David Bell sits down with Ian Bick to break down his unconventional path through the criminal justice system — from going to law school for tax law and working at a major firm to walking away and joining the Missouri Public Defender. In this episode, David explains why he chose public defense, what it's really like defending society's “worst of the worst,” and how that experience reshaped his view of justice. He dives deep into sentencing guidelines, the use of “ghost dope” to inflate sentences, systemic changes in criminal law, and the real differences between public defenders and paid attorneys. Now in private criminal defense practice in Kansas City, David offers an honest, inside look at how cases are charged, sentenced, and defended — and what most people don't understand about how the system actually works. _____________________________________________ #ianbick #criminaldefense #federalprison #publicdefender #justicesystem #pleadeal #prisonreform #truecrime _____________________________________________ Thank you to 300 LETTERS for sponsoring this episode: Visit https://300letters.org/ to learn more or get support. What separates messages that get ignored from ideas that inspire movements? Jay Acunzo has built his career creating frameworks that stick, ideas so distinctive they become inseparable from his name. In this conversation, he reveals why most business communication fails to move people and shares the hidden structure behind narratives that transform understanding into action. If you've ever wondered why some leaders can rally teams and attract ideal clients effortlessly while others struggle to get buy-in, this episode exposes the systematic difference. The Fatal Flaw in Business Communication Most leaders are optimizing for the wrong metric entirely. Jay reveals why the conventional approach to reaching your audience actually weakens your influence—and introduces a counterintuitive principle that makes your message magnetic to the people who matter most. The question that changes everything: Are you broadcasting or building something deeper? How to Build Ideas That Become Competitive Advantages Jay pulls back the curtain on his process for developing intellectual property that competitors can't copy. This isn't about being first to market. It's about creating frameworks so aligned with your unique perspective that they become your signature—your professional lighthouse that ideal clients naturally navigate toward. What you'll discover: The iterative testing system Jay uses before an idea goes public Why the "messy middle" is where your most valuable thinking happens The difference between borrowed wisdom and ownable IP The insight: Your best ideas aren't found—they're systematically developed through a specific refinement process. The AI Trap Most Leaders Are Falling Into Here's what nobody's talking about with AI tools: They can make you faster while making you forgettable. Jay shares his selective framework for when AI enhances your thinking versus when it dilutes the very thing that makes your communication magnetic. The warning: There's a hidden cost to automation that shows up in your influence, not your efficiency metrics. The opportunity: A smarter integration approach that amplifies your voice instead of replacing it. The 6-Step Structure Behind Every Persuasive Narrative Want to know how master communicators move people from "I understand" to "I must act"? Jay breaks down the exact framework he uses to construct arguments that don't just inform—they transform. This is the systematic structure behind presentations that get standing ovations, pitches that close deals, and content that converts browsers into believers. What makes this different: Most people start their narrative in the wrong place. Jay reveals where persuasion actually begins and the specific progression that builds unstoppable momentum toward action. Fair warning: Once you see this structure, you'll recognize it everywhere—and you'll never communicate the same way again.

This episode is especially for writers, storytellers, and worldview-driven creatives working with trauma, redemption, and transformation arcs.In great storytelling, a character's problem isn't just what happened to them. It's the lie they believe because of it. And that distinction — between wound and lie — often determines whether a story actually moves forward or stays emotionally stuck. In this episode, we explore:Why wounds hurt, but lies imprisonHow false beliefs shape character behavior, identity, and plotWhy acknowledging trauma is not the same thing as redemptionWhat great stories like Good Will Hunting, Frozen, Jane Eyre, and The Lord of the Rings get right about character transformationHow confronting the lie — not just naming the wound — creates real narrative changeThis is essential viewing for:Fiction writersScreenwritersStorytellersFaith-adjacent creativesWriters working with trauma, flaws, and redemption arcsIf you want to write characters who don't just suffer — but transform — this episode will help you clarify the difference between what happened and what it meant.

