Today on the show we have Emmanuel Oberg. Emmanuel is a screenwriter, author and script consultant with more than twenty years of experience in the Film and TV industry. After selling his first project to Warner Bros as a co-writer, he went on to be commissioned by StudioCanal and Gold Circle before writing solo for Working Title / Universal and Film4.He has also designed an internationally acclaimed 3-day Advanced Development Workshop - based on the Story-Type Method® - which he delivers with passion to filmmakers all over the world. Emmanuel lives in the UK with his wife and their two daughters. His film agent is Rachel Holroyd at Casarotto in London. He is also the writer of Screenwriting Unchained: Reclaim Your Creative Freedom and Master Story Structure (With The Story-Type Method). In Screenwriting Unchained, Emmanuel Oberg busts many myths and sets out an innovative methodThis practical, no-nonsense guide leaves behind one-size-fits-all story theories and offers a modern approach to story structure, making it a precious resource for anyone involved creatively in the Film and TV industry (or aspiring to be): writers, directors, producers, development execs, showrunners and, more generally, storytellers keen to reach a wide audience at home and abroad.Having identified three main story-types - plot-led, character-led, theme-led - Oberg reveals in a clear, conversational style how each of these impacts on the structure of any screenplay, and how we can use a single set of tools to develop any movie, from an independent crossover to a studio blockbuster. This leads to a powerful yet flexible way to handle the script development process: the Story-Type Method®. A new framework that doesn't tell you what to write and when, but focuses instead on why some tools and principles have stood the test of time and how to use them in the 21st century.According to readers (see reviews below), Oberg's new approach is a game-changer.Here are some of the easy-to-understand concepts explored in Screenwriting Unchained that will help you improve any screenplay:How to identify the story-type of your project to make its development faster, easier and solve most story structure problems. How to leave behind the prescriptive, logistical three-act structure based on page numbers or minutes and replace it with a flexible, dramatic three-act structure that will help you design a rock-solid screenplay. How focusing on emotion, character development and managing information will allow you to go beyond the "protagonist-goal-obstacles-conflict" basic chain of drama. How to use the fractal aspect of structure to design not only the whole story but also its parts in order to avoid the dreaded "sagging middle" syndrome and breathe new life into your script. How to clarify what's at stake and increase your chances of getting the project made with a new take on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. How to use subgoals to Sequence the Action and psychological/emotional steps to Sequence the Evolution of your characters. How to keep the audience engaged using tools like dramatic irony, surprise, mystery, and suspense, adding a third dimension to your story. How to master these tools and principles in scenes through practical exercises before using them in a short film, a feature film, a TV episode or a whole series following hands-on tips and advice. How to design an attention-grabbing opening and a satisfying ending. How to deal with hybrids and exceptions, as story structure isn't about forcing all narratives into a single formulaic paradigm. The Rewrite Stuff: 12 Ways to a Stronger Screenplay, how to approach a new draft creatively and efficiently. How to make the difference between selling documents - used to raise development or production finance - and story design tools.Once you've developed a killer script, how to best pitch your project according to its story-type and get enthusiastic partners on board....and much, much more!Using many case studies including films as diverse as Gravity, Silver Linings Playbook, Crash, Billy Elliot, The Intouchables, Birdman, Alien, Groundhog Day, Misery, Edge of Tomorrow, The Secret in Their Eyes, Cloud Atlas, L.A. Confidential and The Lives of Others, Screenwriting Unchainedwill transform the way you write, read, pitch, design, assess and develop screenplays.Enjoy my conversation with Emmanuel Oberg.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/indie-film-hustle-a-filmmaking-podcast--2664729/support.

