The sermon from Rogate (commonly known as the Sixth Sunday of Easter) by Pastor Atkinson.
Lutheran Preaching and Teaching from St. John Random Lake, Wisconsin
May 10, 2026
May 10, 2026Today's Reading:John 16:23-30 (31-33)Daily Lectionary: Numbers 3:1-16, 39-48; Numbers 4:1-8:4; Luke 14:25-15:10“The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ‘Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, Thus you shall bless the people of Israel: you shall say to them, The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace. ‘So shall they put my name upon the people of Israel, and I will bless them.'” (Numbers 6:22-27)In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. There was an unwritten code in my college dorm room kitchen. If you didn't want someone absconding with your leftover microwave pizza or swiping those tasty homemade cookies mom sent you, you had better put your name on it. The name was a signal to my roommates. “This is mine. This belongs to me. This is something important and precious to me. Step away from the pizza!”Something similar, though in a far greater and gracious way, is happening when the Lord instructs Moses to declare to Aaron and his sons His words of blessing. We call it the Aaronic Benediction because it was given by God to Moses. And from Moses to Aaron. And from Aaron to his sons, the priests of Israel. And from the priests to the people of Israel. This benediction is more than a greeting, like sending someone a “get well” card or shooting off a quick text to your friend when they're sick: “Feel better, bro!” No. This is far better. For what the Lord says, he gives. What he promises, he delivers. When he tells Moses and Aaron to speak these words, his people are blessed as they hear them. The Lord's words bring His blessing, grace, and peace even while they're being spoken. You see, when our Lord wants to preserve, protect, and bring his promise to someone or something, He puts his name on it.The words and promises of this benediction are the Lord's way of sending a signal to Moses, Aaron, to all Israel, and to you. Our Lord poured his liquid benediction over you on the day of your Baptism. By water, word, and the Spirit, God placed his Holy Triune name upon you. And now, whenever you hear these words of benediction, the Lord says to you what he said to Israel: “You are mine. You belong to me. You are important and precious and beloved in my sight. You are holy. And you have my word and my name to back it up.” “So shall they put my name upon the people of Israel, and I will bless them.”In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.I the Lord will bless you and keep you And give you peace; I the Lord will smile upon you And give you peace: I the Lord will be your Father, Savior, Comforter, and Brother. Go, My children; I will keep you And give you peace. (LSB 922:4)Rev. Samuel Schuldheisz, pastor of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Milton, WA.
The process of growing is necessary to make a real plant. It's more than just appearances. This is an analogy for the Christian life. It is never about appearances. If it is about appearance to you, then the one you are deceiving most of all is yourself. This is what James says in chapter 1 – “Be doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”

Rey is a rescue dog who supports his human partner, Jack, with the challenges of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). What is striking is the reciprocity that defines this partnership, in which each is helping the other. There are many practical tasks that a PTSD service dog is trained to help its owner with day to day life However, it's the psychological impact that we explore in this episode. Owner Jack Billington says that of all the therapies and help he has accessed for his PTSD, Rey has been by far the most effective. He shares some of the nuances of the partnership with Kate Fairweather. A big thank you to Jack for coming onto the show and his openness in explaining the emotional and social aspects of his life, to which Rey has made such a difference. 1 And after these things the Lord appointed also other seventy-two: and he sent them two and two before his face into every city and place whither he himself was to come. 2 And he said to them: The harvest indeed is great, but the labourers are few. Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he send labourers into his harvest. 3 Go: Behold I send you as lambs among wolves.Ite : ecce ego mitto vos sicut agnos inter lupos. 4 Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes; and salute no man by the way. 5 Into whatsoever house you enter, first say: Peace be to this house. In quamcumque domum intraveritis, primum dicite : Pax huic domui : 6 And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon him; but if not, it shall return to you.et si ibi fuerit filius pacis, requiescet super illum pax vestra : sin autem, ad vos revertetur. 7 And in the same house, remain, eating and drinking such things as they have: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Remove not from house to house. 8 And into what city soever you enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you.Et in quamcumque civitatem intraveritis, et susceperint vos, manducate quae apponuntur vobis : 9 And heal the sick that are therein, and say to them: The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.et curate infirmos, qui in illa sunt, et dicite illis : Appropinquavit in vos regnum Dei.St Paul all his life had a burning love for Jesus. He founded the Congregation of Passionists. He and his brethren were preachers of "the mystery of the cross and devotion to the Passion". He died A.D. 1775.

To pray in Jesus' name is to pray as one who has been baptized. For it is in the water that He put His name upon you, claiming you as His own, making you a son of God with access to the Father. By His incarnation and crucifixion, our Lord Jesus broke through the barrier of sin which separated us from God, opening a portal to the Father. To pray in Jesus' name is to pray with faith in Him as the one Mediator between God and men, who gave Himself a ransom for all (1 Tim. 2:1–6). Like Moses in the wilderness, Jesus is our go-between and intercessor before the throne of heaven. He was lifted up for us on the cross that we might be saved and restored to fellowship with the Father (Num. 21:4–9). Looking into this perfect teaching of liberty (James 1:22–27) we pray with boldness and confidence as dear children of God. Lectionary summary © 2021 The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. Christians do not have a promise of an easy life, that is not our joy. Asking and receiving is the key to joy in this life.
Numbers 21:4-9 1 Timothy 2:1-6 John 16:23-30Rev. Adam Moline
The fifth weekend after Easter is known as "Rogate Sunday." Rogate is the Latin word for "prayer." There is a connection between prayer and the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead. Jesus tells us to pray to the Father "in His name" and other passages of Scripture speak of praying "in the name of Jesus." But what value is prayer "in the name of Jesus" if He is dead? Prayer is only valuable if Jesus is living, interceding on our behalf before the Throne of God. So there is a rich connection between prayer and the celebration of Jesus' resurrection from the dead. This weekend we will be singing a meaningful hymn of Norwegian heritage written by Caspar Boye and based on the resurrection appearance of Jesus to the two men who were walking to the town of Emmaus on the day of Christ's resurrection. The theme of the hymn is taken from their request (prayer) of Jesus: "Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent." (Luke 24:29) This hymn highlights the power and value of prayer throughout. We ask: "Incline Thine ear, Thou King of Grace" (v.1). We acknowledge "In prayer devout, before Thee bending" (v.2). We recall "When Thou didst pray: 'Thy will be done'" (v.3). And we pray: "Abide with us" (v.3,4). As we have before we focus on the topic of death. Paul declares: "The last enemy that will be destroyed is death." (1 Corinthians 15:26) He then continues: "So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” (1 Corinthians 15:54) Thanks be to God! Savior, strengthen us through the burdens of this sinful world with the confidence in Your victory and in the knowledge that because You live, our prayers in Your name are powerful and effective! Help us to make better use of this precious gift and privilege! Join us this weekend as we rejoice in these rich blessings of God's grace in Christ!
