Throughout Lent, we've been releasing weekly episodes focused on spiritual practices. In the final episode of the series, this Holy Week we're considering the discipline of waiting: how we can prepare ourselves to receive good news. Our guide today is N.T. Wright, the Anglican Bishop and New Testament scholar. He describes how Jesus invited his hearers into a new way of understanding Israel's ancient story of waiting, the cosmic significance of its sudden fulfillment, and its meaning for us in this in-between time of preparation to receive good news: "The ultimate life after death is not a platonic disembodied immortality, but resurrection life in God‘s new creation. And that new world began when Jesus came out of the tomb on Easter morning. That's the good news. Something happened then as a result of which the world is a different place. And we are summoned, not just to enjoy its benefits, but to take up our own vocations as new creation people, as spirit-filled and spirit-led Jesus followers, bringing his kingdom into reality in our world."We hope that this conversation will help you as you wait and prepare to receive this good news. The podcast is drawn from an evening conversation we hosted back in 2016. Most timelines of the creative process depict it as linear and progressive, an "up and to the right" trajectory (like on a graph). But what I am finding in the final stretch of writing my novel, though, that this phase is entirely different from every part of the process that came before. Nothing about how I'm working as I struggle toward that finish line is like my ordinary creative practice, and I've had to alter both my approach and mindset. It truly is extra-ordinary (in the sense of being outside of the ordinary), and it does not fit with linear-progressive models of the creative process. In this episode I discuss different cultural conceptualizations of ordinary vs. extraordinary time, and how we can adapt these to help us understand those periods in our own creative process that seem to take us far off course even as we struggle to maintain our bearings.

Amy Goodman co-founded Democracy Now! as an alternative to what she and others perceived as an insular and ineffective mainstream press that was beholden to corporate sponsors. Goodman anchors the Democracy Now! daily one-hour broadcast and is also the program's executive producer. Under her leadership, the show became the fastest growing independent news source in the United States, boasting syndication on more than 750 radio and television stations by the first decade of the 21st century. Goodman's investigative journalism in East Timor and Nigeria earned her the 2008 Right Livelihood Award, an award often referred to as an alternative Nobel Prize, marking the first time a journalist had been so honored. In 2016 her coverage of protests against construction of a pipeline in North Dakota led to a criminal trespass charge, after state prosecutors claimed that she “was not acting as a journalist.” The trespass charge was soon dropped, but Goodman then was accused of rioting. The case was dismissed by a judge. She coauthored the best-selling books The Exception to the Rulers: Exposing Oily Politicians, War Profiteers, and the Media That Love Them (2004); Static: Government Liars, Media Cheerleaders, and the People Who Fight Back (2006); Standing Up to the Madness: Ordinary Heroes in Extraordinary Times (2008); and Democracy Now!: Twenty Years Covering the Movements Changing America (2016).