This week's guest is producer Helen Gladders. I became aware of Helen's work through the 2016 short film RHONNA & DONNA, directed by Daina O. Pusic, and then I kept seeing her name popping up everywhere and knew she was a producer to watch.  More things you might want to know about Helen:   She is a graduate of the National Film and Television School having done their MA in Producing for Film & Television. She set up her own company Gingerbread Pictures in October 2016 and was nominated for the “Best Producer” award at Underwire for her short THE WYRD written and directed by Chloë Wicks, in 2017. She is an alumni of the BFI NETWORK'S Producer weekender, Edinburgh Film Festival talent lab, and NETWORK@LFF. Her recent short films include NIGHT BUS directed by former podcast guests Jessica & Henrietta Ashworth and the Film4 & BFI Network backed RUN written & directed by former podcast guest Ruth Greenberg and starring Niamh Algar.  At the time of recording, she was in post-production on her first feature TUESDAY, written and directed by Daina O. Pusic, starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Lola Petticrew and backed by A24, BBC Films, BFI, and Cinereach. And excitingly, the film has since had two festival appearances confirmed. It will premiere at this year's Telluride festival in the US, followed shortly after by the BFI London Film Festival, where it will screen in the First Feature Competition.  Elsewhere, Helen is busy working on several projects including debut features from filmmakers Jessica & Henrietta Ashworth, Astrid Thorvaldsen, Morayo Akande and Zoe Alker. We talk about how Helen discovered a knack for producing, her experience studying at NFTS, establishing a vision and a voice for her production company, the short film funding landscape, what it means to package a project, the differences between producing shorts and features, and how Titanic kickstarted both of our fascinations with the film industry…   SHOW NOTES: Watch Helen's shorts RHONNA & DONNA, RUN and NIGHT BUS. Nick Scott is the Creative Director of Studio Hansa. The firm leverages his background as a filmmaker by specializing in creating truly moving content for brands like the BBC, Chivas, Google, and, recently, Ukraine's public broadcasting company. We discussed all of this and more this week on the On Brand podcast. About Nick Scott Founding the studio with over 20 years of experience at the highest levels of filmmaking, Nick Scott has directed numerous international TV series, multiple BAFTA, and Oscar-qualifying shorts as well as documentaries for world-leading brands. His storytelling lists award-winning and entertainment projects across household name brands such as BBC, Film4, Virgin, CBS, Tilda, Chivas, Novotel, and Google. Nick has just completed his first feature film: Me & The Sea Episode Highlights “Simple brands are the best brands,” Nick said. “Simple brands have simple stories just like the best novels and the best movies have simple loglines.” But the foundation is key. And what's at the foundation? “A good brand.” But sometimes building and rebuilding brands—even a simple brand—can be a complex process as Studio Hansa found when they were approached by Ukraine's public TV broadcaster. Rebranding by … de-branding? Yes, you read that correctly. “To rebrand the state TV in Ukraine we had to do a lot of de-branding to build trust.” What brand has made Nick smile recently? “Nike—I like so much of what they've done,” Nick noted. However, his recent smile was prompted by a moving image of LeBron James when he broke the NBA's scoring record. To learn more, check out the Studio Hansa website. Olive Nwosu is a Nigerian filmmaker, a BAFTA Pigott 2020 Scholar, an Alex Sichel Fellow at Columbia University School of the Arts, and one of four ‘African Promises' directors selected by the Institut Français. She has directed two award-winning short films: TROUBLEMAKER and EGÚNGÚN (MASQUERADE), both set in Nigeria and which have screened in numerous film festivals, including Sundance, the BFI London Film Festival, TIFF and the Aspen Shortsfest. The latter was also nominated for Best British Short Film at the BIFAs in 2021.  Earlier this year, Olive took part in an online edition of the Sundance Screenwriting Lab and she is currently developing her first feature film with Film4.  We talk about initially studying engineering and how she discovered, and decided to pursue, filmmaking, some of the difficulties Olive has experienced in sustaining a practice and what that practice looks like. We also talking quite in-depth about Olive's short film EGÚNGÚN (MASQUERADE) and how that film came to be, what she wanted to explore, how she crafted its visual language and finding the right collaborators.  I saw that film and Olive speak on a panel at Sundance London and was immediately beguiled both by her cinematic voice and by how she spoke about the film on stage and I knew straight away I would love to have her on the podcast and the conversation we had didn't disappoint. I think Olive is a really special filmmaker and I was incredibly privileged to share this space and this moment in time with her.

Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode celebrate 40 years of Film4 with a quartet of famous film-makers who have been part of its rich history and legacy. Founded in 1982, Film4 soon became an iconic and vital voice in British film. It has fostered a reputation for producing gritty, diverse stories from unheard voices as well as championing the more leftfield and experimental side of British cinema. Ellen looks at Film4's origins in conversation with Stephen Frears who directed the very first Film4 film, Walter. Walter stars Sir Ian McKellen as a young man with learning difficulties and the film documents his struggles in Margaret Thatcher's Britain. Frears continued to explore life in 80's Britain in the now iconic and still ground-breaking My Beautiful Laundrette. Stephen and Ellen discuss what the film meant at the time and why it remains relevant. Mark talks to Gurinder Chadha. In 1993 her Film4 produced debut, Bhaji on the Beach, became the first full-length feature film made by a British Asian Woman. Gurinder and Mark discuss the importance of Film4 in championing minorities and what the British film industry was like before and after Film4's emergence. Ellen chats with Ben Wheatley about Film4's response to his irreverent 2011 folk horror film Kill List as well as the multi-platform release of 2013's A Field in England. They talk about how Film4 has always made space for the more uncommercial and experimental side of British cinema. Finally, Mark talks to Clio Barnard about her 2013 Film4 debut, The Selfish Giant. A social realist adaptation of an Oscar Wilde story, Clio discusses how Film4 supported her as an artist and allowed her to share her unique and touching tale. This week's Viewing Note is courtesy of former Film4 head and veteran producer, Paul Webster. Producer: Hester Cant A Prospect Street production for BBC Radio 4

Brian and Charles is about an awkward and lonely inventor, Brian, who lives in rural Wales. He rarely makes contraptions that are useful or work right, but one day, he finally creates a robot. Charles Petrescu, built out of an old washing machine and a mannequin, becomes Brian's friend. But as Charles becomes more and more curious and self-aware, he decides he wants to explore the world on his own. Actor David Earl is a comedian and came up with the eccentric character of Brian as a bit on the stand up circuit in the UK. One day on an internet radio call in show, a friend called in to interact with David's character using computer voice simulation software. Fellow actor and comedian Chris Hayward heard it, came up with the idea of Charles as Brian's robot sidekick, and the two took it on the road as a live show. Chris built the Charles robot character as a costume, and another friend would type in what Charles would say into the voice simulator to interact with the audience. In 2017, the two teamed up with director Jim Archer to make a short film about the characters, and it did well at festivals. After that, the UK production company Film4 backed developing the script into a feature film. For the feature version of Brian and Charles, director Jim Archer decided to expand on the mockumentary style. He wanted it to look like a real documentary, with a serious dramatic and cinematic look rather than as a wink and a nod to other mockumentaries. The friends were inspired by the documentaries American Movie and Monster Road – true stories about lonely people desperate for their dream to come true. Brian and Charles premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival and is currently playing in theaters. https://www.focusfeatures.com/brian-and-charles/watch/ Jim Archer: Instagram & Twitter: @alrightjim David Earl: Instagram @davidearlhello Chris Hayward: https://www.curtisbrown.co.uk/client/chris-hayward Charles Petrescu has his own twitter account: @CharlesPetrescu Find out even more about this episode, with extensive show notes and links: http://camnoir.com//ep173/ Sponsored by Hot Rod Cameras: www.hotrodcameras.com Sponsored by Arri: https://www.arri.com/en The Cinematography Podcast website: www.camnoir.com YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/TheCinematographyPodcast Facebook: @cinepod Instagram: @thecinepod Twitter: @ShortEndz

This week's Empire Podcast sees a bright and optimistic young man who wears spectacles, lives under the stairs, and just might be the last hope for humanity... interview Daniel Radcliffe. Yes, in this episode Ben Travis, a humungous Harry Potter fan, finally comes face-to-face with The Boy Who Lived, and as well as talking about Radcliffe's new movie, adventure comedy The Lost City, his musical tastes and plans to launch a directing career, there's a little bit of Potter chat as well. Then, in the podbooth, Ben joins Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara and James Dyer for an episode in which they wax lyrical about Film4's greatest movies and general contribution to British cinema, discuss the week's movie news and find it to be wanting, throw in a boatload of obscure, unusual and arcane facts (that aren't movie-related, weirdly), and review the Harry Potter/Daniel Radcliffe-free Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore, Richard Linklater's Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Adventure, Chris Pine and Thandiwe Newton thriller All The Old Knives, and Mark Rylance in The Outfit, a film so good it almost makes Chris come to terms with the past. My guest this week is Ruth Greenberg, an award-winning screenwriter and director whose directorial debut RUN, a short film starring Niamh Algar from CENSOR, is currently showing on Short of the Week. The film was backed by Film4 and BFI NETWORK and was long listed for a BIFA in 2021.  