January 8, 1964. In his State of the Union address, Lyndon Johnson unveils his War on Poverty, an effort to tackle subpar living conditions and create jobs across the United States. Johnson discovers that declaring war—even one on an idea—always comes with great costs. Why did LBJ pick poverty as one of his major initiatives? And what is the legacy of the war he started? Special thanks to Doris Kearns Goodwin, historian and author of Lyndon Johnson and the American Dream; and Guian McKee, professor of public affairs at the University of Virginia's Miller Center. **This episode originally aired on January 1, 2021. EDINBURG, Texas - Hidalgo County Judge Richard Cortez has been named honorary Field Marshal for the War on Poverty in Hidalgo County. The award was bestowed by Hidalgo County's Community Service Agency (CSA) at the group's inaugural Access to Success Program Banquet, held Dec. 12 at Monza Social Event Center in Edinburg. “We have amongst us someone who walked the walk and said we're going to do this (wage a battle against poverty). And this is an important award because this is our inaugural event,” said CSA Director Jaime R. Longoria. Cortez could not be present to accept the award because he was out of town on business. So, Longoria presented the award jointly on Cortez's behalf to Hilda Salinas, who assists Cortez in the Hidalgo County Judge's Office, and Mario Reyna, coordinator for the Hidalgo County Prosperity Task Force. The task force was set up by Judge Cortez to tackle poverty.  From the podium, Longoria pointed out that although Hidalgo County's Community Service Agency was started in the 1970s it has its roots in President Johnson's War on Poverty initiative of the 1960s. “The War on Poverty was declared 60 years ago in 1964. Sixty years ago, LBJ came up with this idea of taking federal money and moving it to the local level and allowing the local communities to spend the money the way they saw fit and develop programs for people that were living in poverty, to make decisions about how best to address poverty,” Longoria said. Longoria said that is what Hidalgo County does every day. “We have local control of these two million dollars to assist families. Part of the money is for emergency services, families that are in (a) domestic violence (situation) or lose their house to a fire or something like that. Part of the money actually goes to running this particular program.” Longoria paid tribute to President Johnson.  “So back in '64 this whole idea of bringing federal money to a local level was kind of novel. It was new. And so, the community action agencies were formed to administer these dollars. We are the direct descendants of LBJ's war on poverty.” A president may declare war on poverty but at the waterfront, a nation still needs people to wage that war, Longoria said. “We need people to plan for it. We need people to be visionaries, to motivate, to direct and to defend the water. We need leaders dedicated to winning the war,” Longoria said. “We need to have someone, a champion, who says we can win this war. Even 60 years later, we need to be reminded that the war is important to fight.” That person in Hidalgo County has been Judge Cortez, Longoria said. Editor's Note: To read the full story go to the Rio Grande Guardian website.Go to www.riograndeguardian.com to read the latest border news stories and watch the latest news videos.

SERIES 2 EPISODE 136: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: What President Biden should say in The State of the Union tonight is, to declare, simply and directly, that of all the threats to the United States of America the greatest of these is Donald John Trump and thus tonight I am declaring The Biden Doctrine. And in sum, my fellow Americans, the Biden Doctrine is this: we must save our country from madness and vengeance and hate and racism and dictatorship, and to save our country from these evils, we must metaphorically kick the ever-loving shit out of Donald Trump. Instead, the White House expects Biden to deliver a traditional speech that will re-set the campaign. The problem is, it'll be designed for a major event in the life of the nation called The State of the Union that… doesn't exist any more. 53 million people watched Bill Clinton's tension-filled post-Lewinsky State of the Union in 1998. That was 20 percent of the population. Last year? Biden had 27 million viewers and not a whole lot of streamers.  The other problem is, 538 researched Presidential Approval before and after each SOTU since 1978 and the average change in approval is a microscopic 1.9%. The all-time highest was Clinton's 10% gain after he stared down the Republicans post-Lewinsky. If you really do think this is your last chance to fundamentally re-set the race, then gimme The Biden Doctrine. What IS the Biden Doctrine about? The Biden Doctrine is about the greatest threat facing this nation. And what IS the greatest threat to the nation? It's Trump. It's Trump's Cult. It's Trump's madness. It's Trump's racism. It's Trump's desire to be a dictator. It's Trump's next coup. Do it. If they build statues to President Joseph Robinette Biden Junior it will be for saving this nation from Donald Trump. Twice. There is no reason to back