Color: White Old Testament: Numbers 21:4–9 Psalm: Psalm 107:1–9; antiphon: v. 19 Epistle: 1 Timothy 2:1–6 Epistle: James 1:22–27 Gospel: John 16:23–33 Introit: Psalm 66:1–2a, 17, 19–20; antiphon: Isaiah 48:20b Verse: Liturgical Text; John 16:28 The Father Answers Our Prayers Because of Jesus   “Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you” (John 16:23). To pray in Jesus' name is to pray as one who has been baptized. For it is in the water that He put His name upon you, claiming you as His own, making you a son of God with access to the Father. By His incarnation and crucifixion, our Lord Jesus broke through the barrier of sin which separated us from God, opening a portal to the Father. To pray in Jesus' name is to pray with faith in Him as the one Mediator between God and men, who gave Himself a ransom for all (1 Tim. 2:1–6). Like Moses in the wilderness, Jesus is our go-between and intercessor before the throne of heaven. He was lifted up for us on the cross that we might be saved and restored to fellowship with the Father (Num. 21:4–9). Looking into this perfect teaching of liberty (James 1:22–27) we pray with boldness and confidence as dear children of God. Lectionary summary © 2021 The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod.

Hymn 194 - Abide with Us, the Day is Waning

The Twin Steeples Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 23, 2025 29:57

The fifth weekend after Easter is known as "Rogate Sunday." Rogate is the Latin word for "prayer." There is a connection between prayer and the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead. Jesus tells us to pray to the Father "in His name" and other passages of Scripture speak of praying "in the name of Jesus." But what value is prayer "in the name of Jesus" if He is dead? Prayer is only valuable if Jesus is living, interceding on our behalf before the Throne of God. So there is a rich connection between prayer and the celebration of Jesus' resurrection from the dead. This weekend we will be singing a meaningful hymn of Norwegian heritage written by Caspar Boye and based on the resurrection appearance of Jesus to the two men who were walking to the town of Emmaus on the day of Christ's resurrection. The theme of the hymn is taken from their request (prayer) of Jesus: "Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent." (Luke 24:29) This hymn highlights the power and value of prayer throughout. We ask: "Incline Thine ear, Thou King of Grace" (v.1). We acknowledge "In prayer devout, before Thee bending" (v.2). We recall "When Thou didst pray: 'Thy will be done'" (v.3). And we pray: "Abide with us" (v.3,4).  As we have before we focus on the topic of death. Paul declares: "The last enemy that will be destroyed is death." (1 Corinthians 15:26) He then continues: "So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” (1 Corinthians 15:54) Thanks be to God! Savior, strengthen us through the burdens of this sinful world with the confidence in Your victory and in the knowledge that because You live, our prayers in Your name are powerful and effective! Help us to make better use of this precious gift and privilege! Join us this weekend as we rejoice in these rich blessings of God's grace in Christ!

Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he send labourers into his harvest.Et dicebat illis : Messis quidem multa, operarii autem pauci. Old Testament: Numbers 21:4–9 Psalm: Psalm 107:1–9; antiphon: v. 19 Epistle: 1 Timothy 2:1–6 Epistle: James 1:22–27 Gospel: John 16:23–33 Gospel: John 16:23–30 Introit: Psalm 66:1–2a, 17, 19–20; antiphon: Isaiah 48:20b Verse: Liturgical Text; John 16:28 The Father Answers Our Prayers Because of Jesus   “Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you” (John 16:23). When Jesus tells you, “Ask, and you will receive” this is nothing other than an admonition to pray. God wants you to pray. He commands that you pray. And He promises to hear and answer your prayers. But many Christians are confused by prayer. How does it work? How do we do it? What should we pray for?…

Sermon for RogateThis means that Jesus here has laid out what is necessary for true prayer in the time of His resurrection and ascension – that is, our time now. You may have heard of many things that people have said are needed for a good prayer, or maybe just assumed some, and we will get to some wrong assumptions. But there are five things Jesus lays out here as necessary for true prayer. The promise of God, faith, something for which we pray, desire that the petition be granted, the name of Christ.

After the death of his teacher, according to reliable authority, he preached the gospel in Achaia, where he died a ripe old age. He earned undying glory by his writing of the Third Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles.
