong. This is going to be a linkpost from Beren on some severe problems that come with embracing infohazards as a useful concept. The main problem I see that are relevant to infohazards are that it encourages a "Great Man Theory" of progress in science, which is basically false, and this still holds despite vast disparities in ability, since no one person or small group is able to single handedly solve scientific fields/problems by themselves, and the culture of AI safety already has a bit of a problem with using the "Great Man Theory" too liberally. There are other severe problems that come with infohazards that cripple the AI safety community, but I think the encouragement of Great Man Theories of scientific progress is the most noteworthy problem to me, but that doesn't mean it has the biggest impact on AI safety, compared to the other problems. Part of Beren's post is quoted below: Infohazards assume an incorrect model of scientific progress One issue I have with the culture of AI safety and alignment in general is that it often presupposes too much of a "great man" theory of progress 1 - the idea that there will be a single 'genius' who solves 'The Problem' of alignment and that everything else has a relatively small impact. This is not how scientific fields develop in real life. While there are certainly very large individual differences in performance, and a log-normal distribution of impact, with outliers having vastly more impact than the median, nevertheless in almost all scientific fields progress is highly distributed - single individuals very rarely completely solve entire fields themselves. Solving alignment seems unlikely to be different a-priori, and appears to require a deep and broad understanding of how deep learning and neural networks function and generalize, as well as significant progress in understanding their internal representations, and learned goals. In addition, there must likely be large code infrastructures built up around monitoring and testing of powerful AI systems and an sensible system of multilateral AI regulation between countries. This is not the kind of thing that can be invented by a lone genius from scratch in a cave. This is a problem that requires a large number of very smart people building on each other's ideas and outputs over a long period of time, like any normal science or technological endeavor. This is why having widespread adoption of the ideas and problems of alignment, as well as dissemination of technical work is crucial. This is also why some of the ideas proposed to fix some of the issues caused by infohazard norms fall flat. For instance, to get feedback, it is often proposed to have a group of trusted insiders who have access to all the infohazardous information and can build on it themselves. However, not only is such a group likely to just get overloaded with adjudicating infohazard requests, but we should naturally not expect the vast majority of insights to come from a small recognizable group of people at the beginning of the field. The existing set of 'trusted alignment people' is strongly unlikely to generate all, or even a majority, of the insights required to successfully align superhuman AI systems in the real world. Even Einstein - the archetypal lone genius - who was at the time a random patent clerk in Switzerland far from the center of the action - would not have been able to make any discoveries if all theoretical physics research of the time was held to be 'infohazardous' and only circulated privately among the physics professors of a few elite universities at the time. Indeed, it is highly unlikely that in such a scenario much theoretical physics would have been done at all. Similarly,...