away from the easiest to understand accomplishment. There is no reason to hide from what even HE says is the reason he IS running again: to stop Trump and save representative government. Pound the son of a bitch in the ground, like you did at Independence Hall in September '22. You'll get ten percent approval growth just for THAT. And don't forget to join me live on YouTube and Twitch right after the speech for the Countdown With Keith Olbermann State of the Union Post-Game Show. Biden starts about 9 ET, I should start around 10. Be there. Aloha. B-Block (22:59) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Bill Hemmer says because they cut away from Trump's "victory" speeches CNN and MSNBC should drop "news" from their names. Hilariously, last month Fox News... cut away from Trump's "victory" speeches. Politico and 60,000 other news organizations devoted space to a Democratic presidential candidate who got exactly 51 votes on Tuesday. And Elon Musk a) lied about Biden bringing in foreigners to vote b) lied when he called it "treason" c) probably lied about not helping Trump with financing and d) on the other hand, a candidate he opposed this week won by 2 to 1. C-Block (33:13) THURSDAYS WITH THURBER: They're all brilliantly written. But "The Car We Had To Push" is brilliantly written to be read aloud. One I've never read you before, from his classic book about his childhood in Columbus, Ohio: "My Life And Hard Times."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

During Lydon Johnson's 4 years in office, his administration shepherded through: The Civil Rights Act, The Voting Rights Act, The Economic Opportunity Act, Upward Bound, The Job Corps, Head Start, Community Action Agencies, The Elementary and Secondary Education Act, Medicare and Medicaid, The National Endowment for the Arts and Humanities, The Corporation for Public Broadcasting, PBS, and NPR, The Urban Mass Transportation Act, Cigarette Labelling and Advertising Act, The Motor Vehicle Safety Act, The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Fair Packaging and Labeling Act, The Child Safety Act of 1966, The Water Quality Act, The Housing and Urban Development Act, The Fair Labor Standards Act, and many many other programs designed to eliminate poverty in America.  By eliminating poverty, he didn't only mean financial poverty, yet this isn't to say that LBJ ignored the economics at all. You might recall from our first episode Johnson saying, "This administration here and now declares unconditional war on poverty in America.” But we still see poverty in America today, so does that mean the war on poverty failed?  In this episode, we'll look at the legacies of the Great Society, the War on Poverty, and LBJ's Presidency.  And we'll ask, what did the policies that came out of his administration mean for the American Safety Net and why aren‘t more people aware of LBJ's social policy legacy?  Special thanks to our guests for this episode, Erine Gray, Guian McKee, Martha Baily, Julian Zelizer, Mark Updegrove, H.W. Podcast #20 War on Poverty and BTUs Welcome back friends to In My Right Mind w/ me, the ever-expressive Russ Andrews. As always, I am joined by the very cogent PJ Jaycox. How goes it PJ? While researching today's show PJ, I ran across a poll from a group called “Law Enforcement Today.” This poll was taken on Feb 25 this year; less than 2 months ago. In the poll, they asked how the respondents viewed themselves ploitically. The choices were: Very Liberal Liberal Moderate Conservative & Very Conservative. Then they asked respondents in each group how many unarmed blacks were killed by cops in 2019. The answer runs from 9-27, depending on the website or news show you visit or watch. The most common answer is 19, so I'll go with that. 19 so-called unarmed blacks killed by police in 2019. THEN, they asked respondents simply “How many unarmed black Americans were shot by police in 2019? Very Liberal:      53% said more than 1,000                              22% said more than 10,000 Just Liberal:       39% 1,000 or more. You see folks…this is what we are dealing with; people who know NOTHING…Complete dipshits who are willfully and dogmatically ignorant….about everything. Yet they are absolutely certain they are right…about all things…because they choose their “truth over actual facts.” And we are supposed to listen to these idiots and subscribe to their truths, regardless of how specious they are, otherwise we are racist, misogynist, deniers. Btw, only 13% of self-identified conservatives in the poll said 1,000 or more unarmed blacks were killed by cops in 2019. Proving once again that it we who are the informed group. THE WAR ON SANITY: With all of that in mind, I want to start off by addressing this ridiculous push by the socialists to insist that if you are white, that you are a racist, and that our whole society is in fact built around the concept of denying black people the ability to climb the American ladder of prosperity. I mean…that's why you wake up every morning isn't it PJ….to deny blacks their civil rights, huh??? Understand that the #1, founding principle of the neo-liberal movement was the eradication of racism…which was certainly a good and noble cause, and by and large has been