Co-Founder Adin Wener joined Cee and Nate to chat about their gateway approach to beer, their incredible partnership with Rush, how the expiration of the Master Framework Agreement isn't going to be the craft beer boom a lot of people think it will be, why they're ending their Ides series and the upcoming book, the importance of winning over your local crowd, their unique partnership with Bench Brewing, Pickle Fest and their awesome Pearson Airport bar collab with Rush. They got into a bunch of Hendo gems, including Henderson's Best Amber Ale, Meek Joe Mild IPA (Ides of April 2024), Super Joe Strong IPA (Ides of April 2024), Rush Canadian Golden Ale, Rush X-1 Xanabrew II Belgian Black Ale. In this first of a three-episode miniseries on Las Vegas brewers, timed to give you more local knowledge as you head to the desert for this year's Craft Brewer's Conference, Able Baker (https://ablebakerbrewing.com) Director of Brewing Matt Marino discusses his evolving approach to modern West coast IPA and hazy session IPA. Through the conversation, he touches on: brewing oversized batches at high gravity to maximize output from their 15bbl brewhouse pushing extreme attenuation to hit a 1.4-1.6°P finishing gravity in a 7% ABV IPA making the move from 2 row malt to pilsner malt selecting hops and hop formats for survivability and efficiency fermenting with non-diacetyl-producing yeast recirculating while dry hopping to maximize extraction in West coast IPA the constant evolution of recipes for the brewery's most popular brands blending to create new beers the best beer-related (and non-beer-related) things to do while visiting Las Vegas And more. Sitting just east of Toronto, the Durham region boasts around 16 breweries to date, and the brewery that set it all off around a decade ago is the fine folks at 5 Paddles. Hailing from Whitby, ON, 5 Paddles was the area frontrunner for craft beer, helping many of their fellow breweries get off the ground, and now they're under new ownership with a rebrand and a slew of great new and classic beers on offer. Head Brewer Garett joined Cee and Nate to chat about the brewery's new beginnings, why they're not diving deep into Pumpkinpalooza this year, the direction they'll be going in, their impact on Durham craft beer, and how they embrace their community both new and old. When Jeremy Kosmicki was promoted off the Founders packaging line to the brewhouse in the early 2000's, he relished the opportunity to jump from homebrewing to their 30bbl brewhouse. Over the past two decades, he's overseen the brewing program while the brewery experienced remarkable growth—launching pivotal brands like All Day IPA, scaling production by orders of magnitude—and since Founders was fully acquired and merged into Spanish brewer Mahou San Miguel in early 2023, he's taken on an even larger role working with the brewing team at Avery. In this episode, Kosmicki discusses the beers important to Founders, and how they make them. The conversation touches on: brewing concerns for packaged beers stored in a variety of conditions developing All Day IPA and building body and expression in a small hoppy beer implying body and sweetness with strategic use of adjuncts mash hopping for additional nuance dry hopping All Day IPA during active fermentation resisting, then developing a hazy iteration in the All Day family coming late to Citra hops balancing flavors in big barrel-aged beers using coffee in beer testing advanced hop products piloting again on a new 1bbl system And more. Golden's Cannonball Creek (http://www.cannonballcreekbrewing.com) has won a GABF medal every year since they opened in 2013, and they've done so across a wide range of styles—from German-style pils to Belgian-style blonde, stout, and cream ale. But the thing they're most passionate about, and have won the most medals for, is lower ABV hop-forward beers. Their American pale ale, Featherweight, and session IPA, Trump Hands, have together collected five GABF medals and three World Beer Cup medals (including four golds), but if you think Cannonball Creek is content to rest on their success, you'd be mistaken. Instead, Hutchinson and Lee employ a practice of constant improvement, and take it to quite the extreme. They're constantly tweaking recipes, no matter how many accolades a beer has earned, and that change isn't driven by a lack of performance in competition—winning beers are just as likely to see changes as any other. In this episode of the podcast, which coincides with the 40th anniversary of the Great American Beer Festival, Hutchinson and Lee discuss: finding balance in small hoppy beers staying intentionally small to brew beers they're passionate about modernizing malt bills over the past decade of brewing the gap between hop utilization calculations, lab tested IBUs, and perceived bitterness making winning beers without selecting hops evolving recipes as ingredients and contexts change mitigating hop creep with ALDC the traits of highly effective award-winning brewers And more. “We are constantly changing our beers, including those that have been successful in competition,” says Hutchinson. “We have beers that have won gold medals, that we have changed significantly, almost completely, and they've won again after that, too.” This episode is brought to you by: G&D Chillers (https://gdchillers.com): G&D Chillers' Engineers are committed to green technology design, while developing a more energy efficient chiller for the brewing industry. Outdoors Yellowstone National park https://www.nps.gov/yell/index.htmThe World's First National ParkOn March 1, 1872, Yellowstone became the first national park for all to enjoy the unique hydrothermal and geologic features. Within Yellowstone's 2.2 million acres, visitors have unparalleled opportunities to observe wildlife in an intact ecosystem, explore geothermal areas that contain about half the world's active geysers, and view geologic wonders like the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River. On March 1, 1872, President Ulysses S. Grant signed the Yellowstone National Park Protection Act into law. The