The Detroit Lions — the Lions! — just may become this year's Super Bowl Champions. It's time for everyone to face that reality.Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes have spent three years building a mentally- and physically-tough powerhouse of a roster. So much has gone into this, too. From the Jared Goff trade to building an ass-kicking offensive line, to resetting the secondary to — above all — seeking a specific DNA in players. (Links to stories below.) The time is now for a franchise that's toiled in the NFC basement. Detroit's 20-6 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers wasn't necessarily pretty. But, once again, the Lions proved to make the sort of hustle plays you won't see on other teams. Like, say, from Chicago Bears rookie Darnell Wright on a Vikings fumble recovery. On this episode of the “Ty & Bob Pod” with our resident Hall of Fame sports writer Bob McGinn, we analyze the Lions' win over Tampa Bay and what makes this a legitimate contender. We then try to make sense of that messy Vikings-Bears game, and think big picture on the Vikes. Where should GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and head coach Kevin O'Connell go from here? How the Vikings perform against the San Francisco 49ers this Sunday night could dictate the terms of their season. We cap with Cowboys-Chargers talk. Contrary to a media talking point this week, McGinn isn't impressed with quarterback Dak Prescott. Finally, this week's “McGinn Memory” turns the clock back to 1984, to a classic snow globe of a Packers game. In the sixth installment of our John Dewey Series, we delve into the final chapter of "The Public and Its Problems," titled 'The Problem of Method.' This episode explores the reconciliation of atomistic individualism with shared moral narratives, a key aspect of our quest for the good life. We scrutinize the challenges posed by Enlightenment thinking and its influence on our perception of society and the individual. The importance of face-to-face interactions in community building is discussed, exemplified by a case against drive-throughs to underscore the value of fostering direct dialogue. Further, we navigate the revitalization of local communal life, drawing insights from Dewey and Rorty, with a particular emphasis on the call for empathetic dialogue. As we conclude this episode, we reflect on our journey through Dewey's work, expressing hope for a society that is not only alive and flexible but also stable, responsive, and enriching.Topics: Reconciliation of Atomistic Individualism and Shared Moral Narratives Critique of Enlightenment Thinking and its Impact on Society The Role of Face-to-Face Interactions in Community Building The Case Against Drive-Throughs as a Means to Foster Direct Dialogue Revitalization of Local Communal Life The Importance of Empathetic Dialogue in Community Building The Role of Education and Community Engagement in Healthcare Reform The Concept of Intelligence in Dewey's Philosophy The Importance of Ethics in Society The Hope for a Society that is Alive, Flexible, Stable, Responsive, and Enriching.Book Recommendations: "How Private Equity Is Swallowing Up Health Care—And What to Do About It"by Dana Brown "Contingency, Irony, and Solidarity" by Richard Rorty "Sources of the Self: The Making of the Modern Identity" by Charles Taylor The Book: The Public and its Problems Twitter: https://twitter.com/Reviving_Virtue Patreon page: https://www.patreon.com/RevivingVirtue Substack: https://revivingvirtue.substack.com/ Contact: revivingvirtue@gmail.com Music by Jeffrey Anthony: https://open.spotify.com/album/1Q9wJCeuUa3wrHrKKtsTFW?si=NeyPJ-dzRBeWfHhYDPgvvw

He told FRANCE 24 that he “very much regrets” moves by the British government under outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson to unilaterally breach parts of the post-Brexit deal relating to Northern Ireland. “This protocol was mutually agreed and painstakingly negotiated over many months, and in the end ratified by both sides."

She talks about the record, Andy Gill’s death, grief and her upcoming book, 'Good Grief: Embracing Life at a Time of Death.' “The way to move through grief is not to try to expel it but to embrace it because you are embracing the person you’ve lost. And what you want to be able to do is get to a point where the dead are part of your life and that gives you pleasure and sustenance and you are able to remember them with joy instead of just flinching with pain.” Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/sound/ See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

"The Simpsons" will no longer use White actors to voice non-White characters, according to the show's producers."Moving forward, The Simpsons will no longer have white actors voice non-white characters," Fox spokesman Les Eisner said in a statement Friday.Over the three decades since the animated sitcom began, it has used White actors to play a number of non-White characters including Harry Shearer as Dr. Julius Hibbert and Hank Azaria as Apu Nahasapeemapetilon. In January, Azaria announced he would stop voicing Apu after 30 years playing the thickly accented Indian-American character. Azaria is not South Asian."All we know there is I won't be doing the voice anymore, unless there's some way to transition it or something," Azaria said, according to /Film, an industry news blog that reported it had asked the actor about the matter after a discussion panel. The decision to remove Azaria from voicing Apu was mutual, the actor said, according to /Film. "We all agreed on it," he said. "We all feel like it's the right thing and good about it."The comedian Hari Kondabolu -- whose 2017 documentary, "The Problem with Apu," thrust controversy over the character into the mainstream -- reacted on Twitter saying that he hoped "The Simpsons" kept Apu and lets "a very talented writing staff do something interesting with him.""My documentary 'The Problem with Apu' was not made to get rid of a dated cartoon character, but to discuss race, representation & my community (which I love very much)," Kondabolu wrote. "It was also about how you can love something (like the Simpsons) & still be critical about aspects of it (Apu)."In his doc, Kondabolu interviewed celebrities of South Asian descent, including Aziz Ansari and Kal Penn, to discuss how characterizations like Apu can be viewed as racism. The show responded in an April 2018 episode to the backlash over Apu, who runs the Kwik-E-Mart convenience store in TV's longest-running prime-time scripted series. In the episode, the young Lisa Simpson said, "Something that started decades ago and was applauded and inoffensive is now politically incorrect. What can you do?" Lisa then glanced at a framed photograph of Apu inscribed with the message, "Don't have a cow."Azaria later that month told the host of "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" that he'd be happy to step aside from Apu and disagreed with how the show handled the criticism."The idea that anybody -- young or old, past or present -- was bullied or teased based on the character of Apu, it just really makes me sad," said Azaria, who voices other characters on the show."It was certainly not my intention," he said. "I wanted to spread laughter and joy with this character, and the idea that it's brought pain and suffering in any way, that it was used to marginalize people, it's upsetting."Meanwhile, Mike Henry has stepped down from playing the character Cleveland on "Family Guy," the latest in a slew of White actors abdicating roles voicing animated characters of colour.Henry, who also voiced the character on the now-cancelled "The Cleveland Show," made the announcement Friday evening on Twitter, writing that it's been an honour to play the character for 20 years."I love this character, but persons of colour should play characters of colour," he said. "Therefore, I will be stepping down from the role."

