Patrick Farrell, co-founder of Keystone Investing, shares how God reshaped his understanding of success, stewardship, and surrender through entrepreneurship, investing, and community. After growing up in a generous household and later chasing performance and achievement, Patrick encountered Jesus in high school and eventually rediscovered a deeper, more relational faith while working at a cybersecurity startup. That season of spiritual renewal planted the seeds for Keystone Investing, a faith-driven investing community helping investors align their capital with Kingdom values. In this conversation, Patrick explains how Keystone creates spaces where investors and founders can pursue both financial excellence and meaningful impact without sacrificing relationships or spiritual formation. He reflects on the dangers of performance-driven stewardship, the importance of wise and thoughtful risk-taking, and why generosity and investing both require surrender to God's lead. Along the way, he offers practical wisdom for discerning where God may be leading your resources and how community can help shape faithful decision-making. Listen to discover how surrendering control of your finances can open the door to deeper joy, discernment, and Kingdom impact. Major Topics Include: Surrendering control of financial stewardship Investing through relationships, not transactions Breaking performance-driven identity patterns Aligning capital with Kingdom convictions Building community around faith-driven investing Pursuing profit alongside Kingdom impact Discerning risk through intimacy with God Practicing generosity from abundance, not fear Integrating faith into business leadership Cultivating wise stewardship through spiritual formation QUOTES TO REMEMBER “The first step on the stewardship journey is recognizing that all of your capital is God's. It all belongs to Him.” “If you start there in that position of surrender, I'm so confident that God will do the rest.” “This entire process of faith-driven investing is all about growing in intimacy with the Lord.” “You can make a ton of money, you can have a ton of impact, but if you're not transformed and the people around you aren't transformed, then that falls short of what I think God's goal was.” “We want to find excellent values-aligned founders building intentional mission-driven businesses that are heading toward sustainability and profitability and growth and scale.” “Faith-driven investing can be excellent. It can be excellent for people, excellent for impact, and excellent financially.” “You don't necessarily have to sacrifice returns in order to see Kingdom impact.” “God is using investing to work on investors.” “God cares about relationships more than really anything else.” “Anything that we set up from a business perspective that deprioritizes relationship tends to fall victim to our sinful nature.” “There are few people within a founder's life that have more access to them than their investors.” “Most of the time, in my experience, God's going to push us into more and greater risk to help us rely on Him.” “The steward buried his talent because he was worried about retribution. And the Master is upset that the steward thought of Him that way.” LINKS FROM THE SHOW Keystone Investing Mark Batterson, Pastor and Author (see our past interview here) Praxis (see our interview with Cofounder Josh Kwan) Bill and Dana Wichterman, Givers and Impact Investors (see our past interview here) Faith Driven Entrepreneur Faith Driven Investor Eventide Sovereigns Capital BIBLE REFERENCES FROM THE SHOW Deuteronomy 6:12 | Only by the Grace of God then take care lest you forget the Lord, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. Buses have arrived at Durban's Sherwood Hall playground to start repatriation of thousands of displaced Malawian nationals to their country of origin. The group had sought refuge at the site after targeted threats from anti-foreigner groups forced them to flee their communities. Humanitarian groups, including Gift of the Givers, have continued to provide emergency relief while authorities co-ordinate the repatriation process. What is business actually for?In this episode of The Authority Company Podcast, Joe Pardavila sits down with entrepreneur and author Rick K. Jones to challenge the way most leaders think about profit, growth, and responsibility. After decades building successful companies, Rick now focuses on a bigger question: what does success mean if it doesn't lead to something greater?Rick introduces his concept of “The Business Tithe,” a simple but powerful idea that businesses should give back a portion of their profits to create lasting impact. The conversation explores the tension between capitalism and conscience, why many leaders optimize for profit at the expense of people, and how a shift in mindset can change everything. You'll hear why Rick believes businesses exist to “feed sheep,” how small companies can start giving back immediately, and why the future of leadership depends on moving from success to significance. This is not a theoretical conversation. It is a practical framework for building a business that supports your life, your team, and your community. If you are building a company, leading a team, or thinking about your long-term impact, this episode will challenge how you define winning.⏱️ TIMESTAMPS / CHAPTERS00:00 – Intro: Profit vs purpose00:45 – Why business exists beyond money01:50 – The problem with modern CEOs and profit-first thinking03:20 – Capitalism, fairness, and where it breaks06:20 – Why leadership is a moral decision08:00 – “Feed your sheep” philosophy explained10:00 – Success vs significance12:00 – How much money is enough?13:20 – The Business Tithe explained (10% giving model)15:50 – Why entrepreneurs struggle to value their work17:10 – Privilege, profit, and responsibility19:00 – Real-world example: Jersey Mike's giving model21:00 – How to start giving (even at $1M revenue)22:00 – Givers vs takers mindset24:20 – What “tithe” actually means27:00 – Does faith matter in business?30:00 – Final thoughts: building a legacy
Leviticus 5:1-13; Mark 12:41-44 This message discusses the importance of equal sacrifice. We all have different means, motives, and opportunities in our journey as stewards. The real question is how different people on the same journey can still be equal partners in the work of God's Kingdom. This passage shows us that, when we pour ourselves out as a team, we must take turns investing according to our means. When we do, we end up making different - but equal - sacrifices of ourselves.

