Have you ever been on the wrong end of unfair treatment, bias, or one-sided favoritism? Was someone treated better than you because of their money or last name? This kind of favoritism is common in a sinful, secular world, but something is really wrong when this kind of prejudice shows up inside the church. In James chapter two, what does James say about discrimination and favoritism in the church?  What are four reasons why favoritism is forbidden?  (James, part 3)

PAUL'S EPISTLE TO THE ROMANS | The church in Rome had existed for some time and was made up of Jewish and non-Jewish followers. But at one point sometime between A.D. 41-53, Emperor Claudius expelled all of the Jewish people, including Christian Jews from Rome and then allowed them to return five years later (see Acts 18:2). When these Jews returned they found a church that had become very non-Jewish in custom and practice. This created lots of tension so that in Paul's day the Roman Church was divided. People disagreed about how to follow Jesus, they were debating about whether non-Jewish Christians should celebrate the sabbath, eat kosher, or be circumcised. So Paul wrote this letter to accomplish a few things. He wanted this divided church to become unified and for a practical purpose, he was hoping the church would become a staging ground for his mission to go even further west to Spain. For these reasons, Paul wrote Romans. Romans is Paul's fullest explanation of the gospel; the good news that he was announcing about Jesus' life, death, and resurrection and it's effect on Creation and the church.

I was saved at the age of sixteen by Jesus's death and resurrection, but I remained un-discipled for a few years until I attended a Bible college. My faith grew immensely due to the solid Bible teaching and professors who loved Jesus. However, I felt out of place on campus. Other students would gushingly share stories of how they were saved at the young age of five or seven. I couldn't relate to their experiences at summer Bible camps or youth group excursions. Because of this, I thought that somehow, I didn't belong..Even when I found a local church, I continued to feel out of place because I hadn't grown up in church. From the hymns, to the structure of services, to the overall “church culture,” it all seemed foreign to me. But even worse than feeling like I didn't belong was the idea that God couldn't impact others through my life because I was unfamiliar with the established culture of the church..I wish I'd known sooner that God does not show favoritism. Throughout the Bible, the Lord worked through people of various backgrounds and ages to spread the good news of His kingdom. From young Timothy, who was raised by his Christian mom and grandma but may have felt unqualified for church leadership because of his youth... to elderly Moses, who was raised by people who worshipped idols but was called by the Lord to lead Israel out of Egypt at the age of eighty, God does not have favorites..Throughout the Bible, God called shepherds, tentmakers, a doctor, people who had been demon-possessed, prostitutes, and even someone who had formerly persecuted Christians to tell the world of His grace through Jesus.* Today, He calls believers of all different backgrounds, ethnicities, experiences, and ages to be part of His good work. A person's ability to bring glory to the Lord is not based on when they were saved, but on the One who saved them. • Sophia Bricker.• Have you ever felt like you didn't belong in a group of Christians? Sadly, this happens to a lot of us. In times like these, how could it be helpful to remember how God sees us? .• What are some ways we can be hospitable to people who have a variety of life experiences? .• Have you ever felt unqualified to serve God because of your age or experiences? How could the stories of people in the Bible give you hope? (*If you want to dig deeper, read Luke 2:8-20; 8:1-3; John 20:11-18; Acts 18:2-3; Colossians 4:14; 2 Timothy 1:5; 3:15; Hebrews 11.).For God does not show favoritism. Romans 2:11 (NLT)

In James 2:1-13, James gets all up in our business again instructing us that the church is to be different from the world by not having favorites. There are many scenarios to consider to help us assess where we tend to show favoritism based on class, appearance, and power. We must be different from the world by seeing the value in the people that are often cast out.

