So I have to ask you, what do you think, would you ever eat bugs and/or insects? Does the idea of eating crunchy grasshoppers or other creepy crawly insects sound appealing to you? Personally I’d rather eat some nicely cooked insects seasoned with spices and sauces than organ meats from high quality animals. But with […] The post Kate’s Fear of Water Bears, Why Retiring Is Stupid, Ebola, Eating Potato Bugs, Organ Failure During Birth, Living Until 150 to 200 Years Old & Much More! appeared first on Extreme Health Radio.

Sign up for our mailing list! We also have t-shirts and mugs with our logo! Thanks to Enzo and Lux for their suggestions! Let's learn about the sun bear and the water bear this week! Sun bear just chillin: Sun bears got long tongues: The water bear, AKA tardigrade, is not actually a bear. For one thing, it has twice the number of legs as bears have: Show transcript: Welcome to Strange Animals Podcast. I'm your host, Kate Shaw. It's summer in the northern hemisphere, which means hot weather and sunshine and, if you're lucky, a trip to the lake or ocean. To celebrate summertime, let's talk about two animals suggested by Enzo and his sister Lux. They wanted to hear about the sun bear and the water bear. Get it? Sun and water? Enzo's suggestion is the sun bear, which we talked about a little bit way back in episode 76, but which is a fascinating animal that deserves a lot more attention. The sun bear lives in southeast Asia in tropical forests and is most closely related to the black bear. It has silky black fur, although some are gray or reddish, and a roughly U-shaped patch of fur on its chest that varies in color from gold to almost white to reddish-orange. Its muzzle is short and is lighter in color than the rest of its face, usually gray. It has small ears too. It's the world's smallest bear, only around three feet long from head to tail, or 150 cm, and four feet tall when standing on its hind legs, or 1.2 meters. Researchers think its chest spot acts as a threat display. When a sun bear stands on its hind legs, the chest spot is really obvious, which may warn potential predators away. Even so, tigers and leopards will attack and eat sun bears. The sun bear spends a lot of time in trees, more than any other bear. It has long claws that it uses for climbing and to tear open logs to get at insect larvae. It eats a lot of termites and especially loves honey, which it licks from the hive with its long tongue--up to 10 inches long, or 25 cm. It also eats a lot of plant material, especially fruit and acorns. It will catch and eat birds and small animals, or sometimes larger animals like deer, but it mostly eats insects and fruit. The female sun bear makes her den in a hollow tree to give birth. She has one or two cubs at a time, and like other bear cubs they're born extremely small and with their eyes and ears sealed shut. This is the case with animals like dogs and cats too, but newborn bears are tiny compared to how big the mother bear is. The eyes and ears continue developing after the cub is born, but it's a few months before it can see and hear properly. A cub remains with its mother for almost three years. Other than mothers and babies, the sun bear is solitary. Adults don't typically interact except to mate, although adult sun bears kept in captivity will play together. A 2019 study of sun bears came to a surprising conclusion that they communicate with each other by mimicking facial expressions. This is something humans do all the time, of course, and apes do too. Dogs also mimic facial expressions. Humans, apes, and dogs are all intensely social animals, so researchers have always assumed that the mimicking of facial expressions is important because of that sociability. I mean, that just makes sense. If you see a friend approaching and they have a big smile on their face, naturally you're going to smile too. But here are these solitary bears with facial communication just as well-developed as in apes. Researchers think it may be a trait that's so important to mammals as a whole that it develops even in species that don't spend a lot of time interacting. The sun bear is threatened by habitat loss and hunting, but it does well in captivity and is popular in zoos. Conservation efforts are in place to protect the sun bear in the wild as well as continue a healthy captive breeding program around the world. Lux wanted to hear about the water bear,

Cultural expectations, a rush to be ‘grown' and a lack of books that really see them—how do Latinx boys in that in-between age come to understand what it means to be ‘a man'? Middle Grade authors Kim Baker (THE WATER BEARS), Ryan Calejo (CHARLIE HERNANDEZ SERIES), Pablo Cartaya (EACH TINY SPARK), Ryan Estrada (BANNED BOOK CLUB) and Carlos Hernandez (SAL AND GABI BREAK THE UNIVERSE) discuss how books for and about the lives of boys play an integral part in challenging perceptions of masculinity and celebrating the joys of being a boy. Moderator: Kim Baker is the author of the middle grade novels The Water Bears and Pickle, a 2013 CBC Children's Choice Awards, Book of the Year finalist.