When you cross the bridge between the seen and unseen realm, you experience a life-changing moment.  Joyce Anastasia has miraculously experienced this 3 times in her life and it has forever changed her. If you've ever wondered what it is like to pass through the veil, you won't want to miss this episode. Tune in as Joyce recounts what she experienced and felt in those moments, plus Teresa and Joyce dive into the power of forgiveness, the intertwining of past lives, and what it means to bring more compassion into your life. As the author of the book, Extraordinary Leadership during Extraordinary Times, and Founder of Lead By Wisdom, Joyce specifically inspires entrepreneurs, conscious international leaders, and “ordinary” individuals to identify their greatest visions, insights, and divine gifts, to learn the most effective tools to navigate current challenges, to embrace courageous visions with their ethical implementation, and to leverage their most significant heart-based manifestation and positive impact in the world.3 key takeaways from this podcast include: Forgiveness and gratitude are two tools we can use to heal ourselves and find peace. They don't cost us anything but give us so much back. The best tools are often right in front of us, we just need to be reminded of their presence. When you have a strong reaction to someone whether it be love or hate, it may be because of an interaction that occurred in a past life. Conversely, the way someone behaves in this life may be related to how they were treated in a past life. This doesn't mean people can't change but it offers a level of compassion and understanding when examining the behavior of others. We have all done things in this life that have greatly benefited others. We have also all done things in this life that have harmed others. It is important to forgive the parts of yourself that you dislike. When you can do this, you can then begin to forgive the parts of others that you dislike. Need support for YOUR UNIQUE JOURNEY?Then check out our Spiritual Coaching Sessions. In our final podcast episode of our special Lenten series, we're considering the meaning of the good news view through the lens of scripture, with an emphasis on Christ, passion and triumph.  Reading Scripture with New EyesTo help us explore the spiritual discipline of reading scripture, we're returning to an evening conversation we hosted back in 2016 with Anglican Bishop, and New Testament scholar, N.T. Wright.Since the very earliest days of the Christian Church, the reading of scripture has been foundational for Christian formation. Rather than prescribe a particular methodology of Bible reading this week, our invitation is simply to join us in reading each of the four gospel accounts of Jesus' last days, but to do so with a refreshed understanding of what Jesus meant when he spoke of the “good news.”On Earth as it is in HeavenAs N.T. Wright makes clear, Jesus' good news wasn't about giving advice, or founding a new religion, or even where a soul goes when the body dies. Jesus was inviting his hearers into a new way of understanding Israel's ancient story and the cosmic significance of its sudden fulfillment. It's our hope that this conversation will help you read slowly, thoughtfully, and to consider and savor aspects of this good news that you may have missed before. Thank you for journeying with us through Lent, and we wish you a very happy Easter. Learn more about N.T. We continue our Lenten podcast series by considering the spiritual practice of remembering with historian and author, Margaret Bendroth.Remembering is a Scriptural ImperativeThe promise of modernity was progress, and so our default orientation is often to the present and future and away from the past, which can be seen as either irrelevant or even benighted. But it is uncanny how often the Bible instructs us to remember the great story, to meditate upon it, ponder it, write it in our heart, dwell on it, and never forget. In this conversation, Margaret Bendroth invites us to reflect on our own stories, to see our lives as the product of a long choosing linked to the generations that have come before. And then to be willing to examine our family and spiritual histories as part of knowing ourselves and our place in God's story.Righteous Remembrance Means Extending Grace to our AncestorsAnd while she acknowledges the potential for discomfort in looking back, Bendroth encourages us to a posture of “righteous remembrance,” extending the charity to our ancestors that we hope will be extended to us. In doing so, we open up the door to healing not only of our own past, but also to gain access to resources and wisdom from previous generations.May this conversation inspire you to reflect on your own history and its place within the great story.Learn more about Margareth Bendroth. Authors and books mentioned in the conversation:Miroslav Volf Related Trinity Forum Readings:Devotions by John Donne and paraphrased by Philip YanceyThe Confessions of St. Augustine by Augustine of Hippo, Introduced by James K.A. On this episode of our special Lenten podcast series we explore the spiritual practice of writing by listening to a conversation between authors, Tish Harrison Warren, Doug McKelvey and Jonathan Rogers. The Spiritual Practice of Writing As these three authors explore the craft of writing, what becomes clear is that the creativity and spiritual insight that marks their work is predicated on the discipline of showing up, to sit in the quiet with tools in hand and to attend to the wonder and mystery of their own lives. The very ordinary disciplines surrounding writing