A Note from James:This may be the smartest guy in terms of raw intelligence that I've ever had on the podcast. Sean Carroll is a great physicist and a great writer of physics. He attempts to explain quantum mechanics and the difference between quantum mechanics and classical physics. I make some analogies about how this applies to my personal life and pitch an idea that I think could win the Nobel Prize. If you listen to this podcast, you will know more about quantum mechanics than before.Sean Carroll is a professor living in Maryland, and a superb physicist who has written many books. However, there's another Sean Carroll who also lives in Maryland and is very smart. While preparing for this podcast, I didn't know the difference between the two Sean Carrolls, so I read books by both. Today, we have Sean M. Carroll, but there's also Sean B. Carroll, who wrote "A Series of Fortunate Events," about the science behind the luck of human existence. It was as fascinating as Sean M. Carroll's work. In this episode, hosts Alan Sanders and Walt Murray sit down for a chat with the host of the Von Haessler Doctrine, Eric Von Haessler. Although the goal was to start at the beginning, the discussion took on a life of it's own. Rather than the usual trip down memory lane, Alan and Walt spent time chatting with Eric about our current cultural state. It's impossible to know the fullest extent of social media and the internet, but it's hard to ignore the impact on society. From celebrities to politicians, becoming and influencer is akin to the accumulation of power. It's no longer about the will of the people or the Founding Fathers. Rather, it's about popularity and likes, follows, and retweets. This discussion eventually does turn to the creation of The Von Haessler Doctrine. Eric spends time talking about his evolution from The Regular Guys to 911 to losing his job. But, after years of struggling to stay relevent, working on a daily podcast, the opportunity arose to return to the airwaves with a brand new show. Since then, Eric has never looked back, focused squarely on the future of his show and, concurrently, on the future of our great Republic. After the interview, Eric hangs out as Alan and Walt dive into some strange news items, weighing in on them with his own brand of humor. Then, to wrap up the show, all three dive into the entertainment segment where they discuss what they've been watching, reading and listening to over the past week. WATCHING Walt has been diving into season 3 of Lost in Space. He also re-watching We Were Soldiers with Mel Gibson and the documentary The Pacific. Alan continues to give The Wheel of Time a chance, but even after five episodes, he is dubious. He loves the Disney+ series, Hawkeye, which is on episode 3. With the holidays upon us, Alan also watched Die Hard. He then revisited Enders Game, streaming in 4K. He loves watching the YouTube channels, Ashleigh Burton, Popcorn in Bed and The TRY Channel. Eric is starting on the new seasons of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and The Expanse. He also loved the new documentary, Get Back, on Disney+. READING Walt is finishing, "Killing the Mob,'" and is next set to read, "Killing LIncoln.." Alan has completed, "Dune." Eric has been into, "2666," and, "The Savage Detectives," by Roberto Belano. Eric is also deep into the science book, "The Big Picture," by Sean M. Carroll. LISTENING Walt continues to listen to the Radio Labyrinth podcast. He also just listened to the most recent episode of the WTF with Mark Maron interviewing guest, Benedict Cumberbatch. He also was on The Dirty Harry Minute discussing the film, Sudden Impact. Alan never misses new episodes of the 60MW Podcast, The Time Bandits Minute and continues to listen to a ton of Christmas music. Eric has been listening to the Beatles catalog and any shows that have to do with whether or not Shakespeare really wrote those plays. Adam Rutherford is joined by Professor of Virology at Nottingham University, Jonathan Ball, to help answer some of your questions on the latest coronavirus outbreak. Will it become endemic, and once infected and recovered how long are we resistant to the virus? And can face masks and alcohol hand gels help prevent infection? In the 1870's the scientific research ship, HMS Challenger, sailed all the world's oceans measuring sea temperatures, ocean depths and sampling the geology of the seabed. But it's the seawater samples, containing microscopic zooplankton, preserved for 130 years which intrigued climate scientist Dr. Lyndsey Fox. She has been measuring the thickness of the shells of Foraminifera - tiny single-celled organisms - as a way of measuring how much the ocean has acidified over time. The shells are made of calcium carbonate, that is much harder to accrete when the pH drops. Theoretical physicist Sean M. Carroll is very good at explaining the unexplainable. He is a theorist who thinks about the fundamental laws of nature, especially as they connect to cosmology. His research involves theoretical physics and astrophysics, especially cosmology, field theory, and gravitation. He has worked on questions involving dark matter and dark energy, modified gravity, violations of Lorentz invariance, extra dimensions, topological defects, cosmic microwave background anisotropies, causality violation, black holes, and the cosmological constant problem. Currently, most of his attention is focused on the origin of the universe and the arrow of time, including the roles of inflation, baby universes, and quantum gravity. Quantum mechanics is the most important idea in physics, and physicists themselves readily admit that they don’t understand it. But rather than treating this situation as an urgent call to action, they have traditionally pretended that the problem isn’t there. In Something Deeply Hidden, Sean Carroll argues that this situation is embarrassing and unnecessary, as we do have a very promising way of understanding quantum reality: the Many-Worlds theory, pioneered by Hugh Everett.
