Today was a bonus episode in which we talk about non-local things, all for Fundrive*!We started off by hearing from Brandon at Unsigned BC, catch them on Tuesdays and Saturdays for more local music! They are based in Victoria and volunteer run just like us. We then talked about all the events you can attend for Black History Month, ranging from livestreams to guided tours. After we were done with BC, we jumped to Deon in France! They talked about the Cannes Film Festival which they attended and it was such a pretty segment that now I want to go to Cannes to attend the festival. Afterwards we started talking about books. Before we go to Ireland for Normal People, Serra talked about the Storygraph which is a Black-owned, indie Goodreads alternative. 10/10 recommendation if you're a book lover. Our last segment was focused on Sally Rooney's Normal People because it is a beautifully written book that everyone should read and its tv adaptation is just as good as the book!
My guest this week is Rose Garnett, the Director of BBC Film. Since joining the BBC in 2017, Rose has commissioned and Executive Produced a wide range of titles including… Joanna Hogg's THE SOUVENIR and THE SOUVENIR: PART II Eliza Hittman's NEVER RARELY SOMETIMES ALWAYS Sean Durkin's THE NEST Steve McQueen's SMALL AXE Jane Campion's THE POWER OF THE DOG Debbie Tucker Green's EAR FOR EYE ...among many others and is passionate about backing new and emerging filmmakers. Rose was also an EP on BBC Three's smash hit adaptation of Sally Rooney's NORMAL PEOPLE, produced by Element Pictures. After graduating from Cambridge University, Rose worked in theatre before freelancing as a script editor and producer. Then she joined Film4 where she would become Head of Creative. Whilst there, Rose developed and executive produced an array of recent successful UK films, including Yorgos Lanthimos's THE FAVOURITE, Martin McDonagh's THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING MISSOURI, Steve McQueen's WIDOWS, Lenny Abrahamson's ROOM, Lynne Ramsay's YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE and Andrea Arnold's AMERICAN HONEY. It was an immense pleasure to talk to Rose about a surfeit of topics, from how theatre prepared her for a career in film, what she learned working at Film4, what it means to be a director of a public funder and the considerations that come into play in making that organisation accountable, accessible, inclusive and supportive to what success look like and how she and the BBC Film team back filmmakers. Unsurprisingly, Rose had a lot of wisdom that she was generous enough to share and I know that this is an interview I will be returning to time and time again. Please note that this was recorded remotely over Zoom and there are some occasional audio glitches. This is episode 100 of Best Girl Grip.
Happy Wednesday, my dudes! We're joined this week by Shannon's friend Moni and we're talking Sally Rooney's Normal People. In this second round of restrictions, the lockdown is no longer national. But a regional approach is full of political perils (00:45). Plus, the real reason to be disappointed in Aung San Suu Kyi (12:50) and is Sally Rooney's Normal People just overrated (26:15).With The Spectator's political editor James Forsyth; Middlesbrough mayor Andrew Preston; historian Francis Pike; the Myanmar bureau chief for Reuters Poppy McPherson; journalist Emily Hill; and The Times's deputy books editor James Marriott.Presented by Cindy Yu.Produced by Cindy Yu and Max Jeffery.
Paul Mescal sat down with HFPA journalist Helen Hoehne to discuss his character Connell on Hulu's adaptation of Sally Rooney's Normal People and how he related to the role. They also dig into his relationship with his mother, doing press in the time of COVID, what initially drew him into the theater, speculation on what would happen with Marianne and Connell in a hypothetical season two, and more.
Zoe and Tom consider the mania around Rooney's 2018 best-seller and 2020 TV adaptation, tempering their slight (in Zoe's case substantial) bewilderment with plenty of analysis of what Normal People seems to be saying about sex, class, family and youth.
We meet Rose, who just like Marianne in Sally Rooney's Normal People, was in a secret relationship with someone who wouldn't acknowledge her publicly. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
