This is our continuing series pulled from archives going back to 2005. This week, we present a program from 2009 in which we summarized a conspiracy so vast it's come to be known as The Octopus. Originally released October 4, 2009 THE TITLE of tonight's show is a reference to the conspiracy investigated by journalist Danny Casolaro--whose death, despite the official ruling, remains a mystery. Casolaro believed it tied the United States government to the Inslaw case (a software company that accused the Justice Department of stealing its extremely powerful PROMIS case management software), the so-called “October Surprise” theory that Iran had held back the American hostages to help Ronald Reagan win the 1980 presidential election, the collapse of the Bank of Credit and Commerce International, and the Iran-Contra scandal. The scheme was so vast and complex that Casolaro referred to it as “the Octopus.” Casolaro was found dead in a hotel room in Martinsburg, West Virginia in August of 1991, his wrists slashed 10 to 12 times. His death was, of course, ruled a suicide. Casolaro's story might have continued its slow fade into the dusty corners of conspiracy theory folklore, except that charges were filed this week against a Miami-based missionary to Honduras named Jimmy Hughes for the 1981 slayings of Fred Alvarez and two associates in Rancho Mirage, California. It is believed that Alvarez was killed to silence him before he could carry out a threat to expose financial improprieties and other illegal activity on the Cabazon Indian reservation in Riverside County, California. Incredibly, what happened on Cabazon land in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s reaches around the world and into the highest levels of the US government -- part of Casolaro's “Octopus”. Central to the story (especially when he tells it) is the mysterious Michael Riconosciuto, now serving a 20-year sentence for production and distribution of meth. Understanding “the Octopus” is like the old story of the blind men trying to comprehend their first encounter with an elephant: the parts you touch can appear to be completely different and totally unrelated. Running over the outlines of the case in about half an hour, we didn't even mention mainstream media reports -- published prior to 9/11 -- that FBI spy Robert Hanssen sold an upgraded version of PROMIS to Russia, which in turn sold it to Osama bin Laden. It's believed Al Qaeda used the software to penetrate databases and move funds between banks without being detected by US counterterror groups. A PROMIS derivative was also allegedly used by Chinese military intelligence to steal nuclear secrets from the Los Alamos and Sandia national laboratories. So, like the Octopus, the tentacles extending from the modifications made by Michael Riconosciuto at the Cabazon reservation are many and far-reaching. Also: Ireland approves the Lisbon Treaty; President Obama strikes out in Copenhagen; the Ring of Fire heats up; the IMF becomes the world's central bank; and a scam in Montana. We are time-traveling back to 1934 to celebrate Baseball in Baltimore! Wait. Baltimore! Hometown of Spiro Agnew, Michael Phelps, and Spankrock. The place where Edgar Allen Poe disembarked a train and then died. Wait, stop — you don't get to intro with this cute cultural smattering, "next we'll visit Cleveland, Dreeeew Carey!" Cards out, I wanted to have a baseball game presented to an audience and have it be a historical setting. As if we were standing in the venue, time traveling dudes… and ladies. But I didn't want the insane challenge of a baseball radio broadcast set in a historically accurate saloon. Vintage fans carrying on in historically accurate ways would be an extreme challenge and so I chose the 1934 All Star Game (in a wealthy person bar). Time travel? Baltimore? Baseball? Did the Orioles even exist at this point?Ok so there was a minor league Orioles— oh! they had this pitcher Lefty Grove. A Marylander, (minor league) Oriole, Future Hall of Famer… Lefty was traded for an outfield fence in Martinsburg. Lefty Grove was very much a way I could have tied Baltimore to the 1934 All Star Game… if he was in that All Star game. ****. Lefty Grove was an All Star in '33, '35, '36, '37, '38, '39. I tried to find the 1933 All Star Game broadcast — a game which native son Babe Ruth clobbered a two run shot and Lefty Grove secured the save. That totally would have strengthened my case for presenting the All Star Game in Charm City...And I failed to find it in full. So… 1934! Baltimore! Look I promise I found us a neat place to listen to the game. Behold, the structurally beautiful Hotel Rennert, one of the city's early skyline darlings (now a parking lot). It was the place for area titans to smoke cigars and bro it up the super formal way dudes did back then.Digging into the hotel's history turned out to be as complicated as I should have anticipated. The Hotel Rennert's fine dining reputation rested on chefs like Henry Cummings, a formerly enslaved man who moved to Baltimore and became a fixture as chef and caterer. He was an “expert in the preparation of terrapin… and all kinds of rare games in famous old Maryland style.”I found some Hotel Rennert menus (lunch and dinner) with plans to make a lazy inflationary joke (¢15 lobster?!) until I read on the back: “…From the very inception of the hostelry in 1885 it has employed only colored chefs and colored waiters." And being way out of my depth, I wondered how to digest that. Everything has been silly and light so far. Do I