accomplished. Don't believe me…then I give you as exhibit #1 Barrack Hussein Obama; a black man who was elected to our highest office…twice. Neo-liberals created a monster when they created the welfare state via the so-called “War On Poverty” on January 8, 1964; when Lyndon Johnson stated that "Our aim is not only to relieve the symptom of poverty, but to cure it and, above all, to prevent it". When in fact, he guaranteed it…poverty.. to continue into perpetuity. The so-called War on Poverty really turned out to be the War On Sanity, as the implied guarantee was that the state could…and in fact should…replace the father as head of household. If any of this sounds familiar, it's because we covered this topic in detail on our second podcast. I just wanted to add some thoughts, and understand folks that for the last 12 yrs I have re-visited this inane topic about every 6 months due to national headline events. The War On Sanity has been an experiment that has led to squallor, crime, mass-incarceration, tens of millions of wasted lives and thousands of murders. My thesis on this topic is that when Lyndon Johnson created the modern welfare state, that he purposely eliminated the father as head of household by essentially paying single women; women of color and white women, in a myriad of ways, to reproduce out of wedlock. The useful idiots whom most people call democrat voters, or whom I call neo-liberals, loved the...

#13 Welcome back friends to In My Right Mind w/ me…Russ Andrews, along with the silver-tongued PJ Jaycox. What's up PJ? Music: Simon and Garfield…The Boxer.   The Democrat platform is built on a house of cards…called lies.   Their social justice meme is built on the concept that all white people are racists, that our country was founded in 1619 to facilitate the slave trade, and that gangs of rogue, white cops roam the streets every nite ambushing and slaughtering 1000's of black males between the ages of 15-40. Their environmental activism is built around a hoax that the planet has a severe fever and somehow they are going to fix it…but their fixes ALWAYS include separating you and me from our hard-earned money, and from our god-given rights.   Their recent moves to silence…then punish free speech are centered around their lie that all 75 myn Trump voters are violent, white supemecists. Accordingly, neo-liberal -socialists need to confiscate all weapons to protect our “democracy” from domestic terrorism. Their incessant rhetoric about how wealthy citizens don't pay their fair share of the tax burden are belied by the fact that the top 1% of American wage earners pay 38.5% of all income taxes; the highest burden in the WORLD! Their insistance that an economic system that is run by the federal gov't from a centralized location 1000's of miles from where many of it's citizens live, administered by people who have never run anything, much less a business, with an emphasis on political patronage to donors and friends vs on products and profits is more efficient than a system that functions based upon the needs of consumers, which rewards risk-takers who innovate and create and produce products that make our lives longer, healthier and happier. (a system that has failed everywhere it has been implemented). Their lies have been force-fed down the throats of unsuspecting Americans by the left-wing-nut-media…or the so-called 4th estate, their lies have been shoved down our vulnerable kids throats in K-12 & College indoctrination camps, in movies and television shows, and of course on so-called social media. So let's flesh this stuff out PJ.   SOCIAL JUSTICE: We have discussed the root causes of black poverty and it's associated crime on several podcasts, so let's just do a quick review. The common belief peddled by BLM, ANTIFA and neo-liberals in general is that gangs of racist, rogue, white cops are hunting and assassinating young black males by the 100's every nite. IN FACT (not their truth..but in actual fact), a grand total of 15 so-called unarmed black males were killed by cops in 2019. At the advent of the welfare state, launched by Lyndon Johnson 56 yrs ago in his War On Poverty..which I call the War On Sanity, the black out of wedlock birth rate was about 23.5%. The War on Sanity's implied promise was that the state could replace the father as head of household. Since 1965, the out of wedlock, single parent birth rate in the black community has more than tripled to 77%. Neo-liberals LOVE their welfare state, and will NEVER admit that the cause of any racial injustice is of their own making, but let me refresh your memory as to what they have wrought, because it turns out that the gov't can NEVER replace the father as head of household: Fatherless children of all races, face the following stats: *4 x greater risk of living in poverty. 4x *85% of youths in prisons grew up in a fatherless home. *More than 90% of all felons, across the nation, were raised in fatherless homes. 90% *63% of youth suicides are from fatherless homes – 5 times the average. *90% of all homeless and runaway children are from fatherless homes – 32 times the average.  *80% of rapists come from fatherless homes –14 times the average. 80% *71% of all high school dropouts come from fatherless...