How to Engineer Customers on Repeat with Joanna Wiebe

Dig to Fly

Most small business owners treat marketing like throwing spaghetti at the wall. You try Facebook ads. You update your website. You send out newsletters. Sometimes it works. Mostly it doesn't. And you have no idea why. Joanna Wiebe has a different approach: treat marketing like an engineering system, not a creative guessing game. As the founder of Copy Hackers, Joanna has spent years helping businesses build what she calls a "Copy Selling System". A repeatable assembly line that moves prospects from complete strangers to paying customers. No more random tactics. No more copying what worked for someone else's business. Just a structured, measurable process that works for YOUR customers. The Fatal Flaw in Most Marketing Here's the mistake almost every small business makes: they skip straight to talking about their product features. You've got a great service. You know all the bells and whistles. So naturally, you lead with those details, right? Wrong. Your prospects aren't ready to hear about your features yet. They don't even know they have a problem you can solve. Or if they do know they have a problem, they're still exploring different types of solutions. Joanna breaks down the journey every buyer takes through five distinct stages of awareness – and your message needs to match where they are in that journey. Jump ahead too fast, and you lose them. The Single Question That Changes Everything Want to know the secret to writing copy that actually resonates? Stop making it up and start listening. Joanna's team uses a brilliantly simple system: a one-question survey that appears on confirmation pages right after someone takes action. "What was going on in your life that brought you to [action] today?" That's it. One question. But the responses? Pure gold. People tell you their exact pain points, in their own words, at the exact moment they're most optimistic about solving their problem. This isn't feedback from angry customers on their way out. This is insight from engaged prospects who just voted with their wallet. This voice-of-customer data becomes the foundation for every piece of marketing you create. You're not guessing what matters to your audience. They're telling you directly. Make Your Solution Unforgettable Here's a five-minute exercise that could transform your positioning: Name the specific problem you solve. Not a general category, the exact issue your customers face. Name the specific mechanism in your service that solves it. What's the unique approach, process, or "secret sauce" that makes your solution work? Joanna calls these your "Unique Problem Mechanism" and "Unique Solution Mechanism." When you can articulate both clearly, you create a memorable, defensible position in the market. Think about Lucky Strike's "It's toasted" or TurboTax's "Refund Calculator." These aren't just taglines – they're named mechanisms that explain exactly how the product solves a specific problem. What's yours? Why AI Makes This Even More Critical With ChatGPT and other AI tools flooding the market with generic copy, standing out has never been more important, or more difficult. AI can write copy. But it can't interview your customers. It can't identify the specific pain points that drive your buyers. It can't build a systematic process that fits your business model. That's where you come in. The businesses that win in this new landscape won't be the ones with the fanciest AI prompts. They'll be the ones with the strongest systems, the deepest customer insights, and the clearest positioning.

BOOK A CALL WITH US NOW: https://www.controlandcompound.com/contact-us Well we've officially made it to the end of our Rockefeller Method Series! This episode closes it all out by bringing everything together into one complete system.   The Rockefeller Method isn't a product you buy or a strategy you "try." It's a long-term framework built on certainty, structure, and intentional living. In this final chapter, Darren and Christina explain why wealth doesn't fail because of markets or bad investments — it fails when families don't pass down wisdom alongside money.   You'll learn why Infinite Banking, trusts, and governance structures only work when they're supported by clear values, shared philosophy, and ongoing family leadership. This episode introduces the concept of a Family Constitution — a document that captures how a family thinks about money, responsibility, opportunity, and legacy.   Most families focus on inheritance. The wealthy focus on heritage.   This conversation breaks down how families can protect wealth for generations by teaching clarity, confidence, and purpose — not just transferring assets. If you're serious about building wealth that lasts longer than you do, this episode is essential. This week on The Econoclasts, Yanis Varoufakis and Wolfgang Munchau debunk two more establishment orthodoxies. First, Wolfgang challenges the widespread belief that the euro is a safe and permanent currency and investigates the deep structural flaws that were never fixed, exploring whether a new political shock in a major country like France could be the trigger that finally unravels the entire project. Next, Yanis shatters the foundational myth that capitalism is synonymous with free markets, exploring the cozy relationship between big business and the state, and questioning whether the 'free market' is just an ideological smokescreen. Is the system secretly designed to secure monopoly power, and will AI be a force for true competition, or will it be the ultimate weapon for existing tech giants to solidify their control forever? Every one of us was born into a kind of arranged marriage — bound by covenant to God's law. The law was good and righteous, but our sinful hearts turned that holy relationship into one of frustration, guilt, and death. In this sermon by pastor Taylor, we'll hear the apostle Paul explain why our first “marriage” to the law could never bring life, and how through Christ's death and resurrection we have been freed to belong to a far better Husband. Now, joined to Christ by faith, believers are released from condemnation and empowered by the Spirit to bear the fruit of love and obedience that the law always described but could never produce. Come discover how dying to the law and living to Christ transforms duty into delight — freeing us to serve in the newness of the Spirit.Time:EveningMinister:Rev. What if the camera caught it, but nobody was watching? In this episode of Your AI Injection, Deep Dhillon explores the hidden vulnerability in school security with Egor Olteanu, co-founder and COO of Volt AI. Despite having dozens of cameras installed, most schools have zero people actively monitoring them, meaning emergencies go unnoticed until it's too late. Egor shares powerful stories of lives saved by AI surveillance, from a student having a seizure in an empty hallway to a janitor bleeding from a head injury after hours. Together, they examine how Volt AI's system tracks threats across multiple cameras in real-time, stitching together location data and video to guide responders to moving incidents. But the conversation turns provocative as they debate ethical boundaries: Should AI detect drug use? Where does health and safety end and authoritarianism begin? Deep challenges Egor on whether founders can maintain moral clarity when profit pressures mount. How the U.S. Supreme Court Is Drastically Reshaping American Democracy