As a screenwriter, Ruth's prehistoric horror, THE ORIGIN, is in post-production with Escape Plan Productions - the company who made SAINT MAUD and she's also working on a medieval horror with director Nora Fingscheidt (SYSTEM CRASHER, THE UNFORGIVABLE) and producer Philippa Tsang at DCM. Ruth and I had a great chat about completing a PhD in screenwriting, getting an agent and what that relationship is like, how she prepared to direct RUN and collaborated with director of photography and former podcast guest Molly Manning Walker to achieve the subjectivity and kineticism required of the story, what a writing day might look like for her, how she likes to situates herself in the setting or place of a story and how she deals with rejection.  I think there are some really vital thoughts that Ruth expresses on writing genre and writing in general, and not being hemmed in by how you ought to write.  **TW: discussions of assault** There are few housekeeping notes before we get to the interview. The first of those is that there is mild discussion of violence against women in the context of Ruth's short film Run and we mention the death of Sarah Everard, so if for whatever reason you don't feel comfortable listening to that, feel free to skip the episode or rejoin us around the 20-min mark. The other thing to say in relation to that film is that it's on Short of the Week and to coincide with that launch, Ruth its raising money via JustGiving for Woman's Trust who provide mental health and support services to women affected by domestic abuse. I've linked to that page in the show notes, so if you'd like to donate, you can do so there. And I would obviously also recommend watching Ruth's very powerful short film. This was recorded via zoom and there are occasional background noises, but otherwise I hope you enjoy this conversation. This episode 104 of Best Girl Grip.

My guest this week is Rose Garnett, the Director of BBC Film. Since joining the BBC in 2017, Rose has commissioned and Executive Produced a wide range of titles including… Joanna Hogg's THE SOUVENIR and THE SOUVENIR: PART II Eliza Hittman's NEVER RARELY SOMETIMES ALWAYS Sean Durkin's THE NEST Steve McQueen's SMALL AXE Jane Campion's THE POWER OF THE DOG Debbie Tucker Green's EAR FOR EYE ...among many others and is passionate about backing new and emerging filmmakers. Rose was also an EP on BBC Three's smash hit adaptation of Sally Rooney's NORMAL PEOPLE, produced by Element Pictures. After graduating from Cambridge University, Rose worked in theatre before freelancing as a script editor and producer. Then she joined Film4 where she would become Head of Creative. Whilst there, Rose developed and executive produced an array of recent successful UK films, including Yorgos Lanthimos's THE FAVOURITE, Martin McDonagh's THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING MISSOURI, Steve McQueen's WIDOWS, Lenny Abrahamson's ROOM, Lynne Ramsay's YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE and Andrea Arnold's AMERICAN HONEY. It was an immense pleasure to talk to Rose about a surfeit of topics, from how theatre prepared her for a career in film, what she learned working at Film4, what it means to be a director of a public funder and the considerations that come into play in making that organisation accountable, accessible, inclusive and supportive to what success look like and how she and the BBC Film team back filmmakers. Unsurprisingly, Rose had a lot of wisdom that she was generous enough to share and I know that this is an interview I will be returning to time and time again.  Please note that this was recorded remotely over Zoom and there are some occasional audio glitches.  This is episode 100 of Best Girl Grip.

In no way at all was the special guest invited, and at a later date Steve discovered that this was going to be the 75th episode. Oh no. Joining us this week is writer and critic Seb Patrick. A regular contibuter to Den of Geek and Film4.com, Seb is one half of the writing team behind the time-travel SF radio sitcom A Brief History Of Time Travel. He's also a seasoned Marvel-ite and podcaster, and he joins us to look at Fantastic Four #66, featuring the first almost-but-not-quite appearance of cosmic Marvel hero Adam Warlock. Along the way, we ask the burning question of just what would happen if KITT were a suspect in CSI, and we hit one of the all-time great number one singles. Why not check out some of Seb's writing at http://www.sebpatrick.co.uk, or follow @sebpatrick on twitter? (https://twitter.com/sebpatrick). A Brief History Of Time Travel is available from http://www.abhott.com, where the entire series is availble on a pay-what-you-want basis.
