...You're a WINNER! Today, Matt, Todd, and Mike dive into 1986's animated Sci-Fi action slugfest: Transformers: The Movie, directed by Nelson Shin, and featuring an all-star voice cast: Orson Welles as Unicron Leonard Nimoy as Galvatron Judd Nelson as Rodimus Prime Robert Stack as Ultra Magnus And of course... Frank Welker as Megatron & Soundwave Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime & Ironhide Written by Ron Friedman, this movie brought us many unforgettable moments. If you know & love the movie, you already know where this is going. Talk to the right person, and mentioning this movie might just bring back some deep childhood trauma. If you don't know it yet, you're about to delve into one of the most effective and disturbing 'war films' an '80s child could watch—something akin to "We Were Soldiers" but, you know, with toys, set to some of the most rocking '80s glam you'll ever hear. We're talking about a bunch of toy-heroes getting systematically slaughtered, genocided, tortured, and dipped in acid... So grab your nearest action figure and jump in for a fantastic, fun-filled ride of family adventure. Transformers: The Movie is far more 'adult' than one would ever have expected, and the impactful death of some of the biggest stars is remembered forever. Many recall tearful theaters and leaving in shock. Maybe you were never a fan, and maybe the Michael Bay movies didn't help. But this is different—more akin to "Heavy Metal" than a Saturday afternoon with some trucks and lasers. Check this classic out! America doesn't make too many animated films quite like this, so it's no surprise that the Transformers' origins lie thousands of miles away in Japan. Till all are one... and as always, thank you for listening. Matt rolls out his favorites on Letterboxd and BlueSky @MovieMattSirois. Air Cavalry in Vietnam – Jack List

Air Cavalry was a new tactic employed during the Vietnam War. Jack List participated in those early days of air assault, including seeing action in the Ia Drang Valley, made famous in the movie “We Were Soldiers”. Jack served 30 years, 11 months and 25 days in the Army, retiring at the rank of Command Sergeant Major.   Jack was born in Germany and his father served in the German Army during World War II.  During his first tour in Vietnam he was notified by his grandmother that he had been drafted into the German Army! Jack was assigned to the 11th Air Assault “Test” Division that was evaluating the Air Assault concept. Jack would eventually serve as a Crew Chief with the newly minted 1st Air Cavalry. He became responsible for a UH-1 “Huey”.  Jack flew as a door gunner on missions and then had to patch up the aircraft upon return to base. The 1st Air Cavalry was based at Camp Radcliff, An Khe'. At the time it was the largest helicopter base in the world with more than 400 helicopters. On his first mission they launched 110 helicopters to support a Special Forces camp. “The thing that scared me the most was not the enemy shooting at us, it was potential for midair collisions.” The scenes at LZ X-Ray depicted in “We Were Soldiers” were just a small part of the larger Pleiku campaign. At LZ-Albany, further north in the Ia Drang valley, our troops suffered a 50% casualty rate. Jack described one of his missions where 5 of the 10 persons on board were wounded upon approach to the landing zone. He says he has no idea how he completed two tours without being wounded himself. His pilot trained other crew members so they would know the basics in case they had to fly the helicopter. Jack says that Sergeant Major Basil Plumley was an excellent leader and always had his troops well squared away. Col. Hal Moore went back into both LZ X-Ray and LZ Albany to retrieve remains.

In the fall of 1965 the Vietnam War was an event most Americans saw as a series of smaller battles leaving little to remember. That all would change when the First Cavalry Air Mobile Division flew into the Ia Drang Valley in the central highlands of South Vietnam. The Air Mobile Division was a new concept. Battalions would use helicopters to be transferred in and out as artillery support came in from above. This allowed troops to be quickly brought in and out for battle. The central highlands had few roads and challenging terrain, making air mobility the only viable mode of transportation. The Battle of the la Drang Valley would come to be remembered as one of the most iconic battles of the Vietnam War, and later would set the scene for the film We Were Soldiers based on the novel We Were Soldiers Once……And Young. It was the first major combat action between U.S. ground forces and the North Vietnamese Army. And it all began early one fall day. Randall Wallace spent years writing the screenplays he thought Hollywood wanted, only to see them go nowhere. With his back against the wall, he decided to take one final attempt, focusing on the story he wanted to tell. That script, Braveheart, found its way into the hands of Mel Gibson—and the rest is history. From there, Randall went on to write and direct The Man in the Iron Mask, We Were Soldiers, Pearl Harbor, and Disney's Secretariat. In this conversation, Randall explains how a chance encounter in Scotland led him to the story of William Wallace, how pressure fuels creativity, and what it's like to push all your chips in. Randall is a creative and aggressive man who will inspire you to keep moving.

