All the cool kids are drinking Little Beers Braving the snowy (yes, snowy) April weather in Georgia, 100s of beer lovers gathered in Duluth, GA recently to celebrated their love of low ABV beers. Little Beer Fest II brought brewers together from across the country for this invitation-only event. Brewers shared their best beers under (or close to it) 4.0%. Wrapped in our hoodies and holding down our tent we managed to chat with of the brewers in attendance, plus some of the crew from The Atlanta Podcast featuring Myron Green and Christian Andrews. TAP covers events in and around Atlanta while enjoy local beer. Give 'em a listen. Next up is Nashville's Barrique Brewing and Blending where we talk with Spencer Longhurst about mixed fermentation beers and 2nd use hops. Chris Tropeano and Jon Eberhart from Charlotte's Resident Culture Brewing join to talk about experimental hops, the Charlotte beer scene, and the great Cold IPA debate. Rounding out the show we talk with Wren House Brewing Co. out of Phoenix, AZ with Mason and Kyle about lager production, Phoenix breweries, and crisp vs. crispy beers. Matty and Noah are talking remotely with the Kryptic Kid, the Vibe Valet, or simply the current head brewer at Twelve Percent Beer Project: Zac Ross. Though he and Noah are the same age, Zac's worked in 500% more breweries, including Voodoo, Kent Falls, The Answer. These days, while he's keeping the day-to-day in order at Twelve Percent's largely contract-based production facility, he's also producing beers for his own brand, Marlowe Artisanal Ales. His interesting arch in the industry isn't neglected from the conversation, but all roads of dialogue keep leading to Marlowe - a brand named after the proverbial Boss Ross (Zac's grandfather) that produces almost exclusively on sessionable, lower ABV beers. Zac breaks down the particular advantages Twelve Percent provides people like himself, who want to eventually open a brick-and-mortar brewery, but are getting their beers into the world at scale, in a way to give their goal steam. Brewing philosophy dominates most of the conversation, with Zac's admittedly vague and "vibe-focused" approach providing a fun contrast to Noah's more obnoxious and verbose angle to discussing the profession they both love so much. This was a fun one, and ultimately takes a long look at the relationship between the place a beer is produced and the person that conceived of it. Denny and Drew are recovering from their road trip! So here's a revisit of our very first Q&A show It's Episode 10 and it's finally time to see if we're as smart as we say we are. We discuss the listener response to our Session Beer efforts and promise to post a kickass list of session beer recipes. (Link below) We run off to the pub and discuss the recently concluded Pacific Northwest Homebrewers Conference and the lameness of "pink washing" and silly sexism. And then to the lecture hall where "Professors" Denny and Drew sit down and try and see how long they can fake actually knowing anything. For listener ease we've broken the questions up into categories so you can find things more easily. OVer the course of twenty some odd questions we tackle questions about ingredients, process, styles, yeast and everything else. Before we leave, Drew gives a brief shout out to two very impactful passings that recently occurred. One to the man whose decision in the 70's still impacts us to this day. The other, well, that one's more important to Chihuahua owners. What does "sessionable" even mean? This week, we try to demystify this commonly used beer phrase. Grab a session beer and join us.
This week we try our ESC Scottish Light and start a sporadic discussion series on Session Beer
Session Beer-This category includes any style of beer made lower in strength than described in the classic style guidelines. These beers should exhibit lower alcohol content than the classic style.-Drinkability is key to a successful session beer. – not a “one and you are done” beer-Beers exceeding 5.0% abv are not categorized as Session Beers. Usually lighter in color-Beara Brewing Co. – had higher ABV beers - brewed a Session Beer called Citra Wit – wheat beer made with Citra Hops – 4.8%-Color: The color should mimic the classic style upon which the beer is based-Clarity: Appearance may vary from brilliant to hazy to cloudy and should mimic the classic style upon which the beer is based-Aroma – According to style-Hop Aroma and Flavor and Bitterness - IBU 10-35 – not overwhelming-Body: According to style-ABV: 3.7%-5.0%-Glassware: Depends on styleSession India Pale Ale-Another category for Session Beer – sometimes so many that separate category has to be created -Perceived Hop Aroma & Flavor: Hop aroma and flavor are medium to high and can display qualities from a wide variety of hops from all over the world. Overall hop character is assertive.-Perceived Bitterness: Medium to high (IBU) 40-55-IPA’s exceeding 5.0% abv are not categorized as Session Beers.-Color: Gold to copper-Clarity: Chill haze is acceptable at low temperatures. Hop haze is allowable at any temperature.-Body: Low to medium-ABV: 3.7%-5.0%Session Beer (courtesy of Beer Advocate)(https://www.beeradvocate.com)Highway 128 Session Series: Blood Orange GoseAnderson Valley Brewing Co - Boonville, CAABV – 4.2%Notes / Commercial Description: Our Blood Orange Gose is a tart, refreshing wheat ale that is kettle-soured with lactobacillus and brewed with sea salt and coriander. However, unlike traditional versions of the style, ours features liberal additions of blood oranges during fermentation. This imparts tangy citrus notes that complement the champagne-like flavors, creating a complex and sessionable ale perfect for any occasion.Easy Jack Session IPAFirestone Walker Brewing Co. - Paso Robles, CAABV - 4.5%Brewmaster Matt Brynildson went to the mountain and returned with a vision for a different kind of Session IPA, one that would be brewed and dry hopped with a globetrotting selection of new hop varieties from Europe, New Zealand and North America. He foresaw a beer that would deliver massive hop aromas, a signature malt balance and an empty glass before you knew what hit you. And so the newest member of our Jack IPA family was born.Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NHMichael PotortiFounder/BrewerHost of "Craft Beer Storm" Podcastmichael@craftbeerstorm.commichael@bearairishbrew.com*** Come visit our brewery for some delicious local craft brew! ***Beara Brewing Co.2800 Lafayette RoadPortsmouth, NH 03801Tel. Yup, one Erdinger a day keeps the Doctor away. Katy (@klwatts) is joined by Amanda Barriage and Sasha Dunfield (@OttBeerEvents) to taste different non-alcoholic beers, talk about how they are made and if it's a growing market segment. Show Notes: How is non-alcoholic beer made? Amanda is right, NA beer can be used as a sports drink! Really, the trend here is that we miss hops. AB-InBev believes there's a trend towards people drinking NA beer, what do you think? It's funny. I normally drink NA beer out of the can/bottle, but drinking them out of the 613BeerCast tasting glasses gave me completely different flavours. NA beer sampling doesn't take a long time because there isn't a lot of complexity or flavour. How will you survive nine months without drinking beer? Cheers to drinking while pregnant!
