“One ironic anxiety of travel is that suddenly you're living in 'organic time' and you're not used to it.” –Rolf Potts In this "vagabonding audio companion" episode of Deviate, remixed from Aaron Millar's Armchair Explorer podcast, Rolf talks about his earliest travel dreams, and what compelled him to finally take a vagabonding dream trip around North America by van in his early twenties (2:00); how travel expectations and planning are often at odds with the joy of what happens spontaneously on the road (8:30); the delightful surprises Rolf found on a recent trip to Sumatra and the Mentawai Islands (11:30); Rolf's experiences in Myanmar, and the importance of seeing time, rather than possessions, as our most important form of wealth in life (22:00); Rolf's early experiences in Southeast Asia, and his monthlong boat journey down the Mekong River (31:00); and how, at its best, travel teaches us to pay attention to life itself (35:00). Dick… Our second story was printed in the pages of Fantastic Universe Magazine five months after our previous story. The magazine had this to say about the now legendary author. “Philip Dick's characters have an exciting way of letting their logically-motivated self-interest lead them straight down the flaming road to ruin. We suspect that it is this distinctly individual approach which has made him one of the most admired and widely read science fiction writers of the past few years.”

Back from Europe, Keith offers a way to break the ice with women on a date in a way that gets them talking about things they enjoy discussing. It's a reasonable suggestion, and one that Mike unwittingly deployed recently at the grocery store as well. Keith wants to know if there's anything that an attractive woman can do without being super aggressive that would be a complete turn-off to a man during an early sexual encounter with her. Is repulsion even possible in that situation? If a man is very attracted to a woman, and that woman has a twin sister, will the man be attracted to the twin as well? And, if the man becomes less attracted to his partner for whatever reason, will he start finding the sister more and more attractive? Can this cause relationship problems? Me, I have very little experience with twins. Twinks, sure, but not twins. A woman wants to save her boyfriend's semen as a "souvenir". Another is concerned because her husband has lost sexual interest in her. And a man, in a curiously female-sounding piece of prose, describes how much he enjoys the initial penetration of PIV sex.
As Kelley Earnhardt Miller's conversation with Joe Mattes continues, she and co-host Mike Davis ask him about his time spent between Earnhardt-related companies, where he ended up working for the NASCAR.com superstore. When the time came for Dale Jr. to leave Dale Earnhardt Inc. in 2007, Kelley knew she wanted to work with Joe on setting up the branding and marketing for the new endeavor. Joe highlights how he came to work at JR Motorsports and the planning that went behind the announcement of Dale Jr.'s departure from DEI. The conversation covers what was considered one of the best-kept secrets in NASCAR history, as many merchandise vendors were involved but the news of Dale Jr.'s team switch somehow remained sealed. The 2007 announcement and merchandise campaign would go on to be one of the biggest retail successes in auto racing history, and ultimately it was carried out by a handful of people. The interview also gives insight into some of the most memorable Earnhardt-related merchandising and how it all came to be. Kelley Earnhardt Miller is back for another installment of the Business of Motorsports as she and co-host Mike Davis sit down with JR Motorsports' Senior Vice President of Business and Strategy Joe Mattes. After spending years in the banking and garment industries, Mattes was connected with Dale Earnhardt Sr. through Don Hawk. Before Joe knew it, he was moving into Dale Sr.'s lake house and taking over a racing empire. Joe fills listeners in on how he and the Earnhardt team created some of the most iconic racing souvenirs of all time, including the Winston 25th Anniversary and the 1996 Olympics diecasts. He also explained the importance of not only working with large distributors and outlets but also directly with smaller vendors and collectors. The episode explains Joe's departure from Dale Sr.'s enterprise and his early involvement with e-commerce through NASCAR.com. In part two, Joe details his journey back into the Earnhardt inner circle, this time through Dale Jr. and JR Motorsports. Donald Macleod explores Tchaikovsky's music with Sir Matthew Bourne and Dame Monica Mason Tchaikovsky is responsible for some of the world's best loved and best known ballets. His music for Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker has become so popular and ubiquitous that we're as likely to hear it in the concert hall, or accompanying a TV ad, as in the theatre. But this week, Donald Macleod is on a mission to take Tchaikovsky back to his dancing roots, in the company of two of British ballet's brightest stars. Dame Monica Mason joined the Royal Ballet as the age of sixteen, becoming the youngest dancer in the company at that time. She went on to dance many principal roles, eventually becoming Director of the Royal Ballet in 2002, before her retirement in 2012. Sir Matthew Bourne has been hailed as the most popular and successful British choreographer and dancer, with a string of awards for his many productions, not least his ground-breaking production of Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake. “Things don't happen in Las Vegas. Things are happened in Las Vegas. All actions in the town are so meticulously predicted and orchestrated that spontaneity itself exists only as the ghost of compulsion.” –Rolf Potts (in 1998) In this episode of Deviate, Rolf and Ari discuss Rolf's 1998 Las Vegas essay "The Mystical High Church of Luck," and their relationship to their early creative work (2:30); how the experience of Las Vegas depends on what stage of life you're in, how Vegas compares to New Orleans, and how Rolf and Ari have a hard time enjoying themselves when they go there (14:00); the stereotypes that surround Las Vegas, why it is difficult to write about, and how one might find original experiences there (30:00); what it would be like to live in Las Vegas, and the mysteries and mechanics of "luck" (47:00). Ari Shaffir (@AriShaffir) is a comedian, writer, podcaster, and actor. He is the host of the Skeptic Tank podcast. His latest comedy special, JEW, is available on YouTube. An unsealed search warrant states that six weeks after the Idaho student murders, officers found ID cards connected to the victims in Bryan Kohberger's possession. Reportedly the cards were found during a search of one of Bryan Kohberger's homes. but where were they exactly? Initial reports on the search warrant say the id was “inside glove , inside box' leading some to believe that the id was found inside the glovebox of Bryan Kohberger's car. Police would not confirm the report because of the gag order in the case. Dailymail.com reporter Caitlyn Becker says however based on her review of the search warrant, the ID's had been hidden away in Kohberger's parent's home. Becker report the cards were found 'inside a glove , inside a box' in the Albrightsville home, suggesting Kohberger had deliberately hidden the IDs. Police also believe they have evidence that could connect Kohlberger to what police are viewing as cyber stalking of someone from the Moscow residence.