Readings: Sirach 35:12–14, 16–18 Psalm 34:2–3, 17–19, 23 2 Timothy 4:6–8, 16–18 Luke 18:9–14 Jesus draws a blunt picture in today's Gospel. The Pharisee's prayer is almost a parody of the thanksgiving psalms (see for example Psalms 30, 118). Instead of praising God for His mighty works, the Pharisee congratulates himself for his own deeds, which he presents to God in some detail. The tax collector stands at a distance, too ashamed even to raise his eyes to God (see Ezra 9:6). He prays with a humble and contrite heart (see Psalm 51:19). He knows that before God no one is righteous, no one has cause to boast (see Roman 3:10; 4:2). We see in the Liturgy today one of Scripture's abiding themes: that God “knows no favorites,” as today's First Reading tells us (see 2 Chronicles 19:7; Acts 10:34–35; Romans 2:11). God cannot be bribed (see Deuteronomy 10:17). We cannot curry favor with Him or impress Him—even with our good deeds or our faithful observance of religious duties such as tithing and fasting. If we try to exalt ourselves before the Lord, as the Pharisee does, we will be brought low (see Luke 1:52). This should be a warning to us—not to take pride in our piety, not to slip into the self-righteousness of thinking that we're better than others, that we're “not like the rest of sinful humanity.” If we clothe ourselves with humility (see 1 Peter 5:5–6), if we recognize that all of us are sinners in need of His mercy, we will be exalted (see Proverbs 29:33). The prayer of the lowly, the humble, pierces the clouds. Paul testifies to this in today's Epistle as He thanks the Lord for giving him strength during his imprisonment. Paul tells us what the Psalmist sings today—that the Lord redeems the lives of His humble servants. We too must serve Him willingly. And He will hear us in our distress, deliver us from evil, and bring us safely to His heavenly kingdom.

James explains that mature, solid Christianity is focused inside, not outside. It tries to see the heart and the soul, not the externals. It sees everyone equally. A wise Christian judges, but with mercy and compassion. They do not make judgments based on externals alone. This week try to see everyone as Christ would see them.

The Letter of James is one of the earliest New Testament documents, written between 40 AD and 62 AD. Sometimes called “the Proverbs of the New Testament,” it's an intensely practical book. The Apostle James, the brother of our Lord, is jealous for God's people to demonstrate the kind of virtue, character, and self-control that can only be explained by the power of the gospel. In this series, we seek to grow as lovers of God and doers of the word through the earthy wisdom of the book of James.

God Has No FavoritesAnyone who trusts Jesus is welcomed into His family, the church, for God shows no favoritism in the invitation of the gospel.---God can do amazing things through ordinary people who are empowered by the Holy Spirit. In the book of Acts, the Holy Spirit was given to all believers and the church was born. The church is God's chosen instrument in the world for sharing the good news about Jesus Christ. The book of Acts is all about the unhindered movement of God throughout the world as the gospel of Jesus Christ is proclaimed through the church. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, the early church was an unstoppable movement that proclaimed the Kingdom of God and Jesus Christ as the only way to eternal life. Today, the church empowered by the Holy Spirit is called to continue God's redeeming work in the world by fulfilling God's mission of making Jesus known to the ends of the earth. Acts of the Apostles 10:34-48 NLTThen Peter replied, “I see very clearly that God shows no favoritism. In every nation he accepts those who fear him and do what is right. This is the message of Good News for the people of Israel—that there is peace with God through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. You know what happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee, after John began preaching his message of baptism. And you know that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. “And we apostles are witnesses of all he did throughout Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a cross, but God raised him to life on the third day. Then God allowed him to appear, not to the general public, but to us whom God had chosen in advance to be his witnesses. We were those who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. And he ordered us to preach everywhere and to testify that Jesus is the one appointed by God to be the judge of all—the living and the dead. He is the one all the prophets testified about, saying that everyone who believes in him will have their sins forgiven through his name.” Even as Peter was saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who were listening to the message. The Jewish believers who came with Peter were amazed that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles, too. For they heard them speaking in other tongues and praising God.Then Peter asked, “Can anyone object to their being baptized, now that they have received the Holy Spirit just as we did?” So he gave orders for them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Afterward Cornelius asked him to stay with them for several days. 1. God does not show favoritism, Jesus is Lord of all – Imitate Him. (v. 34-36)2. Everyone who believes in Jesus will have their sins forgiven – Proclaim Him. (v. 43) • • •Challenge: Our attitude as Christians toward people who do not know God is extremely important. There is no place in the life of a Christian for discrimination against others. How is your attitude and actions toward others? Is your attitude toward people who don't know God one of concern and love for them? Peter's story reminds us that God wants to instill in us His attitude toward the world.