ignore and move on? So Old Line Plate, a blog of Maryland culinary history, helped shed some light on why a place like Hotel Rennert might advertise its employment practices on the menu. Old Line Plate cites Afro-American's December 1915 edition: “The French chef has been tried in the south, but, except in a few rare instances, they have failed to satisfy the peculiar demands of the southern epicure or even of the tourist who, coming south, expects dishes peculiarly southern... The demand for capable colored cooks is greater than the supply." Smithsonian Magazine detailed how American recipes in the 1800s shifted from “puddings, pies, and roasted meats” to include dishes like “pepper pot, okra stew, gumbo, and jambalaya” as African foodways were woven into American cuisine. Was this about serving better food, or were there broader forces at play? This is 1934—thirteen years before Jackie Robinson. We will only hear the All Stars that were allowed to play (IE: no Willie Wells, Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson). Tom Manning, Ford Bond and Graham McNamee had the call for NBC. McName got his start in radio announcing by walking into a radio station and asking if anyone needed an opera singer.

“He's looking at me…” Released on August 22, 1989, CLIMBIN' THE WALLS, the major label debut album from Martinsburg, West Virginia thrash metal savants WRATHCHILD AMERICA, is undoubtedly one of the most uniquely profound thrash metal albums in all of heavy metal history to be crafted by one of the most extraordinarily talented (and criminally underrated) bands in the entire genre. And to think, for many metalheads back in the day, their very first experience with this album was in a LIVE concert setting, opening for Testament. Just imagine how blessed one would be to see a band as unbelievable as WRATHCHILD AMERICA (for the very first time) opening for an established act like Testament and being completely blown away after just one show, having NEVER heard the album before getting to see them LIVE! “He's making eye contact…” With a stylistic palette that blends thrash, heavy metal, and 70's classic rock, there is absolutely NO ONE else in metal who sounds ANYTHING like them. And if you're jonesing to purchase a copy of CLIMBIN' THE WALLS, not to worry, because it was recently re-released (along with their second and final album, 3-D) as part of a two-CD package with a couple of bonus tracks. “Is he still lookin' at you?” Get ready for a trip back through time to the days of yore, when thrash was still riding high and the opening band for Testament absolutely blew the minds of everyone in attendance when you JOIN US for one of the greatest and most underrated metal albums of all time with WRATHCHILD AMERICA: CLIMBIN' THE WALLS. (Also, just in case you might be wondering, there's an early (we're talking “6 years ago, during the Hodges Era” early: 02/20/2020) episode appropriately dubbed WRATHSAZ, which is a combo episode featuring both WRATHCHILD AMERICA and the darker, groovier, heavier incarnation that followed, Souls At Zero.) A Thriving Indoor Farm Operation In this episode of The Valley Today, host Janet Michael and cohost Niki Foster from the Front Royal/Warren County Chamber of Commerce talk with chamber member & community advocate Rob Demariano about his growing business Robby Ds Lil Greens, an indoor vertical microgreen farm that has been quietly revolutionizing local food access in Front Royal, Virginia for nearly three years. Operating as a one-man enterprise, Rob has managed to expand his delivery footprint from Front Royal to encompass the region between Martinsburg and Luray, reaching as far east as The Plains. Remarkably, he's even scheduling meetings with Northern Virginia restaurants to further extend his reach. Unlike traditional outdoor farming, Rob's indoor operation allows him to control every environmental variable year-round. "I can dial in weather, humidity, everything," he explains, noting that while he admittedly has "a bit of a brown thumb" when it comes to outdoor gardening, the controlled indoor environment lets him perfect his growing methods and lock them in consistently. Understanding the Microgreen Advantage For those unfamiliar with microgreens, Rob offers a clear distinction from their better-known cousin, the sprout. While sprouts consist simply of seeds with small stems emerging—think mung beans—microgreens advance to the leafing stage, similar to seedlings. This developmental sweet spot delivers maximum flavor intensity and nutritional density. "The sweets are sweeter. The radishes have more bite," Rob notes, adding that microgreens are legitimately certified superfoods with significantly higher nutrition levels than their full-grown counterparts. Innovative Product Development Beyond fresh microgreens, Rob has channeled his inner "mad scientist" to create an impressive array of value-added products. His freeze-dried broccoli microgreen mango drink cleverly disguises the superfood within a bright yellow beverage that looks and tastes like ordinary mango juice. After depleting his first production run from fall through early March, he's preparing another batch for late March. Meanwhile, his collaboration with Wuuds Coffee—a Smithsonian-recommended, bird-friendly coffee roaster—and Hawksbill Mountain Mushroom has yielded a microgreen and mushroom coffee blend. The pre-ground mixture requires no additional preparation, brewing just like regular coffee without any grittiness. Customers can purchase it locally or order online with