Sermon Text: James 2 We continue in James, who reminds us that if we are to be faithful people, we must do, not just believe. The minute we ask, "How do I love God?" we are into the realm of religion. Religion based in love requires discipline and sacrifice, but it also makes space for joy. If we would love God well, let us "lift our hands, that our hearts may follow." Sermon Text: James 3; Mark 9 Our desires are central to our identity, and to our faith. Jesus calls out the apostles because they wanted greatness, instead of relationship. Jesus' brother, James, teaches us to pay attention to our desires that we might live a wise life. Synopsis: Before turning to the familiar story of Jonah, we must first orient ourselves to Jonah's place in the history of Israel and the history of redemption. Just as understanding what the Deuteronomistic history was, helped us comprehend the literary themes of Samuel, so understanding what texts of the Minor Prophets are, helps us understand the themes of Jonah. So, what is a prophet, what are the minor prophets and how does Jonah fit in their company. Sermon Text: James 5:10
"Satan trembles when he sees...the weakest Christian on his knees!" Pray without ceasing! For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. 7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. 8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.— — —Watch/Listen here using our Subsplash WebShare Playerhttps://cbcponca.subspla.sh/6jqzj8jListen here on Archive.orghttps://archive.org/download/072623-wed-facebook-stream/072623WED-FacebookStream.mp3

As it says in James 1:16, every good and perfect gift comes from God. Therefore, God wants us to call on him in prayer. We pray a prayer of thanksgiving in times of blessing, and we call out to God for help in times of trial. James 5 tells us that prayer that flows from faith is powerful and effective. Sermon Text: James 5:13-20 Preacher: Pastor Ben Sadler

Our selfish desires lead us to quarrel to get our own way. James 4 teaches us to put our faith into action by changing our hearts through submission to God's Word. When we humble ourselves in such a way, God will lift us up. Sermon Text: James 4:1-10 Preacher: Pastor Bill Limmer

Our tongue is one of the smallest parts of our bodies, and yet it can cause the most trouble. The first two chapters of James teach us about growth through trials, putting knowledge into action, and letting go of worldly biases. James 3 adds another level to understanding Christian maturity as it teaches us the importance of speaking wisely with our words. Our words ought to flow from faith. Out of the same mouth should not come praising and cursing. Sermon Text: James 3:1-12

We believe that we are saved by faith in Jesus Christ apart from works. But true faith in Jesus will lead to good works. Our faith in not just some intellectual knowledge of God but the action of living it out. James 2 teaches us that it is the work of the Holy Spirit leading us to know that we are loved so that we can love. Sermon Text: James 2:14-26 Preacher: Pastor Bill Limmer

It is common to categorize people based on their finances or influence. We might evaluate what such people can do for us. James 2 teaches us to put our faith in to action and love others without showing favoritism. All people were made by God and Jesus died for them all, therefore we ought not play favorites. Everyone experiences times of testing and suffering. The book of James opens with an unexpected theme – the idea of maturity through trials and tribulations. James tells us that challenges can be good because they result in greater maturity and a stronger faith. James will teach us of perseverance through trials. "Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me." (Psalms 50:15) Prayer is our privilege as baptized children of our Heavenly Father. 9/9/18 - Pastor Kevin Our true hope and treasure is in Christ Jesus Alone. We should not look at people based on income, status, race, sex, or ability, or politics. All humans beings have dignity worth and value. CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 10:10–13 KJV “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.” Sermon Text James 2:1-7 "My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, “You sit here in a good place,” while you say to the poor man, “You stand over there,” or, “Sit down at my feet,” have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him? But you have dishonored the poor man. Are not the rich the ones who oppress you, and the ones who drag you into court? Are they not the ones who blaspheme the honorable name by which you were called?" Leviticus 19:15 “You shall do no injustice in court. You shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great, but in righteousness shall you judge your neighbor.” Malachi 2:9 “So I make you despised and abased before all the people, inasmuch as you do not keep my ways but show partiality in your instruction.” Proverbs 22:2 “The rich and the poor meet together; the LORD is the maker of them all.” Vs. 1 - TRUE FAITH SHOWS NO PARTIALITY Vs. 2-4 - PARTIALITY LOOKS LIKE THIS Vs. 5-7 - DON’T BE A HYPOCRITE! BENEDICTION/COMMISSION Hebrews 12:1-2 “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”