The Love, Happiness and Success Podcast With Dr. Lisa Marie Bobby
Forty Colombian farmers sat looking at her, completely unimpressed, when the cartel boss in the back of the room opened a case and a drone flew up out of it. In this episode, I sit down with Attia Qureshi, the negotiation teacher who learned her craft running State Department conflict-resolution work in cartel-controlled coca regions of Colombia, and who now teaches at the University of Michigan after a stint at MIT Sloan. Her new book Never Settle, with a foreword by Sheila Heen and endorsements from Daniel Pink, Robert Cialdini, and Chris Voss, hits shelves next week. The thing I love about her work is that she does not treat negotiation as a boardroom sport. She treats it as a daily relationship skill, the kind you practice with your barista so it is already in your hands when something hard comes up at home. In This Episode The four-step sequence Attia used to reset a room of 40 unimpressed farmers and a cartel boss with a drone, and how the same four steps work in your kitchen tonight Why "take out the trash" is the position and not the actual ask, and the one-sentence reframe that changes how you fight about household chores The fifth-grade bullying story that produced the hard shell most of us are still wearing into adulthood The seven-word test that tells you whether you are influencing someone or manipulating them Why the freeze you feel when you try to speak up is physiology, not personality, and what to do about it in real time How to know when you are giving too much to a taker, and the experiment Attia recommends before you decide to cut losses The literal glass of lemonade that turned a hostile next-door neighbor into a friendly one, and the Cialdini-backed science underneath it Why This Matters This episode is for anyone who knows what they want and goes quiet when it is time to ask. For anyone stuck in a loop with a difficult coworker or in-law that has been the same loop for three years. For anyone who has tried the assertive thing once and the people-pleasing thing once and is exhausted by both, and who wants a path that does not require a personality transplant. https://teachhoops.com/ In every locker room, on every bus ride, and during every grueling defensive drill, your players fall into one of two categories: they are either Energy Givers or Energy Takers. This isn't about who scores the most points or who has the highest vertical; it's about the emotional and psychological "climate" a player creates around them. An Energy Giver is a "Force Multiplier"—someone who lifts the intensity of the gym just by stepping onto the floor. An Energy Taker is a "Vacuum"—someone who sucks the life out of a practice with a single eye-roll, a slumped shoulder, or a "me-first" attitude. As a coach, your most important cultural task is to identify these types early and ensure your Givers are the ones driving the bus. An Energy Giver is defined by "Active Enthusiasm." They are the players who "sprint to the huddle," who are the first to high-five a teammate after a missed free throw, and who "talk" on defense even when they are exhausted. They possess "Relational Awareness"—they know when a teammate is down and they instinctively move to pull them up. In the mid-season January grind, these are the players who keep your program from stagnating. They don't just follow the standard; they are the standard. They understand that energy is a choice, not a feeling, and they choose to invest it in the collective good. Energy Takers are often your most talented players, which makes them dangerous. Because they have "status," their negativity is contagious. They are defined by "Passive Resistance"—doing just enough to get by without ever fully "buying in." You'll see it in their "body language" after a turnover or hear it in the "quiet complaints" on the bench. An Energy Taker focuses on the "I" (their minutes, their shots, their fatigue) while the team is focused on the "We." If you allow an Energy Taker to dictate the mood of your practice, you are essentially letting a "leak" remain in your championship boat. You must be the "Chief Energy Officer" of your program. Use your next practice to perform an "Energy Audit." Don't look at the ball; look at the bench and the players transitioning between drills. Who is "filling the buckets" of their teammates? Who is "draining" them? Once you identify your Givers, publicly reward them. Make "Energy" a stat that you track as religiously as rebounds or assists. When your players realize that "Giving Energy" is a non-negotiable requirement for playing time, your culture will transform