MIT and NASA engineers demonstrate a new kind of airplane wing. Assembled from tiny identical pieces, the wing could enable lighter, more energy-efficient aircraft designs. Scientists have pondered Saturn's rings since Galileo peered at the planet through an early telescope in 1610. From the angle at which he observed it, Galileo surmised that Saturn wasn't a single star, but was actually three: a large middle star with two ear-like appendages sticking out of it, which he thought might be large moons. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/space-news/support

ARE SATURN'S RINGS DYING? Aticle Link: https://www.syfy.com/syfywire/are-saturns-rings-dying One of the most spectacular sights through a telescope's eyepiece is the planet Saturn. Its iconic rings are so obvious even in small telescopes that they cause gasps from first-time viewers. I can't even tell you how many people have asked if they're real when I show them Saturn through my own 'scope. The look of awe and joy on their faces is one of the biggest reasons I love showing off the planet. Yet that may be its ultimate fate. A new paper predictsthat in the future — perhaps as soon as 100 million years — Saturn's rings may be gone. Or, at least, severely depleted and not at all like they look today. Sending astronauts to Mars would be stupid, astronaut says Article Link: https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-46364179 In December 1968, Anders, along with crewmates Frank Borman and Jim Lovell, lifted off from Cape Canaveral in Florida atop a Saturn V, before completing 10 orbits around the Moon. The crew of Apollo 8 spent 20 hours in orbit, before returning to Earth. Anders, 85, said he's a "big supporter" of the "remarkable" unmanned programmes, "mainly because they're much cheaper". But he says the public support simply isn't there to fund vastly more expensive human missions. "What's the imperative? What's pushing us to go to Mars?" he said, adding "I don't think the public is that interested". In a statement, Nasa said it was "leading a sustainable return to the Moon, which will help prepare us to send astronauts to Mars". "That also includes commercial and international partners to expand human presence in space and bring back new knowledge and opportunities." Nasa couldn't get to the Moon today. "The space station is only there because you had a shuttle, and vice-versa. Nasa really mismanaged the manned programme since the late lunar landings." Transcript: The rings of Saturn are spectacular and highly complex. The Voyager space probes showed the existence of thousands of individual ringlets, with the widest gap being Cassini's division, which was discovered in the seventeenth century. The particle sizes within the rings range from golf ball size up to about the size of a house. Larger blocks of material are broken down by collisions. The material is mostly made of frozen ices rather than dark, rocky material, so the rings are relatively pale in color. The most spectacular thing about the rings is their aspect ratio. The rings are 270,000 kilometers from edge to edge but only 100 meters thick. They are millions of times thinner than they are wide. It's as if you had a pizza that was less than the thickness of a human hair.