free Friday delivery throughout the Winchester and Front Royal areas. Rob's partnerships extend into the dessert realm as well. Working with Uncle Beehive in Winchester, he developed a Genovese basil ice cream using their lemon cream base. After a successful soft launch late last year, he's now dedicating two full growing racks exclusively to basil production to meet demand. The ice cream will soon appear permanently on the menu at an unnamed Winchester restaurant. Most recently, Rob partnered with Bethlehem Farms to create microgreen-topped wood-fired personal pan pizzas. Priced at just $14, these pizzas feature top-quality ingredients and sold out almost immediately upon their launch last week. The Farm to Fam Initiative However, Rob's most ambitious project represents the culmination of his original business vision. Launching March 28th, the "Farm to Fam" program partners with the Hike Kidz Foundation, a local 501(c)(3) organization, to address food insecurity while supporting small-scale farmers. "I have so many partners that I've gotten through the years," Rob explains. "I said, why aren't we putting together a CSA-style box utilizing all local farmers and producers and look to those in our community who are suffering from food insecurity?" The program will initially deliver 50 boxes to 50 Warren County families experiencing food insecurity, providing them with premium local products including fresh superfoods, milk, eggs, and meats. Funded through a recently approved grant and private donations, the initiative aims to grow from monthly or biweekly deliveries to weekly distribution. Importantly, the program serves a dual purpose. By paying small-scale farms for their products through grant funding, Farm to Fam creates stable income streams that help these operations grow. Rob envisions families eventually participating through volunteering with box packing and even farming activities, creating a sustainable ecosystem that benefits both food-insecure families and local agricultural businesses. A Community Leader Rob's commitment extends beyond his business ventures. He serves on multiple boards including the Front Royal Warren County Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Front Royal, Hike Kidz Foundation, and Front Royal Soccer Association. Niki emphasizes his community involvement: "He is one of those people who you heard him talk about all the business stuff that he is doing. He also gives of his time for organizations and the folks in the community as well." Connecting with the Community Customers can order from Robby Ds Lil Greens through robbydslilgreens.com, with free Friday deliveries for local orders. The business also maintains active Facebook and Instagram presences. For those interested in volunteering with the Farm to Fam project, information is available through the Hike Kidz Foundation website at hikekidzfoundation.org. As Rob continues experimenting with new products and expanding his community impact, his story illustrates how innovative agriculture can address both nutritional needs and food system sustainability simultaneously. With each new partnership and product launch, this one-man operation proves that thinking creatively about local food systems can yield benefits far beyond the farm itself.

That same lens frames our shoutout to Steven Daly, leading the nation in tackles for loss and earning Big Ten praise. He's proof that local work can reach national stages, and a reminder to support athletes before the headlines, not after. Then we face a tougher headline. Two National Guard members were ambushed near the White House—one with local ties—and our town barely blinked. We challenge the silence and ask what it says about our priorities. From there, we unpack digital ID concerns, privacy stakes, and how easy convenience can compromise agency. We don't tell you what to think; we ask you to think for yourself. To close, we kick around Giannis trade rumors, what a true superstar means to the Knicks or Lakers, and how playoff math shapes the Cowboys, Eagles, Indiana, JMU, and Virginia. The throughline never changes: preparation, culture, and courage—on the field and off—decide who we are. If you're here for real talk about the teams you love and the people who make this community, you're in the right place. If this hit you—share it, subscribe on YouTube, and drop a comment with your state picks or your take on the Guard story. This week, we're a day late and a few dollars short. The Creeps stay festive and hold a Victorian style feast on a millennial's budget. We try a classic tiny pecan pie from Walmart, interestingly decent Crisp Apple Jason Universe themed Angry Orchard cider, and just the weirdest stuff we could find at Aldi: iced soft gingerbread things and Spritz orange wine that finally opens around the ten minute mark. We think it's wine, we're not sure. Also, Kelsey talks about her solo trip to Martinsburg, WV. She visited Sumo Fusion, located at 1331 Edwin Miller Blvd. Their open daily - Mon-Thu 11-9:30, Fri-Sat 11-10, and Sun Noon-9:30. She tried incredible appetizers and enjoyed shrimp dumplings to her surprise.Matt's favorite special is back! This year's Christmas ghost story will be read by Kelsey. We've chosen The Phantom Toe by two initials or whatever. (Author unknown) The Creeps also talk about how bad that pumpkin ramen was, beloved Appalachian folktales, making punch, powdered sugar giving the Christmas spirit, the horror of getting buzzbombed off a buzzball, and the horror of beloved but now defunct restaurants.