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, June 17, 2018, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION The majority of conservative evangelical thinkers still believe in an orthodox hell as do most of the billion Roman Catholics in the world. This includes eternal damnation and torture in a lake of fire and brimstone. It all sounds frighteningly obscure, absurd and obscene. And for the most part, they all wish it were not true, or at least that they don't and won't go there. Some are afraid to deny the existence of hell, because that would make Jesus, whom most see as little less than a divine "fire escape" and whom they worship, unnecessary and that is anathema above all anathemas. So?.... Christian orthodoxy needs hell to be orthodox, so that means we need to reconsider orthodoxy and ortho/dogma anew. We're doing so all of the month of June here at All Souls. Lets reconsider what we believe and why we believe it and do those beliefs add to or subtract from the quality of life and consciousness! *Featuring music performed by Colin Bent, Toneille Bent, Brooklyn Benway, Benway-Caldwell Band, Majeste Pearson, Rick Fortner, David B. Yujin Nagasawa is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Birmingham, as well as President of the British Society for the Philosophy of Religion and Co-Director of the John Hick Centre for Philosophy of Religion. Obtaining his PhD from the Australian National University in 2004, Nagasawa’s work in philosophy is extensive, focusing on a range of topics from the problems surrounding consciousness to the nature and existence of God. Our focus for Episode 33, is Nagasawa’s ‘The Problem of Evil for Atheists’. The argument can be stated as follows; atheists believe that the world is generally good and they are happy and grateful to exist, i.e. they are existential optimists. However, our entire evolutionary biological system is based upon the painful, miserable suffering of the weak. So, why should we think that the world is overall good and that we should be grateful to exist, if our existence depends on a violent, cruel and unfair biological system which guarantees pain and suffering for unaccountably many sentient animals? Nagasawa argues that the theist is in a better position to answer this question than the atheist, suggesting that the problem of evil provides a good reason to abandon atheism and adopt theism. Part I. ‘The Problem of Evil for Atheists’. Part II. Further Analysis and Discussion.

Joe Brolly looks ahead to the first All Ireland football final between Kerry and Mayo. Are Mayo now back to their best or will their poor form come back to haunt them? And how can they stop Donaghy and the aerial bombardment that will rain down on their full back line? "Kerry are the safe bet because of their efficiency and ruthlessness," says Brolly. "But you know, there's something about Mayo, something buoyant about them now that they are back on track after Roscommon. I'm going to go for Mayo."

'The Problem with Infoshops and Insurrection: US Anarchism, Movement Building and the Racial Order' was written by Joel Olson. Joel Olson argues that the anarchist movement in the US has failed to recognize the central importance of white supremacy in shaping American capitalism, ignoring anarchist struggles of peoples of color in US history; it has also failed in movement building in favor of the more fragmented tactics of covert direct action and autonomous spaces. download