On this episode, we learn about a truly resilient animal, the tardigrade (aka the cutely-named moss piglet or water bear).  This animal can survive anywhere from the moon to a volcano to your own backyard. In its tun state, it can lie dormant for decades in a sort of zombie state. Very cool.  Thank you to Abby for supporting us on Patreon! They say that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, particularly when you’re looking for signs of extraterrestrial life. Is that a Martian bacterium you just found, or is it an Earth bug accidentally along for the ride? An Israeli spacecraft recently crashed on the Moon, unintentionally spilling a payload of adorable, microscopic extremophiles called tardigrades (aka water bears or moss piglets). Tardigrades can survive a lot of harsh environments, including the hard vacuum of space, and may now be alive on the lunar surface. In the final episode of season 2, Emily, Nick, and Matt discuss the implications of tardigrades on the Moon, and why scientists are working hard to ensure that microbes from Earth aren’t contaminating our search for life in the solar system. Kat, Leo, and Bcom return to discuss week 5 of the Winter 2019 Anime season. We kick off the podcast with some brief thoughts about the results of the Crunchyroll anime awards, which we obviously don’t agree with. Afterwards we chat about some of the nonsense we’ve been up to before jumping into Mob Psycho 100 II. Episode 5 was a showcase for some of the most spectacular animation in a TV anime in quite some time. The Run With the Wind boys take one step closer to the Hakone Ekiden, which took Kakeru turning into a glowing blue god of running to accomplish. It’s a fairly uneventful week in Kemurikusa so we breeze past that and jump into The Promised Neverland where we re-evaluate our suppositions regarding future developments of the show, and poke some fun at Norman and Ray in the process. The Golden Experience boys struggle to avoid frostbite when they face off with Ghiaccio on the road to Venezia. Leo can’t believe Giorno didn’t think of transforming them into Water Bears. But, everything up until this point was just an appetizer. The main course is Domestic Girlfriend episode 5. Bcom believes it’s possibly the greatest episode of anime yet envisioned. Mob Psycho tried, but it was like administering your medicine orally. Sure, it’ll do the trick eventually, but if you want fast-acting anime relief, you need to go to the source. Natsuo needs only support Rui by supplying supreme suppositories superbly to suppress his stepsister’s supplication. It’s a super good episode. We move onto Kaguya where Chika’s love advice involves reaffirming that they do indeed live in a society, and she will raise these boys to become respectable men. We finish off with the depressing first half of a two-part Dororo episode where Hyakkimaru finds his first love in the soothing presence of Mio, the protector of an orphanage ravaged by the ongoing wars.Recorded February 18, 2019. I chat with TJ about my experience with animal attacks. Have you been attacked by and animal? I have, if almost being chewed on by a couple of dogs is classified as animal attacks then… yes. Animal attacks happen to people all around the world and it hardly ends with a good outcome. Stay away from the any chance of animal attacks you will lose against most animals! Scientist theorize that Octopus could actual be from an alien world and were sort of seeded on our planet by an icy comet. Have you seen an alien octopus? What would you do if you did see an alien octopus? The world is full of interesting things. I doubt this theory is cool but it’s fun to chat about! Have you heard of Water Bears aka Tardigrades? They are fascinating animals with remarkable abilities. I chat about Water Bears and share a few facts about them. Why can Water Bears survive in space for 10 days? Seems odd that a species evolved in such a way. Organ printing will soon be a thing thanks to Oroganovo. This company is making huge strides in organ printing and expects to be human trial ready by 2020.