On this week's episode of Inside West Virginia Politics, our guests join Rick Johnson to discuss foster care issues, Martinsburg's growth, holiday travel and state of West Virginia infrastructure.

Are the Claims of Racism True, or a Distraction? Special Episode. From Chicago to West Virginia, a Law Enforcement Perspective. Few accusations are repeated as often, or with as much certainty, as the claim that American policing and the criminal justice system are inherently racist. It's a powerful narrative, amplified daily across social media, headlines, and political talking points. But is it true? Or has it become a dangerous distraction from facts, context, and real solutions? Look for The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast on social media like their Facebook , Instagram , LinkedIn , Medium and other social media platforms. That question is at the center of a special episode of the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast, available on their website, also on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Youtube and many major streaming platforms, and discussed across Facebook, Instagram, and the news. The episode features Maurice “Maury” Richards, a former Police Chief in Martinsburg, West Virginia, and a retired Chicago Police Lieutenant with decades of frontline experience. Experience From Two Very Different Cities Richards' career spans two vastly different policing environments, urban Chicago and small-city West Virginia. His perspective is not theoretical or academic; it's built on years of responding to violent crime, managing officers, and confronting the realities that don't always make headlines. Supporting articles about this and much more from Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in platforms like Medium , Blogspot and Linkedin . During the conversation, Richards challenges the popular claim that police shootings in America are driven by racial bias. Instead, he argues that crime patterns, suspect behavior, and officer encounters with violence, not race, largely explain police use-of-force outcomes. Are the Claims of Racism True, or a Distraction? Special Episode. What the Data Shows National data consistently reveals that police shootings closely track rates of violent crime and armed encounters, not racial animus. In 2019, police officers fatally shot just over 1,000 individuals nationwide. The majority were armed or posed an immediate threat. While African Americans represented roughly a quarter of those killed, that proportion has remained stable for years and is lower than what crime and suspect data would predict, given the frequency with which officers encounter armed violent offenders. That context is often missing from public debate. Available for free on their website and streaming on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Youtube and other podcast platforms. Equally overlooked: in 2019, police fatally shot more unarmed white suspects than unarmed Black suspects, and those numbers have declined significantly since 2015. When placed alongside broader homicide data, unarmed Black suspects killed by police represent a tiny fraction of overall violent deaths involving African Americans. What Research Actually Concludes Multiple large-scale studies, spanning economics, criminology, and peer-reviewed science, have examined police use of force. Their findings repeatedly undermine the claim of systemic racial bias in police shootings. Are the Claims of Racism True, or a Distraction? Special Episode. The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast episode is available for free on their website , Apple Podcasts , Spotify and most major podcast platforms. Researchers have found that: The likelihood of a fatal police encounter increases with exposure to violent suspects, regardless of race. There is no statistically significant evidence of anti-Black bias in fatal police shootings when crime rates and behavior during encounters are considered. White officers, in some departments, have been found less likely than minority officers to shoot unarmed Black suspects. These conclusions don't deny that misconduct occurs or that bad officers exist. Rather, they challenge the idea that racism is baked into the system itself. The Cost of a False Narrative Richards and the show's hosts argue that the real danger lies in what happens when an unproven narrative is treated as fact. The portrayal of policing as systemically racist has had consequences, some deadly. In past years, false assumptions fueled targeted attacks on officers and led to pullbacks in proactive policing, especially in high-crime neighborhoods. When officers disengage, it is often law-abiding residents in minority communities who pay the price through increased violence, drug activity, and gang control. Are the Claims of Racism True, or a Distraction? Special Episode. Check out The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast website, on Apple podcasts, Spotify, Youtube and on LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, and across most podcast platforms where listeners will find authentic law enforcement stories. As Richards explains, fewer arrests and less enforcement don't eliminate crime, they simply shift power to those who exploit the absence of law and order. Politics, Policy, and the