On November 14, 1965, the US Army had its first major battle against North Vietnamese regular troops in the Ia Drang valley near the Cambodian boarder. The first two days or the three day battle was depicted in the 2002 Mel Gibson movie We Were Soldiers. It wasn't until the movie came out that I learned that I had spent the last decade living around the corner from one of the heroes of that day. He had to wait 35 years, but eventually Pilot Ed Freeman, a veteran of three wars, was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroics that day.Today's Ghost of Arlington is Army Major Ed W. Guest: Mike Thornberry and Preston Panetti   Non-exhaustive list of great movies that men should watch…and why:   The Chosen - incredible visual display on the life of Jesus - you can watch this on their app, on other streaming services, or even in the theater (Season 3, episodes 1 and 2 were released in theaters).   The Secret Life of Walter Mitty - Ben Stiller's serious, powerful, movie that challenges you to get out of your mundane comfort zone and get out and live life! Great line in this movie is, “Beautiful things don't ask for attention.”   The Last Samurai - Tom Cruise learns about something greater than himself, a life of service to a higher calling - great line from this movie, “There's life in every breath.”   Top Gun: Maverick - Tom Cruise goes from being the young, arrogant pilot to the older, wiser instructor/teacher in the second movie - great movie for all teachers - a student won't be greater than their teacher (Matt. 10:24 or Luke 6:40).   The Ultimate Gift - Jim Stovall's incredible book put on the big screen - story of a young, prideful man who has to learn some valuable life lessons.   We Were Soldiers - adaptation from the book We Were Soldiers Once…and Young by Harold Moore. Mel Gibson stars in the movie, great lessons about leadership and sacrifice.   Here Comes the Boom - actor Kevin James is a high school science teacher who is willing to fight for something he believes in! Other movies that have a similar lesson are Gladiator and Braveheart!   The Rookie - Dennis Quaid gets a second chance to make the MLB, shows the power and influence of a father in the life and dreams of his children. Another baseball movie that has this same essence is Field of Dreams with Kevin Costner.   Remember the Titans - great movie about the influence of good leadership and how men are willing to follow a man willing to lead well.   Facing the Giants - great movie about the power of God to call men to a higher standard in life and about the significance of trusting God especially when it seems that all hope is lost! Other great Kendrick Brothers movies: Flywheel (their first one), Courageous, War Room, Fireproof, Show Me the Father…good movies!   The Lord of the Rings - epic movie series based on the books by J.R.R. Tolkien - excellent story of the battle between good and evil.   The Hobbit - another movie adaptation based on the book by J.R.R. Tolkien. Great message about the power of little things done in love for another.   The Princess Bride - this movie is apparently very different from the book (I've only seen the movie and heard the book was dark and not as good).   Les Mis - great story of redemption and the power of forgiveness.   The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse - some gold nuggets of wisdom in there! It takes true strength to ask for help.   The Incredibles - don't hide your true identity as a child of God - the world needs men and women to fight against the darkness!   Aladdin - his third wish is selfless…and you reap what you sow - great lessons.   Saving Private Ryan - incredible movie about the sacrifice made for others - is your life worth the sacrifice that was made for you?!   The Pursuit of Happyness - great story of personal sacrifice and the influence of a father in the life of his children!   The Upside - Kevin Hart's serious life movie - funny yet profound!   Last Train from Gun Hill - the importance of raising your boys well.   T4M guys - just a reminder that Training4Manhood is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) ministry and you can make donations either via Zelle (info@training4manhood.com) or by visiting the Training4Manhood website. On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are desperately trying to just make it through the damn night and get back home to our families. We're talking about the Randall Wallace film from 2002, We Were Soldiers. What a mess of a confrontation. I think it's safe to say that no one really came out ahead in the Vietnam War. I also think it's probably safe to say that no one's coming out ahead in any war.Call me a romantic idealist, I don't care. War sucks and I'd prefer it if there was never another one ever again. The grotesque loss of life isn't worth it.Need some evidence to back up my point? Give this movie a watch. Make it through to the end. Watch people get torn apart by bullets and melted by napalm. Watch all of that terrible shit. No thank you.I'll call this film effective, at the very least. By Any Means Necessary is how these men live their lives daily. The word "BRIGAND" is defined in the dictionary as a member of a gang that ambushes and robs people in forests and mountains, and it is known by many within special operations as something associated with the 75th Ranger Regiment. Brothers Dylan and Connor Curtis are former U.S. Army Rangers from 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment who founded Brigands Co. and was later joined by RJ Casey, a U.S. Army Special Forces (Green Beret), Ranger, and USAF Pararescueman. Between the three of them, they have countless combat deployments to Afghanistan, Colombia, Iraq, Pakistan, the Philippines, Somalia, and Syria. In this episode, we sit down with Dylan and RJ to not only discuss their incredible careers in the the Army and Air Force within special operations, we get into what this company does as consultants to a wide array of areas, including medical support, personal recovery, training, film and television script consultation, military advisors, stunts, writers, and rescue safety coordinators on set. RJ Casey has worked on multiple films, including the very popular Amazon Prime original, "Jack Ryan", the movie "Dunkirk", "The Dark Night Rises", "Inception", "Terminator Salvation", and "We Were Soldiers" to name a few. Brigands Co. was founded as an outlet for a continued pursuit of excellence, and a way to use their experience across a range of industries. Randall Wallace, graduate of Duke University, is an American NYT bestselling author of seven novels, as well as a screenwriter (TV and film), director, producer, songwriter, holder of a black belt in karate, and founder of Hollywood for Habitat for Humanity. He is perhaps best known for writing the historical drama Braveheart (1995), which earned him a Writers Guild of America Award for Best Original Screenplay and an Academy Award nomination in the same category, but has since directed The Man in the Iron Mask (1998), We Were Soldiers (2002), Secretariat (2010) and Heaven Is for Real (2014). Mr. Wallace also penned the lyrics to the acclaimed hymn Mansions of the Lord (music by Nick Glennie-Smith), featured in the soundtrack of When We Were Soldiers and performed as the recessional for President Ronald Reagan's funeral. Mr. Wallace and I discussed the power of art, music and story, his unlikely stint writing songs for an animal band, the profound influence of Biblical stories on his work and thought, the experience of depression, the necessity and significance of sacrifice, the general development of his career as a successful Hollywood writer and director, and his upcoming action movie about the Pope. This episode was recorded on March 9th, 2021.