This past summer saw a world of hurt in our biggest, democrat run cities. So I want to focus this podcast on: Fatherless Children and the War On Sanity: In today's podcast I want to discuss how fatherless children contribute to poverty and crime rates, and I want to analyze Lyndon Johnson's War On Poverty, which was really a war on sanity. In 1965, Lyndon Johnson tacitly implied that the state could and should replace the father as head of household. It has been an experiment that has led to squallor, crime, incarceration, tens of millions of wasted lives and thousands of murders. “In 1965, 24 percent of black infants and 3.1 percent of white infants were born to single mothers. In 2015, an astounding 77% of black infants were born fatherless vs about 18% of white kids. Fatherless children of all races, ALL RACES face the following stats: *4 x greater risk of living in poverty *85% of youths in prisons grew up in a fatherless home. *More than 90% of all felons, across the nation, were raised in fatherless homes *63% of youth suicides are from fatherless homes (US Dept. Of Health/Census) – 5 times the average. *90% of all homeless and runaway children are from fatherless homes – 32 times the average. *85% of all children who show behavior disorders come from fatherless homes – 17 times the average. (Center for Disease Control) *80% of rapists come from fatherless homes –14 times the average. (Justice & Behavior, Vol 14, p. 403-26) *71% of all high school dropouts come from fatherless homes – 9 times the average. (National Principals Association Report) 75% of all adolescent patients in chemical abuse centers come from fatherless homes – 10 times the average. *70% of youths in state-operated institutions come from fatherless homes – 9 times the average. (U.S. Dept. of Justice, Sept. 1988) *71% of pregnant teenagers lack a father. [U.S. Department of Health and Human Services press release, Friday, March 26, 1999] *90% of adolescent repeat arsonists live with only their mother. [Wray Herbert, “Dousing the Kindlers,” Psychology Today, January, 1985, p. 28] Children with involved Fathers are 40% less likely to repeat a grade in school. Children with involved Fathers are 70% less likely to drop out of school. Children with involved Fathers are more likely to get A's in school. So, what is A definition of so-called “white privelage”? If you compare 100,000 white kids to 100,000 black kids, then by more than a 17:4 ratio, white kids grow up in 2 parent households v black kids. Let me repeat that: by more than a 17:4 ratio, white kids grow up in 2 parent households, and I maintain that is the best definition of so-called “white privelage”. Non-hispanic blacks comprise 12.1% of our population. Black males between the ages of 15-40 represent approx 3% of our population. Yet black males aged 15-40 commit 37.8% of all violent crimes, 54% of all robberies and 53.3% of all murders. Repeat: black males ages 15-40 make-up 3% of our population, but commit 37.8% of all violent crimes, 54% of all...

Tune in for a breath taking episode on the war on poverty. In 1964 President Lyndon B Johnson declared an “unconditional war on poverty”. He wanted to ultimately eliminate it from American society. However, the war on poverty continues and the struggle still rages on. Poverty, as Aristotle stated, “is the parent of revolution and crime.” ― AristotleSupport the cause of restoring the dignity of the voiceless by visiting www.bpmproduction.org and make your contribution.