Bigger Picture Claims of systemic racism have become foundational to movements such as “Defund the Police,” opposition to Broken Windows policing, and calls to dismantle traditional drug enforcement. Even national leaders have echoed these allegations, often without defining what “systemic racism” actually means. When examined closely, the arguments fall apart: Claims of widespread racial animus ignore how aggressively modern institutions punish and correct discriminatory behavior. Assertions that past racism explains all present disparities assume causal links unsupported by evidence. Psychological theories of subconscious bias have been widely challenged and debunked. Disparity-based arguments focus solely on offenders while ignoring victims, who are disproportionately minority themselves. Perhaps most troubling, many proposed “solutions” would harm the very communities they claim to protect by reducing safety, enforcement, and accountability. The Bottom Line The conversation reaches a clear conclusion: the claim of systemic racism in American policing and the criminal justice system does not stand up to scrutiny. That doesn't mean reform isn't needed or that every police action is justified, but it does mean debates should be grounded in facts, not fear or political convenience. When Mallory Peterson discovered she had Scottish ancestry instead of Cherokee heritage, she uncovered something intriguing that has captured her imagination. In the little town of Martinsburg, West Virginia she found a spy. And not just any spy but 17 year old Belle Boyd, the infamous Confederate spy known as "Cleopatra of the Secession."In this episode, I sit down with Mallory, a young genealogist whose complicated family story—raised by grandparents, not meeting her biological father until 14—fueled her passion for discovering the ancestors she never knew. Her journey into her family tree uncovered the migration patterns of her Scottish forebears, those rebellious, storytelling souls who settled in the Appalachian Mountains and brought their fierce independence with them.Together, we explore how Belle Boyd's story reveals the Scottish tendency toward stubborn conviction, the complicated legacy of being on the wrong side of history, and why some ancestors capture our imagination despite their flaws. From Civil War espionage to stage performances reliving her "glory days," Belle's life demonstrates that family history isn't always comfortable but it's always worth discovering. What stories of courage, rebellion, or notoriety might be hiding in your family tree?〰️

In the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, a beacon of hope and health shines for thousands of residents—regardless of their income, insurance status, or background. Shenandoah Community Health, a federally qualified health center with locations in Martinsburg and Winchester, is redefining what it means to provide accessible, compassionate care to the community. During a recent conversation on "The Valley Today," host Janet Michael sat down with Bradley Kirkland, the center's marketing manager, to discuss the vital role community health centers play in the region. As National Health Center Week approaches, Kirkland shared insights into the center's origins, its comprehensive range of services, and the unique challenges faced by the populations it serves. Founded as a migrant healthcare center during Lyndon Johnson's War on Poverty, Shenandoah Community Health has grown to offer a full spectrum of primary care for adults and children, women's health, behavioral health, and even in-house pharmacies with discounted medications. “We're a patient-centered medical home,” Kirkland explained, “which means we can take care of all your primary care needs in one place.” The center's sliding fee scale ensures that no one is turned away, and those without insurance or with high deductibles can still access quality care without the fear of crippling medical debt. But the center's impact goes beyond medical services. With a focus on case management, Shenandoah Community Health helps patients navigate follow-up appointments, specialist referrals, and the often-overwhelming healthcare system. “It's a team effort,” Kirkland emphasized, “to look after their health and see their whole journey.” Community partnerships are at the heart of the center's mission. Collaborations with local nonprofits, churches, and healthcare organizations amplify their reach and effectiveness, especially during events like National Health Center Week. This year's celebration includes staff appreciation cookouts, patient appreciation days with goodie bags and educational materials, and special displays highlighting the struggles of the homeless and underserved. The week culminates in partner appreciation, recognizing the unsung heroes who support the center's work. For many in the Valley, Shenandoah Community Health is more than a clinic—it's a lifeline. As Kirkland put it, “We're here for our community, and we want everyone to know they're welcome.” Whether you're a busy parent, a farmworker, or someone struggling to make ends meet, the doors at Shenandoah Community Health are always open, offering not just healthcare, but hope and dignity for all. For more information, visit Shenandoah Community Health on Facebook or at shencommhealth.com.