have become for these authors a liturgy by which they come into contact with the divine, writing things and expressing truths they didn't know that they knew. The Habit: Conversations with Writers about WritingThis conversation originally appeared on the Habit Podcast, a production of the Rabbit Room podcast network, and a portion of it is used here with their generous permission and goodwill. Smith. Few figures cast as long a shadow over church history as Saint Augustine of Hippo, regarded by many as second only to St. Paul in terms of his extraordinary contributions to theology and philosophy. For his part, James K.A. Smith takes a different approach, describing Augustine as an AA sponsor for the soul.Disordered Desire and the Role of RepentanceIn Augustine's book, Confessions, he offers us a searingly honest glimpse into the human heart and it's Augustine's refusal to look away from his own disordered loves, but instead to confess and repent at the level of his deepest desires, that makes Confessions one of the most enduring works of Christian spiritual writing of all time.Learn more about James K.A. Generosity with Marilyn McEntyreWe continue our Lenten podcast series this week by looking at the spiritual practice of generosity with professor, author, and poet, Marilyn McEntyre. Generosity, or to use more ancient language, charity or almsgiving, was a practice Christians historically emphasized during Lent. And while providing material support to those in need is certainly a vital part of charity and love of neighbor, in this episode, Marilyn challenges us to broaden our understanding of what generosity can mean.Caring for our Words is Part of Caring for our NeighborThe book of Proverbs teaches us that death and life are in the power of the tongue and, in this conversation, Dr. McEntyre argues that caring for language is inextricably bound up with our caring for others. It's our hope that the conversation which follows stretches your categories of generosity and caregiving this week, as we consider together what it means to attend to our language and to practice charity with our words. To listen to this or any of our episodes in full, visit ttf.org, and to join the Trinity Forum Society and help make content like this possible, visit ttf.org/join.Learn more about Dr. Marilyn McEntyre.Watch the full Online Conversation and read the transcript. Authors and books mentioned in the conversation:Caring for Words in a Culture of Lies by Marilyn McEntyreJane AustenDavid Brooks Related Trinity Forum Readings:Devotions by John Donne and paraphrased by Philip YanceyThe Confessions of St. Augustine by Augustine of Hippo, Introduced by James K.A. In this conversation, Susman gives us insight into what it has been like to work at Pfizer – a company center stage in a global pandemic developing, manufacturing and rolling out the first vaccine approved by the FDA for Emergency Use Authorization in the United States in record time, balancing speed and urgency with scientific rigor and patient safety.  Susman discusses how “breakthroughs beget breakthroughs” and how the last year has led to innovations in process (in drug development) and partnerships (with other companies and governments).  We discuss the critical importance of trust – in science and in the biopharmaceutical industry more broadly – and how historic and current investments in health equity and access, in the United States and around the world, are essential.  We also explore Pfizer's role as a global and local citizen, including the company's commitment to remain headquartered in New York City, and to rebuilding the city it has called home since its founding in 1849.  We end with a discussion of Pfizer's corporate values – courage, excellence, equity, and joy – and in particular the joy that has come from millions of people being vaccinated. Think of the courage of a housekeeper who goes into a hospital room to clean after a COVID-19 patient has been there so they can bring in another patient, the courage of a nurse who sits with a dying patient and an iPad while they say goodbye to their family, the courage of a grocery store clerk who checks out the person not wearing a mask. There are countless examples. From all his work inside hospitals, Joe could see that COVID was pushing them to the brink. Depression and anxiety were rampant. He started to think about what he could do to help, as he could see they were struggling. These are certainly extraordinary times. Nonprofit organizations are facing increased stress and pressure to deliver value across our country, while doing so with reduced staffing, risk of illness to themselves, and for many, significantly greater demand.Leading in extraordinary times requires a commitment to authenticity, transparency, and a willingness to confront and address behaviors and beliefs that might put your organization's success -- and your people's wellbeing at risk.Karen Erren is exactly that kind of leader. She and her organization, Palm Beach County Food Bank are on the forefront of the burgeoning hunger crisis in one of the country's emerging COVID-19 hotspots -- Palm Beach County, Florida. We sat down with Karen on Friday, April 5 to talk with her about what it takes to lead successfully in extraordinary times.Karen also talked with us about the importance of staying in close communication with key donors, institutional funders, and other partners during a time of crisis. As an example, Karen is sharing a video update through the ViewSpark platform on a weekly basis. We hope this helps bring you hope, clarity, and a path to leadership success in your own organization.