world's first national park was born.Yellowstone National Park was America's first national park. To this day, Yellowstone remains one of the country's most popular national parks with millions of annual visitors. Yellowstone spans almost 3,500 miles, and extends into parts of Montana and Idaho, making it one of the largest national parks in the US.Yellowstone National Park sits on top of a dormant super volcano and is home to more geysers and hot springs than any other place on earth. Wonders abound at this truly unique national park, from sites like the Yellowstone Grand Canyon to wildlife like America's largest buffalo herd, grizzly bears, and wolves. Approximately 50 percent of the world's hydrothermal features are at Yellowstone National Park, creating an effect that makes the ground appear to be on fire. The most famous of all the geysers is Old Faithful, one of the most popular and recognized natural wonders in the United States.Entrance Fees:Yellowstone (non-commercial vehicle) - $35.00Good for entry into Yellowstone National Park for seven days from the date of purchase.Yellowstone (motorcycle or snowmobile) - $30.00Good for entry into Yellowstone National Park for seven days from the date of purchase. Snowmobile entry limited to guided tours or permit holders.Yellowstone (individual on foot, bicycle, etc.) - $20.00Good for entry into Yellowstone National Park for seven days from the date of purchase.I do also recommend people out there looking at exploring the park to please be advise as in the last week and few days the park has experienced dramatic floods do to rain and snow melting causing mudslides and also distructions of roads in certain areas of the park. Damage that has occurred is specifically to the north of the park and last time I checked the park was re-opened June 22 only on the southern loop entrance Beers Wynwood brewing cohttps://wynwoodbrewing.com/LA RUBIA 5.0 ABVAMERICAN BLONDE ALE Coming from a big Puerto Rican family, my dad and I live for family get-togethers and backyard barbecues. We wanted the perfect beer for those occasions so we crafted la rubia with only the finest ingredients. It's not a lager and it's not a pilsner. It's a blonde ale. This Hazy Session IPA talks a big game with the full hop aroma of mosaic and citra but deep inside it's a softy at only 4.8% Abv. Our take on a Session IPA has a juicy body and lower alcohol but Hoppy Chulo will smack hop haters upside the head with juicy dank tangerine, grapefruit, and papaya brought on by 3 different rounds of dry-hopping. With the light sessionable body and big hop flavor he's balanced… A little bit of a lover and a fighter.Pairing: indian curries, mild cheddar, minestrone, enchiladasAvailability: JulyFATHER FRANCISCO 9.3 ABVBELGIAN STYLE GOLDEN ALEFather Francisco is named after the first Jesuit priest that set up a mission at the Miami river in the early 1500s. This golden, light bodied brew has aromatic notes of cloves and other spices along with fruity esters. The candy sugar used in the beer lightens the body and increases the alcohol to create an easy going effervescent ale. One of the most iconic names associated with Ireland is that of “Guinness”. Christina, Katie, Lisa, and Thandi may not be drinking the Black Stuff in this episode, but they certainly delved into the historical archives of several breweries and their technological advances and scientific discoveries. There was a shift from local beer made in homes to the machine-driven mass production of beer (which could now be shipped), and this change had an impact on rural communities. From factories and using brine in cooling to the Student's t-test and developments in transportation routes, this episode is brimming with pub quiz-worthy knowledge.Beers in this episode:St. Mel's, Ireland - ‘Lúnasa' DIPA - https://www.stmelsbrewing.com/product/dubbel-irish/Eight Degrees, Ireland - ‘Sunburnt' Irish Red Ale - https://www.eightdegrees.ie/beers/sunburnt/Rascals, Ireland - ‘Hazy in Love' IPA - https://rascalsbrewing.com/shop/hazy-in-love-ipa/And ‘Happy Days' Session Pale Ale - https://rascalsbrewing.com/shop/happy-days-session-pale-ale/Hope, Ireland - ‘Hop-On' Session IPA - https://hopebeer.ie/portfolio-item/hop-on-session-ipa/ Follow the Beer Ladies here:YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWBi3lGBJmdNZtLk-mj4cXgInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/beerladiespod/Twitter - https://twitter.com/beerladiespodFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/beerladiespodcastPlease follow, like, share, rate, review, subscribe, tell a friend...you can also support us on BuyMeACoffee (Beer) - https://www.buymeacoffee.com/beerladiespodSupport the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/beerladiespod)

It's always a great time when we visit Brazos Valley Brewing in Brenham. This week Leo sat down with the two Joshes: Josh Bass (the Owner and Founder) and Josh Kahanek (the Sales Manager). Leo started off with Jam Session, a Session IPA with Mosaic and Comet hops. Brazos Valley's staff love great music, so they incorporate music lingo into some of their beer names - the rare beers are called B Sides. Some interesting beers were mentioned during our discussion about first beers, including Big Flats, a Walgreens exclusive back in the day, and the beer in a white can just labeled BEER in black lettering, which you can see at Houston's Beer Can House and at Fredonia Brewery's beer wall. Next, we discussed “the spectrum” of hazy beers while enjoying BVB's Hazy Does It. We also discussed hobbies, including disc golf and camping. And Josh K. gives the most unique answer to the question, what is your essential road trip thing? It was so much fun sitting down with Josh B. and Josh K. We love visiting Brazos Valley. They have a great outdoor area, and they often have food trucks, live music, and some killer soft pretzels. Their taproom is open Wednesday through Sunday. Check out their website to plan your trip. Thank you for having us, J.B. and J.K. Thank you for listening. Let us know what you think. We love receiving feedback. Cheers y'all!