from a group of individuals into a high-voltage championship unit. When someone offers you a compliment or a hand with a project, do you immediately accept it, or do you find yourself deflecting, minimizing, or politely declining? For many heart-centered entrepreneurs, the idea of asking for help feels uncomfortable—or even "wrong." We pride ourselves on being givers, but in this episode, Nikki Rausch explores how that very identity might be the "roadblock" keeping your business from its next level of growth. Many entrepreneurs identify as "givers" and pride themselves on their generosity. However, there is a hidden cost to this identity. When you refuse to receive, you inadvertently create a roadblock that prevents others from experiencing the joy of giving to you. This "hard outer shell" can manifest as deflecting compliments, declining introductions, or refusing support—all of which signal to potential clients and partners that you aren't open to the very connections that drive revenue. Key Topics Covered The Mindset of Asking for Help: Why asking for help often feels awkward or wrong, and how that discomfort acts as a barrier to your professional success. Givers vs. Takers: An analytical look at these identities. Nikki explains how being a "perpetual giver" can actually become a protection mechanism that hinders vulnerability and growth. The "Compliment Test": How your reaction to a simple compliment is a direct indicator of how you show up in your business. Are you gracious, or do you minimize your own value? The High Cost of Independence: The missed introductions and slower growth cycles that stem from a "lone wolf" mentality. The $100k Connection: A real-world story of a VIP client who moved past her hesitation to ask for a connection, resulting in a national rollout and hundreds of thousands of dollars in new business. Lift as You Climb: Exploring the philosophy of Sandra Yancy (eWomen Network). To climb effectively, you must be willing to reach for the hand of the person ahead of you. Master the Art of Receiving Growth doesn't happen in a vacuum; it happens through relationships. If you find yourself stuck in a cycle of over-giving without allowing yourself to take, it's time to shift your strategy. Whether it's through scripts, mindset shifts, or business development techniques, learning to ask for help is a skill that can be mastered. Nikki invites you to join the Sales Maven Society. “Send Coach John a message”I found a fabulous post from Vala Afshar (@ValaAfshar) that reminds me to keep trying to be my best! These things that he's talking about are simple game changers for anyone who is looking to keep improving. Check this message out: “Be humble and kind. You could be wrong. Be forgiving. You also make mistakes. Be honest. Character is a door opener. Be generous. Givers sleep better at night. Be grateful. Luck seeks the thankful. Be courageous. Fight for your happiness. Be yourself, always. You will be happier.” Who doesn't want to be genuinely more happy? Happiness is fleeting most of the time. Joy is more permanent. But following these guidelines sure does help. I had a wonderful conversation with a waitress yesterday. She had just turned 30 and she has 3 kids. Her attitude around the entire restaurant was amazing!! I watched as she really took the time to talk to and listen with an older man that I could tell was a regular and how his face lit up with a huge smile for the connection she was showing to him. I made sure to thank her for being a positive example for all of us to learn from. I also mentioned that I recently turned 60 and that I remember how much better life got after 30 - she said she's seeing it already! These things that Vala is sharing - are part of not putting up with negative things… and she mentioned that is what she's doing more of. That is a powerful thing to get control over!! We ought to be motivated to give cheerfully because of the bold promises God makes to generous Christians, especially his revelation that he takes special joy in joyful generosity.

Giving to others is a great way to build a network. You might know that and act on it. The risk in being a giver is giving to the point of burn out, and you need to guard against that (as well as protect those who give to you). This episode was inspired by something relationship consultant Michael Roderick shared in his newsletter. P.J. Glasser and Kate Constable woke up with a Case of the Monday's, airing out all of their grievances from the weekend, including why we make the worst gift givers out there, why we have no idea where to watch football during the holidays, and another Ravens collapse.