We're experimenting and would love to hear from you!In this episode of 'Discover Daily', the IRS is making waves in government tech adoption with its upcoming acquisition of an Nvidia SuperPod AI supercomputer. This sophisticated system, featuring thirty-one servers with Blackwell processors, will be installed at their Martinsburg, West Virginia computing center. The system aims to revolutionize the agency's machine learning capabilities, particularly in fraud detection and taxpayer behavior analysis, marking a significant step forward in AI integration within government operations. In a recent study on AI energy consumption, ChatGPT's latest model GPT-4 has been found to use significantly less power than previously thought. Research by Epoch AI reveals that each query consumes approximately 0.3 watt-hours, ten times lower than earlier estimates. This efficiency improvement is attributed to advanced hardware implementation, system optimization, and more accurate calculation methods, though the cumulative energy impact remains substantial given millions of daily queries.Lastly, research published in Science has unveiled how birds and mammals have independently evolved complex brains through distinct pathways while achieving similar cognitive abilities. The study, led by Dr. Fernando García-Moreno, used advanced spatial transcriptomics and mathematical modeling to reveal fundamental differences in brain development between species. Despite using different genetic tools and developmental processes, both groups have achieved remarkable cognitive capabilities, challenging our traditional understanding of brain evolution and intelligence. From Perplexity's Discover Feed: https://www.perplexity.ai/page/irs-acquiring-nvidia-supercomp-bQ9BUXJuSLOUpHZdCJ.vEA https://www.perplexity.ai/page/chatgpt-energy-use-overestimat-cn02azRBR2._eM_sH2n_Pw https://www.perplexity.ai/page/complex-brains-evolved-indepen-uPS546tuRJaWwidjGvrNCQ**Introducing Perplexity Deep Research:**https://www.perplexity.ai/hub/blog/introducing-perplexity-deep-research Perplexity is the fastest and most powerful way to search the web. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Thursday, Nov. 14, 2024. Community organizations work to revitalize West Virginia's downtowns…Taste WV delivers the scoop on the Mountain State's food, hospitality and tourism industries…and did you know one of the country's earliest UFO sightings occurred over the New River Gorge?…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV EXECUTIVE – Throughout the Mountain State, revitalization efforts are bringing new life to downtown areas, helping transform them into vibrant hubs of community and commerce. Organizations like Main Street Martinsburg, RenewAll and Charleston Urban Works are working to better their downtown areas with help from volunteers, sponsors and organizational partners. Main Street Martinsburg is focusing on historic preservation, protection and use of Martinsburg's historic downtown area in order to boost economic development in the city. This commitment is evident in the broad spectrum of projects and events that MSM organizes, offering fun-filled activities for tourists and drawing in visitors. Meanwhile in Huntington, RenewAll recently transformed Central City Gazebo Park from a barren lawn into a lush public space equipped with trees, café tables and upgraded utilities for running food trucks. It is also putting the final touches on a public art installation. In the Capital City, Charleston Urban Works is working on the West Side Gateway Lighting Initiative, which will revolutionize public lighting in the area. The organization also focuses on enhancing public spaces and supporting business development through initiatives like its new business and property owner survey, which will help shape long-term work plans and goals through 2027. Taste West Virginia offers a fresh storytelling style shining a spotlight on some of the people and businesses shaping West Virginia hospitality. Read more: https://tastewv.com/category/food/ #3 – From WV EXPLORER – Did you know that one of the first UFO sightings reported in the U.S. may have originated in West Virginia over the region that's now part of the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve? The encounter allegedly occurred in January 1950 near Beckley, and over what is now the Summit Bechtel National Scout Reserve, which adjoins the national park. According to late historian C. Lloyd Gibson, Mount Hope Mayor Pat Garrett spotted the object on the skyline to the east of his home, which sits on a hill that overlooks the town. Becky Sullivan, executive director of the New River Gorge Convention and Visitors Bureau, says she'll be happy to speak with anyone about the encounter. “Mount Hope is a very interesting historical community, no less because the reserve is located there, but it's also at the gateway to the middle section of the New River Gorge National Park,” she said. A U.S. Intelligence military breach, lies, scandal, computer data hackings, killings and bribery that went up to the top of the government. The conspiracy even involved President Reagan himself. After a rejuvenating zero day to avoid the storms, I