Democracy Decoded

The U.S. Supreme Court has vastly reshaped American democracy — rolling back voting rights, enabling secret money in politics and expanding presidential power. These decisions have a real impact on all Americans by making it harder for citizens to exercise their freedom to vote, easier for wealthy interests to sway elections and more difficult to hold leaders accountable. In this episode, host Simone Leeper speaks with law professor and co-host of the Strict Scrutiny Podcast Leah Litman, Campaign Legal Center Senior Vice President Bruce V. Spiva and Campaign Legal Center Campaign Finance Senior Counsel David Kolker. Together, they unpack the real-world impact of landmark Supreme Court decisions — from voting rights cases like Shelby County v. Holder and Brnovich v. DNC to campaign finance rulings like Citizens United — and explore what reforms could restore balance, accountability and trust in the Court.Timestamps:(00:05) — What do Americans really think about the Supreme Court?(02:18) — Why does the Supreme Court's power matter for democracy?(07:01) — How did Shelby County v. Holder weaken voting rights?(16:39) — What was the impact of Brnovich v. DNC?(23:39) — How has the Supreme Court reshaped campaign finance?(29:24) — Why did Citizens United open the floodgates for money in politics?(32:37) — How have super PACs changed elections?(34:02) — How have wealthy special interests reshaped U.S. elections?(35:44) — What does presidential immunity mean for accountability?(37:30) — How do lifetime seats protect the Supreme Court from accountability?(39:22) — What role can Congress play in restoring trust and democracy?Host and Guests:Simone Leeper litigates a wide range of redistricting-related cases at Campaign Legal Center, challenging gerrymanders and advocating for election systems that guarantee all voters an equal opportunity to influence our democracy. Prior to arriving at CLC, Simone was a law clerk in the office of Senator Ed Markey and at the Library of Congress, Office of General Counsel. She received her J.D. cum laude from Georgetown University Law Center in 2019 and a bachelor's degree in political science from Columbia University in 2016.Leah Litman is a professor of law at the University of Michigan and a former Supreme Court clerk. She has received the Ruth Bader Ginsburg award for her “scholarly excellence” from the American Constitution Society and published in top law reviews. Follow her on Bluesky @LeahLitman and Instagram @ProfLeahLitman.Bruce V. Spiva is Senior Vice President at Campaign Legal Center. He is an attorney and community leader who has spent his over 30-year career fighting for civil rights and civil liberties, voting rights, consumer protection, and antitrust enforcement.Over the past three decades, he has tried cases and argued appeals in courtrooms across the country, including arguing against vote suppression in the United States Supreme Court in 2021. In 2022, in his first run for public office, Bruce mounted a competitive run in the primary election for Washington, D.C. Attorney General. In addition to founding his own law firm where he practiced for eleven years, Bruce has held several leadership and management positions as a partner at two national law firms. Most recently, Bruce served as the Managing Partner of the D.C. Office and on the firm-wide Executive Committee of Perkins Coie LLP, where he also had an active election law practice. He first-chaired twelve voting rights and redistricting trials across the country, and argued numerous voting rights appeals in U.S. circuit courts and state supreme courts during his tenure at Perkins. David Kolker is Campaign Finance Senior Counsel at Campaign Legal Center. He focuses on both short- and long-term strategies to improve campaign finance laws across the country, and precedent interpreting those laws. David has spent decades litigating cases in both the public and private sectors. He worked for nearly 20 years at the Federal Election Commission, where he litigated cases on federal campaign finance law and for several years led the agency's Litigation Division. He represented the government in dozens of oral arguments, including the government's defense in SpeechNow.org v. FEC before the D.C. Circuit sitting en banc. He litigated many cases decided by the Supreme Court, including the landmark cases of McConnell v. FEC and Citizens United v. FEC. David joined CLC from the Federal Communications Commission, where he served as the deputy bureau chief, Enforcement Bureau. He previously was a partner at the law firm Spiegel and McDiarmid in Washington.