had one more day of road riding to catch my train. A familiar route, but not exactly one with mindfulness paid to bikes. Would I catch the train home? Celebrate 10 Years of Pedalshift Quick housekeeping if you missed last episode's live show news… I'm off to Oregon for the 10th anniversary tour: Oregon Coast Remixed! We'll pivot right into that as soon as we wrap up the C&O But Slow over the next few weeks, so stay tuned. Also another shout to Lael Wilcox's pod… her adventure around the world continues so make sure you follow along Lael Rides Around the World wherever you get this pod. Unless you get it off my website, in which case go google hers ;) C&O But Slow - Part 4 Introduction Good morning from the cabin. Discussion about the day's ride and weather conditions. Reflection on the decision to take a zero day due to bad weather. Travel Plans and Preparations Route description: predominantly downhill, then uphill, and flat sections. Mention of carrying less load compared to previous rides. Discussion on the necessity of taking the garbage to remote bins. Weather conditions: cold, layering up, and safety measures with lighting on the bike. Highlighting areas of exposure to highways and the importance of planning the ride to avoid rush. On the Road Experiences Initial thoughts after starting the ride and adjusting clothing layers. Navigating roads and using Google Maps for routing, challenges with algorithm recommendations. Encounter with the lowest elevation point near Back Creek and the difficulties with uphill rides. Discussion about the upcoming route, including passing the county landfill and Ridge Road's rollercoaster-like terrain. Mid-Ride Reflections Break to consume snacks and hydrate, reflection on time management for the ride. Encounter with local traffic and the need for careful navigation on Ridge Road. Challenges with the bike's mid gears and potential need for maintenance. Final Leg of the Journey Detailed description of the last few miles and final crossing of Highway 9. Observations on new constructions and reflections on the local area's development. Final thoughts on the ride, considering an e-bike for future trips for efficiency. Nearing the train station, managing time well and cooling down after the ride. Arrival at Martinsburg Train Station Reflection on the ease of the final stretch and the efficiency of the route taken. Thoughts on Martinsburg's potential and current state, including commuter resources. Preparing for the train ride back, discussion on local transit options and their effectiveness. Return to DC Arrival in DC, reflection on the overall trip and its unexpected developments. Observations on local cycling culture and the changes seen in the area. Mention of upcoming episodes and future plans for spring and summer. Statistics Miles biked 20.1 Trains taken 1 Bars eaten 2 Celebratory train beers 1 Flats 0
Finding my way back onto the C&O is hardly a surprise, but this spring's ride is taking a page from my 2024 goals… try to take some of these tours a little more slowly. On this preview episode, we cover how I think it'll go down. C&O But Slow Preview Celebrate 10 Years of Pedalshift Live 6/8 The march to the ten year anniversary of the show commences… Live show to celebrate things June 8th, time TBA, but mark it down now. It will be podcasted the following week but always down for some live banter. The basics Full size bike New config (more on that in a moment) Cumberland with Amtrak from DC and then… ? Going with a stove this time All camping Forecast looks like rain I'm getting over a cold, so not sure how that will impact things New config? The front rack from last season is fine but I want to try something new Found I couldn't get the bike in the Dogsbody bag last year and I didn't want to keep having to install/unintall. Might end up on my ebike? Solution: Fork bags + Hanging sleep kit from bars 7L each side Very narrow - a little too narrow? Allows me to be a bit more nimble Pacing First night will be close to a new moon unfortunately Would love to do 20 miles even though it's night riding Don't have specific plans for any particular campsites The end of the tour is up in the air… I have two options (Martinsburg and Harpers Ferry) so if I'm really enjoying the riding, I can make the miles. But if I'm enjoying the vibes (or other things) I can make this a shorter trip with some road riding on the final day Food/water Will likely carry more food than I have on past trips BUT going to do backpacking meals. Keeping it simple and light NPS no longer treats the wells, so I have a new gravity fed water filter. Trying not to carry as much as I have in the past Stove needed for meals, so I can at also enjoy coffee Weather Looks wet but not hot. Will be prepared This might be the thing that impacts choosing a short or long ride… trail conditions, preferring to stay in the tent for a morning rain, etc. etc. Other stuff Paw Paw tunnel is reopened! Not intending on climbing up to stay at my cabin (although it's a backup option) Name of the game is slow and steady and enjoying the ride rather than just banging out miles. Would have preferred a little more riding time on Saturday to spread it out a bit more
